There is nothing fancy about the donuts here, but as far as cheap basic donuts go, the donuts here are LITERALLY the best I've had, and I've had a lot of great donuts from a lot of places. Are they better than the donuts at, say, Blue Star? No, clearly not, but they're also $1.10. That's like asking whether In-n-out burgers are better than some wacky fancy $20 burger made from dry-aged beef with truffle aioli and junk - clearly not, but they also just aren't the same product. In their category (basic cheap donuts), I can't think of a single other donut place I've been to that compares. I tried an old fashioned (excellent). and a French donut (mindblowingly good). I didn't know I could be that excited about a simple donut, but the crullers there (I just learned that's what they were called) are basically perfection, for like a dollar. We went here for breakfast on Thursday on a business trip a couple weeks ago, and then went back for breakfast again on Friday, and if I'm ever back in Monterey during breakfast, I don't think I'd consider going anywhere else. I didn't end up trying any of their sandwiches, because the donuts were just too dang good, but my coworkers tried a couple of them, and indicated that they were also great. One particularly raved about the lox. I'm sure it was great, I just couldn't justify a $6 breakfast (still pretty inexpensive), when I could get such a great donut for $1.10. ;) I did get a coffee the first day, and yeah, same theme as the donuts - nothing fancy, but pretty good coffee considering it was $1.60. I especially loved that the coffee was self-serve and they had several kinds, so you could mix them together to get the right blend (I got a cup of half French vanilla, half dark roast, and it was much tastier than either of those would have been by themselves). My only complaint there was that their coffee is waaaay too hot - I had to wait like 20 minutes before it was a drinkable temperature. read more

Breakfast is decent here, I usually stop by after gym, get a quick bite before heading into work. Being in the service industry previously I always tip, most times I feel it's not well deserved however still leave tip and tip well. Owner is lacking simple customer service skills, waiting in line patiently as she is in back preparing something I assume for the day. A lady walks in with a dog as I'm waiting owner comes to front from back and goes directly to young lady and begins to service her. I've come here a couple of times to get donuts and I would always get a maple bacon donut. They would cook the bacon on the side and just put it on top. Very simple. Now they say they don't do that anymore they still have the ingredients they just won't make it. I am very disappointed and will not be returning. read more

I've only ordered Monterey Donuts through DoorDash but every time I have, the donuts have arrived quickly and have even been warm! Nothing like a warm, fresh donut on a lazy Saturday morning. Great place for fresh donuts. We get them about every other week and have never been disappointed. Raised donuts are light and fluffy and cake donuts have always been moist. Great selection of classic flavors with none of them overly sweet. The only ding is that under new ownership there seems to be more of a push for sandwiches and boba (which slows things down a lot) and many of the specialty donuts are gone. I used to love their Green Tea and Ube donuts. The Red Velvet was pretty good. These were all amazing cake donuts. They do have a small selection of topped donuts each day. I have seen Maple bacon, cereal and Oreo topped ones, but never tried them. Way better than chain brands like Dunkin' (which sadly many locations no longer make their own donuts but have them delivered) and Krispy Kreme which as a mature adult I now find way too sweet with everything glazed before more toppings are added (KK glaze is just too thick and sweet for me now). read more

Went here around 11am and the maple bars were mostly picked over, so I ended up getting the last ones there, which is unfortunate for the customers behind us- they were good! Yikes, I really want to rate this place higher because the staff are so darn friendly it hurts. But when you basically only sell two things - coffee and doughnuts -- and neither is particularly edible on a fairly consistent basis, then it just can't rate three stars. I even debated about whether to give it the second star but sincerity and pleasantness get you at least that. Coffee consistently burnt (and tepid) and the doughnuts are swimming in oil and/or stale much of the time. Maybe I come in at the wrong time of the day or something, but I just don't think they have their food / baking management down right. In any event, after the last glob of grease and brown crayon water, I am no longer even going to go on an emergency-basis. There's a paucity of good donut shacks around town -- basically there's the fun-and-decent Red's, this place, and nothing else -- so I can see why some folks may be tempted to rate this place reasonably, but it's just not Donut Standard. OMG, I've used to work for the 49ers at Levi's stadium and Fridays were Stan's donut day . They would order 5 dozens every Friday. Stan's is the icon donut store located in Santa Clara. Well now I work at Monterey Airport and I was told Monterey Donuts and Red's donuts are the best in the area, with Monterey Donuts with the upper edge. Well I had both and my vote goes totally to Monterey donuts beats Stan's and Red's! Even now beats my Krispy Kreme's which when fresh is the best but I think MD probably even better than KK.
