Went here for a quick small lunch before the NHL All Star Fan Fair. I ordered 4 dim sum plates. Turns out to be 2 more than I should have. The portions were huge and delicious! It took 3 bites to finish one Siu Mei. I thought it would be like other restaurants where it's one bite. Point being. You pay a little more but the portions are more than worth it. Plus it's a fine dining experience. Better than the overcrowded diners in Chinatown. And there are actually chunks of lobster in the lobster har gow. Very good food. read more

The lobster tasted like lobster gone bad. I thought it was just one piece but I took it home and couldn't eat any of it and threw it away. The Peking duck came with very paper thin pan cakes that were soft. We opted out of the second dish which would cost an additional $20 for the lettuce cups and duck stir fry. My friend just took the rest of the duck home. I'd say this was better than the lobster. There is better dim sum elsewhere for less money. The lobster was extremely disappointing But if you're in the mood, and nearby, it was not too busy. But honestly not my place We got extra pancakes $10 for that. Went there for a small reunion lunch, 6 of us, on January 20,2024. Food was above average at best for a town with great Chinese foods. We had the house special lobster that was deep fried with some batter, the "crispy" chicken that was not crispy, a streamed fish that was OK, a few other unmemorable dishes and bunch of drinks. They might sound good, but the dishes were, sadly, dry in both texture and taste. Our waitstaff was obviously showing her condescending ways with the obvious intention of doing a reverse psychology on us so that we tip her well. I normally tip at least 25% (I live in NYC where I'm accustomed to doing so), but didn't want any more unfriendly incident that could ensue and so I added an 18% tip which was about CAD473 on top of our $407 total bill. AVOID! I can deal with sour Chinese restaurant service, but the food doesn't warrant the prices. read more

Decent dim sum in downtown Toronto. Occupies the old Spring Rolls location at the Atrium on Bay. The physical space is spacious and comfortable. Online reservations can be made via OpenTable. Like others have mentioned, prices are a little more expensive than Chinatown or up North. However, you're paying for atmosphere and attentive service. Food-wise it was good. Nothing mind-blowing, but definitely better than average. Didn't order any of the fancy lobster dishes and mainly stuck with dim sum. The rice rolls were good and the lobster har gow were also a hit. I didn't notice anything special with the truffle siu mai. Lots of vegetarian options. Most of all, the service was attentive, quick and friendly. We had a 10 month old with us, who was intermittently throwing fits, and we didn't notice any dirty looks from the staff (or other customers for that matter). I would return. read more

Was coming here for dim sum and got attracted by the lobster menu so decide to give both a try! We got har gao, siew mai and xo har gao. They were pretty big and packed in shrimp! (Har gao) for lobster, they got a chef's recommendation, where you can have it cooked into different dishes, up to 3 different dish. We got ours cooked in salted egg and garlic vermicelli. I personally love the garlic vermicelli lobster most. You can taste the slight hint of sweetness in the lobster. Plus I like to know if my seafood is fresh so having it cooked that way, alows me to taste the freshness in them Lastly, you got to finish your meal with a dessert. Blown away by this modernized dim sum spot in Toronto that has an upscale ambience but stays true to the traditional dishes! Service is excellent, the staff all wear nice uniforms. Even the plates and cups are nice, everything matches including the tea pots. All the dishes were very good. The shrimp rice rolls are some of the best I've ever had, I love that there's veggies in it and the warm soy sauce bottle is a beautiful touch. The crispy pork rolls are my favorite, so flavorful and indulgent. There's a large variety of dim sum dishes and dishes from the kitchen, everything is fantastic. Great location next to eaton center...probably the only reason for the expensive price I can think of ... Cheapest small dish for dim sum started at 6.75..any vegetables dish is over 20 bucks. There's grungy dim sum and there's fancy dim sum, and both have their place depending on the occasion - Moon Palace is the latter. If you don't mind spending more, give it a try. A restaurant is best enjoyed in person to get the complete experience. The indoor decor is lovely, modern, spacious, with lots of comfy seating. The food is all made with quality ingredients. Vegetarian options are available. There are also a few tables outside with a shaded roof if you prefer to dine alfresco. Though the atmosphere is IMO better indoors and more relaxing. It's also conveniently at the heart of Downtown Toronto, you don't need to go uptown to get premium dimsum/Chinese food. Clientele is diverse. I would recommend this place to bring clients, special family gatherings/get togethers/date nights or for travellers. The food is also a bit more extra. Think- a dash of truffle in your siu mai, the elegant plating of their chow mein, enoki mushrooms and snow pea leaves or lobster added in your rice rolls. Most dishes just goes a bit above from your standard. Not only does the chow mein look good, but it's also one of the best I've had, so definitely worth it to come back for this only for about $20. More bang for the buck compared to their dim sum which alone is $6.5 for a small dish on weekends. I had my fair share of dim sum and enjoyed all the food coming out. You're definitely paying up for atmosphere here, I will be back on occasions that call for it. I always find it a pleasant bonus when the servers have the same background as the food served. The dinning area is nicely renovated and clean. The staff were super attentive, they kept refilling hot water for my tea. The price is above average compared to downtown joints, but not overly ridiculous. The tea charge is 1.8/ person. Glad to see some more foot traffic in this place now that restrictions are lifted. There is indoor and outdoor dining, and it is very clean. We ordered about 5 dim sum plates and yeung chow fried rice, which turned out to be too much for 2 people. The total was around $62 including tax, which is a little on the pricey end but all the food tasted great! Nothing was overly salty or oily if you know what I mean. And I'm glad the meat is not overdone with cornstarch like other restaurants - just some good ole Cantonese food :) I will be back! A tip is that they charge you for tea, even if you just order hot water so you might as well just get your money's worth by getting tea. read more

Visited Moon Palace while visiting Nathan Philips square, the location was easy to access and surprisingly has a lot of tables in the upper and lower floor. Getting seated took about 5min and we were sent to a table along with another patron. Sitting in the dinner hour we were provided a full menu and were provided dim sum menu on request. Service first of all was very slow here, it took about 15min to get our order in because it was difficult to get a server to return to the table, next our order sheet was lost by the kitchen so 15min after putting the order in we were provided a replacement order sheet and a series of apologies. Some not-so-common items, this location had the black sugar steamed sponge cake. The dim sum orders were slightly more generous. The pricing is quite higher than Markham options, but I can understand the location might have higher rent for the location- but the food tasted okay, but it wasn't amazing. Dishes and cutlery, I expected would be more fancy? I was expecting more elevated "china" not the chipped and worn plates and cups. The tea pot did have a nice strainer and the table had a cloth, the place setting was prepared with a wet nap that was branded. But servers were so hasted to reset tables and the velvet seats were not cleaned and the seat next to me I could see crumbs. Perhaps a portable vacuum? The washrooms were not accessible, they were in the lower floor down a series of stairs that were not easy to get down in addition a wet floor sign was placed as an excuse to not mop the floor- which presented a safety hazard- no sign will save you when a patron falls. When you approach the washroom it's so easy to bump into patrons , as I entered a patron with his daughter almost walked into me. Then when I was leaving a patron almost walked into me! The washroom was clean, but neither fancy or elegant, for the food price point, I expected a washroom attendant, instead counters were wet, tissue all over the floor. Overall the food was okay, the cost justified for the location. But with the price point there is a subtle expectation of fancy in the form of hospitality, food, service and overall venue. To be fair the website does not describe fine dine anywhere- but the pricing and elevated ingredients (like truffle oil) sort of convey this subtle expectation, so I walked in with a higher expectation :/ . Service was scattered chaos during my Saturday evening visit with my partner. Would return if I want dim sum without going to china town but not going to be going here to impress clients-it fell short to my experiential expectations based on the menu and price point. read more

Usually I'm unimpressed by the restaurants on Yonge and Dundas, but the dim sum here was really good quality and I'd definitely come back again. We were lucky to be able to walk in on New Year's Day but I also came right at opening to grab a table. If you're thinking of coming here, especially on a weekend I'd recommend making a reservation. This is a gem for Chinese dim sum and authentic cuisine in the downtown core. Located inside the atrium and easy to walk to and atrium parking available. Service is always fast and friendly. A/C wasn't turned on and the area we were seated in was quite hot. I did have to ask for them to turn on the Aircon. Service: 4/5 one terrible staff there, that has that kind of traditional cheap hk cafe attitude. Rushing you to order faster and giving you second hand tea. Everybody else was great though. Food: hit or miss depending on what you order. The things that are well made are very well made, but there are some things that are not so great. Durian pastry: 5/5 the exterior is nice and crispy and the inside has real durian. Great flavour, I like that even though this dish is warm the durian isn't too mushy (which is not easy to do). Fried shrimp spring roll: 5/5 great shrimp flavour, very crispy and freshly fried to order. Plus points for not being oily. BBQ pork pastry: 1/5 a little too oily and the pastry piece is way too thick. Filling to pastry ratio is 60% filling 40% pastry. The edges are super thick and 100% pastry. Think size wise, maybe half the size of what you would get at a Chinese bakery in terms of filling. Also on the menu they have this dish listed as a small, so should have charged $7 but they charged it as a medium when I paid. Check your receipts before you pay to make sure you get charged the correct amount. Lobster noodle: 5/5 lobster was super fresh and had very good flavour. Noodles were nice and crisp and the sauce that went with it was great as well. Shrimp and chive rice roll: 4/5 solid rice roll, the texture is nice and smooth, shrimp is fresh. I ordered some dim sum dishes such as steamed shrimp dumplings and steamed shrimp supreme sheung fun. One nice touch is that the food is stored in aluminium cointainers which is sealed which kept the food hot when I got home. The dim sum dishes were okay, but it was kind of bland. They should added some more seasoning. My main problems was the cost of the dishes. It cost $9 for the shrimp dumplings! It would have been worth the cost if the shrimp dumplings were awesome, but they were kind of bland. Would I go back? I might since I am in the area during weekends and I don't want to go to Chinatown to get some dim sum. read more

Had dinner with friends when visiting in Toronto. Absolutely fantastic dim sum. Some of the best that I have ever had.

As a fan of "yum cha", I always search for Cantonese Cuisine nearby. This restaurant is close to Eaton and therefore convenient for shoppers like me. The advantage of yum cha is that you can sit for hours and chat with friends. The ambiance is thus way more important than other restaurants. I enjoyed the experience there including the environment and service. Servants would introduce chef's recommendations as well as seasonal specials and then let us take our time. Every time when I finished my tea or needed any help, they always noticed and came quickly. In addition, I enjoyed all the food. They were perfect in color, aroma and taste. I would love to try more next time!! One little advice - don't forget to make your reservation online so you don't have to wait outside. FYI I am a big fan of "Yum Cha". Moon Palace is one of the relative new authentic Chinese fine dining cuisine in downtown Toronto.  It is located across Eaton Centre at The Atrium.  Parking is very convenient, as there is underground parking lot.  The decoration of the dining room is fancy and elegant.  Service is quick.  Ordered lobster meat dumpling, bbq pork crisps, peking duck, 4.5lbs big lobster 3 courses (steam lobster body meats with garlic, steam egg, and stir fry the claws and tail), salt and pepper abalone, and pumpkin lobster meat soup.  I would say all are perfect and easily this is my favorite restaurant from now on.  It overtakes Yu seafood immediately after the meal.  Finally finish up with Mango Pomelo Sago for dessert.  I highly recommend everyone should make a trip to give a try.  I cannot wait till next week because I will go again for dinner! read more

I had doubts since I genuinely think anything near dundas square wouldn't be so authentic it would just be tourist trap but my experiences here proved that I was wrong. We ordered the following: 1.Beef ball: it's very delicious I hated other restaurants when they put peas in the beef ball, here they don't and the sauce is a little spicy but it's amazing 2. Chasiu pastry: it's huge and so filling, the layers and layers in the pastry are so beautiful. 3. Chicken wings: crispy and juicy. Extremely flavorful too. 4. Ribs: didn't really like it since it was mostly super fatty. 5.egg yolk bun: absolutely NOT. Highly recommend ordering one of their set menus, in this case, we ordered their lobster special for four people. It was a lot of delicious food, especially for four people. Nevertheless, the seafood was cooked beautifully, and made from fresh seafood. They will show you the lobster to confirm that it's fresh before making it. BOTTOM LINE: Dim sum + lobster/scallops/truffles = omnomnomnom! Everyone knows that the best dim sum is in Markham/Richmond Hill, and while downtown has its fair share of options, they tend to fall into the budget or fancy category, and Moon Palace is definitely the latter. [This review is just for their dim sum, I've yet to actually come for their lobster dinners, though that is on my to-try list!] Here are a few highlights: LOBSTER HAR GOW: You gotta try this once, if only to see the lovely pink dumpling wrap, and although they do pack in a good amount of lobster, my taste buds aren't refined enough to parse out the lobster flavours. :S "REGULAR" HAR GOW: The litmus test of all dim sum restos, they do a fantastic and meaty shrimp dumpling! They pass in spades, and I personally preferred the shrimp ones over the lobster ones. TRUFFLE SIU MAI: They love their truffles here, and it works really well in their take on the traditional siu mai. A must-get. VARIOUS CHEUNG FUN: Sadly, as much as I love scallops, it's not worth it. Basically, soy sauce will just nuke the delicately flavoured scallops. I haven't tried the lobster one, but I worry you'd run into the same issues. Instead, get the "standard" BEEF/ENOKI one. FRIED RICES: I would highly recommend their fried rices. The TRUFFLE FRIED RICE was really well done and flavourful, but if you wanted something more traditional, then the SEAFOOD FRIED RICE will probably be more to your liking. BBQ PORK CRISPS: Could be crispier. :P These were the highlights. Most of the other dim sum I tried were also decent (e.g., CURRIED BABY OCTOPUS, BEEF TRIPE, TURNIP CAKE, etc.) but they did get overshadowed but some of the other fancier selections. Yowza this place is pricey! The food is pretty good, service is efficient and ambiance is fancy. But all that isn't worth those prices. My wife and I went here for dinner and got: - Lobster combo special: Right now it's $29/pound (versus regular price of $35). They serve it in 3 courses, though since my wife and I got a lobster on the smaller side (3 instead of 5 pounds), they advised us to just do 2 courses. One course was lobster fried Hong Kong style, and the other course was fried rice with lobster flavour. The rice was tasty and reminded me of ones you get in Hong Kong. The fried lobster was just ok - good chunks, good quality, but prefer the tastiness and cook of other spots in the city. For that price, was expecting it to be the best and it wasn't. - Dimsum: We got shrimp dumplings and veggie dumplings. Shrimp was super plump, protein-to-casing ratio for both were good, served fresh and piping hot, this was obviously good quality dumplings. But at $9 for L, $10 for XL and $12 for SP, those are some really pricey dumplings. Overall, it was a fun experience trying Moon Palace. At the time of our visit, their front door was locked and we had to enter the mall and enter the restaurant from the side door, which confused me a little for the first time. They do not have a large menu but things are generally good. We had Shrimp Dumplings, Sticky rice wrapped with lotus leaves, Chicken Feet, Shrimp rice noodle rolls and a Congee. How I became Duke in two different Toronto downtown establishments in my three-day visit, part one. I was visiting my sister at the UHN Rehab center. Come dinner time, we decided to order some take-out to eat in the cafeteria. My brother-in-law said he found this place that offers "lobsters 3-5 lbs, two dishes" for $40. So right off the bat, we know he clearly was mistaken - how can a lobster that has a RANGE of 67% difference in weight, have the same price, right? (But that's another story...) Sure enough, it was a per lb price. But we found another option, with lobster, which was only $58 (CAD). So he ordered it and off I went to pick it up, since it's a 10-minute walk away. Funny though - they didn't ask him for payment or even a name! Lo and behold, upon my arrival, they said - we didn't put your order in, cuz we didn't, um, hear you clearly on the phone that you were ordering this. WHAT!!! I asked how long would I have to wait? 10-15 minutes. Just on principle I walked out. A day later, "all's forgiven", and my B.I.L. all but insisted on ordering from them again. I caved in. When he put in the order, I asked him to ask them how come they are not even asking for his name? Oh! (they replied) - we know who you are, cuz we have caller ID!!! That, of course, begs the question of why there was an issue with the order the day before. To (further) add insult to injury, they said the price is now something like $10 higher - a price hike within a day, huh! No turning back at that point, I suppose. To be fair, the meal itself was fine. Dinner comprised 3 courses: lobster with chow mein, sweet and sour pork, and stir-fried mixed veg. We'd been told the lobster with the chow mein would be 'less than a lb'. As it turned out (and you don't have to be a PhD in lobster anatomy to know this), it's a case where they had a bunch of lobsters chopped up ready for this dish. On the plus side, the lobster portion - different DNA notwithstanding - was well witin/beyond what was promised. They also did the chow mein the proper way. For the uninitiated, Cantonese chow mein is really deep-fried thin noodles, topped with a sauce. Moon Palace did the right thing, putting the sauce in a different container, thereby preserving the crispiness of the fried noodles. As well, the other two dishes were up to snuff. I'm not a sweet and sour pork fan, but this one I could find no fault with, since the tart vinegar was perfectly balanced by a sweetness, and the pork pieces were fresh, properly coated and fried. Third dish... no self-respecting Cantonese food afficionado would be caught dead ordering something called "Stir-fried mixed vegetables" if truth be known, but since this one is off of a set menu, what can you do? It far exceeded my low expectations, with fresh ingredients and fantastic variety of no less than a dozen different veggies (check out especially the 3 different types of mushrooms, as in button, king, and shitake). So from a food point-of-view, when they finally came through after asking the customer to jump through endless hoops of drama, I'd have given it 4.5 stars. But the frustration of the two nights, their inability to keep their menu up-to-date, and their "couldn't-care-less" attitude toward patrons*, three stars is about all they deserve even in these generous covid times. * My B.I.L. told me when he picked up the food that he heard the customer in front of him tell the staff, "Can you at least try to appear to be nice to customers?" :-D read more
