It is a standard YMCA. Lowest tier gym and equipment, but you know that going in. The issue is the staff. I tried going in to see the gym and make sure it at least had the basics, I live a block away so I can make it work. Dude has me stand there waiting while he does some other stuff, about eight minutes. Then says before he will allow me to look at the equipment I have to let them take a picture of me. Of course I say no because that has nothing to do with safety or anything that wouldn't be illegal. So the guy just tells me I can't look. Now, in a similar situation I once heard of from a buddy in law enforcement, people were using pictures and IDs to make fake passports and IDs for some trafficking. Doubt that is what the kid was doing, but it still creeped me out that this young man was collecting pictures of people. I ended up going to Lifetime and it felt safer. read more

Michael at the front desk is rude and unprofessional. He did not provide solutions just made this experience become concerning. I left my old gym that is closer to my house because on the west coast the YMCA is so family oriented. When people visit we have never had issues bringing them as a guest at no additional cost. But charging $15 for a family member visiting is ridiculous. Looks like I won't be able to work out for the week. I'm starting to regret my decision to switch. Was so excited to workout today as I've recently been getting back into it after a period of feeling unmotivated and just generally down. I was turned away for wearing a sports bra as this is a "family oriented, Christian environment". Ok. I get that sentiment. But why is this rule just now being enforced? I know this wasn't enforced in past years. Also what about swimsuits? Are two pieces no longer ok? We're being a bit selective about how this rule is enforced huh? Not withstanding the inherent misogyny of policing women's modesty in general, this is a GYM. Where people come to move their bodies and sweat. Sports bras aren't a fashion statement. They're practical I'm a paying member of this gym and was so happy and excited to be working out again. Now I'm feeling discriminated against and patronized. I'm sorry women's bodies make you uncomfortable, but women should not be turned away for sports bras and no I don't want you to offer me a shirt either. To the people reading this thinking I need to get over it and it's not a big deal...The bottom line is that this rule is based in misogyny and quite frankly doesn't make sense. Again, it's a gym. People sweat. Edit: as ridiculous as their attire policy is I felt I should give my opinion on the gym itself. Its a great value for me as I mostly go for the classes. Great instructors. Will continue to go before I moonlight as an exotic dancer in my sports bra. read more

They call me the White Rock, so I totally get why this gym is named after me. The YMCA we used on the first day was a mixed bag. It's a beautiful brand new facility with a nice view out of the many windows. However, they have absolutely no upright stationary bikes, other than a couple of spinners which are very uncomfortable and are not what I was looking for. It's maybe the first gym I've ever been to from YMCA I didn't have any of the type of bikes that I use. I can use any of the many different brands - they just didn't have a single one. It had most of the weight machines that we use and that side of things was not too bad. There wasn't much of a wait time for anything. The wifi works really well and the locker rooms are nice. They let us right in without any kind of security phone call. The parking lot was fine but it would be nice if they had underground facilities to stop your car getting super hot in the summer. Overall I would give it a 4-star rating largely because they didn't have any of the bikes that I needed. Anyway, I liked this gym, or my name isn't Duane Johnson. read more

We have a large family (5 teens, 2 adults and 1 senior). We pay $121 for unlimited access (classes, visits). We can utilize the Y's in Austin when we visit friends and other nearby locations with indoor pools. It's a great spot for the entire family. Also love that they offer financial assistance on their programming (our neighbors received a scholarship on their membership and kids sports when they lost their job). Thankful to have a Y nearby. Mom (81) loves it as well as they have a thriving senior population. It's not just a gym, it's a community. read more

I would NOT recommend the White Rock YMCA if you have any concern for you or your family's safety. My husband was assaulted on the basketball court last night, and afterwards reported it at the advice of his friend who witnessed the incident. His friend stated "You should report this, otherwise he is going to do it to someone else." Well, guess what the White Rock YMCA's response was to the incident? "Our cameras were down so we cannot verify what actually happened, and both you and the other guy have different stories. We'd like to request that you do not come here for the remainder of the week so you have some time to cool down." Since when is the response to assault for the victim to just take a week off in order to calm down? (And still charge us, might I add.) It is evident there will be no repercussions for the assailant. And clearly the White Rock YMCA location does not adhere to it's written policies (https://www.ymcadallas.org/policies): "The YMCA is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all members and guests. We ask all persons to act maturely, behave responsibly, and to respect the rights and dignity of others at all times when in our facilities, on our property or participating in our programs or events." "Unlawful, abusive, derogatory, harassing, unwelcome, obscene or violent language or behavior towards others or themselves." "Please notify a YMCA staff person immediately if there is an accident, injury, unusual incident or you believe that that this Code of Conduct is being violated." Truly disappointed in this response, as my husband has been playing basketball at this location for the past year. It is a contact sport, and can get aggressive. However, that does not warrant getting a basketball thrown at you and then hit across the face and yelling threatening language. So please be cautious. 3 stars because it's always clean and have towels.. they are extremely limited on the weights so if someone has the 10 lb free weights and you need them, tough. If you want to use a particular machine and someone is on it, there isn't a duplicate. My husband and I joined because it's close to our house but there has only been 1 time that I felt like I could actually workout and not waiting for any weights or machines. It's extremely frustrating.. I left today after walking on the treadmill for 10 minutes because when I went to lift, every single bench and machine was being used. You would think for such a large facility they would have multiple machines and weights so you can actually workout. read more

Female lifting weights? Skip it. The weight area is on the small side. Smaller than the same Y's stretch area. There's a decent amount of equipment, but it's a bit of a squeeze in the space, particularly for anything that doesn't have a station set up. All of this would be fine if other (*male*) lifters knew anything about weight room etiquette. Staring at me while working out. Check. Walking to the corner where I was and pretending to trip over my weights. Triple check. Refusing to allow me to work in between sets, both outright and by draping themselves over weights while resting between sets. Check. I didn't even consider doing a pelvic lift with a bar. After two visits, I was too uncomfortable to return. The downtown Y is better for female weightlifting. read more

This gym has everything you need for a full body workout. Although it does get busy during the rush times, you can always plan around that. I would recommend this gym to a friend. Equipment is new and clean. The staff is friendly and always takes care of you! Also I always try to stop by I Love Juice Bar which is right around the corner toward Grand Road. They have the protein smoothies I love and use natural ingredients and no artificial junk. Definitely check this gym out if you are looking for a new place to without! read more

I drove all the way to this YMCA just to get denied access. My friend and I went to this gym, presented our memberships, and were told we couldn't work out because we were not 18. Whether it's the law or not, they were EXTREMELY rude about it and could have 1000000000% been more respectful. read more

I remember last year I was thinking "where can I go to a gym that's affordable and has a pool?" After researching many options and seeing how expensive they are, memories of my childhood at the YMCA came flooding back. We checked out this local location- which is absolutely gorgeous with big tall clean windows, and a large space, and I fell in love. It feels so fancy and the price is so affordable. Everything is always so clean. They have gym area, pool, fitness classes, childcare.... And the best thing is if you get a membership you can literally go to any Y. For instance, this Y only has an outdoor pool which limits the days you can go (I would go during early spring and late fall but it's not an option) but other Y's have indoor pools, available year round! My partner didn't even think of the Y before I suggested it and now he's very glad. About the only negative I can think of is that this Y has very limited hours, and no hot tub or sauna. But for the price- it's honestly amazing. Highly recommend. read more

I looked up the White Rock YMCA. I saw 3.5 stars on Yelp. Immediately, this was a problem. The White Rock YMCA has changed my life entirely. Not only has basically everyone at the front staff been incredibly warm, welcoming, and kind, but I have grown in this gym. Are there accidents and mistakes? Absolutely. That's the case with every gym. However the Y's ability to handle all of it is something I have learned from. Truly I have never been at any gym as great as the White Rock Y- with all the necessary equipment to workout, play basketball, and swim. But most importantly the culture and environment of the gym. read more

This is a gorgeous location an upgrade from their previous two sites. The staff is excellent and are hard working. They seem to always be buzzing around, keeping the areas clean, getting things ready for customers. The gym floor is full of cardio and weight machines, so there is ALWAYS an open machine. It does tend to get crowded at the peak times (early AM and 5-6pm). My only complaint is the space in the free weight area. It is somewhat limited so you may have to maneuver a little to get free space for your deadlifts or curls. There are several benches in the area too, but if you're not using them, they are more in the way than helpful. Overall, this is a very nice upgrade for the White Rock YMCA and a great addition to the neighborhood. Go check it out!!! read more

I love living so close to a clean, safe gym. The YMCA has great equipment: neat cardio machines, free weights, bosu balls, etc. I have been a member for about a month and am definitely getting my monies worth with the low month cost for a family membership. The only couple of downsides would be the short weekend hours (especially Sunday) and the huge waste of space that is the lobby. They have dedicated about a third of the floor space to a magazine-reading area. They should have purchased more machines or have a bigger stretching area instead of a place to sit and relax. When I go to a gym, I don't expect to lounge around. They should have reduced the lounging area and given a bigger space for stretching and free weights. read more

I like the kind employees and guests at this branch. Too bad parking was outdated as soon as it opened , is my only draw back . But , it works out with the employees parking on the street. Living in Lakewood , Lil' Forest Hills and White Rock Lake area for 38 yrs. I have used the YMCA for 35 of those years.I became a member in the early 80's working out . After having my own kids i used after school child care, on sight . When I divorced, I qualified for a YMCA scholarship during the school years and nearby YMCA, during holidays and summer vacation. I have followed this particular branch from it's old , huge location next to Cowboys on Gaston Ave (now Tom Thumb). Next , it moved across the street (behind Subway-now gone) to a smaller location .Finally the YMCA found a new home , it's current location, an old church property. #ChristianValues . I was never disappointed with the care and attention the counselors back then or now gave to my kids or grand kids. I would show up early to check on the counselors to see if all was cool and if my kids were happy. They were always playing , having a snack or doing their homework. I was able to work as a single mom knowing my girls were safe and happy after school ,holidays and summer . I'm proud to say that both of my daughters grew up with the YMCA and now , as their career. #Proudmama read more

I can not say enough great things about this Y!!! The Childwatch IS INCREDIBLE! I have only ever left my kids with two people, my mother and 1 sitter and they are almost 5! The Childwatch here is the only other place I have trusted 100% even in one of them have bumped their head or tripped they have told me, things I don't consider a big deal. This review is long overdue. Last season my daughter played in their 3rd grade girls basketball league and the experience was extremely disappointing. Aside from being locked out of the gym for half of our games, being jerked around by the league with the schedules to accommodate other teams who were not prepared, and dealing with officials who had little to no basic knowledge of basketball, I guess they did a good job? No. No they didn't. They really don't have the right to call it Basketball because that's not what it is. They should call it Wreckball instead. If you enjoy watching your little girl get beat up, then this is the league for you. No fouls are called. Parents and coaches turn a blind eye and often join in on the mayhem. Disgusting. It's no wonder Texas has seen a sharp decline in girls wanting to play Basketball in Junior High and High School. One season of Wreckball and they never want to look at a Basketball again. We are now playing at SVAA and have found their league leadership to be much more understanding, fair, and balanced. White Rock Girls Wreckball is made up of parents and coaches too cheap and/or lazy to commit to Academy/Club Basketball. They'll do whatever it takes to get their little wreck trophy. I signed up for a free 7 day try out at this location about two weeks ago and thought it was an okay gym. Staff didn't offer me a tour or try an sale me a membership. I asked one of the front desk ladies a few questions and they were short and didn't want to say much so I stopped asking. The child care staff was probably the only thing I liked about this place. I didn't even finish my free trial because of the lack of customer service. No sauna and no indoor pool was also a huge disappointment. For these reasons I did not join! read more

They hurt my 10 month old daughter at the child care and didn't tell me about it. I noticed the sever scratches on my infants ankle when I got in my car and went back inside to find out what happened. The manager didn't seem to care about what happened so I cancel my membership. Joined this gym which is more expensive than other gyms in the area and I have been repeatedly disappointed. No matter what time of day I come there are rarely open treadmills. I even asked management when the best time to come would be and even then there are not enough treadmills open. Parking has also been an issue continuously and now that the pool is finally up and running it is constantly closed due to not enough lifeguards? Also every time I walk into the locker room to try and lock up my stuff there is a sign saying "closed for cleaning" and there is a male staff member in the women's locker room cleaning. I totally understand that locker rooms need to be cleaned but this has happened more than 5 times since I joined in May. This is extremely inconvenient for those of us who work and need to get in and out of the locker room quickly! Is there not a female staff member available to clean the locker room so your paying members don't have to wait 20 minutes to use the facilities? I don't believe this new location has enough equipment/staff to keep up with the needs of their members. read more

So I'm getting to the point in my journey where all that's left are YMCA's, rec centers, and workout studios. Here I will reviewing a YMCA. This is the White Rock Y in Lakewood. This is definitely a place for the community, and not really the brosefs and gym bunnies. They have a ton of programs (none of which, unfortunately, I got to use) so if you want to do group exercise that's definitely an option. This building is newly built, and it's very sleek, nice, and clean. Also they are very reasonably priced, and from what I understand if money is tight they can give scholarships to reduce the cost of membership. Layout They have an outdoor pool, which is very nice. I think it's used most often for kids programs, but I think there is adult swim as well. It's an open an light place: high ceilings and floor to ceiling windows. There is a nice balance of weight machines, cardio machines, and free weights. They have only one squat rack, but to be honest it's nice that they have at least one. I attended here on some more peak hours (like 5:30pm) and I definitely had to wait a bit for the squat rack to open up, or for a bench to open up. But no wait was very long, I've had much worse at LA Fitness Signature Club. The dumbbells actually go up to 100#, and they have plenty of weight plates for people to use. It does bug me though that they have different brands of weight plates. So if you like your weights to be symmetrical (and who doesn't) you will sometimes have to move some plates around to access the one you want. Locker Rooms Very nice and clean. Has really everything you could want. Extremely adequate. If you're looking for a cheaper place that will offer plenty of group exercises, an outdoor pool, and facilities that will probably meet your needs, this particular YMCA is a really good place to check out. read more

I have been a member since they opened the new facility. It's very clean and has a decent layout. I've tried a few classes and the intructors were good. My problems with the Y are with their personal training staff. When I first signed up I took them up on the complimentary training, however, my trainer was late. The person that was going to fill in for her was only available for 30 mins, not the full hour that I requested. The trainer, I found out later, is the training manager. He didn't listen to me when I told him about my low back injury and insisted that I do kettle bell swings. My back was aching for days after. My most recent issue was that my new trainer was nearly 30 mins late to our first session. She apologized and said I wouldn't have to pay for the session, but I was still charged for it. I needed to reschedule my second session and she informed me that there was a 24 hour cancelation policy- no one told me that (I contacted her the night before my 7am session). This week, I received a call from a new trainer that Saif the one I'd been with was leaving the Y and wanted to know if I would change my training session to a different day. I feel like the Y management should have contacted me, not another trainer who wouldn't work in my time slot. Very unprofessional. I've emailed the training manager before, also, about having a private yoga session so that I can learn how to modify moves for my low back. Never did get a response from him. The equipment on the floor is okay, some of the eliptical machines need to be tighten up because they squeak. Not too much room for stretching or warming up. read more

Great gym for the price! I live in Lakewood and was a member of the old gym, and was very excited to hear about the new gym. It just opened in March, and the facility does not disappoint. It is a beautiful, large, airy space with free weights, weight machines, ellipticals, and treadmills. It is much bigger than the old location, and I never have to wait for a treadmill now. They also have a large variety of classes. They just added an early morning yoga class that I've only made it out to one (shame on me!). I've tried the yoga and Zumba classes, and they pretty good. The only reason I docked one star is for the hours. Their weekend hours are fairly limited. They do not open until 1PM on Sunday and close at 6PM on both Sat and Sun. I know I personally would like to go in on a Sunday morning or night to get a workout in before the work week starts. read more

I have been a member of about a dozen health clubs over the years... Many closed down, or were bought out, or merged. So i thought I'd consider a health club that had better odds of staying in business. The YMCA Whiterock is more like a "Country Club" (facility wise) than a typical gym. The main workout area has 20'-24' tall ceilings with floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking green open spaces. Lots of every kind of exercise machine, free weights, outside swimming pool etc. Classes available. Nice staff, clean locker rooms. SPACIOUS modern facility. read more

This place is awesome... I used to work at a fancy highland park area gym and this place is truly a breath of fresh air!! It's VERY CLEAN, the air is cool, and machines work well! I also love all the natural light that comes through the huge windows! The base membership prices are more than fair, but we were thankful to qualify for an income-based membership which reduced are monthly rate significantly. We love that the Y heartily welcomes economical, ethnical, size and age diversity into their club! It's a down to earth crowd that comes here and not being a terribly fit person, I feel very comfortable working out. I know other reviews have complained about the parking and crowds... I haven't experienced this problem but I also would rather skip a workout than go to any gym at 9am or 5pm. We usually go 7pm/8pm ... Once I went at 11:30am and it was good then too. Constructive criticism of the Y: The women's locker room's floor gets quite wet in certain areas after people come in from swimming but are otherwise very well maintained. Some of the TVs don't work on the machines and some of the headphone jacks have issues too (but this being said, I've always found an available machine with the TV working). The front desk staff doesn't greet or say goodbye to people but are very friendly and helpful when approached. All in all, we are so happy we found the Y!! read more

Great facility and child watch program. I use it mostly for the pool in the summer and that's where my complaints start. The pool is never clean - chunks of hair constantly floating around, candy wrappers...always dirty. It's gross swimming laps because you wind up with gobs of other people's hair in your hand. The lifeguards are also worthless. I've never seen a lazier bunch of adolescents. I don't know where their supervisor is. They use every excuse to close the pool and then sit in the pool deck eating and playing on their phones. read more

This gym is newly renovated. It's spacious however it doesn't have a lot of weightlifting equipments, (in my husband's opinion). I like that there are numerous classes up until noon and few more in the evenings. Parking lot is always packed so it's best not too god during prime gym time. Staff is always friendly. There is an outdoor poor with swim classes in the summer. The lockers are kept clean. read more
