The hype over this place is understandable, the food network attention, the lines wrapped around the store, and the selection of donuts is fantastic. Bottom line is, the donuts aren't that great. They're not really fresh, they lack in flavor, and they're usually either too sweet or not enough. The staff was super helpful when I walked in but I did feel pressured to choose a few donuts cause the line was so long. I also got a coffee and while I love the idea of the coffee ice cubes, it really didn't taste good. I can't say anything about their sandwiches, I haven't tried them and they do look good but I can't bring myself to go back there when there's plenty of donut shops with better quality and cheaper prices. We stopped by here for donuts and coffee before going to the Montclair Farmers Market. The set up is really fun in a Saturday morning - kids, pups, running groups. The donuts are big! I got a chocolate frosted and it was alright. I liked that it wasn't too sweet. But, it did taste a bit stale to me. I'm not sure fresh they make and serve them. Next time I'll try a yeast donut to compare. They sell Paper Plane Co. coffee which was good. Based on our first experience we liked the outdoor setup and the vibe more than what we ate and drank. Forget the name, it's all about donuts here. Because of the time I came in, I think their most popular donuts had already sold out. Maybe if I came a little earlier, my review would be five stars instead of four. Don't get me wrong though, this isn't your average bakery. The doughnuts here are fresh, but sadly it leaves more to be desired. I tried their Nutella ($4) and cinnamon roll doughnuts ($3). Both are yeast style doughnuts and definitely more thick and substantial than your Krispy Kreme or dunkin donut. The Nutella one is like 1/4 cup of Nutella enveloped in a sugar glazed breading. This doughnut tastes good, but I feel like I could make this at home with some Nutella and bread. Cinnamon roll ones lack the gooey cream cheese icing (they use sugar glaze) and has too little of the moist cinnamon paste. The plus side is the pastries tasted fresh. Woah! These donuts are absolutely DELICIOUS! And trust me when I tell you, I've had my fair share in the donut department. These are def top 5. I've been wanting to try these for a while now, and finally decided to go for National Donut Day! ; ) Went in with the mentality of getting two donuts, but they looked so good that I ended up with four. I chose the tres leches, Nutella, maple bacon, and carrot cake donuts. While they're a bit pricey (3-4 dollars a pop) I'd say they're worth it! They also don't offer any type of discount for buying half a dozen or a dozen like most shops do.. that definitely would be a nice thing to do in the near future.. I'd def be there like every other day if that were the case. Anyway, all of the donuts were amazing! The Nutella one was filled so much!! They were not cheap with that filling at all and it was perfect!! They were all so soft and tasty and I promise that even after eating all four I still wanted more! I had been dying to try this place and finally got the chance. Ordered a variety of items to bring home. Got a brioche which was somewhat dry. Everything croissant which was fantastic wish I'd bought more. Chocolate croissant which my wife said was good. Hot cross buns excellent with a citrus flavor. The donuts are phenomenal! The register attendant was able to answer every question about any and all of the products. The music was ambient enough to give off the aura of a cozy-hometown bakery. I personally wish there were more decorations, as the inside seems more practical than aesthetic. I ended up taking home 6 donuts and one of their rosemary sourdough breads. The Tres Leches donut was by far the most prominent in terms of taste. It uses the same mixtures as the cake, with a sweet cherry and house made whipped cream. The donut was messy in the BEST way. Overall great experience, and my first review after going there about once a week for the past 2 months. Had to try the donuts here after reading all the reviews and finally got here to try some. Got the tres leches, caramel chocolate, fruity pebbles, glazed, and Nutella donuts. The best was the tres leches....was one of best donuts I have ever had. The others were good too and even though they are pricey they are worth it, you are going to pay for quality and when you do you don't mind. This review is only about the donuts but will definitely be back to try other things on the menu. Luckily when I went there wasn't a long line and the staff was polite and helpful. I came here on a Sunday morning to what I didn't realize it was no longer the Montclair bread Co. Terrible name on the rebrand by the way. we stood at the counter to order some breakfast treats. We were there at around 11:30 AM and they were out of apple cider donuts on the first weekend of fall, that was disappointing. We tried their apple crumb donut which was just OK. We also had their bacon egg soufflé sandwiches on a brioche bun. The brioche bun was good. It felt like a bagel croissant with an airy flaky inside and a toasty outside. The egg soufflé was OK, but was missing something that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe some black pepper or a caramelized onion. It was a decent sandwich but definitely not worth nine dollars as they priced it. The highlight was the drip coffee which is from paper plane coffee Co. my number one coffee spot in the area. We ate our breakfast outside on their patio area which could use a power washing as it was pretty dirty with leaves and dirt under all the tables. If you truly enjoy specialty donuts, it's worth a visit but that's about it. read more

Due to circumstances where I was up by 6:30 a.m., one of my first thoughts was, "hey I can get fresh donuts at MBC since I'm up early!" That is the draw of the donut. Since the last time I came, they have expanded and have a bigger area by the counter. Since I didn't plan on being up that early again, I took advantage, so thoughts on donuts I got: -blueberry cake: pretty good, tasted a bit like blueberry but I wish it tasted more like it -Fruity pebbles: was fine, but mostly just like a glazed donut with cereal on top -nutella: delicious! I love nutella so nice to get soft outside and a mouth full of it -smores: great, liked the crunchy graham cracker toppings with soft donut -just chocolate: just enough chocolate without being too rich, but the shavings on top were messy! Be careful and hold over a plate or else they get everwhere -watermelon: the winner! I wasn't even going to get it, but wow just like watermelon and even tasted really moist like it was full of water. Surprisingly amazing. Open early in the day everyday, there's a lot of "rising before the sun" happening here. Bread prices seem reasonable but the donut prices are out of site. I came by here early on a weekend to pick up some of the donuts both people I know and the yelp reviews raved about. Yes, original flavors. But soooooo sweet. IDK, I'm not the target audience I guess. But I find $2.50 a donut (ave price of 4 I bought) ridiculous. The loaf of bread I picked up was $6 - and worth it. I'd come back for the bread. But I'll be skipping the donuts. I can only give 2 stars as a result. I've had "as good or better" elsewhere for less. I have only tried the donuts here, but that is more than enough to have me keep coming back here! They always promote to come early to get these donuts, since on some days if it is particular busy, many of them will sell out. I was not a happy camper initially, but I was satisfied with the others I had. Some of the ones I have that I liked include Tres Leches , Fruity Pebbles, Creamsickle, Maple Bacon, Apple Cider, Glazed, Nutella. I would say the specialty ones I like the most are Tres Leches and Fruity Pebbles. However, having the specialty donuts is a bit much for me sometimes, since they are a good size. If I'm just going to eat one doughnut myself, I will be simple and have a Glazed or Apple Cider doughnut, both are no frills donuts and hit the spot! In addition, these are your cheapest option for donuts here at $2! The majority of the others go for $3 or $4, so be prepared to dig into that wallet if you are getting a bunch for yourself and friends. Having these doughnuts are well-worth it, and I would really recommend sharing and having pieces of the different varieties to see how you may like them. I cannot, for the life of me, understand how anyone likes these donuts. They are chewy and feel almost stale. They are expensive (and that would be ok for good donuts). We got 6 and it cost $27! And we ended throwing them all out. They all taste the same too sugary sweet. The rose champagne one has no flavor. Just tastes like sugar. The maple one is like the rose champagne but even sweeter. The cookies and cream is like the maple except with some chocolate crumbles. It was a huge disappointment. Especially after having to drive around 20 min just to find a parking spot. I wanted to write about my experience because I think it is important during this pandemic to show how customer service is being sacrificed. I ordered a birthday cake for my dog here because I have always been a fan of small businesses. I live far though- in Madison, about a 30 minute drive. I ordered the cake and an order of yum bread for pick up. Somehow their system split up the order and the yum bread was issued for a pick up on a different date. I have no idea how this happened as I only processed an order once. Fine. I also tipped them $20 on a $55 order even though this was a pick up order. I believe in generosity right now even though my husband is a cardiologist who is working in the ICU without compensation. When I went to pick up the cake, the yum breads were as stated before supposed to be picked up on another date because their system erroneously split it up. So they told me they donated it and couldn't issue a refund because they were at capacity. Honestly, this doesn't make sense. I know this is happening to a lot of people who are placing orders there but frankly, the business could call and give people a heads up when their orders aren't picked up. However in my case, this shouldn't have even happened in the first place. If the error was mine, I would have accepted it but it wasn't. I was just told repeatedly by the supervisor that they were at capacity and couldn't even provide me with the yum breads at a later date. The hospitals are at capacity. I don't understand how you can't bake me what I paid for and tipped you for at a later date. I am disappointed. The pandemic is NOT an excuse to take advantage of your loyal customers who are driving 30 minutes and tipping almost 40% on a pick up order. I will not be going back. My husband is working so hard to help people and this is what happens over bread. read more

The four selected were: Chocolate Glazed Fruit Pebbles Birthday Cake(Chocolate) Tres Leches Do yourself a favor and order none of those except Tres Leches. Every other donut had something to knock about it. The fruity pebbles were quite stale on top off the donut and I wasn't sure how long it was sitting out for. The Birthday cake wasn't terrible, but vanilla cake flavor would take it up a notch. They have a cool oven outside that they make bread in which is cool. Enough to make me not spend another dollar in this establishment!! I would love to post a snap shot of my current email interactions that display their unprofessionalism but I will not be so cruel, all I will say in regards to the email I received was, that it was very passive aggressive and immature!! Been here a few times and after trying several donuts I have come to a conclusion that they aren't very good. Most donuts look beautiful and there comes the disappointment when you sink your teeth into them. Most of the donuts that don't have fillings are dry. it's like eating a piece of bread with some chocolate on top. They are also quite pricey at an average around $4-$5. I really wanted to like them since they are so close by and look cool but I think the only good donut I've had was their jelly donut while all the rest are either dry or don't taste like their names.
