Stopped in here for a drink during a road trip after a guy at one of the ski shops in town recommended it. So glad we pulled a U-turn to come in! My group all ordered a specialty drink and breakfast pastry and everything was to die for. I got the Aztec Hot Chocolate and was in love, so rich and tasty without being too heavy. I also got their signature Maple Syrup Bread Pudding and it was so, so good. Just melt in your mouth buttery and sweet. Do be warned that this is in a small town that's in no rush. It did take about 15 minutes for the barista to make all our drinks, but he was pleasant and chatting with us the whole time. The slower pace may annoy some city people used to the speed of Starbucks, but the quality is 10 times better than any chain. I would happily wait a bit for a memorable drink. read more

If you are just passing near Chester VT, try to stop into the Moon Dog and do your best to have enough people to sample as much as you can because has a diverse number of creative, fresh and mostly organic eatibles that you can imagine. We asked for a triple sampler of salads and they were absolutely delicious, as was the soup. But the big star was my smoothy that my wife drank most of. LOL. It was a quick stop that we went out of our way for as they were closing on the way to a motel and a great choice. As we were the only ones, we got to sit out in the window seat and view the quiet town. One of the staff had time to come over an share local lore with us and we learned quite a bit. The niftyest suggestion was to go to Chester Junction and see the 'stone village' , a wonderful little experience, especially the tiny stone UU church in the middle of nowhere. read more

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our lunch here. Respect to Moondog for sourcing natural/local/organic ingredients for their food, drinks, and healthy/beauty products. The emphasis on quality products and a homemade touch really makes a positive difference. Located in a nice space right on Main Street in Chester it's easy to find. We parked right in front and were able to grab a little table indoors to eat. We ordered the moon dog salad, Greek salad, minestrone soup, maple walnut cupcake, and kombucha that was on tap. All of it was healthy and tasted delicious!! Good music played over the radio and the wait staff was friendly. If your in the area definitely stop in! read more

We decided to move out of Essex Ct when our neighbor across the street purchased the dilapidated house next to us, tore it down and made it a dog park with a life size bronze of her French poodle. We surveyed New Hampshire end to end but found it too sterile. On to Vermont! Areas near ski areas were absolute ghost towns mid May and local places deserted. Been here before the Hot Maple is an excellent warm drink instead of the usual coffee, tea, or cocoa. My husband and older daughter had breakfast which is served all day, large portions and very good. My younger daughter and I had sandwiches hers grilled cheese with VT cheddar I had the steak wrap very tasty. They use local products and carry some unique items. read more

We found this restaurant on Yelp. It is astounding! My wife ordered the Tuna Melt and I ordered the Clam Chowder and 1/2 Apple and Ham Sandwhich. The chowder is a light, not overly creamy sauce with a hint of Dill and packed with clams and potatoes; it is absolutely the best I have ever had - beyond a doubt! The Apple n Ham on cracked wheat was just amazing. The restaurant has an ambience that is both new an old. It is right on Main Street and in an old beautiful building that has an 1890s feel. My wife's tuna melt was also light and done with a white cheddar; we also took home scones and Apple crisp. Everything is just superb with a fine and delicate taste. I drive past this place everyday on my way to work and just stopped for the first time today. It was fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the organic vegie burger with the curry sauce on it, I could have eat 20 it was so yummy. My boyfriend had a salad that he was just as impressed by. We split the chicken and stars soup which was simple but had a wonderful flavor. All the ingredients to our meals were organic and I believe local, very fairly priced. Love, love, LOVE Moon Dog Cafe! We've been here many times for coffee or lunch and never leave disappointed. Lots of local, organic, vegetarian options. I haven't had anything on the menu that I don't like, though the portobello sandwich is a favorite of mine (and my husband's!). They also make their own hummus, which is fresh and delicious. All of their baked goods are heavenly....and hard to resist from their glass case display. The vibe of the restaurant is artsy and eclectic -- lots of local fares for sale (crafts, clothing, food, etc), and they feature various artists in the gallery in back. I've stopped at this spot more than a few times now but each time has come with different surprises. The homey and eclectic atmosphere is pleasant despite the confusing setup somewhere between sitdown and order-at-the-counter-style restaurant. At the same time, the eatery is inviting with a roomy yet cozy feel to it, so being comfortable won't come at the price of feeling cramped. The food is relatively fresh, with an interesting selection of local and unique brunch options to meet most peoples' taste, and an array of homemade desserts and pastries to choose from. But as an asvertised café, it is dissapointing to report that the cappuccinos being served need to be given a new breath of life, and none of the surprisingly expensive pastries are labeled with prices. The young waitresses at the counter were very pleasant, but the service from the main woman whom I took to be the owner, was notably slow and haphazard. No hours listed on yelp, ok. Google the name, find their facebook page, no hours listed, but facebook links to their blogspot. Blogspot says "Monday through Saturday, open til 6." Awesome! It's tough to find a place to get a coffee or something in the evening when you're driving back down south after skiing. Park out front, lights are on, door is unlocked, walk inside around 5:20, woman behind the counter says "oh sorry, we close at 5 today." Are you serious? Thanks for wasting our time. I have to be honest - it is tough for me give the small guy a bad review in this world of corporate nonsense; however, i have to express my disappointment in the cafe. The staff is extremely nice and helpful; however, I filled one of their bulk bags with something from the bulk aisle - you know where the dry flours, rice, and other grains are. To my astonishment the next day upon opening the package I sealed and dumping my grains into hot water to cook, there were brown living bugs all throughout it. That was one of the most disgusting food instances that has ever happened to me. I would imagine bulk bins of grains would have to be severely neglected for a long period of time to get infested with bugs. I hope they read this review and clean up their bulk aisle to avoid this happenening to others as they were very nice people. read more

Decent spot for breakfast or lunch right in the midst of the quaint main drag in Chester, right near the turnoff toward Ludlow and Okemo. I had a very nicely stuffed turkey sandwich served up on sourdough wheat with stuffing and cranberries. They roast their own meats, which not only gives the place a tremendous aroma but vastly improves the quality of the sandwiches. I'm not one for sweets but I did take note of an impressively mouth watering display of baked goods that I'm sure would please those of you who still eat such stuff. read more

I had the yogurt- super delicious with fresh apples and grapes. However the cappuccino was not very coffee-y. Tasted like warm milk only.

Excellent food and vegan friendly options. They do not advertise vegan because an employee told me "people think it's weird and won't buy the food if we say it's vegan." They should be proud of being one of the few places to offer truly vegan food. I'd like to see them expand their vegan offerings because the quality of texture, taste, and presentation was top notch! I would have given five stars because the food really is worth that, but the employees comments were just a bit of a turn off for me. I'm just being picky I guess. read more

We stopped there on the way down to NJ from Dartmouth College. Ordered a Blue Cheese Salad and 2 cheese steak sandwiches. They were not only gigantic but delicious as well. It was more than enough to feed 4 hungry adults.I am glad we found the place on our hunt for lunch. You can also buy local milk and eggs there along with some other goods. Funky place nice folks. The worst experience I have ever had at a café. It was pathetic, and primarily due to the owner. The girl who waited on me, who did not seem to know what she was doing, went back to make my meal leaving no one at the counter to wait on the long line of people. The owner came to help make lattes for people who came in after me. She did not greet the customers, even though the latte station is in front of the register. There were several people working but they were prepping or bringing cardboard downstairs. There was no structure, just utter chaos. I do not recommend this place, especially since the owner showed no concern for her customers. I work in the restaurant industry and couldn't imagine not helping or acknowledging my customers. We live 40 minutes away but still drive down very regularly for brunch. Everything that I've had here is amazing (so difficult to pick just one thing off the menu!). Also, there is a Waldorf playspace upstairs which makes going with your kiddos a serious treat (it's the only place I get to go and actually eat my meal while it's still hot!) i was looking forward to this cafe, and planned my whole day around it. As a local, I had heard rave reviews and wanted to see what all the hubbub was about. Boy, was I in for a surprise. When I walked in, I was the only one there and placed my order quickly, even though I hadn't decided what I wanted, as I sense the woman behind the counter was grumpy/impatient. As I waited, a crowd came in. Already a hot day, the throngs of tourists with screaming children descended and chaos ensued. When I received my order, the woman behind counter was again curt, quite literally tossing my change before walking away without a word. The smoothie was okay, but it had clearly been sitting on a counter and was warm and frothy as the contents separated. So much promise, so much disappointment. I wasn't impressed by my experience, but I encourage you to try for yourself -- maybe it was an off day. read more
