And while I'm inclined to offer some futile observation on the single stars because of the tone and how I get some sort of metaphorical reminder of what ails us outside this sweet little glen I won't trifle with this because it won't do anything anyway and hopefully the Sons and Daughters of Single Star will actually take heed of their forebears and stay away for as that will help the hidden valley of happiness remain in its present state. Which for me, in my humble opinion, is kind of perfect. Beyond description nuts that I've never been down here after all the years going to church up top wondering hmm what's that driving range net down below seems like a funny place for such a thing. Bruce made me go. Eight little holes of madness for nine bucks but he paid because I was confused. Hitting off mats that tip this way and that greens so fuzzy and slow but who cares really for nine bucks it's like Golfland on acid without clowns and windmills. There's a creek that whispers to you throughout and it's just so sylvan I felt I had grown cloven feet. The driving range will be for the next visit and the area into which I will hit resembled a cross between Chernobyl and a rodeo ground replete with barrels filled by clowns just waiting for the bull and to save me. Bruce and I played the eight holes and a couple of them twice to break the tie and then went inside for burgers and the bar reminded me of a cross between the 19th hole at Death Valley and The Alley. The food was delicious. The fellow that took care of us was solid and nice and added to a happy mossy old school vibe. The people around had clearly been coming for years and didn't care about the single star world that waited for them and all of us back topside where everybody else passed their time. You want simple things in life? This is a simple thing in life. Dispense with that other nonsense and give this place a try. Cheers! read more

I've been coming here for the last 6 years for the driving range, and sadly, after today's experience will not be coming back. Sure, this is a dive bar meets driving range so you know you'll be using really CRAPPY golf balls and the mats will be OLD. For years, I didn't mind this because it's one of the closest ranges in Oakland and there are lights at night. Well, today convinced me not to return here: The credit card machine did not appear to be working. The worker (this man has been working here for years) directed me to the ATM machine. I told him I might have enough cash on me, but also don't want to use the ATM machine because of the extra fees. This is what he said that really changed my mind about this place: "YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY THE FEE? I DON'T WANT TO PAY THE FEE! *pointing at credit card machine*" Um - I just stared back in disbelief. If a business doesn't want to pay the credit card transaction fee, then make it CASH ONLY or INCREASE YOUR PRICES or CHARGE EXTRA FOR CREDIT CARD. You've got to be kidding me. It's only $10 (credit card) for a large bucket at Tilden or Lake Chabot golf course for higher quality driving range balls - Montclair Golf Course already charges $12 for low quality balls. Man - I used to love this place because it felt like the locals came here and it was a fun place to get a beer and hit balls. I can't anymore. RIP MGC. read more

If a review can go below 1 star, that's what I would give this place. I've been to golf courses that are service dog friendly and I know there is a sign that says "no dogs allowed", I didn't see a sign that stated no service dog allowed. I walk in carrying my little Pekingese to ask and so they can see him. As soon as I walked through the doors, an older Asian gentleman approached me and said, "no dogs on any part of the property. Leave him in the car!". He said it with so much hate that I felt sickened. I was just an attendee just going to sit and watch my husband at the range. Mr Lee is one angry man. I have no idea how he is able to continue to work there. Mr lee will absolutely go crazy if you pay with a credit card. MAKE YOUR BUSINESS CASH ONLY, PROBLEM SOLVED. Read all the yelp reviews and they all complain about Mr Lee. Honestly, this would be a way better golf course if simply, Mr Lee not be there at all. Food is good but overpriced. Pretty cool that you can drink and smoke while playing. Easy parking. Do not bring your dog because they are not allowed. I hate to see dogs in the car while its scorching hot outside. You gotta buy your own tees. Balls are worn out and overpriced. You are better off going to chabot, tilden, or san leandro. Way nicer golf courses, equipment, and cheaper. read more

Came here Saturday to hit golf balls for the first time on the driving range. No reservations needed but it was almost full on that sunny afternoon. Golf clubs were only a few bucks to rent. A few reviews mentioned drinks but the bar was not open 1/23. CA COVID status just changed so maybe it will be back, though. Overall, great time! read more

Terrible first golf experience. Decided to try golf since I can't do much activity due to cancer. I try the golf range and had some fun even with bad mats and terrible golf balls. On my way out I decided to try the 9 course and thinking it's a public course (because who is paying to play on a terrible course) I immediately get attacked by a worker screaming in my face saying I'm stealing. It was a genuine mistake and I even offered to pay. But no I'm immediately banned for a small mistake. My family and friends always come here and always vouched even with the bad reviews. I should've never spent my hard earned money here. Maybe I would give it a second chance if that worker gave me an apology but that will never happen seeing how that worker reacted. Definitely would never suggest this place. I'd rather see it closed and made for something better for Montclair. Terrible read more

This is a review of the clubhouse. I actually don't play golf, but I was looking for a new joint for meals and drinks. The food here is excellent. Despite the basic snackbar menu, the quality and preparation is high. I recommend the mushroom omelet in the morning, and my friends just got eggs benedict. In the evening, it is a mellow affair. We got burgers and nachos and they were satisfactory. The crowd is older and family-oriented, a nice change from many Oakland hipster spots. read more

The food and drinks are better than the driving range and course. I'll only go to Montclair if I'm in a rush to hit some balls and don't want to go too far. I've gone to Montclair several times the past 20 years and nothing has changed just wear and tear over the years with no improvements. Ok so a bit of an odd review since it's a golf course but whatevs let's do this! I go here all the time for the range. Never crowded, tons of space, double decker, price for a bucket is ok. I wish I could give this place negative stars. I can't comprehend why Cliff, the manager, reacted so harshly yesterday, especially when I suggested a reasonable price adjustment for a golf bag priced at $190, offering $180 based on its Amazon listing at $179. His sudden outburst, suggesting I should never shop there again and instead buy from Amazon, was both uncalled for and disappointing. Today, I simply wanted to use my $75 coupon, but he adamantly refused and escalated the situation unnecessarily. Despite being a loyal customer who has consistently supported them, Cliff lost his temper with me and even called the police. While I didn't do anything wrong, he eventually refunded the coupon then he kicked me out the place with yelling, shouting, threatening and taking picture of my car and license(he told me that he will report to the police when they arrive). I got insulted in front of the other customers and golf instructor. It was so humiliating. The overall environment of this establishment is dismal compared to other golf courses, with no renovations. Despite my efforts to support local businesses, such as purchasing a driver, hybrid #4 and #5, putter, changing grip, hats, and gloves, and frequenting( at least12 times every month) the driving range or playing nine holes and lessons, I was treated with disrespect. Review for driving range only: this is probably Oakland's "value" driving range. Their medium bucket is ~80-110 balls for $12, which isn't bad compared to nearby driving ranges. The mats are worn down and there are bales instead of pins on the range, but that doesn't really bother me. There are two tiers of stalls, so you usually don't have to wait long. The only thing is the ambiance. It was very crowded so social distancing was difficult and it was very noisy. People were playing music and talking loudly in groups, which was distracting. Since there's a bar outside, I get the sense the venue was meant more for socializing. TLDR; If you want a driving range that's more serious so you can concentrate, I would recommend others. If you're looking to bring a group here for a fun outing like you would for mini golf, then this place is for you. read more

This experience was worth a review. I'm sure this place is liked by regulars, but at one point these regulars had to have their first visit experience. When I entered I looked around trying to figure out which way to go. This old Asian guy came up to me and asked "can I help you?" I said "Yes, I never been here before, can you show me around?" He shook his head and walked away. So I just stood there. So this other guy comes up to and asked me what I needed. I asked if that old guy worked here. He said he did. If you can mix drinking and driving (range) in the same sentence, that automatically deserve 5 stars in my book. Montclair golf course is a family owned business. It helps when the owner is Korean, and the bf is Korean, we got a free basket of balls on the house! We brought the wrong club for the driving range, which kind of tell you our golf skill level, which is pretty much 0. The owner and his son took their time and explained to us how to at least hit the ball the right way, and which club to use. And they let us use their club for free. Very very very nice people. We got the punch card per one of the yelpers suggestion (thanks so much!) For $40, you get a punch card for 5 large basket. One large basket will last you for awhile. Pretty cheap entertainment if you ask me. The best thing here is the bar. For reals, where can you really drink and be at the driving range at the same time? Here at Montclair! I have been going to this driving range for over 40 years. I have eaten there many time over the years, as well. After an illness that rendered me unable to swing a club for some time, I went to this facility this morning intending to hit small bucket of balls. Before I laid out $40 for six small buckets (quite a jump from a year or so ago), I decided to just get a small bucket. I tendered my credit card and "Mr. Lee," the operator/lessee I believe, said, curtly, "cash only." I had no cash. I told him I'd been coming there for 40 years and that I would be back in the next couple of days and pay him in cash then for the bucket I owed him for and the bucket I would be using the next time. He was obstinate. I have heard/read stories about this fellow over the years. He seems to have a monopoly to operate this facility. IT IS TIME TO PUT THE GOLF OPERATIONS out to competitive bid. read more

I would give it five stars for bat śhîte crazy old school fabulousness but I kind of want to downgrade to a three star due to no online menu for the wonderful bar that I recently had the pleasure of visiting. They don't even have a website -- just a tired old bone-thin FakeBook page from 2008. Can someone please post a menu photo. After coming up here for years, tonight I had my first bad experience. I have always loved this spot for there hamburgers, but tonight, I got the worst burger I've ever had here. My kids and I came up to hit a bucket of balls or 3, and pick up a to go order for my husband. We finished at the range and went to order a burger to go. We waited for the order, and aside from the sticky tables, it was no problem. When the food came, I didn't bother to look at it before I took it home. I didn't bother because it has never been an issue. They're always great. When I got home and my husband opened his meal, I see a preformed patty with fake grill marks. The onion rings were bland and tasteless Both items were clearly frozen, not fresh. It used to be fresh and worth the price, but not anymore. My husband was obviously pissed. He packaged it back up and went straight back and get my money back. He was told by the server that since I paid with a credit card, he couldn't give a refund. I paid with cash. My husband even had the receipt tab signed by him, the server. I even tipped him a decent tip for doing nothing but writing my order down. He wouldn't refund the money or even offer to make the meal again. He knew exactly who I was, because the order was not generic. It's was a plain burger patty with onion rings and blue cheese crumble on the side (they gave him blue cheese dressing). That's it, no frillls, but distinct. We had just left not 20 minutes earlier. He also told my husband not to come back. My husband's parents used to come here and we've been coming here for years, bringing our kids too. Now he can't come back. The customer service in the restaurant is deplorable. Not that long ago it was great, just like the food. The guy who we get the balls from is always awesome. No complaints about the range at all. I love this place and it holds a special place in my heart. BTW, its a driving range and pitch-n-putt with a good bar/restaurant, Thats it! If your looking for Top Golf then you got this f'd up. But if you want to hit some balls and crush a drink n a burger.. this is your spot. The executive course is fantastic short game practice for like $9 too. This place is small.. there's separate seating at the bar and a few tables for those who are looking for a bite to eat and watch the game. It was game 3 of the 2010 NBA Finals. Lakers vs. Celtics. There was a pretty healthy crowd there. It's not a regular sports bar where the crowd is loud and screaming at the TV.. it was just the right amount of excitement. I ordered my regular.. Cap't and Coke which could have used a little more Cap't. Just sayin'. For my NBA game meal, I ordered their daily special - Muffuletta. It was a HUGE sandwich with salami and ham, pickled relish, tomatoes and lettuce on a focaccia bun. It was yummy and HUGE. There was no way I could have finished the other half. Served with a side with fries.. it was the best "bar food" I've had in a while. Service was slow. Prices are reasonable. Portions are huge. read more

It's such a shame that one rude bartender can cause regulars like me and my husband from ever coming back! Whomever the lady bartender was this past Friday (6/23) afternoon, she needs to learn basic customer service skills. Even two other regulars noticed her b**** attitude towards me and said something and she jus rolled her eyes. I asked her for two separate lotto tickets and she just said "sure" and instead of helping me (since I had been waiting there patiently) she proceeded to take a drink order from someone else...are you kidding me?!! That customer said she was waiting for another person and that's when the RUDE "bartender" got my lotto tickets. Lady, if you don't like selling lotto tickets at a bar that SELLS lotto tickets then QUIT! If it's that big of a deal to you then you would be doing this place a favor by quitting and taking your ugly attitude with you. I've been coming here for a long time, gotten drinks and lotto tickets, never had a problem before with other bartenders. I use to bartend and sell other merchandise in there and never was I rude to a customer who wanted to purchase something else besides beer. I guess she was just unhappy that she wouldn't be getting a tip from a lotto purchase. Seriously management, what are you doing hiring a bartender like her? She makes you look very very very bad. I would give this place negative stars if possible. My girlfriend and I came here based on a recommendation from a friend. He noted this place was kind've a hole in the wall tin cup like driving range with 55 gallon oil drums and all. When we pulled up there were no signs pointing to the range so we went into the pro shop. There was an older asian man eating his lunch. We asked him what the easiest way to the range was. He walked us over to a table of medium and large baskets of balls and asked which one we wanted. Upon telling him we'd take a large basket ($12), I reached for my credit card. As I went to hand him my card he looked at my money clip and said, "you have cash...why aren't you paying with cash?!" Initially we thought he was joking...we were wrong. We explained to him we get cash back on our card. He started to scream while spitting his food out at us about how he doesnt want to pay credit card fees. Well shit, if you operate a business and accept credit cards that's not really the customer's problem. We didnt want to argue so we gave him cash. He continued to scream at us that he'll charge us more next time if we used a credit card. I kindly informed him that's illegal and will be making a call to the Better Business Bureau. Please do not support this business. Stopped by yesterday for the first time and it's very clear the owner is crazy for one thing - money. There's a sign at the register stating the credit card minimum was $10. I asked for a medium bucket of balls and asked how much. He said $10 so I handed him my card to pay. Immediately he puts on this nasty facial expression and yells "why are you using your credit card for only $10". I responded by saying your policy says it's a minimum purchase of $10 so I don't see the issue. He the proceeds to process payment via card, but pounds his fist against the counter in a very aggressive and threatening manner. I wish I could give the Driving Range 0 stars. The balls are old and dead, and the mats are dangerous they are so cheap and old. You might as well be hitting off concrete. Now after all that said, the final straw is the price. It is $8.00 for a small bucket. If you want what they cal "better balls' you are charged $13.00. Other driving ranges in the area charge $5.00 for a small bucket and give you more balls. These people are just ripping off the City of Oakland as operators of the city owned facility. They put no money into improving the facility or the experience, they just keep taking money out. The City could do better with new operators. I will say, the food is decent, but it does not make it attractive enough to go there to hit balls. I have found alternatives so much better. I have been coming here since the place was opened and operated by a group of local investors. I will not be back. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would . Tonight I talked my 13 year old daughter into going to hit balls with her daddy. She came home in tears !!! Apparently Cliff the manager called her dad "cheap" for taking and returning some tee things that his brother James hands out freely! Cliff continued to follow them to the parking lot with his video camera calling my husband a thief for not paying for some $ 3-$4 tee thing that he returned! My husband has been going there for over 10 years regularly yet apparently Cliff didn't know his name! Cliff called 911 over this!!! Is this man crazy!!! Well I called tonight to figure out why they think they can video tape a hysterical 13 year old? My sweet baby girl! Well apparently my husband got tired of Cliff putting his phone in his face, calling the police and videoing my daughter and knocked the phone out of the crazy mans hand! As I called to understand everything His brother says "He put his hands on my family " Well not really true... Not to bring race in the picture but I can. My husband is black, I'm white and I've seen this stereotyping before up there from the father! I will send their sorry asses $20.00 tomorrow and I hope that more people will stay away!!! Golf is a beautiful game. It conjures images of lush rolling fairways and picturesque oceanside greens. But like everything in life, you get what you pay for... The nine hole course is an experience. There isn't a single hole over 90 yards, so grab a sand wedge and a putter and leave the rest of your clubs in your car. The course is maintained worse than a homeless guy's beard, and the putting surfaces are about as predictable as a 3 year old's mood swings. After your round you will probably feel like having a couple cold beers. The moment you walk into the bar you feel like you have been transported into an alternate universe. Uhhh.... Is this a golf course bar? Is this Montclair? Wait... is this prison? As far as the eye can see there is nothing but biker dudes and "regulars" who look like they will stab you if you sit in "their seat." Just like the course, the sooner you get out of there the better. read more

I really do want to give it a better rating but I have to be critical of this place. The location is awesome! Nestled in the hills near freeway 13 and across from Montclair. Scenery around the area is beautiful! The facility is pretty old and run down though. The bottom deck of the driving range is too small for you to swing your golf clubs fully. You have to go to the top deck to swing your clubs. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable though! I got myself a large bucket of golf balls to hit and did I do just that! $10 to nail these balls 250-300 yards with my driver! Practice my short game on the putting greens. PGA tour here I come! Hahaha! Yeah right! Hopefully The City of Oakland opens their eyes and do this place some good. read more

He did much better than I did and was really smacking 'em out of there. A fun way to spend a couple of hours on a day off. This is an Oakland gem, I was driving by this place for years and didn't even know it was there... The pitch and putt course is ridiculous, but that is part of the charm. Bring a thermos full of whatever, or smoke whatever, and its fun. I dinged my brand new flop wedge pitching onto a green, if you're a digger you will definitely find bits of gravel below the grass.. but strolling around a short 9 holes with 2 or 3 clubs on any day is better than not at all, i have had some of my worst 9 hole scores here, its actually harder than a full length nine. Or maybe it was the bloody mary's. The Range is an easy place to spread your wings, get a prepaid 5 bucket card, saves a little dough per bucket. Or you can pay extra for a bucket of fresh balls, if your fancy, or trying to be extremely douchey. The shop and the staff make this place what it is, and give this place its character.. I have ordered several clubs at good prices from the shop, and the guys there will give you unbiased, informed advice, they have several fitting carts, they don't have everything under the sun to hit and try, but enough to get you sorted.. they also re-grip and extend/shorten/bend clubs etc.. Its a good spot, I go here with a few friends or solo just as much, sometimes just for a beer and a bucket, sometimes for food. I can sneak up here during a work day and and its quite enough to take and make some work calls and grab lunch... * Sometimes I try to avoid late afternoon right before sunset for hitting balls, although it is a nice time to be in the valley, if you are trying to gauge your swing and golf shots, you will loose them in the sun, depending on time of year, etc.. no biggie, just worth mentioning after 50 or so visits. read more
