I come here to hit a bucket every so often, but the real draw is the restaurant/bar. Unpretentious people and food make it a good place to unwind with a beer, watch a game or pop out for a round on the executive course, but the best thing in my experience is the ease of getting a table. I've come here in the early afternoon with a group of 8 people and it's never as problem. The old couples who cruise in for a meal make it feel as if a bingo game will break out at any moment, but they're adorable. Came here with my fiancé to hit some balls. This place is no frills. A down-home local joint that I'd frequent if I were in high school. But I'm 31 and had a great experience hitting balls, drinking beer, and ending the night with a very buttery patty melt. Oh and there are cats roaming around the place - which I didn't mind. This review is for the driving range only. For me, this place makes a lot of sense, and would makes a lot of sense for people living in the area. Sure, there are nicer golf courses out there, but it's got everything you need for a driving range. It's got two levels, a bar, and a laid-back atmosphere. $4.50 will get you a fat pint and you can get that beer for the bar or to go from the pick-up window. read more

First time golfing for the kids and I! We all had a blast! We rented some clubs and balls and had a blast seeing who could hit the farthest. They had a little snack bar/restaurant that came in handy after a few hours. What a workout! Staff was friendly, plentiful parking and the prices were a lot lower than we had expected. This place is what it is. The fact that I have a driving range 3 minutes from my house is awesome. The P&P, as others have mentioned, is in dire need of help. They need to buy a green mower. To their credit, they've been whittling away at fixing this place up...and it's coming along (new parking lot, new putting green, new paint on the main building), but they still need to redo the bar/restaurant - I assume they're going to do this last as it's probably the biggest money maker in the joint. Whenever I come down the driveway, my "king for a day" imagination kicks in. Given how many families live in the area, this place could be a mecca for family fun. Some very obvious ideas: - Why not rebuild the putt-putt course? - Why not offer more lessons? - Why not improve the P&P? - Why not renovate the driving range stalls? - Why not renovate the restaurant? - Why not put some decent landscaping/greens/pins into the driving range? I realize that all of that costs money, but I honestly believe this place could be a HUGE draw if they were to throw a little more cash at it and make it more inviting. I'll still come here to hit balls regularly, but as a father-to-be, it would be great if it had more than just a driving range and dive bar. read more

Horrible! Golf is not teeing off from astroturf, walking 40 feet through an ungroomed field, chipping the ball onto a green that would barely pass for a fairway, then putting into broken cups. Oh, and one must mention that two holes were CLOSED! Seriously! Then, the guy working had to "talk to me" about my rate of play. Wow. The driving range is the only redeeming part of the Montclair Golf "Course." While it isn't the best driving range around, it is perfectly serviceable and a good value. read more

Montclair Golf Enterprises - wow that is a fancy name for this place! I will admit that i never suspected I was in an enterprise when I was here. What is this place, if not an enterprise, you ask: dive bar with plasmas, pool table, driving range, strong drinks, friendly people, above average food...so on many summer afternoons: nirvana! I've been coming to this place for nearly a decade and really just realized recently how versatile this place was from drinking & driving (balls) to watching sports drunk eating wings and potato skins to dinner with my 3 & 5 year old and their friends. I only go here for the driving range, and in terms of that this place is really nice. Its a double decker which means there is a top and bottom level to get some practice in. I go there quite frequently, so I wish there was some sort of membership/deal/punch card that allowed you to get exclusive benefits that would allow you get extra balls, discounts, drinks, etc. read more

What a waste! The City of Oakland sure has missed the boat on this place- it's so convenient to nearly all the East Bay it could and should be a great revenue generator for a city that needs it! One (and only) visit proved that not all of the East Bay is known for health conscience people as cigarette smoke filled the place and drunks stumbled to their cars to (safely I hope) make it home. The food was mediocre and cold, and served by an older woman who still had smoke coming out of her mouth when taking our order. My wife almost left with the kids at this point. But we stayed around long enough to observe a very poorly maintained golf course that had a dangerous wash out area (maybe the city's fault) and a dangerous driving range. Kids can easily fall off the top level not to mention get wacked from a drunk long drive champ downstairs. Maybe the next mayor of Oakland will care more about it's parks and revenue streams. Monclair Golf Course has the ability to provide both given the chance!!! I suggest Tilden Park or Alameda's Chuck Corsia (sp?) over this dump 8 days a week... read more

WOW.... what type of course does not have junior rates. if i drive to alameda i get 1/2 the original price ($5 for a large bucket) but because i live in the Montclair area, Montclair golf course is more convenient. Montclair cost $10 for a large bucket, which is significantly smaller than the large bucket at alameda AND THEY DON'T PROVIDE A JUNIOR DISCOUNT.. Absurd. Extra $5 a bucket adds up... and when you're a high school student, money doesn't come easy. I understand it's a private course but COME ON. And there is more!! I confronted the owners son, Mr. _______, and asked him if there are any junior rates, he responded by saying "What for." I couldn't believe how FUCK UP that was.. I explained the discounts provided at the surrounding courses and he walks off saying "then I guess the courses are the way to go." FOODS not bad though.... BUT the French fries are frozen... not very appealing I think that the owners are a little ravenous FOR MONEY read more

I have been coming to the Montclair Golf Restaurant for a good many years now, and the food has been consistently great. For the amount and quality of the dishes, the prices are very reasonable. The last time I ate there, I started with the firecracker shrimp with chipotle aioli, and it was fresh and flavorful. I then had the ribeye steak, which was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. The servers are very friendly and kind, and are attentive without being overbearing or pretentious. The bar is warm and inviting, and a big plus is the ability to take your drink outside to the driving range or one of the outdoor tables. The people are friendly, and I consider this place a hidden gem that more people should see for themselves if they want to have a good meal and hit a few golf balls with some beer when they get thirsty from the exercise. Have not been to this place since my dad took me here almost 18 years ago. Was excited to take my wife who has been golfing now for 2 months to experience something other then a driving range. Friendly guy at the register, we payed for 2 people on the nine hole par 3 ($7) per person. Before we teed off we went to the small putting area. There was thick grass around it so told my wife to practice some chipping. Some old Chinese man came up to us waving his arms screaming "No chipping" "no allowed " I said ok sorry didn't know. Thought that was the end of that until he said "you not allowed. Sign say no chipping" I looked around and told.the man there is no sign to which he told me they steal my sign. No CHIPPING!" His tone of voice and attitude were way out of line, all I need it to be told once. My wife after that was nervous the entire 9 holes which by the way are in the worst condition ever. Tee boxes are rock and dirrt. It will ruin ur clubs! We were set to have a good time but after being yelled at several times by the old man it just defalated our experience. Won't be back. read more

A group of friends goes to the coffee shop about twice a month for a relaxed, casual get-together and breakfast. This morning was not that. When a couple of us complained to the waiter (a very nice guy) about the dreadful excuse for coffee, the manager came out of the kitchen and told me that if I didn't like the coffee I could drink water! He was not at all interested in bettering our experience, or concerned about our complaint, but instead was extremely rude and made us all feel very un-welcome. We will not return. And, by the way, were not loud and rowdy. We're a relatively quiet group of older women. read more

i love this place. i took lesson there and go to hit some balls. i have yet to play, but definitely will soon. i'm a beginner, so it's perfect for me, a newbie and as a newbie, i prefer the background chatter. the quiet silent at the snobbier places make me nervous. maybe i'll outgrow it when i get better, but i don't think that'll happen anytime soon since i work for a living and don't have 4-5 hours a day/3 times a week to practice. oh, and i love the bar.....great strong drinks!!!! read more

This review is for the par 3 course only. I came here to work on my short game and was really disappointed in the course. The downside: mats for tee boxes, narrow fairways (any shot other than straight will put you onto another hole or worse yet roll down/up the hill into the bushes), greens are pitched so that balls will roll off the greens, down the hill and into the bushes, anything short of the green puts you in bare dirt, patches of grass (forget trying to chip up to the green). Very frustrating to say the least. I can see beginner golfers being very frustrated as it is so easy for them to hit their balls down/up into the hill and into the bushes. If you are able to hit your shots straight and land precisely on the green without much roll then this place is for you! Oh, and it's an 8 hole course, the 2nd tee is closed. read more

The driving range is bare-bones but perfect for someone new to golf like me! Simple and only $1 to rent a 5 iron. Also, the bar was classic - made me and my boyfriend wanna watch Caddyshack!! While the golf course itself is not in great shape, the driving range makes up for it. The staff is friendly and the double-decker range is such a great thing to have in the neighborhood. The bar has great beers on tap and some of the wait staff (Mong in particular) are fantastic. They are fast, friendly and welcoming. While I admittedly prefer dives to pretentious places, I would not call this a dive. It is just a great place to hang out, whether hitting balls, having a few beers, or both (at the same time!). read more

The hamburgers are great. The Cobb salad is one of my favorites. There is a revolving menu of specials as well. I live in the area and find the service to be good, the food tasty, prices reasonable, and if there is a hockey game or baseball game going on, I can watch while I eat. Don't waste your time here. The facilities are terrible. Small stalls (you see gouges on the wooden pillars from people hitting them with their clubs on the follow through). Range balls are in terrible shape. Not real range balls. Looks like balls that have been laying at the bottom of a water hazard for decades. Mats are crappy too. No putting green either. The customer service is about on par (no pun intended) with the facilities. If you are really interested in working on your game, head to Tilden (Berkeley), Chuck Corica (Alameda), Metro (Oakland), or Monarch Bay (San Leandro). read more

For starters, the fact that because i wrote them a poor review they removed it is quite bad. They sold alcohol to a minor. The manager caused a scene with a customer for false allegations then proceeded to be very rude towards that group of people who were not doing anything wrong. Alright so this is not a serious golfers hangout-good, serious golfers scare me anyway. Yeah the bar has a skeazy hole in the wall vibe, but it is truly refreshing for a place to be associated with golf and not with snobbery. The pro shop is surprisingly well stocked and staffed and hitting balls off the top deck is most enjoyable. Something whacky seems to happen every time I go here. One time there was a huge Red-tailed hawk stuck in the netting. They stopped us all, went out and freed it. Another time there were these korean tourists dancing to a miniature boombox, another time a girl swung so hard she came out of her scant top. A good time as unpretentious as can be. read more

The people who give this place only a couple stars and complain about the greens and bar crowd, are just a bunch of turkey's. No turkeys a loud! This place is such a cool little laid back local spot with a local crowd and a couple good tv's for a game. Average bar food, and if you're expecting wood tavern or Gary Danko, don't be surprised that you're probably a knucklehead. The young crowd can hit some balls and get after a few brews, while the old timers can remember learning to play this course as children without much change to the venue. I've been coming here as often as I could this year, and love how laid back and easy it is. It's easy to get to, it's easy to park, it's easy to get a range card and buckets of balls, it's easy to have a beer or glass of wine while taking a break between swings. There's also a full bar and restaurant so you could pretty much hang out all day if you wanted. The range and course are set in a pretty wooded location just off highway 13 and I appreciate the compact layout. If you want big and fancy this wouldn't be it, but if you want a relaxed place to hit some balls and/or chill with a drink it's hard to beat. The shop has a good selection of equipment and they let me play around with their clubs when I was still shopping for a set. Cliff has always taken care of me there, and I'll keep going back as often as I can. read more
