Short version: Had a mostly good, but mixed, experience the first two visits. But the last one was so uncomfortable and borderline hostile out of nowhere. Will not return. Long version: The first time I needed to adjust the lie angle on my irons a few degrees. He was very friendly and professional at the time. He insisted on doing a lie angle board and I went along with it even though I knew what adjustment I needed. In retrospect I should have been more insistent, so I'll take responsibility for that, but he likes to stick to his process. The adjustment was much stronger than I planned on getting. After using my clubs for a few weeks, it felt off, so I ended up going back to him to get the adjustment I originally wanted. He was cool about it and made the adjustment. He charged less this time around - he actually hesitated charging at all. After building a rapport I planned on being a repeat customer. So several weeks later, I reached out to him about adjusting the loft on a single iron. I told him it wasn't urgent. We arrange a time to meet - all seemed ok. When I get there he starts doing the adjustment and the tone shifts. He starts telling me about how I'm wasting his time with this loft change and how other customers asking for small adjustments are wasting his time. He's dropping F bombs and coming across really hostile. Keep in mind, this is a paid service and didn't ask for this as a favor. 5 minute non-urgent job for $10. I was completely taken off guard. I found myself in a position verbally defending this adjustment that *I was paying for*. I couldn't believe this guy was mad about getting work requests directly related to his club repair business. He also could have turned down the job before we both went through the trouble of meeting. I was very explicit on what the adjustment request was. Bizarre. I've read other reviews about similar outbusts and I totally understand now. Based on the reviews, he can be really great or really angry. I've seen both sides after 3 visits and after that uncomfortable encounter I don't think it's worth the unpredictable volatility. read more

I went to this guy to get my irons regripped, and honestly, he did a solid job. I appreciated his work and was ready to come back for more--wanted to support a local business. On a separate day, I asked if he could regrip my putter. I told him I already had the grip and simply asked if he could do it for \$10 instead of \$15. It was a polite ask--no pressure, just a question. He said "sorry," and I respectfully replied, "no problem," and thanked him. That should've been the end of it. But then, out of nowhere, he sends me a long, over-the-top message saying I "spoiled his evening," claiming "dickering" isn't part of his business, and then jacks up the price to \$25 out of spite. Seriously? That kind of reaction is not only unprofessional--it's borderline hostile. I wasn't trying to scam him, I just asked a question like any normal customer might. If he had calmly explained his reasoning--that he charges for labor regardless of whether the grip is provided--I would've understood. I might've even gone ahead with the service. But instead, I got guilt-tripped and talked down to like I had personally offended him. I was ready to be a loyal, repeat customer, but now I wouldn't go back even if he offered it for free. If you're thinking about going here, just know the work might be decent, but the attitude is volatile, and the customer service? Absolutely toxic. read more

The countdown begins! Two more short days and I'll be on the Callippe links with my Man Crush. For clarity, confident straight men can have Man Crushes. Those a little less secure find them discomfiting. This established ... So me and MC are going to raise our clubs in fellowship on Saturday in Pleasanton, where golfing is pleasant. I realized last week, however, that my grips were smooth as a baby's bottom, and while I'd be able to raise the clubs the follow-through would probably end with a seven iron 50 yards down the fairway. I needed to get me some sticky new grips. The helpful fellows in the pro shop gave me Michael's number. He's the go-to person they said, for grips, custom fitting, lie adjustment. And he's a micro-business to boot. I'm a micro-business too! I heart micro-businesses. Michael took my clubs, gave me a reasonable quote, and had the work finished and ready when he promised he would. The experience was replete with a show of some of his collected memorabilia, conversations about the game, ideas on how to make the experience a little bit better. He makes an index card for his customers (because mark my words, once you go you'll be coming back) and in addition to your vitals he records a single word - the customer's answer when M asks for a one-word description of what golfing means to them. Started up golf again in the pandemic and bought some new clubs, had to shift out some of the shafts and was able to track Michael down at the same location and he still had my old card in his file. Mike's shop is his garage and it's filled with golf clubs and tools. He doesn't have a virtual driving range or the latest tech to measure ball flight, spin, etc. What he has is experience, people skills and a great encyclopedic knowledge of how and why golf balls fly. I was using a TaylorMade R9 driver at the time and wanted more distance like most golfers. Perhaps stiffer shaft, differently weighted head or even less than the 10.5 degree loft. We measured my swing speed. He studied my swing and made me a driver. It had more loft 11 degrees, 1/2 inch shorter, more flex in shaft and a nonadjustable light weight head. Crazy, right? I gained 10-15 yards with no worse accuracy. The R9 was stock off-the-shelf at $499. My custom was almost $200 cheaper. He regripped my irons and tuned up my putter. Mike is great! 5/5 I came here initially because my 7 iron had come apart from its shaft and needed to get it reattached. I email Mike and he gives me a very welcoming call and soon enough an appointment for me to bring in my club was made. So as I go in, I read on yelp about the other patrons that Mike has helped and I ask if Mike could help analyze my swing. No problem. He looks at how I swing and makes some suggestions on what I should do. As he looks over my 7 iron, we talk about golf and about different aspects of golf. I really don't know where the time went but before I knew it, I was there for over an hour! He gave great advice and took the time to not only really treat me like a valued customer, but a friend. I had tried to replace the grips on two putters and I couldn't get the grips far enough down since I did not have a vise. So, I asked Michael if he thought he could help. He was able to save the grips by removing them and putting them on properly. He showed me his technique and he even threw in a putting tip as he noticed I was bent over too much and told me to try standing up taller as when I was bent over, that sometimes that can cause a pull in your putting stroke. I'm just getting interested in playing golf having hacked my way around a dozen or so courses my whole life. Purchased a set of clubs from a 'reputable' store but wanted tacky grips fitted. I'm 23 years old, i've been playing golf for 14 years, i've been going to Michael since my freshman year of high school, and i refuse to go to anyone else. He is simply the best. When it comes to customer service, he's the best. When it comes to knowledge about golf/golf club, he's the best. He understands golf and especially understands golf clubs. He had me swing a few times, measured my height, measured my swing, and some other stuff...and in less than 30 minutes he knew what i needed. On another visit, i needed my brand new irons bent to my specs. instead of doing what most club makers do and base how much each club needs to be bent on ONE club, Michael had me swing each and every club and had it bent according to that club. and lo and behold almost every club was swung differently. Micheal is beyond great, he's the difference from working for a paycheck to working with passion. He looks at your swing, get club speeds to determine what's best for your game and went through a couple other steps like swinging at a black mat to see how the lie is hitting the ground. He adjusted my clubs so it would hit the ground flat so the club will hit square and it helped my game so much. Also showed me grips and sized it based on my grip and hand size, I picked the Winn DriTac grip witch are so comfortable it feels like cushions on your hands. I brought him a full set of clubs 4-9, PW, W, Driver, F wood, hybrid, 52W, 56W, 60W, he fitted everything and re griped my Driver and wedges, I dropped them off on a Monday around 4pm and left them there because I live close by and wasn't planning on playing the next day. He texted me back the same night saying everything is done and will be ready to pick up in the AM, I was shocked to see how fast he got to my clubs knowing he had other customers clubs there getting fitted also. I would never go to any BIG golf store to get fitted by a guy that wouldn't show you the good customer service Micheal shows, even though he works out of his garage, like they say "doesn't matter what it look like on the outside, what matters is what in the inside". My wife and I made an appointment for Saturday morning and Michael carefully took out measurements, analyzed our clubs and swings and made some recommendations. We ended up shortening and regripping (Winn Dritac Grips) all of her clubs. We also shortened my driver and regripped three of my clubs. For the first time in my life I think that 5 stars are not enough to describe Michael Clark and his job! I am a 3 hcp golfer from Italy and I'm in Berkeley to study and trough internet I found out about Michael.. I needed to get fitted for my Mizuno irons so I called him and on the same day he had time to see me.. We spent 2 and a half hours analyzing my swing and needs and at the end of the session he made from my 7 iron a demo club to try in the range, fixed my putter and ordered grips for the new clubs. It was GREAT! Michael is very professional and is always looking for perfection. Everything that comes out from the shop needs to be perfect. Since I didn't know a lot of persons here, he put me in touch with people to play golf with and even with one other Italian and gave me a lot of great tips on what to do next, since when I'm going back to Italy I want to become a professional. It seems that everyone is giving Michael 5 stars. You know what? It is well deserved. The old adage of "you get what you pay for" is an understatement when it comes to the quality of workmanship and care you get from Michael. You can read the other reviews and get a sense of the time and effort he puts into making sure your clubs are set to YOUR specifications. So I won't drone on about these amazing qualities. What I will talk about, are the little things. Some may find this type of stuff non noteworthy, but for me, it makes all the difference. I went in to get my ping isi copper beryllium clubs reshafted. I'd had them for 16 years and to say that I am emotionally attached to them is not quite selling the picture. Any golf place can change the shafts of a club. Michael took the time to make sure that each shaft was "set" correctly in each club head. He explained to me that every shaft has a slight difference, as they are not perfect all the way around. So he test each and every shaft and made sure that they were all seated identically in each club head. It's the little things. I then noticed that the immense amount of crud i.e. dirt, grass, etc that had been built up on the clubs was gone. He took the time to clean the clubs! It's the little things. I couldn't wait to take these gems out for a test drive, so I immediately drove to tilden golf course and hit some balls. Sheer perfection. They felt better than before and I know it is because of the way they were fitted by Michael. As I was running through my irons, I noticed the last small detail that Michael touched on. On the base of each of the irons is the etched denotation of what club it is. When I first purchased them, they had white paint embedded. This paint had been worn off a looooong time ago. Michael refilled those denotations with fresh white paint! It's the little things. Michael genuinely loves golf and cares about his work. I met Michael a month ago at Tilden Park GC putting on the practice green. We started talking about golf and he gave me his business card before I left. A month or so went by and I decided to have my set re-gripped, it was time. Michael took great pains to craft clubs that are perfectly set up for me and my game has improved dramatically after being fit and his clubs are a work of art. If you are serious about your game and are looking to invest in quality equipment, you would be a fool to buy something off the shelf. I was intimidated initially just to call Michael because I'd never had custom clubs before, never even had my (12 year old) clubs re-gripped or anything. I was worried that going to a specialist would be over my head, above my skill set, etc... I should not have been worried. I should have called him sooner. Michael is a true professional. Even better, he is casual, down to earth, easy going, and made the entire transaction seem like it was between friends. He's got an incredible work space in North Berkeley, with walls covered in golf memorabilia and the tools of his trade set up in an ergonomic efficiency belaying his expertise. Best of all? Now that I've had a chance to play for a month or so using the new set of clubs that he built me, I am LOVING the game more than ever! After reading the reviews on Yelp, I emailed Michael about getting my putter shortened. He responded the same day with a friendly, informative email. I called the next day and set up an appointment. I am new to golf and received a nice hand-me-down putter from my dad. I knew that I needed to have the putter shortened, and I figured that someone would just have to chop a few inches off the end of it. I was totally wrong! Michael spent nearly an hour with me studying my putting stance, how I held and positioned the putter, etc. to determine the optimal length for my putter. He explained the different factors that determine whether a club really fits you, and checked multiple times to make sure that my new putter length would be right for me. I am really psyched about my "new" putter now, and I will definitely return to Michael for any further club adjustments. He made me feel like a valued customer right from the beginning. When I showed up for my appointment, there was another gentleman there who was probably going to spend a lot more money than I was, but Michael treated us both with equal respect and kept his appointment with me. I'd been thinking about getting my clubs fitted for a long time but always put it off. I didn't really know where to go and I figured I'd wait until I got my swing under control first. Now that I've gotten my clubs fitted, I'm kicking myself for not going five years ago. Just like everyone says, Michael truly is a great guy. He's friendly, funny knowledgable and really patient. We spent about an hour and a half, which was longer than I realized because it was such a great experience. It was a combination of talking to a golf expert, getting swing pointers, taking measurements and swings, and most importantly, learning and seeing how club adjustments can really help. I ended up getting my lie angle for my irons adjusted and got grips that better fit my hands. It made a huge difference. I'm a lot more comfortable and relaxed at address now and I'm definitely hitting the ball better. Think about all the time and effort you put into trying to get better at the game. A session with Michael will probably be the best investment money and time-wise you'll make. In fact, I'd go so far as to say...don't get new clubs, just get your clubs fitted by Michael. Michael is a true professional and someone I wish I had visited sooner. I came in to get my clubs re gripped and my lofts/lies adjusted. He turned my clubs around in less than 24 hours; dropped off on a Friday for the regrip and we set up a time Saturday morning to adjust the clubs; he worked while I swung each club in my bag which took about an hour. He explained what he was doing with his equipment and made sure I was a part of the process. I learned a lot about my equipment and the effects the wrong lie can have on ball flight. All my lie angles were adjusted flatter and now consistent through the set. Michael made sure the loft spacing was appropriate and tweaked my wedge spacing to reduce the gaps between my wedges. We found a few clubs in my bag were way off from where they should be. He even polished the clubs, touched up the numbers, and touched up a sky marks on my 3 wood at no extra charge. If you need any work done on your clubs or are looking for a custom set do yourself a favor and Michael a call. His knowledge is extensive: covering clubs and their components, local golf courses and golf in general. It is clear he loves the game. His approach is thorough. He is very precise and detailed.
