Wow!!! They had a spinach brie soup that was absolutely marvelous! I ordered snapper and the snapper steaks were huge and there was 3 of them!! It came with some good rice and asparagus spears. I couldn't eat the rest of the snapper because I was saving room for (drum roll please) German chocolate cake!!! Mmmmmm, cake!!! This is great place. We did take out tonight from Monte Vista Inn and it couldn't have been easier. Tell them the time you would like to pick up your food and simply drive up to the back door. You don't even need to get out of your truck. Service was excellent. The food was absolutely amazing. My wife got the scampi and I got the raviolis. We highly recommend both. Even their bread and butter was amazing. For desert we got the coconut cream pie and key lime cheesecake. Both excellent. We also got the calamari appetizer which was good as well. Portions are very generous. Overall we highly recommend eating here even with the Covid restrictions of take out only. They have it down and make it super easy. I'm updating my review since my last one was during the Covid shut down and we just ate at the Monte Vista on Friday night. It was great. We sat in the bar and had the best time. We had drinks, lobster cakes, warm bread, salads and I had the Philly cheese steak and my husband had the a steak special- crab topped filet with béarnaise sauce. And of course dessert! It was so good even the bartenders came over to ask us about the dessert. We recommended the Monte vista the next day to a young couple looking for a nice place for a date. read more

Food is good, but they are charging a **25% "Service Fee"** for take-out orders without any forewarning. I had two dishes, ~$22 each, so my total before tax was ~$44. The "service fee" was almost $12. When I showed up to pick-up my order, "Brittany"(?) showed me the receipt; then took my card and ran it before I could ask what was this $11.xx "Service Fee". She said "it's a fee the computer adds automatically on take-out orders. It's to cover the takeout paper plates and stuff".... Wondering why any mention of this "Service Fee" can't be found anywhere on their menu, website, Facebook. They never mention it when you call in to place an order... Zero stars! They show you specials on there whiteboard, which they know they are out of. Unless you like waiting 1hr 1/2 for your food in a non busy restaurant, don't come here. Especially beware that you will get a phone call if they believe your tip was not satisfactory and be told to take them "off your radar". By far the best experience at a restaurant I can remember! On our way through Northern California we stopped at the Monte Vista Inn for dinner and were so pleasantly surprised. The entire restaurant was decorated beautifully for fall and apparently they go all out for the holidays. The service was excellent as well as the food. When you are seated they serve you freshly baked bread with honey butter. If their special is fish and chips when you go I highly recommend it. Also, don't forget to have a slice of homemade pie! Was just at the restaurant and watched the owner uses hand to strain the water out of icewater glasses back into a pitcher.. then pour tea into the same glasses and serve them to a table...also left pitcher out to serve other customer the water...the waiter watch the whole thing and serve the tea. read more

Monte Vista's take away service is awesome! The staff comes out quickly to bring your order. They post their daily menu on their Facebook page as they change their specials daily. We usually call in our order so the wait time is only a couple of minutes. Staff always wear masks, and so do we. We're looking forward to them safely re-opening them dining room, but we are happy to get take away until then. read more

Can't beat this place for very good food, hospitality, and warm ambience. Family owned and operated, this is where good memories are made. I couldn't recommend it more. When you're doing a 34 hour reset and you can't stand anymore bad truck stop food. Wife and I hoofed it across the interstate from the truck stop to experience this place. Had a couple drinks at the bar (opens at 3p) while waiting for the dining room to be ready (opens at 5p) and the drinks were great. Cool older guys at the bar. Very friendly, like everyone around here. Got seated at our table by Andrew and Celeste and they both worked hard to make our meal a great one. I had the cold peel n eat prawns to start, and teriyaki prime rib. Salads preceded the entree with some amazing fresh bread. My spicy blue cheese dressing was a bold take on an old standard. Both were excellent. Wife and I traded carbs. She got my potatoes and I got her rice. She got NY strip with breaded prawns. A floret of cauliflower and a slightly larger one of broccoli were included in both meals and they were steamed just right. As if this meal couldn't be more awe inspiring, what with attractive, attentive and gregarious wait staff, bolstered by amazing food, it was then time for dessert. I am a fairly articulate guy, but the appropriate adjective escapes me to describe how delicious these desserts were. Celeste brought out a tray and described each of the 7 items plus a few not on the tray! To make it even better, the option to accompany any of these with homemade vanilla or macadamia nut ice cream! Needless to say, I forgot all about my diet. We left there fat, full, happy and half in the bag. Zero stars. ZERO! We had just spent the most amazing family day at Donner Lake and wanted to end it with a great meal before driving two hours to home. We checked in and we're told a ten minute wait which is not unusual for my large family. Tonight we were only 7 with the grandbaby. We sat in their waiting area by the fireplace. We were genuinely excited to try eating here. The place reeked of history and was so quaint except the decor didn't match well (rustic log cabin-island style decor) One of the girls (minor) went to the bathroom and came back to sit. A woman, who could barely stand, came and stood and glared at her and then started pointing her finger speaking with anger and barely controlled hatred. I was confused/taken aback. She then said "knock it off" I still was confused as she started to yell at my child about banging on the door of the restroom. My daughter was trying to explain, not rudely(proud of her composure!) that there were other ladies in line who had knocked before she did and she only knocked once as the sign on the ladies room said "door in wonky-please knock first. She told her to shut up it wasn't funny. She sauntered off into the eating area and my child was left feeling assaulted and visibly shaken. You're like 65? How do you get off speaking to a child directly like this?? I was pissed after I spoke to my daughter about the details of what had transpired. As I was telling her how proud I was of how she handled this woman and that I was sorry she did that the woman came back and tried to engage with her again. This time it was mommas turn. How dare she! We exchanged words and I told her to act her age and how dare she assault a child not once but twice and it was time for her drunk ass to leave us alone. She eventually sauntered back into the bar where her drunk disabled husband was sitting. All this with her little dog under her arm? even had her dog bed with her ?! Well she was a drunk entitled woman and felt she could do this openly in this restaurant I knew she must be a regular/local here. Which is starting to speak volume of the type of place this truly is. Another woman came to speak to us asking if we were ok and how she thinks she should not have done this. She was the other woman that had knocked for herself and her young daughters as well. ( also caucasian) We thanked her for her kindness. We then started really paying attention then to our surroundings. Other couples whispering/ downturning their noses at us.? Why because we wouldnt allow this type of behavior and we're upset? (also caucasian in fact the entire place was Caucasian) My daughter's husband went to speak to the hostess/owner and was told laughingly "she's just old and I think she's leaving." I'm sorry no, she went to sit in your bar?' Absolutely NO remorse for what had just happened to our family. I decided we were leaving as some of my family lost their appetite and we were upset. Told the hostess and she was like "are you sure?" I said "Absolutely! We do not feel safe or comfortable and we will not be spending our money here for this type of treatment/service." NOTE: we are racially blended family. I'm Caucasian Husband is Filipino/Spanish. My son in law is Peruvian. My grandbaby looks like Moana in the flesh. This unfortunately is not the first time we've realized we stood out. To top it all off, this woman and her husband came up to us in the parking lot about how we "lacked class" I stopped and turned and said to them.." Funny how you walk talking about yourselves, Having no class...you're absolutely right! You should know better as old as you are! Behaving so poorly!" This woman turned and started towards me calling me a bitch and how dare we treat her this way"...?!? I turned more towards her protecting my girls and said ..."You will never be more than what you are now. Trashy alcoholics who have nothing better to do than come down to this establishment and drink til drunk and see nothing wrong with your behavior!" Told them "why don't you get another drink before you go, not sure if you've had enough really" They get right into their car. This is a HUGE fault of this establishment. Obviously no responsibility for allowing this rude behavior nor for creating a dangerous situation not only in their restaurant, their parking lot, as well as the roads along this couples way home. At what point do you cut them off? Zero responsibility for creating drunk driving situations. Here is her picture in case she kills someone. Yelp really needs to let you give Zero stars. We were out of town people coming from truckee trying to get away from the crowds and saw the reviews and thought this might be a good place. We were SO WRONG. We go in and we go use the restroom. My 14 year old sister goes and KNOCKS on the bathroom door because their sign says "Lock is janky please knock first" and this old vicious lady that's SUPER drunk comes out and starts yelling at my sister. Saying knock it off!!! Then walks away, and comes back and starts harassing her EVEN MORE. I was pissed. I talked to the hostess which I am pretty sure was the manager or owner of the place because when I pointed this women out she laughed and said "Oh you have to understand she's old" WTF? Is that an excuse for you to be disrespectful?! To a minor? No. Not okay at all. The drunk was obviously a local and regular because not only did she have her dog in that restaurant she had a whole ass bed with her too. So we decided we weren't going to give our money or business to this establishment that doesn't do anything but laugh when an old women decides to get in a child's face. As we're walking out of course here comes this drunk women and she harasses us AGAIN in the parking lot so we decided to take a picture of her getting in her car about to drive after obviously being drunk. I am truly shocked on how low the rating is! I feel an obligation to boost this place up! I really really like this place! I have a been a few times with a large group of family and have always enjoyed it. Makes me feel like we are in the middle of the woods in a nice cozy cabin with a huge wood burning fireplace. This is a true family run restaurant. The decorations are over the top in a good way. Try to visit this place on a trip up to Tahoe and make reservations as it can get crowded! They have themed holiday napkins which make me smile and live music. I think a lot of local people hang out here since there isn't much else in the area. The food is a little on the pricey side, but its homemade and comforting. Big portions and great service! read more

My boyfriend and I went to the Monte Vista Inn for our anniversary dinner...and we will definitely be going back! They don't start serving dinner until 5pm, so we went to the bar area and ordered drinks with some of the locals! Then we got the most delicious meal I have had in awhile. Calamari appetizer, potato-bacon-cheese soup, 14-oz rib eye steaks and a mocha pie for dessert! The waitresses were very friendly, kept our drinks filled and they worked together to provide excellent service. We stopped here on the way back from Tahoe for dinner. We had a rough start because it took us a long time to get seated, but I truly think it was a fluke. Apparently they had just been hit with a rush, and at least one employee had called in sick. We loitered around the bar and tried to determine what the décor theme would be called (we went with Tiki Christmas Mountain Cabin, by the way) while we waited. Once we were seated, no complaints! The service was super friendly, the menu was interesting without being too much to process, and the food was freaking amazing. Everyone was stuffed and happy with their meals, and though it was pricey, it was totally worth it. They actually know how to cook a steak! We are headed back to Tahoe in a couple weeks and plan to stop by on the way back through the area. read more

It was the first time to have dinner here. I was here last week and brought my wife ----and 2 friends. Our orders: 1 Prime Rib, 1 steak sandwich, and 2 bbq pulled pork sandwiches. Everyone seemed happy with their choices. I had the Prime Rib, but the steak sandwich looked pretty good to me. --- also I ordered wasabe fries with furakake- it was good (I'm sure it's a Hawaiian influence- read on...) This is a nice little spot on the way to the sierras. This is a bit of a toughie. I wasn't in the mood to eat in a dive bar, and as I was never directed towards a table in the dining room, that's what ended up happening. Perhaps my confusion, who knows. I've so far only been the one time. Pluses: the obviously senior (due to competency, not age) bartender was both super kind straight away and attentive to both new me and the many regulars, some of whom seemed to have a lot going on (it's not eavesdropping if you have to actually WORK to block it out). She was a total pro. Brenda? She knows who she is. I didn't write her name down and I was very low blood sugar on arrival. But I appreciate you, girl! This food snob ordered the chicken marsala due to some math about easy wins and eliminating seafood (in the mountains) and steak (at least for the first visit). HEAR YE: my meal was VERY tasty. Yes, I felt painfully sober and awkward eating in the bar. And like Betty Draper eating that dish but damn if I didn't eat every morsel. The rice was oddly tasty? Good one. Minuses: The barbacks or whatever were hilariously not really on top of it. I got my salad without a fork. My dressing didn't come on the side, who really cares? A young lass looked me deeply in my eyes and proclaimed, "She told me your order but I was totally not listening!" and then complimented my necklace. It was really just sweet and delightful. But you know, if you're not dining solo, multiply such mix-ups by the X of how many you travel with. I do recall thinking: this is the best side salad I've ever had! It's unfortunate that management supports disrespectful waitstaff and almost encourages it. After 1.5 hours without food, a condescending waiter, and being shoved at the back of the restaurant next to a very nice part of 15 we determined we had enough. The nice family next to us were very kind but it was just to loud. I was then forced to pay 175 dollars to drive my dinner 1 hour home. I was given no apology, no other options just a rude manager. She then allowed the condescending rude waiter to bring our food to us while yelling as loud as possible , Merry Christmas all while dangiling the food in the air. My parents are elderly and did nothing to deserve this treatment. It's sad as the food and ambience are amazing. Each of my last five visits has been an increasingly worst visit. COZY!! My daughter and I came for dinner the weekend we moved here. I had the Chicken Marsala. It was good, but wouldn't get it again. The sauce was too runny and lacked flavor. When we bought a house in the area, the sellers brought us here saying it was their favorite local restaurant. It was a nice place. The ribs were good, but not 'the best'. The seafood pasta and the blue cheese salad were wonderful. The ambiance was nice and the waitstaff did a great job. Then, after moving here, this was the first place we took our visiting family. Other than the teriyaki prime rib (was wondering if the teriyaki was masking older meat on Monday from Friday?) which was just "ok" everything else was fantastic. The rib-eyes, flank steak, pasta, and "mixed grill" (chicken, ribs, sausage) were all moist and tasty. The mashed potatoes were decadent and amazingly good. Price-wise, I think it was pretty fair. Most things were $18-$30 (ex: the mixed grill with salad was $25) except for the following... They were happy to give us separate checks, but we all thought it a little tacky that they added a mandatory 20% tip for doing so. The thing that really annoyed me though was that they charged $6 (plus tax and tip on that $6 - so really $8) for a split plate. 2 or 3 I could understand, but 6 is really pushing it. My wife and I are not big eaters, and splitting a plate and maybe saving room for an appetizer or dessert is a common thing for us - rarely are we charged extra for it, and never $6... especially since we didn't ask (or expect) them to split it. We would come here frequently if they didn't do that. So our single $25 meal, this time without any drinks, appetizers, or dessert, produced a $40 bill. Yikes.
