Comfy table and chair with wonderful AC. We ordered two sopes and Quesabirria tacos. They were both very tasty. We both had Agua frescas to wash down our lunch - Pina(Pineapple) and Horchata. They were so good and big. The restroom is in the back outside around the corner but it is fine and clean. Def a good spot to stop at while in the Plant City Area. We stopped in on Wednesday around 1:00 p.m. for a late lunch with a party of 10. The restaurant appeared a bit untidy, and service was slower than we expected, especially given the time of day. Most of our group is from Texas, so we were initially surprised that chips and salsa weren't served upon seating, which is something we're accustomed to back home. In hindsight, we may have been expecting more of a Tex-Mex experience. A few of us were also looking forward to margaritas with lunch but later realized that alcohol isn't offered. When our meals arrived, they were brought out a few plates at a time. Unfortunately, by the time the last dishes were served, some at the table had already finished eating. We ordered guacamole and chips as an appetizer; I personally found the guacamole to have a very strong lime flavor, though others in our group didn't find it as noticeable. The food itself, however, was very flavorful. Several of us ordered burritos, and they were a standout -- definitely something we would recommend. There was one mix-up where a burrito ordered with chicken was served with ground beef, but overall the flavors were excellent. Portions were on the smaller side, but well-prepared and satisfying. One additional note: several in our party ordered water, and about half were charged for bottled water while others received tap, which caused a bit of confusion. I was shocked at $3.90 per taco but assumed it was bigger than your average or more meat or possibly better meat. NOTHING AT ALL. Small tortilla, normal meat, normal fat, not a good seasoning, you have to add onion and cilantro yourself (course chopped). I even let the Senor Know my thoughts and said "I'll let my boss know." Fancy Gourmet tacos with an avocado slice for $4-5 each I understand but this was the basic taco. I was disgusted at what I got as I didnt get what I paid for. $17 for 4 tacos (no drink) is out of my budget for a quick lunch and on my last taco I found a 1" long hair :(. I buzz cut weekly so it wasn't mine. The lady cooking did not wear a hair net when she took the tray out. Zero decor, and pretty expensive for the whole experience. $20.00+ for 3 small enchiladas and a bottle of water. It must have been an off day because I have been there a couple of times during the last three years and whether I order to-go or dine-in the food comes out quickly. Service is good. So delicious!! I'm not well versed in authenticity with Mexican food, but I will say this places is awesome! We have driven by this little corner place several times and wondered about it so we finally took the plunge. This is a small location with its own parking lot. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu is in Spanish/English and the people who work there are super sweet. I ordered a burrito supreme and asked if it had lettuce, sour cream - the usual 'supreme' stuff. Well it doesn't, and it seemed like total blasphemy to the waitress, hahaha. It did however, have rice, beans, cheese, and pica de gallo (sp?) It was awesome. My husband got a dinner plate with rice, refried beans, and pork carnitas. He said they were the best beans he's had in a long time! They have a few kid style drinks on the menu, the Spanish sodas, the piña drink, and a hibiscus tea lemonade that is yummy. However the drinks very quickly increase your bill. We went from $33 in food to a $55 bill with drinks and tax so keep that in mind. We will definitely come back here again! read more

I happened to stop in to try them out! I loved the food and staff was very friendly and helped me with any questions I had. I loved the Al pastor sopes and the tacos. They have a little bar where you get your own sauces and cilantro and onion and many more things to add in your plate as a topping. I will return when I'm up in the area as I live in St Petersburg. Ordered the two taco combo(carne asada and barbacoa taco) that comes with rice and beans. Food was delicious and definitely authentic mexican food. Homemade tortillas and amazing tamarindo. They also have an area so you can serve the sauces and toppings for your tacos. My only issue was the cleanliness of this restaurant. I would recommend you take out instead of eating there. Monterrey Taqueria (Tacqueria Monterrey) is muy authentico! My husband had the carne asada burrito complete with beans and rice; I had a couple of pollo tacos and one carne asada. We came here on the way to Tampa because of the Yelp reviews. We order a small cheese quesadilla, carne asada tostada, piña agua fresco, y tacos: 2 chorizo, 2 lengua, 2 shrimp, 2 al pastor. All the food was good. The al pastor was amazing! Another yelper posted he always gets it, so we were glad to have tried it. We ended up ordering 2 more al pastor tacos and another cheese quesadilla for the kids. The corn tortillas tasted freshly made. The tostada had a nice crunch and was yummy. They have a salsa and condiments bar to dress your tacos and such. It had 6 different salsas available. The guy at the counter was nice and friendly. This isn't your fancy 5-star review. This is a 5-star review for getting exactly what you want from a dive place in Nowheresville. We go to the Strawberry Festival every year. This part of FL is the the most Mexican place I've ever been in FL. Thus there are a ton of Mexican restaurants. I've wanted to try one each year, but usually by the time we leave everything is closed or we're just stupid tired and want to get home to Orlando. This year was different. We wrapped up our day pretty early and I fired up Yelp to pick a place for tacos. This place is a hole-in-the-wall. No joke. It was clean and cool inside. The food was super flavorful and exactly what we wanted. They had some toppings on a little bar (proper temps!) and everything was prepared fast and fresh! We also didn't spend a lot of money. Hello old friend! This place is a dive, and I mean that in the best possible way. I've been longing for Taqueria Monterrey ever since they switched the Fletcher location to a Taco Bus. When I told my wife the Plant City location was still there we knew it was time for a little weekend side trip. This location is in an old food mart of sorts and a touch run down, but the food is awesome! My wife ordered one of her favorites the Suizas which are chicken enchiladas with a tasty green sauce and cheese. I opted for a variety of tacos; first being the Carnitas de Puerco. Followed by Chicharron and finished off with my favorite, the Barbacoa! All were extremely flavorful and served simply with a side of grilled onions and jalapeño. But I went to the salsa bar to dress them up with some pickled onions, cilantro, radishes, green sauce and a squeeze of lime. The sauces as already mentioned in another review are a bit hotter than they were at the old Tampa location. Especially the fire roasted salsa, but still very tasty. I'm feeling very good that I finally got my fix on tasty tacos! read more

I was a frequent regular of the now closed Taqueria Monterrey near USF in Tampa. I have missed the salsa bar so much that I decided to drive over to Plant City to see how that location compares. In short the tacos are better but the salsa bar has fewer of the creative varieties and is much hotter. First this location is easy to find. It is one turn off the interstate, drive a couple of miles, then turn and then drive a mile or so. The building is more spartan compared to the USF location as it's clientele is farm workers and working class immigrants. It is clean and the booths are reasonably comfortable. You place your order at the cash register. The lady who took my order was nice and efficient. The food was then delivered to my table. The salsa bar had many of the same salsas from the USF location. It has the same basic red salsa which is, from what I was once told, a mix of red tomatoes and red peppers. The only difference is that it is hotter. In fact, everything on the salsa bar was hotter. The cashier lady had a laugh when I got up to ask for another Mexican Coke b/c it was obvious that I was sweating from the heat of the salsas. They have the onions, radishes, pickled vegetables like the old location but they don't have the peanut salsa and the black chipotle salsa or the other red/green chipotle salsa that I really liked. I had two chicken tacos. These were basic, just chicken, fresh made corn tortilla and sauteed onions. They were great. They were better than any taco that I have had at Taco Bus or even at the closed USF Monterrey location. Often the meat is dried out at those other locations. Here the meat was juicy and flavorful. I will definitely go back to the Plant City Taqueria Monterrey. Now if only I can get Chef Rene to add Peanut Salsa to the salsa bar. read more

Why 3 stars? Because it wasn't really worth the trip. --- --- --- I can thoroughly appreciate a divey, authentic taqueria. Growing up in Houston, I feel that for the surplus of Cuban food here, the Tampa Bay area is grossly lacking solid Mexican cuisine. It's a trade-off, but sometimes I miss my Mexicano comdia. That's how you say that, right? So Taqueria Monterrey. I mentioned that I find divey places oddly charming. However, this one came across a bit more dirty than divey. I have a pretty high tolerance for a hipster level of dirtiness, but I had to perform a sign of the cross before consuming here. And I'm not catholic. So the salsa bar was missing a few ingredients. The empty and mostly empty bowls were, again, pretty grimey looking. As were our tables. The tacos themselves? The flour tortillas were solid. The corn were very meh. I doubt I'll be back, but to play devil advocate, I probably caught them on a bad day, based on the other reviews. read more

The food is good and prices are reasonable but not the best tacos I have had and the service is slow meaning it took a long time to get our appetizers and food and we got both at the same time instead of one first. The tacos don't come with onions or cilantro like they should or even pineapple and I can tell the tortillas are not fresh. To drink I had a Jarito mandarine flavor and. To eat I had three tacos...barbacoa,al pastor and asada,pretty good in taste but not the best. The staff is not bad and speaks English too in case you don't speak Spanish,the bathrooms are outside around the corner and dirty so over all I can't give this business more then three stars.
