Moscow Deli had lots of great homemade food when we stopped for lunch on a Saturday. We got an assortment of pierogis (they had 4-5 types that were baked fresh) and a bunch of deli case items, including cabbage rolls, stuffed peppers, potato patties(?), borscht, potato salad. Russian food is not known for being super flavorful or modern, partially due to communism and the associated poverty, but we were pleasantly surprised with the flavor of the food at Moscow Deli. Everything was well seasoned. Many items had minced veggies and/or meat with a nice variety of ingredients. The owner, a wonderful woman who emigrated from Moscow in the 80's, helped us explore the options on the first deli case, and threw-in a free Borscht. It was delicious, and not scary at all! It was a very hearty soup with delicious beet being one of the ingredients. Again, great seasoning / spices. They also have a full deli, and several Russian sandwiches, which we plan to try next time. There were a few tables for dining, which were open. Had passed by this place several times while visiting other establishments in the small strip mall here. Small but well supplied Russian deli, staffed by very efficient and no nonsense Russian women. The place is small and can get quite busy, so bring your patience as you wait your turn in line to order from the deli. I really enjoyed the medovik honey cake and shuba salad. Today I tried 2 different pork based dumplings (Pelmini)... The Stolichniye (Sonia's Kitchen) brand beef and pork mixed dumplings were pretty good. They were less doughy and the meat was slightly fibrous. The Grandma's Perogies (Siberian) brand pork and beef mixed dumplings were also pretty good. They were more doughy and the meat was not fibrous. I think I prefer these, but it was a close call. Next time I need to compare against their bulk (unbranded) dumplings. read more

Decent Eastern European themed deli, although it's pretty small on the inside - their deli selections and premade salads and desserts have a decent selection. I end up coming here right in late December at least once a year like clockwork to indulge in various New Years traditions and festivities. Great place for traditional black bread, salmon roe (although it's pricey), smoked fish, and salads like shuba, vinegret, and olivye. Their Napoleon Cake is one of my favorites. So if you love a good Napoleon; come here (but call ahead) and grab a few slices. read more

I love this little store and deli. The food is delicious and the ladies working there are so helpful and kind. I had my baby with me, and one of the ladies working there offered to help me carry my bag of groceries to the car, which I thought was really sweet. Had high expectations on this place but kinda fell flat after a bad experience...I was instructed to return 10 minutes after I placed my order and when I returned, they informed me that they gave my sandwich to another customer. While the wait staff was apologetic, this left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak. The moscovskiy sandwich wasn't as warm and toasted even after I had asked them to do so. Maybe they were rushing to make the sandwich.. who knows?! The sandwich was tasty enough but maybe not as good as I thought it would be. We also ordered the cheese, cabbage, and chicken pirozhkis. The cheese was the tastiest, followed by the cabbage. The chicken lacked flavor. The Napoleon, however, was YUM! By itself, I'd rate it a 5 coz it had the right amount of sweetness and satisfied my sweet tooth. Overall, I would've given this place a 2 for the bad service but the other items managed to lift the rating to a 3. Would I return? It's a small and cozy deli. When I visited there on Friday 13:00, it was busy. Hard working women are helping and cooking and doing everything at the deli. Somehow, I felt at home. They don't currently offer dine in, only to go. You can buy some prepared salads, cakes, hams, desserts, frozen foods and cans. I purchased Borscht, cabbage roll and potato salad. Borscht-smells wonderful. Has some sourness and has such a good stock base with all the vegetables in it. Some sweetness from veggies. Slight smell of beets. Yum! I'll definitely get this again. Cabbage roll-it has rice, chopped veggie and meat. Moist and cabbage not over cooked which is perfect. Potato salad - I ordered one with chopped ham which have smoky taste. It has peas, carrot and pickles but it's not sour as some American potato salad. Peas are adding good flavor to it. Potato is chopped into cubes. I'd definitely will go back. I was recently craving some of the Russian candies & treats that I grew up eating, but had no idea where to find them in the OC area. That is...until I heard about "Moscow Deli." A very small & humble store located in an unassuming strip mall in Costa Mesa, "Moscow Deli" offers various teas, cookies, deli meats, wine, packaged & fresh baked goods, sandwiches, hot foods, & more. Considering that this unique little deli is in a lot with a bunch of other businesses, parking is plentiful. All of the ladies inside were polite and helpful whenever I had questions about the things they stock. It's a neat place mostly for groceries and the like (save for produce). But they did have a lunch menu, so I decided to grab a few things. I got: Vareniki, which is basically a pierogi or little dumpling. These made me think of mashed potato filled raviolis. They were tasty, especially with the onions and sourcream. I wish they made them in house, though. I'm certain they use the ones that they also sell pre-packaged. These take a while to cook, so if you are in a rush, I'd rethink it. SyrnikiI, these were little farmers cheese and raisin pancakes. I did like them, though I think they would have been even better with a blueberry jam. They were delicate and fell apart easily. A nice mix of sweet and savory. Kief sandwich.. I quite liked the kief sam, and wouldn't mind picking up another for a lunch break. It was filled with different salamis/ meats/ cheeses, russian dressing, pickles, lettuce and tomato. Pretty satisfying! In addition, they also had lots of jars of different candy that they sold by the pound, so I got to mix and match and snag one of everything. I read somewhere that this place has some killer borscht. I thought I read it on yelp, but I guess I was mistaken. Unfortunately for us we got there after lunch so were not able to have a sandwich (after reading about it in the reviews was kinda wishing I had room) but I asked for a tub of borscht to go. The lady showed me the size (it's like one of those large plastic containers they give you at the grocery store for things like potato salad etc) and told me it was going to be $6.99. I said fine. If you want the borscht hot you have to let them know. They sell it cold if you want to take it to go which is what I wanted. Ask them for sour cream if you don't have any at home. I heated it up and put an ample dollop of sour cream into it. MAN!!! It was delicious! It's not vegetarian and they use Asian cuts of beef which has tendon on it. Totally yummy to me but if you get queasy with these cuts .... oh well .... just don't eat it I guess. I'm convinced they use some sauerkraut in the borscht because it had this really nice sour taste without being overpowering. 5 stars for the borscht alone! I'll re-rate when I try the other stuff. They're open 7 days a week although I can't remember the exact opening times..... but definitely a 10 am opening every single day. read more

It was an unexpected encounter. We had come over 30 miles to do lunch at the Argentine Empanada Place a few doors down (really good btw). Curious, we found ourselves entering a nicely stocked yet small, family run deli and market, and I hadn't even known they were there. This was particularly auspicious as we have a new "Russian" friend, and we were excited to find a place that might have a great gift for our next get together. So don't read this yet, my Yelper (and personal) friend, Vlad. If you are Russian, this place, a rarity in our not so ethnically diverse part of So Cal, would bring back fond foodie memories of the motherland. We are talking meats, rich sausages, cheeses, other delicacies like cold herring, specialty cakes, and they even carry freshly baked ethnic breads, Orange County style, of course. Their shelves are stocked with imported canned goods and candies. The little deli menu, including sandwiches from their deli meats and hearty soups, had enough that I recognized and appreciated that I knew I wanted to return and experience their homemade goods properly. There is a little table or two to sit and savor. I told the counter lady, who clearly spoke English as a second language, I wanted a gift, something to impress someone very special. She smiled and guided me to their imported chocolates and wafer cookies with hazelnuts. I hope they are a treat! We tried, Vlad. I can't wait to return for a big bowl of soup....their homemade borscht or cabbage soup, or even a cabbage roll (she wipes drool off her chin). Came here a few months ago with my husband because we were hungry and wanted to grab a late lunch (or early dinner). When we first walked in, I sat down at 1 or 2 tables and my husband went towards the front to let someone know that we want to order a few sandwiches. Well the line was held up due to these 2 women who were still adding things to the counter to pay for their items. If you are still deciding what to purchase, you shouldn't be holding up the line adding more and more items to the counter... especially when there is a long line forming behind you... But anyways, eventually my husband told one of the ladies behind the counter the 2 sandwiches we wanted to have. The lady said fine but she just went back and helped another customer. The second lady we saw was also still helping those 2 ladies (that I mentioned about earlier) check out. As my husband and I just sat at the table feeling quite hungry, we just sat watching the 2 ladies continuing to help the customers but never bother acknowledging about us waiting for our sandwiches (thank goodness we didn't have to pre pay). After being more annoyed as time passed to 15 minutes, we decided to walk out since no one obviously cared about making us our sandwiches. With service like that, I was quite disappointed, especially since this place is so highly rated (4 stars overall at the time of this review). I would never return here. read more
