Yet another small taqueria combined with a Mexican grocery/ meat market, in yet another small worn strip shopping center. My trip there was met with, at best, mixed results. The tacos, 2 Chorizo & 2 Campechano (4 for $8.99)were more than a little disappointing - both meats were over cooked and dry; the Campechano was a strange mixture and lacked the traditional Chicharrones and the beef, whatever cut it was, was anything but tender and flavorful. The Milanese de Pollo ($11.99) was rather nice ( though there is little in the cutlet that shouts Mexican) but if what I received was 1/2 chicken, it was indeed a very small bird. Authentic Mexican at Los Potros in Kernersville was an absolute win this week. Some coworkers and I met up for lunch and we sat down immediately, but it filled up fast after 12:15. Keep that in mind if you come for lunch. We were given a two sided menu (English and Spanish) and there were specials written on a menu board by the kitchen. I ordered the carnitas torta and it was one of the best I've ever had! I split with my friend who ordered the carne asada tacos and the caldo de pollo rojo (red chicken soup). It was all amazing! Big portions and great prices. This place is nothing to look at on the inside, but let the food speak for itself! I can't wait to go back and try another one of their daily specials. Stopped in on a Tuesday to pickup some tacos to go. My goal is to try all the local authentic taquerias in Kernersville during October. This was my second location. I got the carne asada, carnitas, and one chorizo tacos. Also picked up some chips and their salsa. Their tacos were delicious. The chips from a local bakery were a bit thick and hard but overall not bad. I guess I'm used to thin Tostados. The red salsa was very spicy. Beware if you don't like heat. I enjoyed it. Stopped in to Los Porto's on Cinco de Mayo to get some take out tacos and found not only great tacos but a great meat market to try next weekend. The place has a private parking lot that is shared with some additional businesses in the strip mall. The taqueria has your typical grocery store with a small seating area for eating inside. I called our order in and was able to pickup at the checkout counter. I walked to the preparation area to watch the ladies making tacos and fresh tortillas. The meat market is located adjacent to the prep area and has a great selection of seasoned meats and other favorites. I quickly paid for the tacos and headed home with our selections. We ordered carne asada, chicken, and chorizo tacos. The street tacos were reminiscent of the ones we used to get in South Texas and Arizona. They had fresh tortillas and were loaded with meat,cilantro, and onions. A grilled jalapeño came with them as did cucumber slices and salsa rojo and salsa verde. The meats were very well seasoned but the carne asada had a little too much cartilage in some of the tacos. The star of the show was the chorizo. It was well seasoned and had just the right amount of heat. Definitely a new place for our street taco fix. If you are ever in need of a quick take home meal and in the Kernersville area, this is the place to hit. read more

Anytime a place is good, I make sure to stop back for an encore. That was the case here at Los Potros where you get authentic Mexican food. I stopped in here before my afternoon work shift, and nearly put myself into a food coma! I got the lunch platter with steak as my meat of choice. It came with a small salad, rice, refried beans, and tortillas. I also have a love for their tacos so I got 2 chicken tacos. Everything was delicious as usual. The tacos tasted so fresh that it had me thinking to just get 8 of these bad boys next time and all it a day. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and the cilantros really set them apart for other places. The platter was very good as well. The steak was very well seasoned, and the rice was very flavorful as well. I like how it's mixed with green beans, Lima beans, and corn too. The refried beans had melted cheese on top which did nothing, but help me eat it even faster haha! I washed it all down with papaya juice that was really good as I recommend trying their fruit juices for a beverage instead of a typical soft drink. Having lived in So FL for 30 years, this cringa is not put off by establishments where no one speaks English & you have to point, gesture & wing it to communicate. Which is a good thing, because that's how I get by at Los Potros! I love the food here. Bear in mind - they only have a few rundown booths & chairs (not dirty - just not "purty.") They have several choices of $5.00 lunches. For that $5.00, I often get their taco plate, which comes with 4 tacos, & grilled scallions & peppers. These are not your run-of-the-mill tacos. They are soft corn tortillas, with grilled chicken or beef, chopped up. I like everything on them - lettuce, cheese - not cheddar, its queso blanco ( white cheese,) chopped up cucumber & tomato, & pico de gallo. They are PHENOMENAL. I have tried other items on their lunch menu, all good, but the tacos are the best. I am now a frequent customer of their meat/butcher dept. I am not at all put off by the whole, raw pig I often watch them butcher as I order my meat. I have them slice me VERY THIN pieces of sirloin off of the "bolo" to make Pan con Bistec (Cuban Steak Sandwiches, Cuban bread & potato sticks can be found at Lowes, if you are lucky.) I also frequently buy Skirt Steak here. For $4.00/lb, you can't beat it. On Sat & Sun, you can also buy hot meat by the pound - roast pork & beef - it is truly delicious, and inexpensive. Outstanding spot for some real deal authentic Mexican food, the Mexican tacos made with homemade corn tortillas are fantastic, everything is fresh and homemade, all the other items I see folks ordering look awesome as well. This is a little Mexican grocery store with a butchers counter and a grill. They have a limited seating arrangement, maybe 4 cafeteria style booths along the wall and a couple of folding tables with folding metal chairs just in front of the grill and butchers counter, I get my orders to go when I visit. Everyone in here is speaking Spanish including the customers, I'm usually the only non Hispanic person in the place when I've stopped in. I decided to check out Los Potros Taqueria after reading some rave reviews and called in a take-out order this evening. I was suspicious when a very giggly and highly distracted young lady took my order. I asked for a #4 and she said that she didn't have a menu (!!??!!). I heard many people in the background and figured I must have the right place. I told her that I wanted an order of (4) Campechano tacos (beef & chorizo) which I've never heard of before. She repeated the order back to me and then spoke it to someone in the kitchen. All good so far! Anyway, the Pollo tacos are very good. I hope whoever got the Campechano tacos enjoyed them! Those litany of other Mexican places with Special #892, Speedy Gonzales, etc... all for $3.99 with table service, chips and salsa made from the freshest canned tomatoes short money can buy don't actually serve real Mexican food. That stuff people, you can't even buy it in Mexico! Try the steak tacos, they're great! The sandwiches (tortas en espanol) are equally awesome. I'm not a huge fan of their sopes or huaraches(means sandals). They're deep fried... In my opinion, I like sopes lightly pan fried. This and the lack of seating, which is due to local regs, are the only reasons why I didn't give it 5 stars. Word to the wise, ASK them what they have that day that's NOT on the menu. Often they'll have a plate dinner, or a soup of some sort. I had once there, this green pazole made with chicken that was the best soup I've ever tasted, EVER! Also had a bowl of Charro Beans once that were absolutely out of this world! These are the beans in the light tomato sauce with chorizo, cilantro, onions, garlic, bacon, bits of ham, bits of hot dogs (really), green chilies, and who knows what else. If they have them, get them. You will not be sorry nor will you be able to look at those blobs of whipped pintos and lard at most of the Mexican Junk Food restaurants in the area. Give Los Potros a try. Put aside any preconception of what you think is Mexican food, look beyond the fact that the place is basically a Mexican convenience store/ butcher shop/ satellite tv dealer. Don't be put off by the sketchy grocery strip center, and don't worry if your espanol is less than habla. This is where the real Mexicans eat, but they feed gringos, too. My son and I ate here and we both became ill. Although we didn't even finish our food, about two bites into it we knew something was off. The rice was hard and not completely cooked, the beans had a strange concoction of cheese and "something" on top and the the tacos had chewy, hard meat which was unsuccessfully disguised with soggy onions and hoards of cilantro. My son has been sick for two days now and has been vomiting ever since. I'm considering a lawsuit and I am warning anyone I come in contact with not to eat anything from this place. The tables and floors are dirty, the people are not friendly and there is a "meat market" just a few feet away from the dining area which is suspect at best. Took my mother and I out to lunch to Los Potros because I had received a fantastic recommendation from a friend. We got there and were put off by the environment, but it's easy to get past that. Once we got our food, we noticed it just didn't look right, but decided to go ahead and give it a try. We both ate about half of our 2 tacos each and knew we both hated it. I noticed meat being cut very close to where everything else was going on in the kitchen. An employee with gloves on that had been touching raw meat went to the counter, started texting and went back to cutting meat. While we probably don't have food poisoning, we both feel overall ill.
