I usually go to a different YMCA, but this one had pool hours that worked better for my schedule last week. So, I decided to check it out. Pros: 1. Separate pools for lap swimming and water-walking or water aerobics instruction. Hallelujah. 2. Pool lanes are quite large, so sharing wouldn't be difficult at all. That said, at the day/time I was there, I didn't have to share. 3. Towel service (hint: the large towels are inside the entrances to the locker rooms). 4. Garage parking underground is a super nice perk for a rainy day. 5. Friendly staff (but that seems to be all YMCAs). Cons: 1. Shower situation was shockingly poorly planned, given that this entire building is relatively new construction. I guess showers don't need benches where you can put your stuff? In the women's locker room, people had pulled chairs over into the shower area to "solve" this problem, but it wasn't great. 2. For anyone who's uncomfortable in a public locker room for any particular reason (I can think of several), there are very few (only two) private shower/locker rooms available relative to my home YMCA, and they're labeled with rather unfriendly signs saying that you shouldn't use them unless you're a family or a disabled person. read more

Hi, I grew up in the park cities and worked out at the old Preston Road YMCA before they redeveloped into Moody. I did promotional advertising for the Touchdown Club and Rise School of Dallas to benefit Rise Roundup. Ever since the T Boone Pickens YMCA on Ross Avenue and Akard closed the clientele and employees at Moody Family YMCA have become much less appealing. They lack people skills are out of shape and have no business working there. The guy at the check-in counter called me his brotha this morning. We are not related. They act like you owe them something even when you've been a member for generations. Dylan Davis, a trainer at Moody, is a loudmouth. He puts his hands all over the women that he trains. He rubs his Thera-gun on their glutes in front of everyone at the Young Men's Christian Association. I am embarrassed to say that I work out at Moody because of him. It is a shame that such a nice neighborhood has given in to hiring people that act like this. Clients park their cars in the handicap and reserved spots across the street at the church regardless of their lack of parking privileges. It is a zoo. Stopped in here just to take a peek and grab a quick drink from vending machine. Spent my last $3 bills for my drink to end up stuck in the machine. On a hot day I was disappointed but the receptionist Matthew was so kind and helpful. Found me some water and another sparkling drink and even gave me my money back and said he would get it from the vending person later. The gym itself looks clean and folks were in and out so I can tell this is a busy spot. People of all ages. Customer service is great so I could imagine myself coming here daily to stay active and feel welcomed. read more

Let me take a moment and tilt my hat to 3 of the most influential people on God's green earth. Coach Ava Combs, Coach John McWilliams and Ms. Lakeshia Jones. Dealing with health issues I have been inspired to get up and move ! And not be bound to illness and being unhealthy. I have the best support system. Even when their classes are not in session they still come around and give me pointers on how to exercise correctly, using time they don't get paid for. As for Coach Ave she goes above and beyond when she sees me. Her classes are tough, upbeat, energetic & spiritual! She's serious, no matter your age she has something for you to do. I can see the passion in her eyes & heart. Coach John is fun, exciting, funny, energetic and alot easier. He always has something new and different for us. Leaving classes like this makes me feel accomplished. Everyday Im greeted by Ms.Lakeshia Jones who signed me into the program. She have encouraged me so much I once got teary eyed. Because finding people who care is like a needle in a haystack. Everyone seems more like family because we hug and greet each other like we've haven't seen each other in years before and after class. No one makes you feel uncomfortable, unwanted & unsafe. It's fun for all ages. It's clean from A-Z and shout out to all the other instructors for making this location amazing! read more

I really enjoyed my visits here to Moody Family YMCA. One of the nicer ones I've been to. First off the parking is awesome here. You park in a garage, it's cooler, plenty of space to park, good lighting, easy access in and out, no worries about a ticket or validation or parking your car outside in the hot sun. That was a big plus for me with the weather being 102 degrees. Facilities are clean, they greet you up front like any other Y. They are a bit more intense here about rules and policies, like your profile - i.e. making sure you're a member, if you're a national member, if you signed a waiver, etc. I had to sign one since it was my first time and it was emailed to me and I had to sign it before I worked out but didn't have my phone. Well someone helped me sign it at the desk. So the staff here are very accommodating and helpful here. There are a pile of folded towels on the counter as you walk into the treadmill area - very nice to have these out in the open plus a place where you can discard dirty towels. I went for the pool to swim laps. They apparently have a lot of swimmers and you're supposed to sign up accordingly and also can swim in 1 hour increments / slots. The pool was nice, has 5-6 lanes, there's another pool for kids and lounging. I had to share my lane once, not a big deal, and I did not have to sign up either - the lifeguard was cool about it since census was low. I think it was a timing thing that benefited me. This would definitely be my to-go YMCA if I lived in Big D. I went to T-Boone Pickens downtown - they have odd pool hours, opens morning, closed from 12-2:30, then opens up after that, and the ambiance wasn't as aesthetically pleasing or nice as Moody. But that's just me. Been to several YMCA's across the south recently (TN, AL, LA, TX) and Moody Family has to be one of the best ones I've experienced. You may even run into a Kendall Jenner look-a-like-doppelganger there - just an FYI in case you do a double-take.....it's not KJ but close I tell ya. read more

I love my YMCA membership because I can go to different YMCA branches when I travel. I happened to want a quick workout fix and stopped by at Moody Family. Spacious and safe underground parking lot. Very nice facility. Clean locker room. This place is definitely more for cardio fixes and machine workouts. They have limited lifting equipment so docked a point there. Overall, would come back if I'm ever in the Dallas area. read more

I'm dropping my review to one star. The gym is not for adults that want to use a real gym. It's a gym for kids to play and elderly people to use some machines. I was on the bike the other day and I had to take an urgent call. There's no phone calls allowed in the gym area which honestly slipped my mind. Rather than tapping me on the shoulder and asking me to take my call elsewhere (which would have been totally reasonable) an elderly lady got in my face and started pointing and screaming that I shouldn't be on the phone. She claimed she was a wealthy donor and could have my membership terminated and to just ask the front desk who she was. I tried to diffuse the situation by apologizing and introducing myself but to no avail. She mocked my attempts to calm her down. I brought staff over and they were at a loss of what to do. I told her and the staff that rather than her try and use her donor power to terminate my membership, I would rather just cancel it and leave. So I'm on the hunt for a new gym. These are the types of folks that you'll see at the Moody YMCA. This isn't a gym for people trying to meet fitness goals. Very disappointing. read more

I got a little Moody when using this gym. It's understandable. I'd rather be food touring. This second gym I used in Dallas was the better one. Their stretching area was annoying on a raised platform, making it very uncomfortable and really difficult to properly do floor exercises. The machines were generally good but they were missing a few key items and they really only had one of everything, so there was some delay and waiting for things. They didn't even have proper cable machines - the Cybex cross chest cables - which is really annoying. The showers and locker room were really nice but had strange combination locks that I found it difficult to use. Also it's too hot inside this gym, but that's another story. AC please! The front desk was nice enough to let us in without any sort of phone call or Security check and they have a downstairs underground parking lot which is a great idea in such heat. I was happy that they had a bike that I could actually use unlike the other YMCAs that I used in Dallas. But no Cables machine means I can't give 5 stars. And gives me the Moody YMCA Blues. Now I have to go talk to some knights in white satin. (Never reaching the end) read more

This facility rocks! Their indoor cycle classes are incredible and the bikes some of the best on the market. The cycle instructors know their stuff and there are plenty of classes available. The facility is clean, staff friendly, and equipment always kept up. I would recommend this location to any fitness enthusiast. read more

The facilities are adequate for working out but for the past few years the Moody YMCA has turned into a haven for the middle school clientele. These kids have accumulated to the point where regular members have left to join other non YMCA gyms. This started by the YMCA policy of allowing kids under 14 to work out freely on the weights. The inclusion of these kids has turned the YMCA into a chaotic romper room and is really only one accident away for a kid to be severely injured. Other members have tried to talk to executive staff but it has fallen on deaf ears. read more

I love to get my work-out on. At least that's a lie I tell myself to get to the gym in the morning. Another lie I tell myself is that I can only watch TV if I'm at the gym. The YMCA on Preston knows all about my lies and is oh-so accommodating, with flat screen TVs, full of delicious cable, attached to almost every cardio machine. Sometimes, the TVs are not enough motivation- and that's where the classes come into play. The Y lures people to come get their fitness on by offering nearly 10 billion amazing classes a day. Pilates, yoga, body pump, boot camp- sure, I've seen you all before. This YMCA has zumba- which is a delightful mix of latin groove and cardio. 3 classes a week give me all my moves for the club on the weekends! Seriously- those moves are HOT! The music is great and the teachers are really funny- especially Julie. Also, various cycling classes, tai chi, N.I.A (dance and tai chi blend), and water fitness classes really make the Y a fun place to be. The machines are clean, the water is cold, and the classes are top-notch. read more

A family friendly gym where you can enjoy an abundance of treadmills, weights and classes of all sorts. WEIGHTS are located next to the cardio equipment and is a relatively small area, but functional nonetheless. CARDIO equipment are plenty, fully functional and most provide a variety of entertainment and workout options. You can even login and have defaulted settings just for you. The swimming POOL is huge and more importantly, clean. Most CLASSES are upstairs on the second floor (3 separate class rooms) and schedules are posted at the front desk or at the entrance of each classroom. You simply sign up at the front desk right before each class starts. The gym is absolutely accommodating that they provide clean restrooms, water fountains, towels, cleaning wipes and even coffee! DAYCARE is available but I'm not certain of the times BASKETBALL COURT use does not require to sign up and is massive in space that there is plenty of space for many to play. GARAGE parking access through Normandy, but quick pick ups and drop off driveways at the front facing Preston Rd. read more

This is my closest YMCA and I thought I would give it a go. I started attending the 5am group classes throughout the week. I love the classes and options offered. The new location is EVEN BETTER. I just hate that once the new facility opened up, my membership increased by $10 without anykind of notification. It was months before I noticed and they said they sent emails and letters but I got NOTHING. Anyway, since the location is so nice, I let it go. It's big, pretty and has TONS of parking. I hated the parking situation at the old location. I just wish this Y had dance classes. My favs are BodyPump and Barre. read more

This place is ok. The free weight area is really small and can get crowded at peak times. You won't be intimidated by a lot of giant buff guys, but the older crowd can spend a lot of time resting on the machines and some days it can take you awhile to get through a workout. The personal trainers are generally in the way. They do things such as resr their notepads on the benches, take up large areas of the upstairs and equipment for one client, and do split sets on the important machines. A dedicated personal training area or even better self-awareness on their part would help. read more

Despite my repetitiveness in writing yet another update to a previously written review, I seriously felt compelled to share not only how wonderful the organization the YMCA is, but the Park Cities one in particular, as well. With numerous classes to choose from you are guaranteed a solid workout from a well-trained and knowledgeable coach. The schedule is packed with classes that range from studio cycling to body works, which I took tonight for the first time. During the pain and sweat while doing lunges and squats with weights, I am still excited to know that this sort of workout is available to me at such a great cost the YMCA offers. It was a tough class that worked every muscle in my body. But the best part of the class, however, had to be the age range. I am always impressed to a woman in her sixties kicking ass with weights and lunges, while I am about to faint and look like a weakling next her. Great motivation, indeed. read more

In my few months in Texas, I have joined the Masters Swim Team while also going to workout classes. The staff keeps the place extremely clean and refreshing. Great place--my daughter takes cheer classes from Tamera! She is absolutely amazing. And the prices are super reasonable. The YMCA really has some great classes! Thanks to Tam and the Y, my daughter had her cast off one month before cheer try-outs and made the squad! She had a long way to go too. This was not a slam dunk. The facility overall has everything you could want from a gym/rec center. Great programs for all ages. I saw folks from every walk of life--all ages, genders and sociodemographics. You'd think it'd be smack full 'o'parkies, but it was way more than that. Yeah...I'm from Lakewood. And our YMCA is awesome too, but it doesn't have Tam. read more

Fantastic gym with a superb amount of classes offered but the only reason I knocked off a star was because they are only open 2p-5p on Sundays. Bummer. Not the biggest YMCA. Doesn't really compare in size or scope to the one downtown or the Northhaven one, but it is cute and utilitarian. They are able to squeeze in a lot into the building which looks small on the outside to me but is actually bigger than it looks. Good classes and good pool. They went through a big hub bub about whether they should expand it a few years ago, but I guess that fell through. read more

No Sunday hours. Sometimes it gets pretty crowded as it is a small location. But they have free child-care. And it is in Highland Park - which is oh so close to my cheap condo. I prefer the Town North location, but sometimes my Zumba class is offered at a more palatable time here. read more

I've just started going to this Y and I really love it! Everyone who works there is nice and courteous, they have plenty of machines (tho I hear it gets REALLY packed on Sundays as they're only open 2-5), a huge variety of classes, two pools (indoor and outdoor), a nursery to drop your kids off.... what more could you want? So far, I've tried Yoga with Gregg - it was ok, but I'm coming from some pretty intense Power Yoga in Orlando. They do have Power Yoga classes which I'm dying to try. This evening I'm going to hit up the Cardio Kickboxing class... Woohoo!! There's Zumba, Tai Chi, Body Sculpt, Spinning... all kinds of stuff to try!! I also love the fact that you can use all of the facilities (ex: cycling room) when classes aren't scheduled in there. I'm so happy with my new gym! Yay! read more

I was working out with my 10 year old. He was right next to me and was doing lunges without weight. We were told to leave because he was not 15! Is this not a "family" facility?
