I prefer the grass range at Metropolitan, but in a pinch this place is okay when I don't want to drive out to San Leandro. They have a double-decker range with nets. Very low budget but it's fine. My one real gripe is that the some of the range balls feel dead and need to be retired. Not sure how good it is for your clubs to be hitting them. They also have a small chip n putt range which is again, nothing fancy. Their club house and shop, on the other hand, is surprisingly nice. read more

Take the place for what it's worth. It is a real golf course? Hell no. It's a pitch-and-putt with 60 yard holes and crappy greens, but you pay $6 and practice your chipping with no one bothering you. The range is fine, stalls still too close together and you occasionally hear people smashing drivers against side of stalls. Club prices: The Best. It's a family run place, the Lee family. I have bought all my woods/hybrids here and they consistently beat Golf Smith and most other places on price. Good service--they regrip stuff pretty fast. The Lees are cool--pops is a crusty old school Korean guy but the sons get customer service. The bar? Fantastic, especially when John bartends on Wednesday and Friday nights. Good pours and a funny guy. Montclair golf is an acquired taste. It is a local watering hole with very good customer service and club selection. read more

I realize I should update my review, seeing as I've been coming to this place the last 5 years to hit range balls! Giving it 5 stars because: 1. its driving range is legit, and range prices are reasonable 2. There is good beer on tap, and you can even bring it out to drink while you hit 3. Their customer service is excellent and they are always so friendly 4. They support the First Tee and host kids for The First Tee of East Bay sessions! Hidden off a road in Oakland lies a little scruffy range and short 9 holer. From afar the little clubhouse reminds me of the pro shop at Claremont Country Club although the clientele and environment are a wee bit different. It's definitely no frills and muni conditions both on the range and their tiny practice putting green. You can even purchase range balls of varying quality for different prices. A first that I have seen. They even have a some hard goods with a couple cool items if you like putters with the similar pricing at the big box stores. I've read different things about the staff at the counter. Initially I found the gentleman to be a tiny abrasive but after speaking to him after a few minutes it's a cultural difference. The older gent behind the counter is actually a sweet old guy that loves the game. At one point he was a stick but father time and health have caused index to balloon upwards. But he still loves the game was a super guy to talk to and was really nice. For what it is, and it isn't the Cal Club or Sequoyah CC, it's a cool little hangout. read more

Been going here since I was a kid. Used to have pee wee golf course for kids and late night teenage excursions. But today it's an excellent, local driving range and 9-hole course for family and friends to amuse themselves no end. The Montclair driving range is simply the worst, tackiest, driving range in America. The balls are crap, scarred, old and often dirty. The stalls are too small, causing golfer's clubs to hit the wooden supports. I once ruined a $400 driver there. And the staff is surly and unhelpful. Today, I asked for a small bucket and the attendant said he didn't have one. Obviously, filling a small bucket was too much to ask and expecting him to fill a small bucket with one of his medium buckets was too complicated an idea for him. Oh yes, there is not a shred of grass on the range, so if you like dirt and mud, this is the place for you. Oh, did I mention that they don't even give you a tee for the balls? I like this low key driving range and nine holer. My BF and I like to hit balls while drinking a beer. You can order from the bar and take it to the range. They have a two deck driving range, which makes it even more fun! The conditions include some dirt but oh well it's pretty cheap and tucked away in a neat little spot amongst the trees. read more

This is a great spot to have in the neighborhood. Im not serious golfer, and I am tottally comfortable here. I love the 9 hole course. Just perfect for a quick game, or take your time, there is never anyone pushing you here. And the driving range is open late! I love this place! It's seriously our second home. Everyone is so nice and the breakfast is delicious! It's our go to breakfast spot in the area, I like eating here more than any where else in the Montclair area. I've also had lunch here and it's also yummy. The grilled cheese sandwich is to die for and you must get the curly fries! The range is nice and it's always relaxing to go out there and hit some balls and have a few drinks. I'll qualify this rating. I don't really play here all that often, only when I hit some balls and feel like getting in a quick 9 holes. This rating is more for the driving range, which is top notch. $11 for around 120 balls or so is a good deal. They're open until 10 most days and the place is nice, clean and easy to get to if you live in the Oakland/Berkeley/El Cerrito area. While the range at Tilden is just as good, I just like the vibe of this one better. I don't run into any golf snobs and the pro shop is well stocked, can do all repairs/refinishes on any club you bring them and they are cool people. I believe this place is family operated so you don't really have to deal with an annoying 19 year old who only wants to work there to get a discount on green fees, which is the major downside of Tilden. The course is a 9 hole, chip/putt that is good for a beignner and ok to work on your short game if you're a more experienced player. The pace doesn't get as slow as Tilden or some of the SF courses do on nice weekend days, but I would still reccomend getting there early and playing 2 rounds if you really want to get some practice in. Green fees are less then $10, so you can get in, hit a large bucket, play 9 and get out in less then 2 hours with a snack for less then $30. Like most 9 hole courses now days, golf etiquette tends to be ignored, but in my limited experience on this course, slow play seems to be the only real issue and if you come early, get in a quick 9 then grab a drink and hang out, use the time to catch up on returning phone calls, it's a relaxing afternoon, with 18 holes. The course is maintained ok and is (in my opinion) better after a rain then Tilden, so if you want to play off season too, it's good. I only knock them down 1 star for the occasionally slow play and bad etiquette of new golfers, but I can't be too upset, I was a beginner too! I actually applaud beginners who go to 9 hole courses rather then to a full 18 course and clog it up, hit into you etc. etc. read more

Can't understand why the buckets of balls are so expensive. The Montclair Golf course charges 38% more for a small bucket of balls compared to Lake Chabot and Lake Chabot's facilities are way nicer, cleaner and way better maintained. It doesn't make sense to the public and clearly makes dollars for those who run the Montclair Golf Course. To add insult to injury they now offer premium driving range balls (balls that are not so torn up and old) but at an extra cost. How lame and greedy is that? read more

Driving range is open. It is two tiers. I would recommend playing on the top tier where there is more freedom to swing. Even in the sun there is a nice breeze. The bar is open window service only. Nice place to get your swings in and have a beverage too. read more

NO RUBBER TEES ON THE MATS. I've come here for years but after today's visit, no more. I bought a small bucket and large bucket of balls for $20. It seemed expensive, but I don't do it often. When I went out to the mats, there are NO rubber tees. It turns out you have to BUY the tees. I've never heard of that, especially for such an expensive ball rental fee. They're cheap enough to be included in the ball rental fee. This is a stupid business model. I had to buy one because the mats are USELESS without a tee. Never again. I will tell my pals. read more

If I could leave a negative star review I would! First of all let me say that I am a huge fan of this establishment, which might sound weird given the 1 star review, but let me explain. I frequent this place and spend a lot of money there, between range balls, drinks and tips for the bartenders. I felt as though I had a good rapport with most bartenders but, tonight I was proved wrong. There is a female bartender there who also works at a nearby bar in Montclair village who has a perceived issue with me. She was there this evening and convinced the entire staff, including the owners son, that I didn't belong. I am a white male and I whole- heartdly believe that this is the reason that I was singled out as a villain tonight. I was just sitting at the bar drinking when I was told to leave. Then, when I asked why, I was met with a mob who forced me to leave and followed me out into the parking lot and threatened me with violence. This mob included the owners son James. I calmly asked why I was being asked to leave and received no answer other that what James told me: "I trust my bartenders." I am confused, angry, and embarrassed by the whole incident. I always thought that this establishment was accepting of all people but, I guess if you are a white male then you are a target for unwarranted hate. read more

You DO NOT go here for the food! This is an INTENSELY local joint and if you are a LOCAL, you will not know what I am talking about. John, the bartendar on Fridays, gives gooood pours and is friendly. The owners of the golf course and restaurant are good people (I have hear that they invite their "regular" patrons, who do not have family, to their Thanksgiving dinner). How can I describe this place? The tables and chairs are sticky and either covered with a thin layer of grease, or feel like it because the lacquer on them is decaying. We went there a month after Christmas, and they still had a cheesy Santa at the door to greet you who would sing carols when you pressed a button. The waitress was jaded and seemed like she had kept the job a good 30 years beyond her original plan. It's a sports bar, and the walls had various (some very old and interesting) pictures of sports related topics, along with more Budweiser ads than you might expect. Really, the place is fascinating, from a sociological perspective and I would recommend it if only to see a great example of .... well ... something from the past that involves blue haired ladies. When I, my wife, and our 11 year old son went there to discover what this restaurant in our neighborhood had to offer, we immediately felt like outsiders. Not that we're all that young. We're not. But it seemed that we were invading the turf of some other generation. The food. You want to know about the food? I can't remember exactly what I ate, but it was something appropriate for that kind of diner, like Salisbury steak or meatloaf. It was a great theory, but I was severely punished for it. I would have been better off with the unimaginative feedlot hamburger that my son had. So why not one star? Is it that I don't have the heart? I say it's one of the cheapest yet most addicting stress relievers. I prefer to come here during lunch time as well as the evening. Nothing better than being with a couple of good friends and kicking back ice cold beer and swinging for the moon...better yet Highway 13. Word of advice. I gave up golf on a beautiful afternoon in Golden Gate Park in 1998. I blamed golf for my ruined afternoon, and said never again. I think I donated my clubs. I picked up golf again in 2012 when my friend dragged me to this driving range. I had a spectacular time hitting a large bucket of balls into the sun down a pretty canyon. We then retired to the restaurant for a bloody mary, beer, and fish n chips. The pro shop advised me on new equipment, helping me choose the right set of used clubs after I accidentally paid to much for some junk clubs on craigslist. I think this place is a real gem. This place has been a refreshing outlet from Covid 19. Cant thank them enough for it. Im not a golfer by any standards but enjoying hitting some balls on the range. And having a tasty adult beverage. I lived in Oakland since 2004 and i thought this was a private golf club for some unknown reason. As an added bonus, there's a couple of trailheads nearby that could either bring you into the depths of Joaquin Miller Park or to Sasual Creek in Dimond Park. I'm a huge fan of this place. As someone who's taken up golf over the past year, the guys in the pro shop have helped me immensely. They're incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and will spend an endless amount of time with you explaining any aspect of the game or equipment you're interested in. The range itself is built into a canyon and does its job. The par-3 course is what it is, a little pitch and put. One more thing - they DO carry Taylormade - perhaps this is a recent development, but I've hit a number of their Taylormade demo clubs over the past month. Buy a range card - you can get 5 large buckets (over 120 balls) for $40. Doesn't get much cheaper. read more

A charmingly Oakland driving range I was stuck on the left side of the bottom level of the driving range. I couldn't see most of the targets, because there was an inconveniently placed hill directly in front of me. I could see some of the targets, though. Like the rusted barrel next to a wooden post that had "80" written on it. Or what seemed like hunks of sheet metal painted various colors that were intended for shorter shots. The only thing that actually does kind of get in the way of a good driving range experience is that you don't have much space. I came close to hitting the wall with my driver many times. Also, because of the hill I mentioned, I often had to slant my shots to the right, and that resulted in me several times smashing the ball into the wooden wall separating me from my golfing neighbor. It was pretty embarrassing, and made me look like a bad golfer, which I am. All in all, it's just a driving range. Who cares what you're hitting the balls at? And the cramped quarters gives you a little more incentive to think about your swing and positioning. Also, it's easy to get to, and open til 10 PM, so I'll be sure to come back. I'm also looking to try the actual course. read more

This place is a dump!!! They have two different prices for range balls super crappy at 8 bucks a medium bucket or ten for just crappy range balls, WTF is that? Everything in the pro shop is 25% more then anywhere else. Their inventory in a mess nothings seems to make sense there. The Range is a glorified cow field. IF you hit ball in the late afternoon you are staring directly into the sun so maybe..... you can se the dust kick up when your shot hits the ground...maybe. I had to leave a quarter of my bucket because it was just so shitty. Now if you want to be around obnoxious golfers who drink cheap liquor, and lie about their scores, swear on their lives that Tin Cup in a documenty and they could make the cut at the open then this is the place for you. Cool, older double deck range. They also have a course but I've never played. Nothing over a par 3 I believe. Also have a shipping and putting green. Very simple spot. Im a newbie at this golf stuff, but have been here 3 times now and have yet to dare try the course. The staff are friendly and one time the dude didnt even charge me for a rental club....yippee, i saved myself 1 dollar. Its cheap, a big bucket is 9 bucks at the driving range. Nice scenery. Friendly golfers. Weird people at the bar as others have mentioned and they should finally finish the remodel, especially the parking lot. The restaurant: the service is fine. Well, maybe it is for me because I only go with my sister-in-law, who's a regular. The food is terrible. There's nothing on the menu worth eating. There's no fruit. The salads are wilted. The restaurant doesn't dry the leaves; so the dressing doesn't stick. If you order a hamburger or sausage, the kitchen squeezes it until all of the juices have run out. The corned beef and pastrami are dry. The chicken fried steak has an unpleasant aftertaste. read more
