The cashiers here are rude. Usually it's a basic rude that I can ignore, because unfortunately this market is convenient for my commute. But tonight the cashier put my watermelon on top of the berries and spent her time showing the manager photos on Facebook. When I asked for my receipt I got an eye roll and she tossed the receipt in my direction. No more. I don't care how convenient they are, I will walk across the park to Best Market. Blergh. Don't get any of the prepared foods i.e. sushi from the back- I've heard too many scary things. Expensive but convenient. You know it's bad when Whole Foods is a steal (think box of crackers for seven dollars). Down the street Westside Market seems to offer a nicer experience but is also pricey. I hate shopping here. It's overpriced, and it's always a negative experience. They're in business because they're convenient and stock a convenient variety of food when you don't have time to shop elsewhere. PROS: Decent selection of basic essentials, good fruit, open 24 hours. CONS: The checkout experience is awful. Staff seems they would rather be *anywhere* else but here - which makes you feel the same way. The cashiers avoid eye contact, they talk to each other and almost never you, and checkout always takes longer than it seems it should take. I always hate shopping here - combined with how expensive their prices are, it's a pretty rotten experience. Again, I only go there when I need fresh fruit and a few other items, and don't have time to go to Fairway or want to mess with the gourmet but good Westside Market. If I don't need fruit, I prefer to go to the convenience store deli on 123rd and Broadway, which has a good selection too and is much friendlier to deal with. If there is a category for grumpiest place in New York City, this Morton Williams should be number one. Even before the pandemic hit the city this place is full of employees who have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. I have not had one positive interaction at this place... Groceries have been flung at me and dirty looks have been given when I don't move fast enough to gather my items. Prices are so jacked up-Probably to take advantage of the wealth of the Barnard and Columbia students who buy essentials there which is unfortunate for grad students. there is no discount unlike c- town on 125th which does a 10% Columbia discount which is too bad bc it's further out of the way. I'm starting to wonder about the condition they store their food. I have bought three spoiled products from there in the last month. To be more specific, two jars of jelly COVERED in mold, and a package of cookie dough that had BUGS in it. Seriously? Also, their staff is not friendly at all. I have probably been to this grocery store 15 times because of its convenient location. Every time I regret it and leave in a bad mood. I don't think a cashier has ever once acknowledged my presence or looked at me while ringing me out. The only interaction is handing me my change without looking at me or talking to me. Every so often, you can stumble upon an amazing deal here (e.g; 69 cents per Snapple...my favorite deal of all time). Everything else is a bit more expensive than you'd find n a standard supermarket chain like Shop Rite or Stop & Shop, but I find that Morton Williams is best used as a place to go if you run out of something unexpectedly or need to pick up a couple of ingredients last-minute. The hot food section is pretty cheap. After trying just about every dish there this summer (rotisserie chicken, BBQ Ribs, wontons, turkey...and everything else), I have finally accepted that there are no hidden gems. It's all so downright mediocre that it hurts...but that's to to be expected at that price. Very salty as well, so watch out for that. Don't bother with the sushi, M2M is a couple of steps down the block and offers much cheaper, better quality rolls. read more

I think this place is pricey. I come because it is convenient but I get such poor service, you would not believe it. At one point, they had difficulty accepting my credit card. I stayed for 40 minutes as they tried to figure it out. Wow. I am shocked. Get your stuff together. Please! It is so expensive, good grief. Everytime I come, I ask myself, why do I come? RUDE STAFF. You do NOT talk to customers like that. Customers don't talk to you like that either. It's mutual respect. Please, mind your manners here. Especially the people communicating with the customers. Where is that good social interaction? (1) Cooked foods - I have had their half chicken with yellow rice. It was expensive and not delicious at all. The rice is really not good. It was so dry. I like my rice fluffy and warm. This was not good. I remember the price to be something like $11.99. I would not pay $7 for this meal. The chicken was better. Still not great, but better. It was also lukewarm. I am being generous here. It was lukewarm at best. Maybe I came too late into the night. I do pull all nighters after all. I need to nourish my body. Don't nourish it with this I have learned. Their sandwiches are ~eh. The sushi, I had the brown rice with avocado. I love avocado. I also like the health benefits of brown rice. It was good. Not $7.99 good though. No way. Go somewhere else. Don't get their cooked food. It's bland. (2) Fresh produce and fruits - At club meetings, I get their fruit. I love fruit. It's good fruit. Hard to go wrong with fruit. I get free fruit bowls and I love them because I rarely buy fruit because it is expensive! I love their pineapple. The produce and fruit are overpriced though. Would not pay if up to me. When you walk out, there is a man a few blocks down selling produce from his little cart. You can get $1/lb grapes. Buy that instead and save your wallet a little heartache. Don't make it go flat! (3) Other foods - I have purchased stroopwaffles here. They were too tempting. I wish I didn't. They were $2.99 for 2 little things. They remind me of home so I had to do it. You, you don't have to do it. Don't do it. I also got Tate's Cookies here for too expensive. But that was before I learned the ways around Columbia. Now that I know my way, I will not be coming back to purchase more. This is a quick and good convenient place especially for freshmen who are just coming in and don't yet know how to handle their money. To further compound this, the store always seems full of people when I go. As a result, I feel rushed, cramped, and generally unhappy when I'm in here. They are there during the day shift . Specifically older woman with glasses. She is consistently in rude and unpleasant. This place is minuscule! You feel like a gigantic Alice in Wonderland squeezed into this incarnation of a supermarket. The aisles make you wonder if it's your waist size or the supermarket. For a miniature supermarket, the prices are outlandish. Notice how the more I repeat the word "supermarket" the more it decreases in value? One time, I was late to teaching a class, so I dodged off the 1 train and ran into Morton Williams to grab a Luna Bar. Unfortunately, I left my wallet in my office in Queens, so I had one dollar to my name. A Luna Bar here costs like $1.75!!! That's 75% more than the normal price in any other grocery establishment! In my haste and consternation, I did the desperate thing of flipping and shaking my bag over the conveyor belt like my life depended on it and luckily found a good sum of change to accommodate this 75% distortion of reality. read more

This Morton Williams is right across the street from Columbia University's college walk on 116th, thus it is prime location for both Barnard and Columbia students. When you enter, you will most certainly see a multitude of college students shopping. The prices are kind of high, but it should be expected as it is a grocery store in Manhattan near a college campus. That being said, there are always deals going on. My occasional favorites include "5 for $5.00 for Chobani greek yogurt," and "2 for $6.00" for Tropicana orange juice. They have an expansive collection of frozen yogurt and ice creams. Their produce section is a bit lacking but it is expected due to the size of the store. Their workers are definitely friendly- they have on many occasions ran downstairs to look for an item that wasn't on the shelf (they usually get it). They have a great selection of grab-and-go items like pre-packaged sandwiches, Chinese food, and more. Definitely a favorite when I need something quick! read more

I really only shop of MW when I am A - needing some last minute items for dinner when I get home from work off the 1 train at 116th street and B - when I am coming back from the Columbia Gym and do not feel like walking 10 blocks South to Westside and then 20 blocks back north to my house. I need to give MW credit where credit is due - the place is clean, well lit, and I do not feel dirty just stepping foot in there (same can not be said for Met just around the corner of my house). I do need to complain that the aisles are too small - something that I have come accustomed to while living in New York. I am from the suburbs of San Francisco, so I am used to huge sprawling Safeways with aisled big enough for three carts at once. The fruit and produce are overpriced frankly not that good. Everytime I have come into MW hoping to get an avocado for the night, all the ones on the shelf are rock hard. Now, i am not sure that is from the fact that they are being refrigerated (hello, who does that?) or from the fact that they are just not ripe. The cashiers are really disgruntled and rude as well - something, AGAIN, that I have noticed being a trend in New York City, small grocery stores. I do not think it would hurt anyone to smile once a while? One big plus - Sabra hummus. Mmmm. Even though people do not like it, it is not a trip to MW without being accosted by the homeless man outside begging for food and money. I always try to give a little something to him as I pass - I went to school in Santa Cruz, CA so I am used to seeing homeless people beg for food and money outside of grocery stores. every evening, as I walk briskly to 116th & Broadway, eager to board the 1 train that will whisk me away from Morningside Heights, I am tempted to dash into this supermarket and get groceries for dinner. occasionally I give into this temptation. seems so convenient, half a block from the train! WRONG. there is nothing convenient about a market where the aisles are so narrow that when someone barrels toward you with their basket, determined to get past you to snag that box of overpriced granola, you have no choice but to back out of the aisle. and then there's the disrespect for coconut milk. Not, in my opinion, an obscure foodstuff. in fact it's a staple ingredient for many asian dishes. At Morton Williams I found it (after 20 minutes of searching and asking the staff, who seem as confused and frazzled by the store's haphazard quality as I am) in the beverage aisle, hidden behind the coco loco you buy if you want to make pina coladas. the next time I needed coconut mik, I returned to the beverage aisle, confident that I had mastered the ins & outs of this bizarre store. a search behind the coco loco proved fruitless. apparently they just don't stock coconut milk anymore? poor columbians. A world class university, in a world class city... and the only supermarket in walking distance totally blows. read more

I avoid this place whenever possible. Forget about the so-so selection and lousy prices: it's the unbelievably rude service that takes the cake. The cashiers are nasty and often snicker at customers while heckling them in Spanish (although they act like they're casually discussing something else among themselves). They do it all the time, I can't believe they haven't been fired and that management tolerates it. Do yourself a favor and walk a few blocks south to West Side Market, D'agostino's, or Milano's. This store may be in a convenient location, but is super unresponsive to customers and lies about items on special. I had a Yelp posting up about 2.5 months ago, explaining that the "chicken cordon bleu" is NEVER available in the store when a giant sign in the window says it's on special (it's never available other times either, but maybe it's a special thing). For years I've complained to the store manager after seeing the sign and trying to buy the item (which is quite good if you can get it), and was always given a coupon to come back another time (to get it at the sale price), or told to call in advance. This, however, is not how I shop for food, and, frankly, if the store advertises an item as being available on sale, they should have it in stock. Maybe now and then they would sell out of a popular item, but in this case, it is NEVER there when advertised...and as noted, this has been going on for YEARS. After I posted on Yelp, the owner of the Morton Wiliams chain responded with an apology (visible below, dated Jan 17, 2019) and said things would improve, and also offered me $25 in store credit as compensation. The meat dept manager at the store, to whom I was referred, said "it would be nice" if I took down my negative Yelp review, but this wasn't a condition for the store credit. Expecting things really were going to change, I deleted my original review. But now, 2.5 months later, the mysterious chicken cordon bleu is again on special. I have stopped in the store 5 times since the sign went up end of last week, morning, afternoon, weekend, weekday... nothing, it's not there, ever. It's as if nothing has changed. Clearly, honesty and customer service are not high priorities here. Look, if the meat department at this store can't get it together to make chicken cordon bleu, just don't put up the sign. Don't advertise stuff you don't have. And while I'm on the honesty theme, I'll also mention that a guest of mine recently complained that an item marked (with a sign) as being on sale did not ring up that way at the cash register: had she not been alert, she wouldn't have noticed. This is just another type of dishonesty on the part of the management, which can't seem to program the computers properly. Addendum: same guest went to Morton Williams on April 14, 2019 and bought Monini-Extra Virgin Olive Oil. She was charged $17.89 at the cash register, even though the price tag on the bottle says $8.99. (I am looking at these receipts and tags as I write.) The oil was on a special sale, with the sign indicating $8.99, so why was she charged $17.89 at the register. Fortunately she was alert, and the cashier refunded the excess she had been charged. The cashier commented that "it's ridiculous" that this error occurs so often. Clearly, the management of this store does not care a hoot about its customers and can't be bothered to input the right prices in the computers. Shop at your own peril! It is very likely you will be overcharged. read more

Definitely the worst supermarket in the area, despite its proximity to Columbia's campus. The prices are ridiculous, the cashiers look at you like you are the scum of the earth, and the produce section is pretty darn bad. A few times I bought chicken there that was actually rotten when I opened it that same day - whether that's the fault of the brand I bought or the store, I don't know. I came in here Saturday close to midnight or a little after Sunday morning looking for beer. I wasn't sure they would even sell it at that hour because I know certain stores in NYC won't sell alcohol after 11 pm. The employees at Morton Williams seem to hate their jobs with so much fervor that they are actively trying to make the experience of shopping here unpleasant to the point that no one walks in the door so they don't have to work anymore. This is one of those places that you go to when you have to. I like going in here for the sushi though. Maybe it's "inauthentic" but I like being able to grab a tray of brown rice sushi and get out of there fairly quickly if there's no line. Produce selection is a joke though. read more
