Booked this hotel online and because of its location in downtown and pretty good deal on price. I didn't read any of the reviews on yelp before buying it, but on the drive to Spokane from the Puget Sound. My guy and I showed up on Thanksgiving (one of the quietest in the city) and saw the sign outside saying Valet service. I guess we thought that someone was going to meet us outside, but it turns out we're to go in and give them our keys. I suppose its better than being outside in the cold. But needless to say, it was nice and quiet for pre-dinner rush. The second floor had plenty of sitting and relaxing space; and it had a very nice "boutique" character. No televisions or anything in the main room, but I imagine it might get noisy considering all the rooms on the second floor all open to this huge living room space. The experience I had was very quiet (again, this probably had something to do with the holiday). There was a bar with teas and coffees as well. The rooms: very dark, but the lamp lighting helps create a romantic ambiance, and a relaxing one at that. I heard no train noises go by, and the blinds shut light out as much as they could with slivers on the side (good enough for me, especially with a 7am wake up). The bed did have three pillows, but it wasn't a king size bed so the amount of pillows (after reading in the reviews) became more of something we could laugh at. There was wifi provided by the front desk as well. Also, the TV was small and mounted on the wall in front of the bed. The bathrooms had lots of floor space and nice tub, but not a lot of space to put your toiletries. The sink is free standing with a mirror. The one thing that made me really sad is that the hair dryer they provided didn't work. I guess I could have asked them for another, but it was 7am and didn't have much time. At night, the bar connected to the hotel, Scout, was open for dinner and drinks. My guy and I had a nice night enjoying some drinks, talking socializing with the travelers with the billiards and television in the background. All in all, the staff was very friendly and made sure our needs were tended to. I would stay here again. read more

The hotel is right in between the train tracks, where trains run all night, and show venues like Fox Theater, Knitting Factory and Bing Crosby Theater, which all had shows during my Saturday night stay. I had a room on the second floor with windows facing Monroe street so I got to enjoy the cacophony of train and partygoer squeals with street traffic all night. The interior is also quite squeaky and I heard the conversation in the room next to me at 1AM quite clearly along with some constant "floor squeaks" from the room above. I am happy that others are enjoying their stays and probably would've joined them if this visit wasn't for somber family business (which admittedly most likely made me hyper aware of my surroundings). Since the surrounding venues draw lots of attendees, parking was scarce and I was forced to pay $15 for "event rates" at a lot next to the hotel (which completely absorbed the "savings" I had when I booked the hotel a week ago). There is no onsite pub - but there is a restaurant with a small lounge called Scratch that sat about 40 and they were welcoming and nice. All in all - will not be staying at the Montvale Hotel again and would not recommend it to family or friends. read more

The walls are thin and the staff does not accommodate. We arrived today with our 2 year old to check in and not be provided a crib as promised. When our room was right next to the girl who checked in before us with a case of wine and plans to host a bachelorette party, I immediately requested we be moved to another room (for both our sakes -- ours tonight, theirs tomorrow). The woman at the front desk assured me it wouldn't be a problem as they were going out to celebrate, and yet here we are, as if we were in the center of the party for the last hour...hope they don't mind the 6am wake up call. To be clear, this bachelorette party is not to blame. I love a celebration. But I tried to avoid this. It's obviously more important for the hotel to risk having 2 unhappy customers than to accommodate requests. Other than that, the price is right and the decor is cool. I would stay here without my child and join the bachelorette party shenanigans. read more

The Montvale has great potential. Our stay had the good...comfortable bed, decent pillow, clean bathroom; the bad...housekeeping hasn't used the crevice tool on the vacuum in years to edge the carpet where it meets the baseboards, which also needed dusting; and the ugly...the AC is shut off on October 1st even if it's still in the 80's for daytime temps. The evening clerk did her best to accommodate us by bringing us a box fan. The room was 85 degrees at 10 pm but was still 75 degrees at 6am. Not a comfortable night. The morning clerk was very pleasant, took my feedback very well and gave us a price concession. The hotel is charming and will be beautiful when the renovation is complete. But they need to fix the housekeeping issues and AC to get a full 5 star review. read more

The best part was when the elevator opened to my floor ... My dream cabin living room was in front of me.My heart was smiling! I am so glad I found this hidden gem. I have stayed at many places in Spokane and I can't believe I just found this place. I DREAD sleeping in hotels, because of noise, uncomfortable beds, cleanliness, etc..... This was different. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The rooms were so nice, quiet and clean. The beds were SOOO comfortable. The hotel itself is historic and has lots of character. I had the best nights sleep in a long time. I can't wait to stay here again! read more

UPDATE: After clearing up communication issues, all was resolved! I had plans to stay here one night with a friend for a concert. That concert was cancelled at 2pm, and it was supposed to be later that night. Due to the cancellation of the concert, we no longer needed the hotel. Upon calling, I was told since it was not within their 24 hour cancellation policy time, I could not get a credit. I ended up calling back later requesting to speak to the manager, who was out at the time. The girl who was on the phone took a message from me and said the manager would call. No call was ever received. Every time I called the hotel there was a different excuse of why I could not speak to the manager. It should be noted that the concert was cancelled due to bad winter weather and unsafe driving conditions. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Montvale. Its a small boutique hotel that has an upscale feel. I stayed on a Monday evening and the hotel was quiet. I was greeted right away at check in. Although its a small hotel, they provide outstanding accommodations through partners located in the same building. With discounts at the restaurants connected to the hotel as well as free breakfast at their sister hotel just a block away. On the 2nd floor there was free coffee and tea which was lovely for my early departure. There were to go coffee cups which I also really appreciated. The room I stayed in had a walk in shower with lovely blue tile and 2 shower heads. Ask for the Euro queen for this luxury! If you appreciate vintage style and old world charm, without the steep prices at the Davenport, choose The Montvale for your stay in Spokane. It is nicely located in downtown close to restaurants and across the street from a theatre. I stayed for a show at the Spokane Arena and it was a quick 8 minute uber ride away. This is the second time we have stayed at the Montvale, with the first time being approximately two years ago. It is a boutique hotel with an antique ambiance. The room was large enough for a coffee maker and refrigerator, but instead they chose to utilize the space with an overpriced selection of snacks and bottled water. The rooms are very dark, except for when the sun comes up as there are not black-out curtains, only wood shutters that do not close enough to block the light. (We were awake anyways due to the noise.) The mattress and linens were comfortable, but the pillows were lumpy--and there were only three. That seemed like an odd number (pun intended). Do couples fight over the third pillow??? The water pressure was good, but they skimped on the towels, as there were two bath towels, two hand towels, but only one wash cloth. The soap was like washing with a Chicklette. There were two small, skinny shelves in the bathroom. There was no where to put one overnight kit, better yet two. Whomever designed this hotel bathroom must not have ever stayed in a hotel. Boutique style should not mean a lack of basic comforts. The room seemed clean. I dropped a small potato chip on the floor. It was clearly visible in the center of the room (not in a corner). I left it to see if it would be there after the maid service. It was there after the room was cleaned, but it was broken as the maid must have stepped on it. That would mean that the maid did not vacuum the room, or even check the floor. The worst part of the stay was the night noise. There are train tracks within spitting distance, and they blow their horns as they transit the city. The nearby bars empty their glass bottles into the recycling bins in the parking lot below at 1:50am, and the garbage truck empties the dumpster at 3:49am. The freeway is close, so sirens were very audible. We were on the third floor, but the noise was loud enough to wake us. There is also no way to turn off the heat/air conditioning fan that blows right onto the bed. So whether we had one pillow or four, with the night noise and the fan, there was no sleep had during our stay. They have coffee on the second floor in the morning. I got the last cup of burnt and nasty tasting coffee. If a hotel is not going to have coffee service in the room, they should at least serve fresh coffee and maintain the area. The front staff were friendly, but one of them could not tell me where the ice machine was located. The carpets in the common areas are stained, which gives the hotel an grubby feeling. One of the staff members should be ready to open the front door when guests are coming through with luggage. It would also be nice if they offered to take our bags to our room. Since I was traveling on business--and like to sleep--I will not stay here again. If we were in Spokane for pleasure, I doubt we would stay here, either. read more

Two glaring problems: both are brought up in previous reviews, noise and parking. Our room was on the side along Monroe Street and the noise was simply excessive. The parking situation was extremely problematic. Without getting in to detail, it is simply impossible to arrive about 5 pm and just park your car in the area until the next morning. Usually I am the type who has no issue unloading my luggage and parking 1/4 mile away. During my stay I was a little under the weather so this was a huge inconvenience. This would always be the case for anybody who is less mobile than me. Lots of potential charm, but lots of missing details. I hope they are able to get things figured out at some point and make this place work. read more

Additionally in the morning we woke up with the noise of old wood floor another guest walking in another room. So we could not get a quality sleep. I really enjoyed staying at this hotel. Friendly service, great location, and nicely appointed. The staff was quick to bring up towels, as there were none in the room when we checked in. The towels, however, were not what I would consider 'hotel' quality. They were thin and flat. As another reviewer mentioned, there were only 3 pillows on the queen bed. We like pillows so this was disappointing. We valet parked our car for $17. A little pricey, but street parking in downtown Spoakne can be a little sketchy at night, so we bit the bullet. I'll stay here again the next time I need a hotel in downtown Spokane. read more

Desk staff were pleasant and knowledgeable, and the housekeeping staff were also very nice. Location is great, and the ambiance is very desirable. I give this 2 stars because: - The towels were cheap and like sandpaper - Shampoo and lotion were supplies, but not conditioner - I had to ask for extra towels (2 towels were supplied) - The windows are cheap and thin and I could hear EVERYTHING going on outside on the street...EVERYTHING. - I could also hear the people above us walking and talking very clearly, not just their footsteps, but their floors, our ceiling, actually creaked. I realize this is an historic building, but I'm talking LOUD. I will most likely not revisit this hotel, as the Davenport Tower is just down a few blocks and is comparable in price but far superior in amenities. read more

This hotel is so unique and in a great place downtown. The rooms are spacious and clean and very comfortable. I would have given this a 5 star but parking is terrible. I had to park 3 blocks away at their other property due to a show going on in downtown. Plus it was storming out. This is a beautifully restored historic hotel. We loved it and will definitely be back!! I only gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the elevator was out of service, and our mattress was too hard. Otherwise this is a wonderful and unique place to stay. It's very clean with good service and amenities. The common area, I believe they called it the Atrium, is just beautiful. I have to give props to the owners because they did a great job restoring this hotel and making it a nice place to stay in downtown Spokane. The hotel has maintained a classic feel but managed to incorporate some more contemporary touches in it's design. It's comfortable and affordable with a good location. I usually stay at the Davenport Historic Hotel across the street from the Montvale but wanted to try it for a change and it was a good stay. I'm still in love with The Davenport though but if it's full I'll be happy at the the Montvale. read more

We made a reservation for 3 people and upon arrival and check-in the hotel staff informed us we had 1 king size bed. Even though we had made the reservation for and paid for 3 people they said the room with 1 king bed was standard for 3 and a rollout bed would cost $25. They would not give us a rollout bed without charge. When asking to speak with a manager the staff informed us they could email. They said there is no way to contact management on the weekends and they had no power to give us a rollout bed without extra charge. One of us had to sleep on the floor that night because a manager never contacted us and we had no way of contacting them or receiving a refund. read more

This review is not about the hotel itself but about their reservation policy which I'm sure reflects their inflexibility should there be any billing questions. Consider this a BIG fat caution about making reservations here. You better be ABSOLUTELY SURE that you will make it and be aware that their cancellation policy is NOT standard. I made a reservation for my cousin visiting Spokane and gave all the credit card info to take care of the bill myself. I was informed that they had a 48 hour cancellation policy. I said "Fine" and made a mental note that the Montvale Hotel, however charming, doesn't have the standard 24 hour cancellation policy. Today the 14th at 5:52 pm I sent an email cancelling the reservation as the cousin can't make it on the 16th. I also followed up with a phone call at 5:55pm and talked to Christina at the front desk. She insisted that I wasn't within the 48 hour cancellation policy requirement since I had called after 3pm and that's their official cutoff. That also differs from standard hotel cancellation policy which is 6pm. She warned me that I would forfeit the entire night's room charge. I followed up with, "Well, you're very busy this week since I had a hard time booking this date at the beginning of the month; I'm sure you will sell this room and then I will be refunded, right?" Christina responded, "No, that is not our policy. You forfeit the room charge regardless unless the manager approves. I will send her an email and ask her if she will allow this cancellation since you're only past the 3pm by 3 hours. " Needless to say, I have NO desire to ever book the Montvale Hotel again...unless they can be more customer friendly and a little more flexible. The Montvale needs to step up into the modern age and realize that competition in hotels is fierce out there and driving away customers is just about the worst policy for any business let alone a small boutique hotel that doesn't offer many amenities to begin with. Update: I called and left a 2nd message for the manager. She finally returned the call and she let me know they were "making an exception" since I was only a few hours off of the 48 hour cancellation policy. I'm puzzled as to what "Making an exception" for me means: whether other guests would get the same "exception" or I'm getting the "exception" simply because I wrote the one star review and they're hoping I'll adjust to a better review which I've now done. We learned, in the course of our stay at the beautiful-but-horribly-managed Montvale, that the horrible management had an explanation. Two weeks prior to our arrival, the Montvale went bankrupt. The bank, which now owns the hotel, fired all the staff and brought in a management company which, at the time of our visit, was still learning how to operate the hotel in a satisfactory manner. Our room wasn't clean when we arrived; we had to wait half an hour for it to be personally cleaned by the front desk person. The sheets were threadbare and pilled. The thermostat was broken. The TV channels wouldn't change. There were footprints on the floor of our bathroom, even after the cleaning. The next day, we flipped the door hanger to "please make up our room," but it was obvious that no one had been inside once we returned. It's a shame, because the hotel itself is beautiful. Giant skylights over a central lounge area on the second floor make it feel luxurious. The rooms have high ceilings and huge windows. But the current team is set to run it completely into the ground before much longer. read more

Truthfully--I NEVER write reviews, but when an occurrence is this bad I feel that I should-simply to stop other people from having a terrible experience. I checked in at the hotel-upon arrival, I noted that there is not a lounge or bar. There is a restaurant next door and when I asked the girl at the front desk if they serve breakfast she said "i think it's just dinner but I don't know." and that was it! Upon entering my room at 3 PM, I tried for 2 1/2 hours to connect to the internet. I should note that I travel extensively for work, so when I am done my meetings for the day I typically spend 3-4 hours in my hotel room doing follow up work. Not only was there an issue with the internet, but there was a wet spot on my bed, mold on the wall, and a disgusting spot of I don't know what on the floor. Oh and two of my 3 lamps didn't work. But I am an optimist and I NEVER EVER complain. I put it aside and opened the blinds and tried to connect to the internet. When I could not connect I called the front desk. First response "we got complaints about that last night but like I think they fixed it." Umm.. ok. I'll keep trying. Second response, "I mean I guess I can try and reset it." I was patient and asked if there was anywhere else I could go close by to use the internet to do work "You could sit in the lobby." Umm...? The hotel internet isn't working. NOt in the lobby, not in my room, and the girls at the front desk were rude and not even remotely helpful. I advised that i needed to leave and needed a refund. They said no. I ended up on the phone with Expedia for an hour and THEY were kind and understanding and granted me a refund. When I walked downstairs to check out the one girl was on her facebook on her cell phone and the other was playing with her hair sitting in a chair. Absolutely HORRENDOUS experience and I will make sure that I let everyone I know that travels for work out here to stay the heck away!! read more

As others have noted, this place is distinctly vintage, but to my surprise manages to not be stuffy or too precious to live, unlike B&B's I've been to. At least one other reviewer complained about the desk staff. The woman who checked us in wasn't the fastest, but for sure she wasn't high as someone claimed. The computer system seems slow which is likely a factor -- looks like a thin client and probably SaaS hosted offsite. Bear in mind this is a standalone 36 room hotel, not a 500-cell chain conference arcology. The atrium is pretty much awesome on a stick and reminds me of the Winchester house in San Josie. The light is amazing and the portrait photography potential is huge. We're in the/a Presidential suite -- maybe there are two? Huge. We're here because we need two sleeping areas. I got a price of like $112 on hotels.com, astonishing for this space and layout. Someone claims that the nearby Davenport isn't much more, but I saw rates there pushing $300 so I don't get it. The windows are thin because they appear original. Modern dual-paned windows would indeed be quieter and better insulation, but maybe not permitted due to the historic factor? Maybe with time and $ they will be updated. Our room has seven tall windows, I'll estimate replacing then would cost $25k just for this room. There's a strong secured WiFi net that's maybe for staff? The unsecured net that the staff directed me too is weak in our room, to use it I'd have to go over to the entryway. The bathroom is modern and adequate, though cracks in the sink are surprising. Temperature tonight is just fine, so I can't comment on the HVAC situation. The bed seems fine and the couch is fine for sleeping on. The sitting area TV can be powered on via a button on top -- the remote is for the Comcast box. Unusual for a hotel, but hardly worth whining about. The schmancy restaurant on the first floor lists a vegan tomato bisque, but *all* entrees are meat. Why list a soup as vegan without so much as a single entree? We went elsewhere to eat. Parking was $12 in a Diamond lot around the corner. B High ceiling foo. Vintage foo. The WAF here is over the top, the only way the ladies would love it more would be a claw-foot tub. If you need to host a conference or torrent tentacle pr0n look elsewhere, but if you want to delight your GF/wife, it's hard to beat. The downstairs pub is out of business. Perhaps for the best from the noise perspective. Update: windows are in fact dual pane but street noise does come through. read more
