Great local fun restaurant with great food and specials! Great chicken fingers , oysters, and other family and bar food

Had a great time! Fried mushrooms were delicious and hamburger was unusual and excellent. Pleasantly surprised.

Awesome place in Memphis. I had a burger, but they also have steaks that are very affordable. More than that, the atmosphere is quiet and the wait staff is among the best I've experienced anywhere. Though I went alone, it would be a great spot for a date, or really any occasion. read more

I used to like to go to this restaurant because of the Chris Bell/Big Star memorabilia and relationship, but our meal the other night was SO BAD, that we will never return. First our waiter was horrible. In fact, we wondered if he was a waiter at all because he was so bad. He was simply unconcerned about serving us. I ordered a Mortimer's burger medium. It was supposed to have spinach and artichoke on it. But it came raw and without the spinach and artichoke dip. I asked the waiter where it was and he nonchalantly said "under the cheese." I then lifted the cheese to show him there wasn't anything there but raw hamburger. When he finally returned - after everyone else was finished - there was scant spinach and artichoke dip on top of a still raw hamburger. When he brought the bill, he also brought me a box without asking but assumed I wanted to take it home because I hadn't eaten it. Hmmmm... there are too many OTHER GREAT restaurants in Memphis to waste my time and money here. Although I still love Big Star. The one star is for Big Star. read more

This restaurant inspire me to become a mystery shopper because it was just terrible! Food sucks service sucks and they weren't even busy. The waitress had the audacity to circle the gratuity amounts that should have been added to the bill! HOW RUDE! PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE AND NEVER EAT THERE! Being a lifelong Memphian, I hold this place close to my heart. In that, it is our little secret. The fact that you are reading this means you have very good connections in Memphis. Connections who know great food and great service. The reason for the Yelp is they truly did save the day for my Goddaughter's baby shower dinner. After Pancho's White Station discarded our reservation (see review) Mark and the staff set us ((7) up with the best table. On very short notice on a Friday night. The Food: with a menu that truly has anything a tastebud could fathom it is best to bring friends, so you can order and share as many of these fabulous foods. Fried pickles that can't be beat. NOT pickle chips PICKLES. Oysters galore, Amberjack, Snapper Pontchartrain and the ribeye with the loaded baked potato are just a few of my favorites. They have a kid's menu as well, for well behaved kid's. If you have any doubt as to whether your kid's are well behaved then they probably aren't The Service: On this particular evening everyone was at the top of their game from the start. I am not sure who answered the phone but she was very pleasant as she quickly arranged our table and confirmed without having to put me on hold. Our server Madeliene was kind, knowledgeable of the menu and very professional, Getting all of our order drinks, apps,salads and entree's so we could enjoy each other's company without being interrupted. Making sure our food came out in sequence and on time, all the while and almost invisibly keeping our drinks full and always smiling. Mark Esterman (bartender/manager) makes one hell of a cabernet and the crown and coke was of very high standards as well. Being there for as long as I can remember, 20 years???? He is always smiling, if not just laughing. You can't help but feel better as soon as you walk in the door. A good man with a great ear who can keep a secret. If I have friends in town Mortimer's is a must. If ever there is any doubt as to where we want to go for a great dinner at a reasonable price it has to be...Mortimer's. read more

Moved in down the street a few months ago and we've driven by this place daily but never gone in due to the run-down exterior. Tonight, however, we decided to give it a whirl. The parking lot is always busy, so why not, right? It was just as divey on the inside, but the atmosphere is actually kind of run-down chill cool. It felt like very much a local joint only natives frequent. The food was all delicious! We got the seafood stuffed mushrooms (awesome!) and the snapper ponchitran which rocked! If you like oysters and are in Memphis, you can't find a better place to eat them. They are large, fresh and the best reason to visit.

The service was good however the ribeye was horrible! Couldn't even chew it! A $30 steak and I'm still hungry. It looked like it was cut wrong. The waiter didn't even take it off the bill. I didn't want to complain with my company at the table but a good waiter would had picked up on it. read more

Food isn't good....we were very disappointed! We both ordered a fish dish and the founder stuffing was terrible, hardly edible. The red snapper dish came barely warm, the seafood on top looked like it had been cooked hours ago. Basically it tasted like Sysco food and for the price we expected more. :( I returned the red snapper dish because I just couldn't eat cold seafood... I decided not to order anything to replace it, felt like we would just get disappointed even more. The atmosphere was nice but don't go for the food. read more

I just tried to eat at Mortimer's Restaurant. The red beans and rice platter was awful. I had to add salt and hot sauce to make it taste anything but bland. And on top of that there were roaches crawling over the table! I do not recommend this filthy place to any one. read more

Ok so we have enjoyed the crab legs about 3 times in the last few months. All you can eat $24.99. They were soooo good. Go tonight and the price was $19.99 for a pound. That was ok but the crab legs were soooo bad. They were stuck to the,inside of the shell. Don't even think you could pull a nice piece out. It was little pieces. No fun at all. So disappointed with Mortimers!!!!!!! read more

Well, it started with the dirty silverware and went downhill from there. It was a horrible dining experience to the point where after a while, we just laughed because it was like we were being punked. Our seemingly inexperienced server's response to hearing that we had dirty silverware was a very smiley, "Oh, ok, I'll get you some more. Our dishwasher broke and I think they washed things another way" and she flew off after taking 2 of the 6 sets of silverware to replace. Breakfast special still on the board from breakfast, so obviously wasn't available when I ordered it. When a drink didn't arrive, we only found out they were out of it when we asked where it was. Our food took about 45 minutes, longer than some people near us that sat about 20 minutes after we did, and when it arrived, all of the orders had something wrong. The wrong sandwich, three burgers cooked completely wrong, the wrong salad,and something that was supposed to have shrimp on top had one tiny hard shrimp on it. And the entrees didn't come out together, so things were getting cold waiting for the rest. About 5 minutes after learning that the orders were all wrong, our server came back all peppy and smiling and said, "So, how is everything?" Really? We never saw a manager, and the only person that finally apologized was our server, who told us that there was no kitchen manager that night and it was just the three cooks in the kitchen. And we're pretty sure one of them was outside talking on the phone and wiping sweat off of his face onto his hands and shirt. Of course we can't be sure this was a cook, but he definitely worked there and wasn't a busser or a server. Nobody seemed to be in charge at all. They weren't even that busy, so that can't be the reason for all of this. I think they need to have an all-staff meeting and make some serious changes to get themselves together or they aren't going to be around for much longer. read more

Mortimer's is my go to place. Very casual atmosphere. Good daily specials. I've been multiple times and I can't say that I've ever really had a bad meal. Love the oyster specials and their fried crab claws. read more

Watch for uncooked or undercooked food here. A friend and I have received undercooked chicken and dumplings before at Mortimer's, and today I was served undercooked fish with cold side orders. Both chef and owner declared that they were fine. The waitstaff is very friendly, but with that kind of leadership and dangerous food, go somewhere else. This place might make you sick! read more

This restaurant has been going downhill over the last year or so. We used to visit regularly, but tonight was a good example of how things have deteriorated. We ordered a very simple sandwich order, waited FOREVER for it to be delivered, never saw our waiter while we were waiting. The food finally came; the order was wring, sent it back. They got it wrong TWICE, and the waiter seemed totally unconcerned, was too busy massaging the shoulders of the women at the bar. We left 0 tip and won't be back! read more

Love the bar. My favorites in order are 1. Trout Amandine 2. Shrimp Louie Salad 3. Tamales. 4. Italian spinach. Aside from the tamales it's easy to diet or eat low carb here. Terrific bar with efficient, personable staff. read more

Forget Huey's. This place has, by far, the tastiest burger in the city of Memphis--and has since it opened in the early 1980s. Same goes for their potato skins...unbelievably good. read more

The crab legs here are awesome! On Sunday nights they offer 1 lb of crab legs, red potatoes, corn on the Cobb and salad for 19.99. It was all definitely worth it and the service was perfect. Rustic little place; Highly recommend this one! read more

I found this restaurant from an article in Memphis Flyer. First, I got very good service. The food was very good. I had the stuffed with smoked Gouda cheese double hamburger. I am going back shortly to try their Gumbo and their cheese and sausage plate. They always have Po' Boys on their menu. I visit New Orleans LA often and I sure miss the food down there. I hope this restaurant comes close. My only minor complaint is they are not open on the weekends for lunch. I was not aware that they had Cajun items on their menu or I would have been there sooner. read more

i love this place.....it is one of the few civilized cafes in Memphis. .it is quiet, classy and friendly..it is run by adults for adults..no whiny loud talking, texting miserable millenials, thank god.!!......this is the kind of place where you can find solace in a good mixed drink and a platter of red snapper and a baked potato. the waitress will honestly give you straight up tips on which dishes are favorites and which ones are somewhat less favorite ..all my food there has been very enjoyable......i hope it stays open for a long time...anyone who puts this place down, i am sure they will be happier at Taco Bell... read more

Had a strange lunch experience here. Three lunch specials were offered; chicken, roasted pork with dressing, broiled tilapia. I ordered the roasted pork with dressing and two sides. What came to the table was a dark meat covered in dark brown gravy (no dressing) and the two sides. I thought it looked odd for pork, but it was my first time to Mortimer's, so what do I know. It was beef covered in brown gravy. No time to start over, so I ate it. I must say, it was good, but not even close to what I ordered--beef wasn't even one of the lunch specials. The strange part is when I mentioned it to my server upon paying. (the bill showed "beef special"). She said I got what I ordered. I was sitting right next to a wall plaque showing the three specials: chicken, pork, tilapia. I pointed to "roast pork w/dressing" and said I ordered that and got no dressing. She insisted that they offered two meats and that I got what I ordered. HUH? Beef comes from a cow, pork from a pig--I do know the difference!! But beef wasn't even offered on that portion of the luncheon menu; I rechecked the menu I was given on my way out. The whole thing was strange. Just know that if you order pork, you might get beef....but they will insist you got what you ordered. read more
