I've lived in Kernersville for about 8 years now and this has been one of my regular spots the entire time I've been here ! My family as well always comes with me and they treat us with nothing but the most excellent service , the food is on point !!! EVERY SINGLE TIME If I may add the people who work here always are so nice to us no matter who it is & truly every time i come here I know it's going to be a great time & trust, im enjoying every. last. biteeeeee !! I'm not sure how many Monte De Rey Mexican restaurants there are in the area, 5 or 6 I think. Most, if not all, of them are owned by Manuel Hernandez, who also is connected with Xcaret in downtown WS. The menu here is typical of most sit down Tex-Mex restaurants in the area. There are several dishes served here that I have tried that are worth noting. Two of these items are pure Tex-Mex items, originating in the USA - fajitas in Texas and the California burrito in San Diego. I found both items to be good and well sized, so a decent value as well, especially the shrimp fajitas. Note that the California Burrito served here does not contain French fries, which the original one does, and so do most such burritos served in our area! A third item is a very simple dish, pepino - chilled, sliced cucumber that has been peeled. I douse this with lime juice, salt, and Tajin, let it sit for a few minutes, then dig in - a very refreshing start to a meal. The last item is Birria de Res, the stew that can be served as such, and is the basis for Quesabirria Tacos, though the tacos are fairly recent, the Birria stew has been around for centurie. While in Mexico the meat is most often goat, in the vast majority of the USA it is beef. The beef, often chuck roast, is slow simmered in a sauce with plenty of dry red peppers, vinegar, garlic, and other herbs and spices. The meat is shredded, plated in a bowl, and the broth (same as the consommé with the tacos) is ladled on. This is served with chopped white onion and cilantro. I get a side of jalapeños, and sometimes cambray if available. This is a very, very good dish when properly seasoned and seasoned. The dish served here is nice and plentiful, read more

I really like this place although today my food was just ok. The service was excellent so maybe they just had an off day. I have been several times and have always been pleased with the service, quantity and quality of food and the prices are good too. It does seem the salsa has changed a bit. Overall, Every time we visit, the service is prompt. The food is hit or miss (some dishes are favored over others), and we love the colorful atmosphere. My daughter calls it the Coco place. We love the queso. The chicken dishes I've eaten have all been great. The carne asada lacks a little seasoning for my tastes. The beef quesadilla is made with ground beef and is full. The taste is okay, but a lot greasier than preferred. The taco salad is good, we love the beans, and they have modela negro on draft. Step into a bright and colorful Mexican fiesta! We arrived for lunch and found they actually do lunch combo specials on Sundays. I don't know of any other Mexican restaurant that does this! You also get free chips and salsa. I had a combo with a chicken quesadilla and a beef taco. The chicken is stewed with peppers and onions and is very flavorful. The ground beef had too much salt. Decided to pick a new Mexican spot here in Kernersville. It's was my 1 on 1 with my boss at work. He usually take us out every 6 months to catch up and address things we have. Glad I came here, we both enjoy our meal. The space was so vibrant and colorful. It was pretty quiet too so me and my boss was able to talk about business. I had the jamaica drink which is a deep Mexican iced tea. Made out of hibiscus flower. It was a little tart but wasn't so bad, kinda of remind me of cranberry juice. I also order their lunch special 11, came with either chicken or beef chimichanga ( i got chicken) the chicken was shredded, chimichangas fried perfectly top with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and surprising guacamole they usually charge extra for that but this came with it. You also get rice and beans but I did not want any beans today. The rice is your standard Mexican rice, pair very well with the chimichanga. My boss got the ACP which I didn't want to be weird and take a picture of it lol. I was trying to Yelp and be about business so sorry for the limit photos. I will definitely be back to try other things and take more photos of the decor. They even bring you a sweet treat for free after the meal which is very cool! I think it's like a fried tortilla with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and like strawberry jam/syrup? I really enjoyed it. Stopped by because it was National Margarita Day and ordered the house margarita. I don't believe there was any tequila in the drink. None. Nothing. When we mentioned it to the waitress, she said the bartender had not come in yet and the servers have to make the drinks. She said they don't always know how! Ummmmmmmm! When in doubt, ask, Google, you tube - something! But please, don't think a margarita only ice and sweet and sour mix!! Our waitress was young and still has much to learn. So the drinks were a bust but the food was good. I ordered the lunch quesadilla. It was very good. It came out quickly and was hot and tasty. The chips and salsa were good. I always get late night cravings for Mexican food. Monte De Rey did not let me down. I ordered this dish via DoorDash and anytime my food meets or exceeds expectations through delivery, I feel that the restaurant deserves a golden star. Presentation, freshness, and taste were still in tact! This dish had all my faves from the rice, to the beans, to the pico, the homemade corn tortilla and freshly dropped tortilla chips. Been here several times but never felt the need to review it. Nothing stood out. Tonight we wanted Mexican and something close. We decided to try them again. We were seated promptly and served chips and salsa which were pretty good. We ordered quesabirrias and the #9 combo. Both dishes were very good. It's what you would expect at a typical Mexican restaurant. The interior is rather large. They are able to seat large parties. Decor is colorful and the lighting is bright. We just had a wonderful lunch on the patio at Monte De Rey in Kernersville. Fermin was so nice and attentive. He asked if I wanted a jumbo margarita and I asked how big it was. He held his hands out to the size of a fish bowl! I went with the medium. The picture proves the size is what most places call a jumbo but their "medium" was only $10.99, it was very good and had a nice kick. The guacamole dip was only $4.49 and elsewhere, the same size runs $6-7.00. We loved it! We traded bites of the California Burrito, with steak tips. It was huge but they call it the lunch size! It was only $9.49. The Coyote Loco came with a fresh mushroom and cheese quesadilla, really good rice and a cheese enchilada with shredded carnitas on top. Fabulous! We had enough to bring home for our dinner. Then he brought us two complimentary sopapillas with whipped cream and fresh strawberry drizzle. Tried this place for the first time. It was good, not great. We had the fajitas for two, there was enough meat for 4 people. Seasoned nicely, a bonus were the 6 shrimp on top. The beans and rice were the normal fare, nothing exciting. Their chips are good the salsa could use some work, it didn't seem like jarred it lacked flavor and texture Atmosphere is VERY mexican our server was great and the food came out sizzling hot (of course). Based on this visit, only have one entree item, we will go back to try some of the other menu items read more

Comes with beef, chicken, pork, and shrimp. Sizzling platter, of course. Hot, flavorful, and enough for four. Comes with beans and rice, salad, and pico. Good value at $20.99. Others in our group had tacos, ACP, the usual Mexican fare. No one complained of sent anything back - which is a good sign. The downfall here is, as in many similar restaurants, most of the servers speak very little English. Makes hard to communicate effectively. Our servers (large group), struggled to keep beverages filled. Food came quickly, served by multiple servers - but no one knew what went where. Try to interrupt a large family conversation to figure out who ordered what. I'm guessing there's a solution, but I'm not in the restaurant business. Instead of bringing a check, (separate) the server handed me a device asking what level tip I wanted to leave. Couldn't see the total nor the itemized list. I asked to see it before I swiped by card. So did everyone else. Could have gone smoother. A bit out of our way, and better choices, closer. We'll return for the next family outing, but not likely 6as a couple. Stopped in for the very first time. This is a BiG Mexican restaurant. Very COLORFUL and vibrantly decorated. The waitress and waiter were very friendly and waited on me right away. Chips and salsa cane out first. The salsa was on the sweet side. It was good, I just prefer a little more savory/spicy. I got to visit Monte De Rey for the first time last night with a friend and the experience was great. The food was very tasty just like any other American Mexican restaurant you go to around the Stokes area; It didn't disappoint :) The staff was very friendly and attentive from the moment we arrive until we left. We ended up leaving after all the other guests had left and the staff was starting to clean. Never once did we feel rushed or unwanted in the restaurant in spite of staying so late. Well, first off this place has lighting like a school cafeteria. The best news is the service is good. That's where it ends. As a fan of Chile Rellenos I always ask if they are of the fried style versus the egg omelet style. The server said yea they are fried. I was anticipating a better than average relleno. Wanted to try this place, waited a couple of weeks for it to get its newness over. However, not the case. Waited 8 minutes to be addressed at our table. Then we ran out of drinks. Wife went to find someone asked them to find our waitress. 10 minutes later we had our food and still no waitress. She went to hostess desk and asked to see the manager. Manager came and said what do you you need I will get it for you. It's as though the waitress disappeared and no one cared. Same happened to the table beside us. Food is very good. Prices are very reasonable. Parking is easier in the back as the gym tends to fill the spaces in the front.

I'm surprised and delighted! Aesthetically, it's what you'd expect from a local Mexican joint. But that's where the expected ends. The food was way better than any similar Mexican I've experienced. Tacos Diabla is 10/10 in flavor, texture, and what seemed to be authentic ingredients. Service is what has me writing this review. At literally NO point did we run out of chips and salsa, and Chris did more than just fill our cups right on time every time. It felt like every need we could have had was met seamlessly. Last detail: we received an awesome little dessert made of tortilla, whipped cream, and some kind of drizzle (syrup? Caramel?). If that's a menu item, I strongly recommend ordering it for the table. Food consumed at the Monte de Rey in Kernersville, at the same table on the same night, made 2 members of our party sick. We went back into the restaurant tonight & talked to the manager about what happened Instead of responding in a courteous manner, the manager quizzed us if we had gotten a doctor's examination to prove that we had stomach issues after consuming food from their kitchen, along with a couple of other questions that were inappropriate as they were pointless & accusatory. He was basically calling me a liar in front of a crowded restaurant. As we calmly answered & refuted each question, it became apparent that he was clinging stubbornly to his goal of denying accountability for their poor food quality. Side note: We have been regular customers since this location opened a few years ago & have eaten there often, sometimes more than once a week & never had a complaint. The food is usually good, but on the night we got sick after eating it, they mixed up the order & the service & cleanliness was slack. We noticed over time that their state inspection score has steadily decreased & they no longer display it publicly. That score is meant to indicate to consumers the cleanliness of the facility. I believe there was some contamination that we were unfortunate enough to have been served up. I finally said that we usually enjoy dining there. The manager sent me away indicating that he didn't need our business anymore anyway. read more

Very good food, drinks, and service! I love the colors and the ambiance of the restaurant coming from me who works at a Mex-American restaurant as well. I always get the tacos and mix them. Their grilled chicken is amazing and salsa is flavorful, not as spicy as i'd like it to be but very good. The Cantaritos are huge and amazing!! That is my go-to drink as well. I love how at the end they give you sopapillas!! Hooray for Monte de Rey! I love a good quesadilla and like to keep it light. I've been comparing several places and Monte's got top honors - slightly. Like small portions? Check. Order from their side menu. Chicken quesadilla, around $3.75. Plenty filling, loads of meat and cheese, cooked on the grill to perfection. Ok ok, so take it a step up and don't miss adding the white queso- great not just for chips, but drizzled on that quesadilla for even more gooey deliciousness. Only drawback here is a small cost more than my entire meal! (But add an order of flour tortillas for dipping - you'll thank me.) They're great at accommodating special dietary requests, and kindly were able to hold onions to make my meal top notch. No questions asked. Meat was fresh and tender. But don't forget chips and salsa, oooh that salsa. Now if they've not done it yet - that's one I'd buy! Bottle it up in a jar and set it out for sale. We couldn't stop eating the chips. It was just one of those hit the spot ones with a touch of heat and thick enough it stayed neatly on the chip. *chef's kiss* Service was prompt, incredibly friendly and on their game. Bright traditional atmosphere, a bit too open, so you lose intimate dining feel, but hardly notice because you're enjoying every bite. Glad to have this so close.
