The food at this place is authentically Caribbean and exceptional. My family ate here and all of our dishes were simply fantastic. The oxtail is much like delicious brisket, the BBQ chicken might be the best I've ever had, the ribs were perfect and even my mom's spinach quiche was divine. The key lime pie is homemade and a wonderful way to end dinner. The vibe of Mo's is very, very casual, as if you're part of the family (my mom and sister were very over-dressed for this place - they spent about an hour doing hair and makeup and wore nice dresses). The owners are very friendly and even let us try the oxtail before committing to it as a meal. My parents, who typically have bland tastes and hardly ever try anything new, were very pleased and thanked me later for insisting on trying a new 'non-touristy' place. Everybody won! read more

My family and I have been coming to key west for 15 years. We've been to every restaurant in key west and this is the best by far. Our uber driver recommended this place to us. If you're looking for fresh, real Caribbean, Haitian food, THIS is the place. The chef is from Haiti and it is a family run restaurant. I had the Seafood Ragu and I've never been so satisfied. The portions are big too, so it's worth the price. I ate at a couple of places on Duval street and it was basic and over priced. After a few nites of eating at so called "trendy" and " spectacular " restaurants which we found dull,boring, mediocre, tasteless and overpriced we stumbled upon Deuces and Mo 's. Which were both the opposite of everything we found in the recommended restaurants. Yelp had never failed me and this is definitely the first restaurant I've ever been to that I was unable to finish or even eat half of what I ordered, especially considering that I grew up in a third world country. We arrived at the restaurant at 1 pm on a Monday and there was only one couple dining here. Twenty minutes later, we watched them get their order and another twenty minutes later, they finished and left. It was not until an additional 15 minutes (almost an hour after we arrived) when we were the only two people sitting awkwardly in an empty restaurant that our order was finally brought out: a $16.99 seafood casserole (with the only seafood being shrimp) and a $16 goat Creole something with rice and beans. The seafood casserole was good, cheesy, and the shrimp tasted fresh. But OMG my goat dish was another story. The meat was hard and dry and extremely salty. When I tried to help it down with the rice, the rice was inedible, undercooked, and gritty. I drank a whole glass to water to swallow one piece of the goat meat. Of course my water was not filled so I drank my BF's water as well. When the waitress came around eventually and asked how to food was, I explained to her that the goat meat was too hard and dry and salty, she told me that it was the way it should be because they fried the meat. You can imagine cooking some pieces of goat in 100% soy sauce for hours then deep frying them for an hour and then leaving it out to dry for a day and that's what it tasted like. She brought me another side of rice but it was just as hard and inedible. What a waste of food (not on my part, but on the part of the chef). This place was the first where I ever tried Caribbean food, and what can I say other than I love it. The food was so fresh and the service was great. I felt very at home here even though I was no where near it. I went in to this restaurant about six months ago and whenever I tell anyone about my vacation down to Key West I have to mention this restaurant because it made that big of an impact on me. I mean there are other things that made the vacation memorable but the food just stands out. This restaurant is a little out of the way from the typical tourist areas but its worth venturing out. The service can get delayed easily I can tell, due to the fact that every meal is fresh, which is great and worth the wait. So if you do go there make sure you have plenty to talk about with the person you are with or else you might lose patience. If you like spicy let them know, and they'll bring you out some Haitian spicy vegetables to give your meal that extra kick. I warn you though, have a glass of water standing by just in case your mouth starts to burn, I know it happened to the friend I was with the night I went there. read more

We love Mo's Restaurant and will definitely be going back before we leave Key West. The decor is nothing special and the food takes longer than you might like, but any doubts you have will disappear when you take your first bite. I had the fried plantains as a starter and they were seasoned to perfection, including the wonderful dipping sauce they came with. My husband had the French onion soup and while it was a touch salty, it was still very tasty and spicier than the typical version. Also had a glass of their homemade lemonade, which was sweet, tart and very fresh. At Mo's recommendation I had the red snapper and was blown away by the seasoning and perfect preparation. Not fishy at all and spicy with bright citrus flavors in a coconut milk pan sauce. My husband had the shrimp and bow tie pasta in cream sauce, which was also very spicy (at his request) and perfectly cooked. Make sure to ask for a side of the pepper slaw if you really want to turn the heat up on your dish. The portions were huge and we weren't even thinking about desert until Mo walked over with a plate with two pieces of pie and said they were on the house since our food took a while to come out. The texture of the key lime was exceptional, and unlike other restaurants in the area, the lime flavor was quite subtle instead of overpowering. However, it was the pumpkin pie that stole the show. Our first bites had us scratching our heads about what was giving it such a unique and delicious flavor. Go here. As soon as you walk in you can smell how good its gonna be. As others have said oxtail was phenomenonal, super tender in a rich gravy. I had the potatoes and veg on the side and they are nice and sticky roasty. Others in my group had the snapper, sometimes fish gets abused at restaurants but not here, cooked perfectly. This was a top suggestion ala yelp and it did not disappoint! The food was super fresh, all made from scratch and a family endeavor! Chantelle served us and was spot on with recommendations and superior service. The restaurant itself is not fancy but was clean and I was impressed with how well they cleaned the tables! Back to the food, I had a superb cup of onion soup, a fresh house salad with a homemade dressing. The rest of my family had an assortment of food, Carribean roasted chicken which was moist and tender served with rice, black beans, and a deliciously cooked medley of vegetables... so good! Two adult kids had the shrimp creole pasta which could be prepared with varying levels of spiciness. Lastly my husband's entree was an oxtail stew ( fall off the bone tenderness) served in a bowl with dirty rice and a vegetable medley on the side. All portions were very satisfying and we had some leftovers. We were full but according to other reviews, the key lime pie was a not to be missed delicacy. While we were contemplating ordering it our waiter brought out a sampling of the key lime pie and pumpkin pie. Both were delectable and yet different from the pies that I have become used to. The key lime was medium light with a pleasant lime flavoring, it had great body atop a graham cracker crust and was not coyingly sweet or tart. The pumpkin pie was very dense and not too sweet, seeming to be more reminiscent of sweet potato pie, also on a graham cracker crust. This creole Cajun restaurant serves excellent fresh food at fair prices. The fresh flavors carried the dishes well without the utilization of excess salt which most restaurants seem to favor. When we left Mo was sending us off with a cheerful good bye....such a nice touch. We are all keeping this restaurant bookmarked for future dining when we return to Key West. read more

The best Caribbean restaurant i've ever been to. I wish they open up a spot in NY. Their food is made to order and fresh. I had the Ox Tail with negro rice with was very good. The portion was huge I had to take the rest home. As a side I had the fried plantains which was not your typical plantain. We asked the waiter how she cooked it and she had a whole recipe which I couldn't follow but sure it was good. They threw in a complementary key lime and pumpkin pie which was also really good. went to key west for my birthday and wanted to grab a bite to eat. I saw the reviews and I went to check it out. This is a gem it is family owned and they know how to take care of their guest. When I went it was a slow night so we practically has the restaurant to ourselves. I ordered fish which was delicious and my girlfriend ordered the bbq chicken. The only bad thing about this restaurant is the smell of food gets stuck on your clothes since there is no separation of the kitchen and the dining room. The oxtail was super tender and flavorful and the veggies were really good too. I'm not sure what they use for the veggies but they had really good flavor. The rice and beans with the oxtail sauce go well together. The seafood ragu's sauce was delicious and with that garlic bread, perfect combo! The potatoes were just ok and I wish it was cooked a little longer so they were more flavorful. The seafood included shrimps, scallops, and fish. The fish was really tender and really good. The shrimps were good and the scallops were just ok. Too much potatoes for the portion and too little seafood. We got the fry plantain and it wasn't that good. The dipping sauce was just a tomatoes based sauce that was just ok. The half and half was interesting...the ice tea with vanilla made it different. it was a little too sweet but FREE refills!! They fell off the bone. Then the oxtail with red beans and rice. Again, amazing - I don't know how they prepared those beans and rice, but with the sauce from the oxtail it was divine. There were also veggies, and I'm the type to often leave a side of veggies alone, but of course these were perfectly tender. The creole shrimp pasta is good. Comes with garlic bread and enough for two people to share. My wife ordered the Caribbean chicken and she loved it, although it was a bit spicy. If you're looking for some fantastic Haitian cuisine, this is it. The dining area is very modest, but you'll know you're in for a treat when you walk in because of aromatic flavors of the open kitchen. We had fried plantains, creole grouper, and ox tails. The entrees came on a generous plate of your choice of white rice or dirty rice. We opted for the dirty rice - no brainer! The ox tails were tender and in a bowl of sauce that went great with the dirty rice. The grouper was seasoned perfectly with the creole sauce. But the amazing thing was the rice -- oh, that dirty rice! I seriously need to think what kind of person would ask for the white rice!!! I was full already but couldn't stop eating the dirty rice until my plate was clean. Do yourself a favor and walk out here. Order anything on a bed of the dirty rice.
