This is quintessential Vermont eatery. My hubby and our close friends stopped here a few times when we were staying in town for a couple days. The owners are out-of-this-world charming. I had a salad that was so delicious and fresh and I'm obsessed with the maple latte. Not only does this place serve food in their cute eat-in store but they sell all kinds of homemade natural products local products! Very cool place. We went for lunch on a Friday great soups and salads. Service was great food was good as well. Being somewhat local (20 miles away) weekday lunch is best as tourist abound on weekends, not a bad thing just a thing for local types. Recommend for sure. read more

Absolutely amazing! My entire family loved this place (which never happens with 2 girls). From the waffles, wraps, teas, coffee and fresh baked goods everyone was able to find something! Moon Dog Cafe is an yummy deli with so many homemade delights. They mostly use organic or Vermont products to make delicious things such as the sesame noodles, curry chicken salad, tandoori chicken soup, thai chicken sandwich, cheesesteak wrap, chocolate chip cookies, coffee cake and blondie brownies. After every bite, I said, "YUM!" If you are in the area it is worth a stop for lunch or just dessert. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My boyfriend and I were staying a few blocks away from the Moon Dog Cafe over the weekend and decided to grab a quick breakfast. n a whim we stopped at this place and realized it would be more than just a quick breakfast. I was blown away by their menu and all the little trinkets and things for sale in the cafe. My boyfriend and I both had maple lattes which were delicious. Our breakfast was delicious: he had the stuffed french toast and I had the most amazing egg sandwich ever. In between two large pieces of toast were roasted potatoes, an over easy egg and vermont cheddar cheese. The service was great: fast and friendly. Will definitely be going back. read more

Let's just say, get ready for superlatives. The minestrone soup: probably the best I've ever had; the thanksgiving turkey sandwich was the best sandwich my wife says she's ever eaten. Exaggeration, I think not. Minestrone came with kale, noodles, beans, and a perfectly textured broth - pack it with protein and it tastes phenomenal. My wife's turkey sandwich had a stuffing like none ever tasted before - it had roasted carrots with the perfect blend of herbs piled high with cranberries and fresh turkey. I also had a side plate of hummus and grape leaves that was simply splendid Enhanced by fresh cucumbers, small herb crackers , and roasted peppers. It's a small joint but it was memorable. First the good part: The food is half way decent, fresh and organic and the service was good, although it's not a typical sit down experience in the sense that you order the food at the counter and they bring it to you after you have a seat and then you have to go back up to the counter to pay. Tip optional, though, and we left one. I think the reason that this place wasn't up our alley is that it's kind of a Vermonter's place....kind of a hippie, dingy, run-down atmosphere, which maybe some people would like. My problem with it is that it seemed rather unsanitary with the flies and all. They didn't have air conditioning and some of the windows were open so....there were flies...not exactly appetizing. And the menus were sticky. I don't know, maybe for this neck of the woods it's a four star place, but for where we usually dine it just wasn't up to par. read more

How is it possible to have a restaurant that uses fresh, wholesome, organic ingredients and serves them in such a way that you feel you're "cheating" or doing something decadent by eating them? Prices are surprisingly reasonable, the atmosphere is charming, and the staff is friendly. Not only is the Cafe worth the stop on your travels, but it's also worthy of being a destination of its own. It's not a diet food, but pancakes, topped with fruit, bananas, berries and honest 100% pure Vermont Maple Syrup. You've never tasted a grilled cheese sandwich like this one. Meat loaf? They don't prepare it every day. Might order ahead, because it goes fast. Unbelievably delicious. The staff? Couldn't be nicer. Never rattled no matter how busy it gets. We love this place! Just discovered it a few months ago as it is a bit of a drive for us. My husband is gluten-intolerant and he can find a variety of things to eat here. The soups are to die for, and the breakfast burritos are delicious and so big that I wind up taking half home. The atmosphere is 1970's cafe with some fun decor. In addition there are veggies, natural foods and body products for purchase. We have been back numerous times since we found Moon Dog, and will keep going back. read more

Stopped by for lunch. On an 86 degree day, the interior is not air conditioned and even with multiple fans blowing, it was sweltering. However, the roast beef was house roasted and herbed on an excellent sour dough bread. The locally produced leaf lettuce and tomatoes added to the horseradish mayo made for a great sandwich. A vinaigrette fresh pea and greens side salad was not requested but was a complimentary addition. Half of the 8" sandwich became my dinner. The pluot and pear pie and ginger scones I saw, will make me stop back tomorrow. read more

The best wrap and salad I've ever had! Stopped here for lunch after reading other reviews, so I expected the food to be good. I did not expect to be blown away. I was amazed by the flavor, quality and quantity of the food. My husband and I shared the Portabella mushroom wrap ( not sure of the name) and the Cobb Salad. Both were absolutely delicious. The natural market vibe couldn't be more authentic and the gentleman working the counter (maybe the owner) couldn't have been nicer. I've been here twice, once in winter, once in summer. I would come any time of day they are open, any day of the week! It is true that this place is a hippie nest, but that is not off-putting because the food and drinks are amazing! In the winter I had coffee and a snack, it was all great and they also have local milk for coffee. A few days ago my bf, df (dog friend), and I went for lunch: curried chicken salad with walnuts and grapes, and a stuffed portobello mushroom, plus a slice of carrot cake--my df just behaved herself and attracted admirers, as she does everywhere she goes. Seriously I can't wait to go back, because everything we had was delicious and worth the money, which reasonable anyway. read more

passing through Chester VT on a scenic Sunday we were happy to find this café with outdoor seating. We went inside to order....she got a roast turkey sandwich, minus the bread, which was very generous and tasty. I chose a curried chicken wrap, which was fine. Food and juices were brought outside to our table...service was attentive and pleasant. All in all, a great find. As it happened, my wife left an item under our table which we did not miss until home a couple hours later. There was already a message on our phone from Moon Dog asking us to call...we did and they overnighted it the next day (at our expense of course)...very honest and thoughtful. Will definitely return. Our testimony to Moon Dog's superb home-style quality is that we ate here three days in a row out of our five-day visit to drink in the spectacular Fall foliage. All is local, fresh, and organic, served in generous portions. This is a funky local place with artisanal gift items in addition to mind-blowing baked goods and other menu items. Delicious pear crumb cake one day, coconut cake the next, and then cheescake-filled chocolate bundt cake the next...you get the idea. That in addition to other cakes, muffins, cookies, all too tempting. The salads, waffles, French toast were perfectly suited for us visitors after mornings seeing the local sights. Larry gave us sightseeing recommendations which we followed faithfully. We will return to this area again, not only for the natural beauty and welcoming locals, but because we didn't have a chance to try the corn chowder. Did I mention the homemade soups? read more
