This review is based on their failure to enforce social distancing. I tried going to the driving range yesterday and while there were "Social Distance" signs up, there was zero enforcement. Both levels of the driving range were packed, all stalls were in use and multiple people were crowded behind the range hitters waiting their turn. Not only was it impossible to keep a 6 foot distance, it was almost impossible not to actually bump into other people at the range. This should be like a store. I've only had the opportunity to visit this place once. But I can tell you right now it's definitely a vibe. I went in for my first time today and the cash register for the range was very helpful and even walked me through the prices on range balls baskets. The way everyone greeted me when I walked in made it sure I would return again. Plus the greenery after the storms makes this place a gem to go to. This place is like the dive bar of golf clubs - and we love it like that! It's SUPER low key, old school, and down market. It in no way resembles what most of us imagine when we hear the term "golf club". Adjust your expectations and you'll have fun. There's a 9-hole course that is very basic and barely maintained. There's a dilapidated 2-tier driving range that is super fun and hilarious, trying to hit garbage cans. The restaurant is really a dive bar with quite decent but very basic food, like burgers and fried stuff. The wines are "red" and "white", but the bar is actually kinda fun. It's a great place to take kids to try golf or hitting a ball. Our family and friends love it, but if you're expecting any kind of upscale amenities or elegance, forget it. It was my first time here, I let everyone who helped me know i wasn't familiar with where to go or what times they were open but still went out around 7-7:30pm, Went to play the 9 holes available and came back little after 8PM and was locked in. I wish there was a sign or someone gave us a heads up because the lights outside stay on and you cant see the club from out there. Also no one answered the phone and we couldn't find any emergency contact numbers anywhere.... Montclair golf enterprises is an institution. No, it doesn't have the finest amenities, but it's a serviceable range with a fun little par 3 that won't break the bank or take all day. The service can be curt, but if your skin is that thin, you've got bigger problems- although I bet you're a great yelper... In a world that is increasingly sacrificing character for homogeneity, nothing would be more tragic than to see this place get turned into a top golf. The bar is a dyed in the wool dive without trying to be and without feeling seedy. The cats that wander around, occasionally hopping up on the barstool next to you for scritches behind the ear, only contribute to the sense that you've found your way to a place that time has left behind- in the best way possible. read more

This business advertises that it is "open" until 9 pm, but be aware that they are not actually open for business until this publicly advertised time. After spending the previous 8 hours in San Francisco, Walnut Creek, and then back to Oakland with wife, baby, and toddler, I couldn't wait to peacefully smack a few balls alone with my brand new set of irons to finish my Saturday night. However, after arriving at 8:34 PM, I was informed by the kind gentleman at the range counter, who works for minimum wage (in his words), that he would be fired if he allows anyone on the range after 8:30 PM. I planned to plow through a small bucket, something that can take me about 15 minutes, and requires no work or service by anyone. With multiple people still on the range, I explained that I would make sure to finish before those still out there, but this would not sway the sad, underpaid fellow. I was referred upstairs to talk with James, in charge for the night. James succinctly told me there was nothing he could do because of this brilliant policy. Perhaps I could have swayed him to let me on. But after offering double the cost of the bucket to bend this well thought out rule by 4 minutes, and after explaining the predicament, that I unfortunately assumed that golf activities would still be available 26 minutes before closing at the Montclair GOLF club, alas, I was denied a final time, "yea sorry, can't do it." Or at least that's what I think he said, but I'm not sure if I could hear him over the cacophony of noise from the 10 people still at the bar of this apparently closed golf club. One star for this establishment that manages to be a worse driving range than a bar, and that's saying something, since it's a pretty bad bar. If you like the falsely advertised business hours of an unposted and stupidly rigid rule that serves no purpose except to waste my time then go here If you like the rancid smell of ball sweat and microbiology lab that fills the air and emanates from their disgusting carpets, then go here. FYI that's mold you're smelling, and I don't know how they pass inspections. I've smelled better gum disease. I feel sorry for anyone that actually eats here. read more

It's a decent driving range with a bar. The owner is very rude and will be upset if you do not pay "cash". The restaurant staff/bar is nice. I would only recommend this place if you are "desperate" to hit golf balls. While I was the next customer in line, the owner took the next customer and said "cash is always first". This review is for the pitch-n-putt golf course. I hadn't visited this course in ten years and it was like stepping right back in time. Nothing's changed, not the green fees, not the crabby guy behind the counter, the beer is still cheap, I think the range balls haven't even been replaced in all that time. Anyway, $9 a round - I almost hesitate to share this info - I had the course to myself for nearly three hours! I dropped four balls and it was like playing four rounds for the price of one. I pulled my bag but you really only need a wedge and putter, not a single hole is longer than 80 yards. The tee boxes are all rubber mats, so no damage to your clubs, the greens are fast and passably maintained. A fun and quiet afternoon working on my short approach. read more

The owners are so aggressively rude and unprofessional that even after decades of going there, it's time to call it quits. What used to be a fun place to have a beer and hit some golf balls in a dive bar atmosphere has become an uncomfortable experience with the owners yelling and just generally being hostile; it is like they hate their customers. Doesn't matter if it's kids (witnessed first hand on multiple occasions them yelling or being rude to kids) or long time customers who spend a lot of money there. Would stay as far away from the food as possible. Wish someone else would take the place over as the place/concept is great for what it is, but wow on the behavior of the owner/family (doesn't apply to the bartenders who in my experience are nice). read more

Living in So Cal now and back in the Bay visiting my folks with my son for the holiday and wanted to hit some balls when we were out here. I didn't play golf growing up and never knew this place was this close! 5 min away from the house. While looking for a golf course I made sure to read the reviews before I came and brought cash. No problems. Me Lee treated us very well. Joked around with us and made us feel very welcome. He talked to my son and told us to have fun. We first came out at night and had a blast. Some folks were also out but we had no problems getting on the second deck to hit a couple buckets for an hour and a half or so. No issues with spacing, mats were good and soft, even had some rubber tees available. My son just started to play this year but hitting his Pings pretty well so when we came back today we decided to go on the 9 hole pitch and putt. As an adult all you need is a wedge and a putter. He used his wedge and a 9 and the 9 was even too far. Even though it's a pitch and putt it's deceivingly difficult. The fairways are tight and easy to lose balls. Trees overhang so almost better to bump and run. Some holes on a side of a hill so have to be accurate. But with that being said, so easy to walk on and play. There was a large group in front that checked in just before us (8 non golfers) so the younger Asian gentleman took care of us with a large bucket of balls to use on the range so we wouldn't be waiting for the 8 players on every hole. How awesome is that. If you know what to expect (bring cash, driving range is "ok", range balls a bit old, pitch and putt is "ok") you'll have a blast. read more

I have been a customer here for decades, largely because they always had excellent food. Their chef of many years retired recently after suffering a severe on the job injury, and the quality of the food immediately went downhill. Moreover, the owner does not appear to care. I've never written a review before but was very compelled to after my experience here. Came for the first time as a beginner (which the website claimed this course is great for). Went into the store to pay for my tee time and was immediately yelled at by the older gentleman. He said he didn't care about the reservation I made online and was still super rude when I agreed to pay in person the full price - despite having already paid a portion online. At that point I just wanted to play. The experience left such a bad experience in my fiancé and I's mouth that we ended up just leaving early and definitely don't plan to return again. This review is been a long time coming. I will try to keep it short since there are many of the reviews that say the same way. Bottom line is that I've been coming here since I was a teenager 30 years ago. Absolutely no improvements have been made to this driving range. Very disappointing since this is a great location with easy access to the freeway and the Montclair Village. As you'll see in a couple of pictures I will post, the ball situation is just horrific. Barely any dimples on the balls at all and most of which are chewed up or split. How much effort it take to write a yardage distance on some of those barrels that they have on the range so we can accurately estimate the distances of our clubs? Is that what we're here for? Come on guys! You would be surprised if you invest a dollar or two what your return on the investment might be... Look at that bar situation and restaurant for example. If you didn't know what you would think you were still in the 60s by entering this dungeon. Anyway, back to the range itself. The stalls are incredibly tight and as you will see in the pictures, the owners have wrapped the structural post with strips of rug so that you don't damage your driver heads swinging the club. Another giveaway that the stalls are too close, you see the stalls are pelted by golf balls and therefore wood is splintering. Again, cutting corners and squeezing stalls to get an extra dollar when the place is never full anyway. They have a small nine hole chipping course on the premises that I haven't used for years so I can't comment on that but that is certainly good if you have a kid that you'd like to show him the game. Lastly, there's a very small practice green that is below average. I'm tired of complaining for the day By the way, went to Alameda golf course driving range yesterday and to my surprise they just installed all new mats! They're not the hard mats like at Montclair that feel like you're hitting the asphalt but instead these have cushion. On top of that, they also have a device that you can load all of your balls into an area in the mat that will automatically tee the ball up for you and you can select the tee height. Which also means you don't have to buy a tee Like at Montclair. Montclair, go visit other driving ranges and get some ideas put some money into this place. read more

Sub par, at best. I used to love this place but the last two times I've been were terrible. A few weeks ago I went for the first time in over 5 years. Golf was great! The pro shop staff was friendly. The food, however, not so much. I got terribly sick from a "sandwhich" and the bar tender was busy on her phone most of the night. Any way, I gave it one more shot the other night. Again, golf was fun. Everything else, ample room for improvement. I hope they get their act together...it's just a shame I won't be there to see it. Maybe in another 5 years? I sure hope so. The only reason I'd rate this one star is that the driving range is actually not bad and the bar/kitchen staff is really nice. The biggest problem with this place is the old man. I've been coming here for so long and every interaction with the old man is just, to mildly put it, unpleasant. I usually ignore him and just move on, but today he was just a Grade A.... I got some clubs to shoot some balls at the range. After a while my buddies wanted to play the course. So I went back in there to pay for it and asked if I could swap out the borrowed wood and the 8 iron for a wedge and a putter. At first he couldn't understand what I wanted and just started being rude. When my buddy explained him the same thing, he just started screaming at me that I can't use the wood and the iron on the course. And I'm like "I know, that's why I want to swap these out". He kept going on for a while before eventually figuring it out and then just said it's gonna cost me extra. This wasn't my first time here and it doesn't cost extra. Meanwhile he's really nice to all the other customers that came along. I wonder why? I think I've had enough of his shenanigans. Me or my buddies aren't going back even if they paid us to. read more

Terrible, terrible, terrible. This course has so much potential given its location. However, there is very little effort put into maintaining the facilities. The 9-hole course is abysmal. The green is poorly maintained, if maintained at all. There were large patches of dirt everywhere, tee boxes were shrouded with bushes threatening to envelope you and getting in the way of your club. Ball cleaners were caked with bird poop. No care is given to the grounds. Signs are obscured. Rats are running and burrowing in the vines near the 8th and 9th holes. Parking is very easy and the driving range looks just fine. Oscar the Grouch runs the pro shop and he gets annoyed when you ask a question. Questions are asked because things are not apparent. It's located right off the 13 highway. Come if you are desperate to hit a golf ball. Honestly, you'd get more practice with pitching or chipping at a nice park in Piedmont. The grass here is uneven, dry, and weed is growing in the fairway. Not the type of challenge that would be particularly helpful for your game. read more

I was looking to hit some balls on the range and this place seemed like a nice small local range to try out. I proceeded to go inside the clubhouse and paid $12 cash for a medium bag of balls (they pressure you to pay cash), after paying, I go to get my clubs from right outside the clubhouse and an older Asian man tells me to leave the balls inside while I go get my bag. I told him my bag is right outside and then he had the audacity to tell me I might "steal the balls". The fact that this guy treats a paying customer so rudely and disrespectfully is enough for me to never come here again. The young girl who was helping me was very nice and the people at the range were great but the guy in the shop is intolerable. This is my first and last experience with this place. read more

Popped in to hit some balls at lunch. The older guy behind the counter looked at the person with me (my wife) for about 5 seconds and then snickered at her. I'm not sure what he found so amusing so I asked and he replied with, "nothing". It's disheartening to decide to spend my hard earned money to practice a sport that has brought so much joy, just to be made fun of or laughed at for whatever reason. I got the feeling that he was laughing at the fact that we are people of color by the amount of time he spent looking at my wife as though he thought something was funny. I take family to the Restaurant at least 2 times a month for breakfast and dinner. A pretty compete menu of traditional american food including burgers, great salads, prawns super service and reasonable pricing. The French toast is some of the best I've had A family friendly atmosphere with plenty of big screens to watch Oakland A's games. The bar can get a bit lively, but everyone is respectful and nice. The golf range is a double deck facility with lights. The range could defiantly use some TLC. For example, they could mark distances on the barrels you are aiming at and also have distances clearly marked out on the range of 100, 150, 175, 200, 250 and 300 yards clearly marked. There is a challenging nine hole par 3 course in the Redwoods which you only need a wedge and putter. The putting green near the parking lot is another example of what can be improved. The practice putting green can be much larger and better maintained for a nice place to practice putting. The bar inside is a throw back where locals hang out out with friendly bartenders. They serve pub style, fried food which is decent. The owner, Mr. Lee and even his son are rude and unfriendly!! The others workers that work there are not. Cash only! Not sure why they do this. In short, the owners can make changes and be more friendly to make this golf facility much better! read more

I used to come here with the boys and hit the driving range now I'm a father it's been years since I been here. Brought my boys here to let them play. Got here here at 11am went inside and thought 3 large bucket of balls. The elder asian guy working there looked at us and said what do you want? I said we are here trying to purchase 3 buckets of balls. He said ok why didnt you tell me. Well first off you wasnt there when we got there and second I just didnt like his attitude. So I handle him my credit card and he asked you Asian you dont have cash. I said I don't like carry cash. He said well sucks for you and I have the pay a credit card fee now. Ok... I'm just like uhh wow that's rude especially in front of kids. So once he rung me up he threw my credit card back at me to where it fell on the ground and my son pick it up. I know it's been years I haven't been here but damn service was just bad. My sons shouldn't even see this type of treatment let alone from an older gentleman working there. Went upstairs to and it was almost packed. Luckily we has two spots in the middle. Spent an hr here and left. While leaving the same worker had the same attitude to another guy paying with card too saying you don't have 12 dollars in cash to pay why not?? I live in west oakland and am a member at Tilden and marina in San Leandro. I only come to this place if I am in a hurry. The range is all rocks and very short. Since it's made up of all rocks the balls get damaged. It's 12$ for a large bucket of completely torn apart balls. They do have a noce little bar and the food is pretty good. I go for the poppers when I go. All in all. Not bad if you are working on your short game and don't mind hitting shitty balls off of shitty mats. Watch your club on your swing. You may hit a 4x4 piece of wood as many others have. I have a couple times. I've never had problems with the Chinese guy that runs the place as many others have. I usually have cash on me so never had to deal with the visa problems either. All in all it's a small, under average quality range. But they have lights at night. Good snack foods and beer. I would recommend Tilden or San Leandro for the range. They have nicer facilities and nicer balls/mats. It's a good place if you are a beginner and just are practicing your swing or hitting straight. read more
