I like the space a lot! It's dark, vintage-y and kind of strange how big it is. There is a long bar with a bunch of stools and some boths available for larger groups. Came here for Abba Night one Saturday and another time for a drink before hitting up Terragram Ballroom. Drinks are cheap, which is my favorite thing about this place. But I had to dock 1 star for the service. Was here the other day and was met by a grouchy bartender behind the bar. The bar wasn't even packed but she obviously refused to serve me and my friend. I tried to make eye contact and tried to do a subtle-and-friendly wave to let her know I was ready to order. But she kept avoiding me! And everyone had already been helped except me....and I heard her tell the other bartender that she didn't like that I was waving at her. Am I missing something here?...is that rude or some unspoken rule at Monty Bar? Well, whatever. Apparently I offended her. Fine, don't take my money. But thank you to the other bartender who did serve me cheap whiskey to help me forget about the trouble. (Judging from other reviews, yep, probably the same girl on Friday nights) Note that it takes forever to order a drink on dance nights like Abba Night. Wondered in here after the Lords of Acid show at the Teragram Ballroom. There was a flyer that said the after party was here. I would've never even knew this place existed because outside it looks small and unassuming, but inside it's super cool! This place is really spacious inside and goes far back. It looks like it was untouched from when it was built (looks 100 years old) and when we went it definitely had a gothic saloon vibe. I would DEFINITELY go back for drinks or for any of the club nights. We found a booth and were chilling there for a bit before we decided to leave and get food. Zero stars. Came here to meet my friend for a drink. The place was ear shattering decibel loud; to the point where I couldn't hear anyone shoulder length. For reggae night it's mildly inappropriate . I asked the DJ politely to turn the music down. It's. There were a total of maybe six people in there, so it's not like I was jamming up a full Saturday night. Also reggae is supposed to be chill not earache levels. The DJ was antagonistic, mocked me and my friend and proceeded to cuss me out. His behavior was unprofessional and demented. After extending my middle finger to him, I promptly left and will never ever consider coming back here again. Even if beer was free, I would NEVER ever come back here even if the zombie apolocypse came and this was the last bar and safe house. Good riddance. 0/5 read more

There's a lot of potential here but it seems wasted. I live in the neighborhood so this is more of a local's view. One of the biggest problems here are the hours. It opens at 8pm most nights. By that time I'm already out somewhere else. And since so many people WFH nowadays, they can be out the door of their apartment at 5:01 p.m. Another issue is lack of food. Maybe they don't have a permit for a kitchen or some stupid LA ordinance, but that really sucks. It was better when Porchetta Republic was open next door and you could bring in sandwiches (sometimes they'd even bring them over for you) but now that that's gone and that Habibi Bites lasted 2 weeks there's really no option except for a taco truck across the street. Lastly, the last time I was in there the draft machine didn't work so it was all bottles. There's literally a liquor store next door that sells bottles of beer. So it's like "should I pay $10 for a bottle of beer to drink in this place or pay $3 to drink it at home and order postmates?" It's a cool place, don't get me wrong. The staff is friendly and the bar itself is big and beautiful with a smoking area out back. But they should consider opening during the day at least, knock a few more dollars off the prices, put on some TV's and figure out some way to serve food. The vibe could change after 8pm -- turn off the TVs, turn on the music, lower the lights, etc. But to have this place closed all day every day seems like a missed opportunity. read more

The pictures do not at all match the vibe of this bar. I was expecting twinkling lights and plants on the wall of a light and airy room. Inside there was a heavy goth vibe. It was dark and dreary and there was a spooky black and white horror movie on display. I was not dressed in the goth style - and felt everyone visible staring at me. I was also the only black person in the room - not sure if that had anything to do with it but judging by precious comments maybe it was a role. I looked online at the description for the bar and there was no mention of it being a goth scene. Aside from that music and style not matching my own - I felt like i was at a costume party and had no idea there was a uniform. I made a pit stop before heading the Teragram Ballroom next door. The dark cavernous bar has plenty of room to bring a group of friends to enjoy a night out on the town. They have a good list of draft beers and the bartenders are friendly with no attitude. The reasonable prices are on par with other bars in the area. read more

This place was not it. The live music was pure metal rock not even that good . After the live music was done they had a dj but even the dj sucked. The service was not great the bartenders seem to be annoyed that they were there and the next day that I went to check my bank account I noticed the bartenders had tipped themselves and extra $10 on each transactions. Saw the bartender with the glasses assaulting a customer. Earlier in the night the same bartender (who I believe is the manager) was being aggressive with his coworker. I came here with a (white) friend and found myself in the uncomfortable position of being asked by said staff how we knew one another etc. while she used the bathroom at the end of the evening. Understanding that they were suspicious of our acquaintance I asked politely to be left alone while I waited for her. Instead of being extended the courtesy of a seat while I waited (after tipping generously) I was asked to wait outside unlike other (white) guests (fact). This is typical prejudice behavior and normally I shake it off and move on but I also think its worth making people aware of these things so they can avoid the same experience. Definitely find somebody here that loves music because there was a live band and I kind of felt I was taken back into the 70s early 80s with some of the dudes outfits highly recommended. My boss and I were in downtown LA for a conference, and went to Plan Check to grab some dinner afterwards. As we left, a disturbed individual started screaming and throwing a fit in the street, so my boss suggested we quickly seek a safe haven. I consulted Yelp for bars within walking distance and found Monty Bar. When we showed up on the other side of the street and viewed the bar from the outside, my boss seriously questioned my recommendation for a safe haven, but we went in anyway, and had a couple of drinks. We really liked this place. This bar has a really fun, vintage lodge vibe, with red leather booths, antlers on the wall, and dim lighting. I witnessed the owner (manager?) (someone unloading liquor from the back of their car at 11pm) and the door guy kick a woman in a tent in front a of a near by business (not theirs). I was waiting in front of the smoke shop two doors down and was startled when two men started yelling. When I peered around the corner I see that they're yelling at a singular tent that is outside of the vacant business in between the smoke shop and them. Then I witness both the men start kicking the tent while saying "we know you're in there" and to each other "she needs to move" so acknowledging it is a woman they are kicking and that she is inside of the tent they are kicking. They did not once try to approach the situation with care or compassion. They assaulted a houseless woman. THEN. She flew her tent, leaving her belongings and the boys seemed to settled down and from there I walk towards them, three white appearing males talking about bob seager like he matters, I wait for ten minutes until I finally pull -manager seeming dude- aside and say "hey can I have a word with you?" I tell him that I can understand that it can be frustrating to know what to do in these situations but that I saw him KNOWINGLY kick a woman and that wasn't ok. He proceeded to get less than an inch away from my face screaming at me I didn't understand and that he kicked her because he had to. "I told her to move and she didn't!" --they gave her like three seconds to even respond-- (also physically hurting anyone is not called for in this situation) The door guy also called me a Karen and told me to leave a yelp review to which I said "Why would I do that, I am literally say this to your face right now?". But after further reflection, it's obvious to me, that both men, with how aggressively they were coming at me and how I literally saw them assault another woman, don't actually care. So I wanna leave this review and I want everyone to know how this bar is treating its neighbors, because our houseless friends are our neighbors. She wasn't doing anything but sleeping. There wasnt a cocktail menu but they will make almost any cocktail you ask for and have a decent selection of beers. Plenty of booths to have a conversation or dance on the dance floor. read more

You'd be hard pressed not to have a good time here. I imagine this place hasn't changed in a while and hopefully never will. Just the right amount of rough-around-the-edges feel, floors and a bar that can take a beating, plenty of dark corners, just the right level of loud music you can still talk up a new friend over, or shout old horror stories of going out in LA in the 00's to an old friend. I really dig this place. Parking can be a little tricky but it's worth the effort. Drinks are cheap, their music on "Sundaze" is my fave, bartenders are nice, and there's plenty of cozy booth seating. Doesn't get too crowded either, unless there's a band on stage. read more

What a killer bar discovery that has yet to be infiltrated by the masses, though it's definitely spacious enough to hold a decent-sized army of solid drinkers. I went to Monty Bar by myself on my way home from Downtown recently because I was passing it for the umpteenth time and figured it was finally my shining moment to stop in. I was imbibing solo for most of the time there (9pm on a Friday), but it definitely got a bit busier towards midnight. I sipped on a Stone IPA ($6) and then another one, and then another one (third time's a charm apparently as the awesome bartender said that one was on her - I think she liked my I'm not afraid to go to a bar by myself mentality), and then I stopped. A DJ (well, two spinning records to be exact) came on board at some point and was well into the swing of things when I left. The place is really spacious, as I mentioned, with high ceilings and width between walls (notice that so many places now are really narrow which makes it difficult to stand and drink a cocktail or to even get a drink?) and large, half shell booths will tall backs. There's even a cool Western door you pass through upon entering. I hear they may have a cocktail menu soon. They're equipped to do it all but at the moment, you have to ask for a specific concoction if you want it. Oh, and they play a movie on the back wall, though it's more background art than entertainment. I enjoyed myself so much I went back the night after. While it may not be in the thick of things or heavily populated, it's a great place to start the evening if you're headed to DTLA. read more

Came here this past Friday for a co-workers last day at work party. I was really surprised, from the outside I was expecting a diveTOTAL bar, you know sketchy and smells like urine? Instead what I got was a very nicely dome dive bar. The inside is all wood, erry'thang, with this lighting that I don't know how to describe, but enjoyed. Theres a few animal head on the wall, a buffalo or bison and a ram? Anyway, not the point but you get the idea. It's a really nice size, not tiny and not huge but nicely sized. After work Friday there was a really diverse group of people. Nice sized bar and attentive staff. There's a huge open floor, a DJ booth and and booths lining the walls almost all the way around. I went to Monty Bar for a private party with free food and drink, so I am pretty sold on the place. It's in a slightly peripheral part of downtown, so parking was easy, and I got a spot right in front. I don't know how crowded the bar gets on a regular night, but I imagine it could get pretty busy without becoming obnoxious. I'll have to come back sometime on my own dime. The space was comfortable and warmly decorated, with gentle lighting and a lot of dark wood and tufted leather. It felt like a pleasant sort of old school saloon, complete with a large bar and swinging doors. Seating was plentiful, both at the bar and in roomy booths along one side of the space. Service was fast, and I had a couple Red Seal Ales. The beer selection was pretty basic, but I enjoyed my drinks. There were also $10 Old Fashioneds and other classic cocktails, which I abstained from as beer and wine were free. I might try a fancier drink next time, but we'll see. I thought the space was cool and pleasant, and the drinking pretty easy. In short, I liked Monty Bar, and I'd be happy to pay my own way on a future visit. read more
