I was helped plenty fine but the second I said I didn't play the guitar I received the nastiest glance. Took me off guard. I tried to salvage the conversation but was met with pure distain. I walked in with a friend to check out if the store did pickup changes for guitars. Monty greeted me as we walked in and is genuinely a pretty cool guy. I noticed the term 'creepy' a lot these reviews with Monty. I have to say that I was in there few years back and had same experience and noticed the creeping on KIDS. He was so rude and weird to the adults but kept running outside to sit with the young kids..being all smiley and giddy and laughing with....however, completely ignoring any adult or their questions as if obsessed to be with the 'KIDS"... If you noticed him looking creepily at your kids THERE IS A GOOD REASON you picked up on this. Read between the lines. If you do not bring a small child in there he is not interested in talking to you. Are you people understanding what Type of person does this? Do not bring kids to this store. I came in to rent a flute. The owner stared awkwardly and seemed bothered by my patronage. When asked about a flute, He said he would have one in a week and would call me when they came in. He never called. I called back and he seemed irritated and said it would be a week or more so I went to Allegro on Bell road and rented a flute that day. I wouldn't return here. Monty is awesome! We originally went in to get replacement violin strings for my son's violin. While we were there we started talking about how he is also learning the bass and found out Monty gives lessons. We signed up and have been getting weekly lessons for about 3-4 months and it has been amazing seeing his progression. My son is high functioning autistic and Monty is amazing with him, they get along famously and he considers him a "bass idol" in his own words. Highly recommend! read more

Signed up just to write this review. The only saving grace is Monty's employees who are very courteous and friendly. I'm a pianist, so I've been buying books from here for years, but I've never actually interacted with Monty, just his employees. I'm about to take up ukelele, but I've already bought the ukulele. I did my research and found an affordable entry-level ukulele and found what strings are recommended for it, so I came in for the strings and to just browse the other ukuleles. Monty came in, and he was friendly when showing me the ukuleles, but then I told him that I already bought one online and I was just looking into some strings and he immediately became caustic upon realizing that he wasn't going to make a sale. He didn't have my brand of strings - he only carries Martin - and I got a lecture about how I shouldn't be so closed-minded about what kind of strings I'm buying. I left, and he sarcastically thanked me for allowing him to help me. I guess I could throw in that I know someone who came here for guitar lessons and complained about Monty's bitterness as well and how she didn't learn anything. I have been going to Monty's since I was in Elementary School (about 20 years), and I am always thrilled with my expereince. This is your typical Locally Owned establishemnt, with Monty working with every customer. It is so nice to walk in to a store and know people working - and better yet, have them know you! Forget the major chains like Guitar Center, etc. this is a real store that has thrived in our community. I only go into the store about twice a year, but there are always local music patrons in for a visit. It is very disappointing that only negative comments are the ones posted here. This is not a 1st-review low rating, but I was compelled by Sarah's comment that "only" negative reviews are posted. My experience is as follows: - It's tucked in the corner of a very busy Safeway plaza, and parking is not convenient at all. I don't mind the walk (it's good exercise). However, if you leave your guitar in the car to get groceries, or vice versa, there's the risk of someone breaking into your car. I usually park behind the plaza. - Yes, some of the employees are courteous, but others aren't. In an age of smartphone guitar tuner apps (most of them not very good) and wanting reliable feedback - no pun intended - on alternative tunings, a little courtesy would go a long way. - Lesson times will occasionally run late. The instructors will occasionally run late, yet I would still be charged regular time. That's not fair. - No acknowledgement that life happens (emergencies happen) and if I have to go to urgent care or there's a family member in the hospital needing my attention and can't make my lesson time, I'm sorry, but that doesn't make me a deadbeat. - Closed on Sundays. That's a huge turn-off for me. All the other guitar places in town are open on Sunday. (Am I mistaken in that presumption?) If I work full-time during the week and Sunday is a day to catch up on practice after church. I have no doubt they lose potential customers who go elsewhere on Sundays and don't know how they can stay competitive with their hours. read more

Literally my least favorite store I've ever been to. I walked in to try out a bass, had over 600 bucks in my pocket but wanted to play the basses a bit before I bought. Most every other music store is perfectly okay with me trying out the instruments. He immediately typecasts me as someone he can't trust and insists on awkwardly watching me play. After only a couple minutes he basically says, "okay, that's enough. You're done." I wasn't abusing the bass, he just thought I wasn't gonna buy. I insist on playing a bit more and he responds "Are you retarded? Did you hear me? Buy or leave." I have a little sister who has a mental disability and he insulted me beyond belief. I have never had such a bad experience in my life. I earn over 150k a year, can easily afford the bass and have played professionally on the side for 12 years. I wanted to try the bass out for longer than just a minute. DO NOT GIVE THIS COMPANY YOUR BUSINESS. UNPROFESSIONAL, OFFENSIVE AND JUST PLAIN MEAN. read more

Monty is the owner operator of the store. He seems a little annoyed if you try to negotiate any of his prices. As in most privately owned music stores his bread and butter seems to be music lessons, instrument repair and sheet music. I love these type of stores. Very intimate with mom and pop type of store feeling. Monty, the owner is there to greet you as you walk in. They offer instrument rentals, lessons as well as all your other music needs. I saw lot of guitars both new and used on the wall and lot of drum sets out on the floor. I still really love this place! I like that its locally owned and operated. Monty is genuinely a great guy whose been keeping his business thriving for many years. I really appreciate the individual customer service I get, like having my favorite picks available or checking into ukulele pick-ups and the offbeat jokel. Monty has fixed my guitars when they were broke and he does a great job! He did not charge me for it and I am super appreciative. He has helped me with my ukulele, also. One of the most uncomfortable experiences we've ever had. Drove 20 miles to check out this place as my friend is interested in getting a new violin. Monty kept questioning us if we were serious or not and said he had a lot of important stuff to do so he would rather us not look at the violins if we weren't serious. After being talked down to for awhile we decided to go to Andrew's Violins instead. Always had great experiences at Andrew's so I should've known better than to try a new business. He also questioned whether we were just waiting for a pizza next door or not lol. Pro tip, if you're a young musician, or even look young, don't even bother with this place. There's some very weird sexual bias going on there too. They did have some relatively up to date sheet music though. read more

Stopped in today for two things and neither panned out. Lack of customer service and out right rude staff. Needed two things. 1. A screw for my son's guitar and 2. Wanted to discuss lessons for my son. The gentleman working this evening was clearly disappointed to have customers walk in. When I asked for a replacement screw for my son's guitar (Lost one but removed one from the neck to bring with us on our search), the sharp response was "I would replace the whole thing". When I asked again if he had the screw, his reply was "I will have to see the guitar". While this 10 second conversation took place, my son was struming a guitar next to us (we are in a guitar store which happens to advertise "lessons for any age") which resulted in the guy yelling at my son. Didn't get the chance to ask the guy about lessons. We just up and left. Went to Ace hardware and easily got the replacement screw without any attitude. Ive been here a couple times and every time i try and give Monty another chance to not disappoint me but each time he still does. Every time in conversation he is super sarcastic, rude, and very demeaning. I've even tried to mind my own business to just look around and then he forces conversations and gets upset when im not even sure if i want to buy something or not. I understand its his business but him being so rude makes me want to not buy anything. Last time i went in looking for a guitar strap and i wasnt a fan of any of the designs but i said thank you as i was leaving and all he did was give a very obviously fake smile and told me to look elsewhere then he said I wasnt going to find anything here and motioned as if to "shoo" me off. Maybe he is more respectful to people more his age and maybe even more so towards male but I dont appreciate all the unnecessary rude and sarcastic comments. I recommend just as Monty told me to "look elsewhere" plus you'll find a lot more things to look at at bigger music stores because they don't really have a wide selection to see in person read more

He abruptly cut me off and said he would only be there for a few more minutes. Apparently their hours are incorrect and they are not open until eight but instead six. Went there today, Saturday at 4:30 in the afternoon and they were closed. Their store hours sign says open Saturday from 10:00ish to 6:00ish. I swear to god, I've never seen anything like it. I give Monty's four stars because they did a great job fixing up my trumpet, but it also took them a while just to get out a few dings in my trumpet. They have teachers giving guitar and other lessons there. They have percussion, a little brass, wood winds, and strings there. They've got all the basics you'd need like valve oil and electric tuners. I go hear the most because it is close by. It is located in the corner of the shopping center at Tatum and Greenway. First, Monty's Music is a small, local mom & pop style business. It is not a big retail outlet like Guitar Center. Monty's has personality and service that the big guys are missing. I have been going into Monty's Music since our kids were in grade school (20+ years). We would get the needed recorder for elementary school, small items. Monty's always had what was needed. About 18 months ago, my wife gave me a guitar and prepaid lessons from Monty's. What I have found since that time is that Monty is truly one of the nicest individuals I know and clearly his passion is music. You can pull up a chair a just talk to Monty about music, instruments etc., and he will spend quality time with you. When was the last time you did that at a big retailer? It is not just all about if I can save a dollar here or there, it is customer service and how I am treated. I have gone into some of the big retailers (Guitar Center for example), sure they have a huge inventory of instruments to consider, but the knowledge the employees have is lacking or flat out missing and I don't want to get into the lack of customer service at these places. With that in mind, I would rather support a local business than a big chain retailer anyway. Regardless, Monty's may not have a large selection on hand, but he will do his best to get you what you need and provide you with his knowledge on a personal basis. It is for this reason that I have now purchased 4 guitars from Monty's Music (and taking guitar & piano lessons). I would recommend that you give Monty's a try, pull up a chair and talk to Monty! read more

This place does not deserve one star. My family and I were not even acknowledged even after fifteen minutes of waiting on the owner. He then tried to shame me into not being able to buy an instrument IN FRONT of my kid and pointing out the most cheapest option. Gave me a good suggestion but then made a few snarky remarks about me not being able to afford a higher quality item. Took my guitar in for a new input jack. Got it back with 2 dead single coils, a dead 5 way switch, a dead volume knob, and a dead tone knob only to find out that he can no longer work on it a week later. He had wired the bridge pickup straight to the input jack and ended up telling me to take it to another shop. It would have cost me less than the $70 I paid to just f*** up the wiring myself.
