One of my colleagues suggested that we meet at Moonshine for some after-work cocktails.  We met there on a Thursday evening, and decided to sit on the outside rear patio; it seemed like a great option because it's covered and lets you be outside without actually sitting on the street.  They also have indoor seating options which I look forward to checking out another time. We started off with some cocktails, which turned out to be tasty with a kick like a mule.  We ordered two more while we contemplated the menu, and I for one was very glad that I Ubered here ;-) Tip: Now that I'm a Moonshine "veteran", I heartily recommend both the Blind Mule and the Bourbon Slush cocktails. Now let's talk about the food! After a couple of cocktails, dinner seemed like a great idea, so we got some recommendations and ended up sharing a couple of really excellent selections.  Moonshine's menu has some great variety - it looks like there's something there for you, whatever your tastes are.  We went with a Rib Eye steak (beautifully marbled, cooked perfectly, and wonderfully seasoned) and the Chicken & Waffle combo.  While both dishes were first-tier, my favorite was the Chicken & Waffles.  The chicken was juicy, tender, and cooked perfectly; the waffles were simply incredible! Service was efficient and attentive without ever making us feel rushed.   Our drink refills were timely, our mains were delivered very quickly, and the dessert we eventually ordered was followed (without us having to ask) by the check.  Moonshine turned out to be a great place for drinks, food, and conversation - I look forward to returning to check-out more of their menu selections! read more

I come here each year at a minimum for their Thanksgiving feast and boy is it the cat's meow! The staff here are always so charming and nice. I have yet to get a bad visit and I have actually considered it may happen since I come so much. Their food is as amazing as their drinks but not to be outdone by their staff! Definitely a must-go when you're in Austin. My friends recommended this place and it's a short walk from their hotel, the residence inn. Their drink selection includes moon-shine and a ton of bourbon/whiskey options. Beware of the moon-shine as it will put some hairs on your chest. The peach one is my weapon of choice. Food wise, it's southern food meaning lots of butter and richness in their foods. For apps, the cathead biscuits are some of the best biscuits you'll ever eat. Honey butter adds a nice touch although I found the preserves to be sweet to the nth degree. Pretzels & pimento is also tasty and easy to eat. For my main course, I ordered the cornflake chicken salad and a side of the baked mac&cheese. The salad was three pieces of fried chicken served over a bed of greens with avocado and a nice honey mustard dressing. I should've asked for more dressing as it gave the fried chicken a nice sweet compliment to its crunch. The mac&cheese screams southern with the jalapeño & bacon plus the breadcrumb topping. All delicious. They set up their dining area to handle COVID-19 by having tables separated for social distancing. It felt more intimate and easy for us to hear each other due to the crowd volume. Very likely it'll this way going forward. But all the more reason to visit here. read more

Moonshine Grill is a great spot in downtown Austin. It's right around the corner from multiple hotels. It's definitely walking distance, but you could probably park nearby too. We happened upon this place while walking and the wait was pretty short so we grabbed a bite! It was delicious! I had the Waterloo cocktail which was super refreshing. For my meal I had the Hoss Hot sandwich was was fantastic, not spicy at all though so don't be fooled! I also LOVED the popcorn as the complimentary starter. Huge fan!!! read more

Sunday brunch there is always a wait, so no biggie. We arrived, and she said 1.5 hour wait, but we only waited about 35-40 minutes. It is a huge place with lots of seating, and the staff is nice. When seated, you are greeted by a bowl of complimentary popcorn which was tasty. I ordered the BLT w/o arugula. It was a hefty and hearty sandwich that was partnered with potatoes and what tasted like homemade ketchup. The sandwich was bomb, but the potatoes aren't anything special. I had a margarita and a peach moonshine. My daughter had the chicken and waffles; it was enough to feed 2 for sure. The chicken was nicely coated with a crispy outer shell. Some of the chicken was dry. It almost looked like they over baked it then fried it. The waffles and big and fluffy and tastes like pillowy sweet cornbread. The meal is accompanied by syrup and white gravy. My husband got the smoked salmon and Johnny cakes. I didn't taste his, but he said it was good. They also have a pet friendly patio. Alright what do I think of Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill. It's is definitely a happening place in Austin. The food portions are huge which is right on bar for the price. I will say the restaurant is very clean and has very nice employees. Unfortunately I did not like my meal when I was there but the ladies could tell and they took it off my bill. I would def come back however I would have to choose something diff. If you go be prepared to wait it is a packed and happening place. Also if you have a hard time seeing in dim lighting bring your glasses and trim your phone flashlight on. It's very dim in this place. read more

In town for work. Needed a quick walkable place for dinner. This place was so busy! I ended up here on a Saturday and it was a mix of locals, conference attendees, and people ready to party. I was solo, so I hung by the front and poached a seat at the bar. There is a second outdoor bar that I looked at, but it was full too. 30+ min wait for tables at 6:45. Ordered an old fashioned, they have a great bourbon menu. Asked the bartender what her favorite item on the menu is: the jalapeño hanger steak. It was so good, I forgot to grab a photo. Seriously, I live in Vegas, and this was one of the best bites I've had in a few months. It's steak and potatoes only, so if you're really hungry, grab a soup or side. Steak is grilled , sliced, and sauced in a demi with a chimichurri and roasted half jalapeño. Do yourself a favor and cut little jalapeño bites to accompany your steak. Yes! I may go order this again while here! Potatoes were creamy and a perfectly pairing. Ordered bread pudding to go, also a suggestion from my server... flavor is there, but it's super dense. I recently arrived in Austin and was looking for dinner, doing some searching I found Moonshine. I looked at their menu online and was interested, especially given their spirits menu. I arrived with my service animal and was quickly seated, they brought my dog a bowl of water, appreciated in the Austin heat. I had no issues with bringing my service animal which helped make a great impression. I was alone and asked my server (Jessica) for some dinner recommendations, she suggested one of the things they are known for is their Chicken Fried Steak, which has a chipotle white gravy. I was intrigued and ordered that with green beans. She also had some great suggestions from the bourbon menu. My dinner arrived and I was astounded by the size of the meal, the picture will show it best. The chicken fried steak was tender and perfectly cooked, I really liked the gravy, and the chipotle added a bit of Austin flair. I liked it so much they should sell it. The gravy has just enough to enhance the flavor without being overwhelming, perfect. If I was going to eat Southern cuisine I added the green beans with bacon, I was expecting the soft green beans with some hunks of bacon and onion, traditional Southern. What I got was fresh green beans with a bit of crunch to them that were pan-fried with bits of real bacon and thinly sliced onions, the end result was incredibly tasty and fresh. I wrapped up dinner with a bourbon-mixed drink and Jessica suggested I add a moonshine floater, why not? She had made great recommendations for the entire meal. The floater definitely enhanced an already awesome drink. The only thing I would like is that they do not up charge for a large single ice cube for the bourbon, but that is so minor. If I can I will return before I leave Austin, I highly recommend this delicious restaurant with a fantastic staff. read more

Upon arriving to Austin this was one of the first spots that some friends and I decided to stop at, and without giving it much thought we chose it based off the name alone. I will say this, they were lots of people there so the servers had their hands full, but one thing the guy who was serving us really knew his stuff . It's as if he wrote the menu himself because he knew that thing inside and out and was very helpful in ordering. I didn't need much help as I already knew I was getting the Impossible Burger with Jalapenos and he talked me into to getting the sweet potato tots, which I've never had before. They tasted great! I'm not much of a tater tot person, but I LOVE anything sweet potato, so these were very tasty. I'd recommend them. Each table comes with complimentary popcorn which was very nice because who doesn't love popcorn! One friend ordered the stuff rainbow trout and some sort of chicken salad which both were good. I have visited Moonshine a fee times now. Maybe just not my ideal environment. I will say this. The service was great. The young lady who take attended to us was magnificent. The food has good presentation, but lacks attention to detail. I ordered the salisbury steak. Mashed with the steak on top and gravy. I get it, its a comfort food, but if its a comfort food, a little more gravy on the side with a dinner roll or two would be better. You need to be able to sop up that gravy... My buddies had a seafood type plate and the bread was just on top (bowl) and well, its in there and gets soggy and nobody like a soggy bread before the plate even gets to you. The service started off with some free popcorn, which had paprika and some other spices. For appetizers, we got the fried green tomatoes which was crusted and came with pimento cheese--a MUST order. The salad was decent but nothing mind boggling. The porkchop with the mac and cheese--delicious, as well as the trout which was covered in savory crust and packed with stuffing. Decided to take a break from bbq and try something different. After a quick yelp search decided on this place and glad we did. It was an easy walk from our hotel in downtown Austin so that was a plus. They start you off with popcorn which is something different and nice. The popcorn was jazzed up with what I believe to be garlic and paprika and was amazing. I got the old fashioned and wife got a drink called the fiddler which was whiskey spiced up with jalapeño. Both were really really good. For an app we got the deviled eggs. Got to say not impressed. They used a lot of mustard and neither me or the wife cared for them. For a main course we shared the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. It was absolutely enough for both of us and must say it was delicious. We also shared a side salad. Called on Thursday 5:30pm and there was no wait for the patio so the hostess told me to come in. I was there 15 min later and another hostess (didn't get her name but she had a boy cut haircut) told me there's a 30 min wait. When I told her the waitress who answered my call said there was no wait, she then lectured me twice that I should have made reservations. Thought that was rude (before this, I've only ever thought Austinites were super sweet) - my first time here and the waitress on the phone didn't mention I should make a reservation twice. Shouldn't need to be lectured at the host stand and again when seated. Luckily another person came by and said we could be seated right away and luckily, the rest of the experience was fine. We ordered the chicken fried steak and jalapeño hanger steak. From the photos, I didn't realize how ginormous the chicken fried steak was! It's the size of my forearm and can easily feed 3-4 people. It was my first time eating chicken fried steak and it wasn't bad. I'm not a friend food type girl but it was decent. I could only do a few bites as it was heavy. The jalapeño hanger steak was right up my alley. You have to eat it with the jalapeño; it's the perfect combo. I only wish they gave 2 jalapeños. The mashed potatoes also went perfectly! The popcorn, cornbread and drinks were also good. The Old Fashioned was smooth and the pink drink wasn't too sweet. The waiter was much more pleasant than that hostess and the ambiance outside was lovely. I love that it's dog friendly and my dog was allowed to sit in my lap at the table (some places only allow dogs on the floor but my dog is a lap dog). They also brought a dog bowl. Moonshine is absolutely amazing. It's a great mix of southern food. The jalapeño hanger steak, pork ribs, pork chop, and burgers are great. A lot of people like their catfish too. Moonshine has an amazing atmosphere as it feels really cozy. My party arrived at around 6pm on a weeknight and were seated right away. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mac and cheese. The chicken fried steak had a nice crunch, and the meat was tender. However, the gravy was pretty salty, so I wasn't a big fan of it. Overall, the food was not necessarily the best, but I would be back for the excellent service and great atmosphere. read more
