Monsoon chocolate is Tucson's only bean to bar shop. They make excellent award winning chocolate bars from single origin beans. They also have a wide selection of bon bons, four of which are vegan. I, myself, prefer the bars. The chocolate isn't exactly cheap, but it's on par with other bean to bar shops around the country. They also have a small cafe with various drinks and ice creams. I've tried the Mexican hot chocolate, which was good, but wayyyy to spicy for me. Will go for the house hot chocolate next time. They can make their hot chocolate with oat milk and you can leave out the homemade marshmallow to make it vegetarian /vegan. Hours are limited so check their social media for cafe/shop hours. I've been meaning to come here for awhile and see what it was all about. From the outside to the inside, the decor is top notch. It's a combination of artisan chocolate shop and coffee shop with an espresso bar. On my first visit, I ordered 4 chocolates and 2 hot chocolates. One was Sonoran (chiltepan) hot chocolate while other was the seasonal cardamon rose. Both were delicious and served in an earthen stoneware mug. The chocolates all looked amazing, they were the most decorative that I've ever seen. We ordered 4, they all happened to have caramel filling, and it was the smoothest caramel that I've ever had in a chocolate, I'm guessing this is what fresh caramel should taste like. You can order chocolates at the front counter and order coffee/hot chocolates at the side where the espresso bar is. Overall I liked everything about the shop except for the tip request when ordering chocolate only. It seems a bit crazy to ask for a tip on chocolates when they are already quite pricey. Tip denominations starts off at 18%. Tipping someone for making your coffee is one thing, but asking for 18-30% percent for ordering chocolates is another. read more

One of those special foodie stops when you visit Tuscon, make sure to save a whole lotta dollars and calories in reserve for a visit to Monsoon Chocolate. We bought a box as a gift, and at $50 for 15 gorgeous signature collection hand painted craft chocolates that is about $3.40 a chocolate. They can also be bought individually. We grabbed a few bars of chocolate and several bon bons to sample on the spot. They also have packages of dark chocolate covered mango, dark chocolate covered craft marshmallows, and other yummy looking creations in their display case. Our favorite items include the various jewel tone bon bons that taste as good or perhaps better than they look (which is often not the case for chocolates this beautiful.). The wall is covered with awards, so you can chose your award winning flavor, including pepper rose, prickly pear carmel, matcha sesame rice milk, and blueberry oat cardamon. The chocolates here are so flavorful and light. I'm glad I finally made it out here. The best chocolates that I've had since the ones I ate in Europe 2 years ago. My all time favorites here are the grapefruit fennel pollen and the EXO coffee. I wrote in another one of my reviews that I do not like fennel and will stay away from it at all costs. However, if the fennel is not in seed form, I'll try it at least once - I was more than happy I did. I love grapefruit flavors, scent, everything, and this dark chocolate bon bon delivered, as did the EXO coffee. The EXO was just a tiny bit acidic and had a tasty smokiness that was great. Some friends and I went on the chocolate tour here at their chocolate factory. They are in the process of adding a second location, so the place didn't look like it normally would. When we entered, we could smell the chocolate. The tour was very interesting and we learned about the entire process, from the farms in other countries, to sorting the various cocoa beans, to roasting them, making them into chocolates, and packaging them. Then we got to try a couple of samples of chocolate bars--one dark chocolate and one milk chocolate. World renowned chocolate is found in Tucson here! If you Google Monsoon Chocolate, you get to see all the awards they have won - for their bonbons especially but also their chocolate bars and others! It's pretty special to visit such a famous chocolate place. For chocolate bars, they have sooo many. I love white chocolate, and the blue corn atole white chocolate bar is so good. So is the mesquite white chocolate. The bonbons are of course gorgeous and beautiful to look at - not to mention that there are so many different flavors to try - get the Sonoran sea salt, prickly pear caramel - these are classics. Otherwise, just explore; the flavors aren't always super strong or obvious but they are so enjoyable to try! The workers behind the counter are all so knowledgeable and helpful for advice. We also love the peppermint bark for the holiday season (definitely less minty and more dark chocolatey) and the peppermint malt balls (think minty whoppers). I also got the Sonoran hot chocolate in house (there is a perfect amount of heat that chases that hot chocolate), which was delicious. There are so many other things I need to try! Lastly but definitely not least, it is also so wonderful that everything is thoughtfully fair trade. Although leaving Monsoon disappointed I think there is potential here. My absolute favorite chocolate shop in Phoenix does small batch/origin series/bonbons and while in Tucson for the weekend I was excited to see somewhere comparable! I assumed they would be close to the perfection of my other spot. The shop not only has the chocolates, but is also a cafe with avocado toast, salads, sandwiches, pastries, plus coffee and tea options. We came strictly for the chocolates though. I had heard they were having some issues with stocking bonbons as they have been quite in demand. When we arrived around 10:30am on Sunday they still had four flavors available - perfect for a four piece box. They also had several bars available. We had to stand around for a bit before we were acknowledged. I get being busy but even when we were helped it wasn't particularly friendly. I get it, we all have bad days, but I also am dropping at least $30-40 on chocolate so the fact that I feel like I can't ask questions regarding flavor profile isn't great. But, it is forgivable. We ended up leaving with a bar of the Ucayali Peru 75% dark, a bar of the mesquite white, and the pecan gianduja, mezcal caramel, blood orange dulce de leche, and prickly pear caramel bonbons. I was so excited to try them. With other bonbons I like to eat them in a couple of bites to really savor the flavors that can come out in good chocolate. The one downside to monsoons were the super liquid centers. While the flavors were pretty decent, the filling got messy quick and sometimes even overpowered the actual chocolate covering. The pecan was my favorite since the center wasn't too soft so the flavors could really blend together. They are definitely on the right path but may just need some additional tweaking. The bonbons are gorgeous though, great presentation and would be an amazing gift. The mesquite white chocolate bar is interesting. True white chocolate that almost has a toffee-esque taste as you let it melt in your mouth. Neither of us were fans but I think that is just personal preference. The Peru bar was super smooth for 75% and I quite liked it. I would definitely stick to the bars if I returned in the near future. Overall I think there are some great pieces to be tried from their chocolate collection, but some don't quite live up to what I expected at the price point. I would give them another shot if I was in town again to see how things are going. They absolutely have the potential to knock it out of the park in the future! read more

Since it was our first foray (we will be back), we tried the house hot chocolate, the Monsoon cookie, special strawberry cookie, and the wildflower honey cornmeal muffin with apricots. The house hot chocolate is amazing! - it's thick and tastes like you're drinking a dark chocolate bar. It's nothing like the grocery store boxed hot chocolate nonsense. The Monsoon cookie was lovely, with the distinct taste of brown butter mixing nicely with the dark chocolate and touch of salt. My partner enjoyed his cornmeal muffin enough to not share it, and our guest liked the strawberry cookie. Before we left, we purchased several bars of single origin chocolate to enjoy at home and are working our way through them now. Each has its own unique notes. Delicious. Why not 5 stars? This local chocolate shop is the perfect place to treat yourself to a little something sweet! I loved the Mexican hot chocolate. It's incredibly good: thick, spicy, and aromatic. I dropped in a couple of the house-made marshmallows, which held up well in the chocolate. Taking occasional bites of them in between sips of the chocolate creates a nice contrast that reasserts the delicious spicy-sweet of the drink. The serving is small, but the drink itself is so rich that a large portion would probably be too much. The chocolate and their food is equally beautiful and delicious. The Chocolate: They make everything in house. From the bonbons, which are seriously works of delectable art. You can also indulge in chocolatey drinks ranging from house hot chocolate, Mexican hot chocolate, frozen hot chocolate, and much more, like dessert which are still in the works. We samples the frozen hot chocolate and it's insanely good...topped with the tiniest touch of sea salt. The coffee: They are still working on sourcing an espresso machine, but the iced Japanese style coffee is really food. The Food: They serve breakfast all day! We enjoyed the smoked avocado toast, the Maftoul Salad (couscous with preserved lemon, fennel, sumac spiced garbanzos, yum!), and the Vietnamese Chicken Salad. We enjoyed the entire meal. The chicken salad was a little under seasoned, perhaps it needed more dressing, but everything was super fresh. Everyone is really nice and super welcoming- from Adam (head chocolatier/owner), to Nathan (culinary lead), Alana ( beverage and coffee extraordinaire ) and Jamie, Adam's lovely partner. We also purchased a box of chocolates to gift for Mother's Day and they kind enough to start the box for us and finish it as soon as they had more bonbons in stock. Monsoon Chocolate was good and has the potential to be amazing! They are just starting out, but there are clearly some kinks to be worked out. Let's start with the basics; whoever makes their pastries and chocolates is a genius. I don't give this compliment lightly, but their pastries and chocolates are straight up 5-star-would-impress-any-master-French-pastrychef/chocolate-next-level-deliciousness! I was actually incredibly excited when I discovered Monsoon Chocolate on Yelp, and had to put it on my Tucson list. As delicious as their avocado toast looked in the reviews, I wanted to try something else. The pastries looked delightful and the scone with the Mesquite White Chocolate caught my eye, because of the chocolate used in it. First, I want to say I'm not a scone person, I normally hate scones. This scone was life changing.. it was buttery, it was crispy, it was moist, it was lightly sweet, but not too sweet - it was just amazing. The caramelized underside was to die for (all scones going forward will have to benchmark against this). My husband tried the bacon and egg empanada, which I was able to have a little taste. It was nice but bland (the bacon was not noticeable), and I felt the decorative edge was a little too thick. I think they should serve it with something like an aji verde; please add that to your condiment options for this! My only complaint on the pastries in general, is that I would like to see smaller ones at a lower price point. I honestly wanted to try more things here, it's just everything was so darned big and filling! I love that they have chocolate samples and marshmallows out. I know the marshmallows are for the hot chocolate, but I had to snag one anyhow. I will say the marshmallows are delicious, but should be kept in an air tight container to stay more pillowy in texture. I love that their menu is simple to read, pastries are well organized, labeled and priced. Their chocolate however, isn't as straight forward. I asked the lady at the cash about the individual chocolate bon bons and how much each were and I was quoted $2.50 each. I agreed to purchase four; looking back at my receipt I was charged $13.00 (making them $3.25 each) not $10.00. The Mesquite White Chocolate bars are truly unique, but at $9.00 a bar, I'm not sure how many I would buy or how often to be honest (they seem more like a special occasion gift). I'd like to see a more bulk quantity Mesquite White Chocolate for a lower price point, so I could experiment with it in my cooking as well! Also, since the Mesquite White Chocolate is a packaged item, I think in addition to ingredients it should have a nutrition label. They do claim the sugar is equivalent to 70% dark chocolate... but how much is that exactly? I was also disappointed there were only two types of chocolate bon bons when I arrived (and I did arrive early in the day). Monsoon Chocolate needs to have more chocolate bon bons at all times, over half the display cases were empty (and bon bons do have a good shelf life). The chocolate bon bons available on my visit were the Whiskey del Bac, and the Chiltepin Dark Chocolate. I was really hoping to get the Prickly Pear or even the Pecan ones as they are closer to what I like. I did after all make a special trip to Monsoon Chocolate just for the bon bons! Now that I was overcharged/misquoted on the bon bons I feel really gipped! Needless to say I think they need prices on all their chocolate items to avoid this confusion! The bon bons are beautiful, but small, and after tasting them (and as one reviewer said, there isn't much alcohol in them), I can't justify buying them again for $3.25 each, even $2.50 is steep. I can however recommend the Mesquite White Chocolate, but not too often because the price is quite a splurge. The building itself and decor are perfect with a retro kind of feel. Since they have beautiful windows into some of the prep area I think they should really put the pastry/chocolate making process on display and take full advantage of it (like Soma Chocolatemaker (distillery district location) does in Toronto, Canada). While you're at it, add some ice cream and gelato in there, because this is a hot climate after all and there is no better way to enjoy chocolate. I think with time and refining, Monsoon Chocolate will be a 5 star stop. I can't wait to see how they grow over time. read more

For $5, I'm not sure that I will repeat the purchase, though. It comes in a metal cup with a copper straw, which is the bomb. I also had three bonbons ($2.50 ea.), which were all beautifully crafted, especially the mezcal. Almost too pretty to eat. The mezcal flavor was just right, the alcohol being not too overwhelming, which was nice. The caramel with blood orange was a nice flavor. The chiltepin was OK, but it was very waxy in texture, so I could not enjoy it. The shells of all the bonbons seemed to be just a hair or even a half a hair too thick compared to other bonbons or truffles that I've eaten. Overall, I think I would give the bonbons a 3 star rating. For $2.50 a pop, I would expect something more taste bud exploding, but it didn't happen. As of this writing, Monsoon Chocolate is three weeks old. I think they have a fascinating menu. They are perfect for a light breakfast or lunch. I think he needs to continue developing his chocolatier techniques. The interior is comfortable. The employees are very friendly and helpful. I hope that they are successful and continue to grace Tucson 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Tucson-top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. I love Monsoon Chocolate!! It's a unique experience to try beautifully handcrafted chocolates in a variety of flavors. Seriously, these bon bons are a work of art! We have tried a bunch.. prickly pear caramel, exo coffee, sweet basil, raspberry.. it seems their flavors rotate which is fun because it is always a sweet surprise with non-standard flavors.
