The driving range is so tight that crappy golfers like me are going to sooner or later smack someone......especially since they serve beer in to go cups (the only bright spot to this place). It's a very quaint place in a decent location in Oakland. I came here primarily due to the proximity to my home. I purchased a 5-pack range card for $50, which gives you a large bucket per use. That's not really much of a deal since most places are $10 per large bucket without a discount. The balls aren't in good shape, but I'm not extremely picky. The staff at the golf shop has been nice, albeit my interactions have been fairly limited. I haven't visited the bar, just the driving range. As for the range, if you're a serious golfer, I wouldn't recommend coming here. It's a decent enough space; it just lacks a lot of the amenities that you'd expect to get to really work on your game. There are no yardage markers by your tee. I can tell that the first two oil barrels (which are used as markers) are 100 and 125 yards, but further than that I can't tell what distance I'm hitting. The driving range is at a severe downslope, so your ball goes way further here than on a flat range. The range is also very short. I'm not exactly sure, but I think the back of the net is only 200 yards, which means I can hit my 3-wood and driver over the net into the woods. It's kind of a fun challenge and an ego boost, but it doesn't give me any information on distance. If you're a casual golfer, this place is totally fine. If you're a serious golfer, spend a little extra time driving to Chabot, Tilden, or Corica. read more

Owner (older asian man) was extremely rude and clearly does not understand customer service. Tee boxes are slanted mats that are not enjoyable to hit off of. The greens were totally unkempt. You'd think they'd have nicer greens at a pitch-and-putt. This place is not worth your time, and definitely not worth your money. read more

Shit service, rude management. Hours posted online are not accurate. hours posted in window aren't accurate. We showed up at 8 and ordered food with our server and mentioned that we planned to hit some balls afterwards. He happily took our order and didn't mention a thing. We went to the bar afterwards to get a pitcher and the bartender asked if we were planning to go to the range and hit and provided is with plastic cups. Went to get a bucket of balls and were told that the range stopped selling balls 45 minutes ago! Asked for a manager who was indignant that his size 10 font sign at the foot of the door was "clearly evident" and that he felt no responsibility or need to apologize for the miscommunication or bad service. He refused to offer us anything for our next visit (like that will ever happen now) in compensation for his staff's ineptitude. I wanted to like this place but with such inconsiderate management I won't be coming back. UPDATE: With five minutes left in the Warriors game we have a vacuum bumping our feet. I have never been more disappointed in service from a single institution in my life. DO NOT TRUST THE OPEN HOURS! Not only was staff inconsistent in their sharing of when we could buy golf balls--the bartender pouring us a pitcher and providing "cups for outside" while the attendant at the golf balls told us that they were closed because of "winter hours" (ON NOVEMBER 3RD IN CALIFORNIA ON A DAY WHERE THE HIGH WAS 73)--but the manager was rude when pointing out a "very evident sign" on the door (which was open with the back of the sign facing outward). Here I was thinking I'd found a driving range in the Bay Area with mediocre food, good beer, and good hours. I was wrong. Would have been one thing if management accepted their misstep and apologized, but to claim that this "evident" was an insult. Will be telling others to skip. read more

Greed has ruined the Montclair Golf Range. Used to come for years. With discount card, range balls were reasonable. Now the price is far higher than other ranges. Balls are torn up by the rocky landing area. Stalls are too close together. Owner knows zero about golf and charges premium price for clubs and grips. I might give Montclair two stars, except as I 'survived my first round of golf' - or half round of 9-short holes - I haven't experienced better. The good. There is a driving range. The holes are great for beginners like me - short! Apparently they are technically challenging with hills and are fairly narrow which requires accuracy. The redwoods are beautiful. The bad. The greens are in bad shape. On hole 9, there is a BIG hole in the ground which one of my golf-party-peeps rolled his ankle in and fell to the ground. Yep. On a golf course, and the management response was along the lines of "Oh. Okay." The neutral. The lodge inside looks like a blast back to when you might expect the upper crust of society to hang out in the 50's or maybe 60's. Didn't try the bar or food, and my next 9-hole probably won't be here, so it might be awhile. ************** Edit: 10/10/13 The owner send me a private message about the hole on Hole 9. I have enjoyed playing golf here, but I recently took a hike up sausal creek and realized how the golf course treats the creek. As soon as you get near the golf course, the water is full of suds, and there are no insects in the pond. There are thousands of golf balls in the water and surrounding valley. Literally thousands. I packed out 3 bags of them, and didn't make a dent. The worst part though was when the golf ball flew out of nowhere and nearly hit me and my dog. read more

I love this place. It's not high end, so don't expect Pebble Beach. I only come here during lunch to hit a bucket of balls with my coworkers. Grab a small bucket and hit through half of it, then go inside and order The Club and a beer. By the time you finish the bucket, your food and beer are waiting for you! In the Bay Area where you can go almost anywhere and get a fine cup of coffee with your breakfast, why would anyone go here? If you're inclined, belly up next to one of the salty regulars and order a burger as you watch some sports. Also a good place to work on the short game, there's a 9-hole pitch & putt course. This place is fun for hitting golf balls while drinking a pitcher but things may take a tumble if you want to hold an event here. I called in four separate times, explained what I needed on three of those calls and they promised to get back to me each time, I gave up after the fourth call. There was not even the courtesy of letting me know they weren't interested in hosting our group or offering alternative options to what I asked for. It was a group of 20-30 people interested in a fun evening of hitting golf balls and drinking beer, maybe with a coach or two on how to hit. This is a review for the bar/restaurant. This is a warning for anyone coming in as a group of 6 or more for drinks. 6 of us (all locals living about a mile away) wanted to get together for drinks to discuss travel plans. We tried to sit at the bar, but there were not enough seats for all of us, so we sat at a table and ordered a bottle of wine and a couple of beers. When we were getting close to finishing up, one couple in our group decided to order food "to go" from the bar, and specifically asked to keep it off our bar bill. When the bill came, not only did they put the food on our bar bill, but they added a 18 percent tip automatically. When we questioned it, they said, with groups of 6 or more, they automatically add tip and said it was printed on their menu...but we never saw a menu because we just ordered drinks. They also tipped on top of the "to go" food that our friends picked up at the bar. Bottom line is, sit or stand at the bar if you are just having drinks as a group. We will never be back...better spots that wouldn't do this to you in Montclair would be Crogans or Camber! read more

I love this place! They have a nine hole pitch and putt course which is fun to play on. I have noticed some areas of the course lacking grass, but this could be the drought or needing to save water. Their golf range has two layers, and has metal cans you can hit. Some people have complained about the metal cans, but i love them. You know when you hit the targets! They have a paring lot that can handle lots of cars as well. I love this place because i don't feel that i need to be a pro to golf here. read more

I dig little divey places like this. It's a unique bar / driving range buried in one of those Oakland Hills canyons, hard to find, but open late. I had a beer and a bucket of balls here at about 9:30 pm on a recent Friday night. Don't bother with the practice green, it is comedically bumpy... they might as well just let it go back to nature. But the beer / bucket combination is pretty hard to beat -- the perfect way to kill an hour if you're in the neighborhood. read more

This is my favorite little golf course on this earth. I've come here all my life. It is family owned. The staff couldn't be more loving and warming like your own family. They treat you with respect and they give you great service and delicious food. I absolutely love their burgers. They have a huge bar selection. The place is always shining and clean. I absolutely love James the manager. His dad is a wonderful owner. Sometimes when it is super busy, it is hard to get a seat because everybody wants to be here. Basically a dog track. I took a club in to get reshafted. The guy at the counter flat out said "It's not worth it" and got back to his conversation with his buddy. No customer service whatsoever but it's run by the city of Oakland so I guess I shouldn't have expected much; although a little courtesy would have been nice. We got a large bucket of balls and hit the driving range for only 10 bucks. We decided to play the 9 hole course for $7/person. It was $7 too many. The course was mad ghetto. Puddles on the green, random ditches, unkept grass, etc, etc. In all honesty I am a beginner so it didn't make a difference anways. Atleast when it took me gazaillion strokes to hit the ball in I can blame it on poor drainage and the fact my shoes and socks were soaked with water. Haha. Love the driving range (double-decker), like the restaurant well enough (the club sandwich, anyway), but the little course is just tragic. Err, maybe it's my short game that's tragic. Either way, the "fairways" (used loosely of course) are really narrow and worked into a hillside. Translation: a lot of lost balls. Granted, this all means that you can score a bunch of other people's lost balls that they didn't bother to fetch. My hubs and I had more fun digging around the surrounding woods looking for balls than we did playing the course. Check out the 9-hole course at Chabot instead -- far superior in every respect. read more

I love this place. I am a golf newbie so I may not be entitled to certain opinions, but I do have plenty of good things to say about this place. First off, it is really easy to feel like a regular here. The employees are always friendly and start to recognize you after a few visits. This place has been crucial in my pursuit to better my game. I did not pursue golf as a youth, and am now trying to pick up some skills in my 20's. This place has been great. I find myself here a couple times a week just practicing my game. This place was actually my first golf experience as a child (which obviously I did not seriously pursue until my 20's). When I was young, I played a little golf here with an after school program. Now that I am an adult, I am pleased to see that they still welcome youth golfers. Honestly, I can't think of a better place for a child to learn and practice the game of golf before moving on to full courses. Props to Montclair Golf Club! They may not be a luxury club, but they are truly a great starting point. I agree with some other reviewers that their driving range balls are too old and stalls a little too narrow, but from what I have gotten out of this place, it is worth it. This place also has a lot of charm. I know some reviewers don't like the atmosphere here, but to me it feels like Cheers! read more

Sssswaack! Great range to hit a large bucket of balls. Nothing like hitting golf balls one after the other hoping to hit the net on the far end of the valley. It helps that it's downhill. There is also a short chip&putt course that is fun to play with newbie golfers. They also have a frequent buyer card that makes it a wee bit cheaper if you are visiting the range often to work on your swing. Practice makes perfect. read more

Went in today to get a quick small bucket in before the sunset. When I went to pay I pulled out my debit card and was told it was cash only and that it was $8 (which is a ridiculous price for a trash bucket of 30 balls). So I pulled $8 out of my wallet and the owner then said, "Why didn't you pay with cash in the first place?" (Clearly I didn't want to if it wasn't my first inclination to do so...). This annoyed me but I paid and hit the balls. When i was leaving (walking through the shop) there was a customer paying for a bucket of balls with a card no questions asked....!?!? Won't ever come back here again! They are liars and charge ridiculous prices for subpar balls, subpar mats mats to hit off of (no turf and ripped), and a horrendous range! read more

Stopped by during lunch the other day and had an ok experience hitting some balls...the stalls on the bottom deck are a joke...anyone with a long reach will spend their time hitting the support beams on either the backswing OR follow through....top deck was ok, but the steep decline and narrow range make it really tough to get an accurate reading on distance. I went out to this course for the first time today. I only used the driving range so I can't speak to the rest of the course. I did enjoy myself. It's easy to get to. It's in a beautiful setting. And, it's not crowded. It's great to be able to get away for an hour and access the driving range and just hit balls. read more
