My daughter and I were thrilled when late on a Saturday night, as we drove by Northampton, we impulsively called Moshi Moshi, got directions, and scored 2 seats at the 7-seat sushi bar in this adorable restaurant. Moshi Moshi is a tiny place with a BIG welcome from the sushi chefs and wait staff. We shared an excellent appetizer of spicy tuna tartare on rice chips and then had a bunch of a la carte rolls: spicy salmon handrolls, spicy California cut roll, avocado cut rolls, and an adorable "Caterpillar" cut roll (supposedly created in honor of author Eric Carle who the chef said was a customer of the restaurant). Every item was beautifully fresh, prepared very well, and casually but attractively served. Great service from both the wait staff and the chef, who is quite a character. It was a lovely last-minute decision and offered fun and interesting conversatioin that can result when sitting at a sushi bar in a small place with friendly people. Best sushi restaurant in town, by far. What makes moshi moshi stand out in the crowd, is Sam's creativity. Every time i come, there is something new on the menu. Most sushi restaurants have a couple more elaborate rolls and a standard menu... thats it, it never changes, minus a new special every so often. I have been going to moshi moshi for 8 years, close to weekly, and sam consistently impresses with new creations. Sam is an artist, everywhere else is simply bland and interchangeable. I tried this place out largely on the basis of Anthony C's review, and while it was fine, I was not terribly impressed. Everything was good but nothing was better than good. We ordered a wide selection - edamame, seaweed salad, oyster tempura, nigiri of maguro, hamachi, sake, saba, unagi, and suzuki, a mixed veggie roll, and shumai. Again, nothing offended, but very little stood out. Prices were such that something really should have stood out - we spent $75 before tip for two people. I'll gladly admit to being a bit of a sushi snob, so if you aren't, take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm sure I'll go back sometime, and I'll probably try a lot of the other Northampton sushi options as well. That said, there is nothing about Moshi Moshi that would lead me to recommend it to friends, and when I really want good sushi, I'll probably have to make an annual pilgrimage back to Oiishi in Boston where I will spend twice as much but leave 5 times as happy. read more

I think it's slightly cheaper than the other realistic option of Osaka (the other "options" aren't really options because their sushi is not as good as Moshi Moshi or Osaka). Would you like to know why this is my favorite sushi place? First of all, you are greeted by the owner as soon as you walk in the door (yes, I did say the owner). The greeting is a happy "bong" and "welcome to Moshi Moshi!". You enter through the sushi bar; dining room is upstairs. The place is homey, clean, and the aroma from the cooking is great (assuming you love the food I love). The staff is friendly and if you have any issues, just say hi to the owner and he will be sure to make things right. If I were to summarize my experience at Moshi Moshi in a word, that word would be "disappointed." A shame, considering I liked the place a lot as I walked in. Friendly staff, warm environment, and nice and laid-back. The wrought iron spiral staircase was different, and led to a quaint upstairs area with a view of Main St. The decor and music gave the impression that they don't take themselves too seriously, which I like, but not when I get the same impression with the food. The dishes were more expensive than other Asian restaurants in the area, which might have been okay for an upscale-oriented restaurant or exceptional food, but neither were the case. We started with a cut roll that was good, but not quite as good as some of the other restaurants in town. My girlfriend's dish, the shrimp tempura, was mediocre and seemed more like regular friend shrimp than true tempura. Presentation was similarly underwhelming, tossed on a plate with a side of white rice. My meal, the steak rice bowl, had decent steak, but not enough of it, and an overwhelming amount of vegetables for the quantity of rice and steak. The majority of the sauce had found its way to the bottom of the bowl and formed a sugary soup with the rice. Presentation again was extremely basic. Neither meals did anything to justify their twenty dollar price tags or even managed to distinguish themselves from seven dollar dishes at Asian restaurants that focus on takeout. In the future, I'll stick with either Zen, Osaka, or, if I'm willing to venture into Springfield, Tokyo - one of my favorites for Asian food in the area. read more

This is the best place for sushi outside of NYC/BOS. I think I've tried every place and while we're blessed with quite a few great sushi restaurants in western mass, this place takes the cake. Awesome service. The wait staff is very approachable and offered countless suggestions as we were very curious about some of their unique dishes. The chefs are great. Talking with us and being like old friends. Appetizers are EXCELLENT. The rice bombs which were a deep fried rice with a spicy tuna on top are a must. The honeymoon special is wonderful. The softshell crab is the best I've had in the area. There are a ton more to try as well. The sushi is plentiful and they cater to what you suggest and prefer. We had a few rolls which I wish I had pictures of and will get the next time I go. If you like sushi, moshi moshi will make you a roll you've dreamed about. Atmosphere is what makes this place. Another reviewer complained about "reggae" music. Which was playing and to be honest - it fit. What stands out the most for me as a newcomer to this restaurant is how friendly not only the staff and chefs are, but the other customers. We sat down next to a group of regulars, and then a table behind us filled up with more regulars. It felt like hanging out at a party eating with a bunch of your friends. Probably the best sushi I have ever eaten. I was at other sushi restaurants and just wished that I was here. I highly recommend the Mt.Zilla roll. I believe it is an exclusive roll here that you cannot get anywhere else. I am very picky about my sushi and this place bested all expectations. We ate here one night recently and were extremely disappointed. We were greeted warmly at the door and seated upstairs almost immediately. We ordered a few rolls, which took a while to come out. When they did, the nori was dry and overly chewy, and the fish wasn't the freshest- which is always a bummer when you are seeking a meal dependent on freshness. The servers were beyond nice, but while we were seated upstairs, it seemed to take forever for the server to come up and see how we were doing or to get a drink refill. The rolls were expensive and not a very good value compared to other area restaurants. Been here a dozen times at least in the time I've been in western Mass. Sam, the owner, is always cheery and friendly to customers. I haven't been disappointed by him a single time. A very nice and quiet sushi bar on a very busy part of Northampton. Me and my girlfriend craved sushi before we head to Quarters. We've missed the place once mainly because its on a corner once you drove under the train tracks. I was confused where it was at first until we parked our car and start walked to where place is at. Once we walk through the door, we where warmly greeted by the three chiefs behind a counter following up with a gong. Selections of sushi looked great and surprised how fast they made it. I felt like they can make it in their sleep! The taste of the sushi was really good, I am a sucker for tuna and its good quality tuna...but its not the best sushi I've eaten...I am not a stuck up sushi aficionado but I just feel like they can do better. Popped in looking for a family friendly sushi place while back in town for the weekend and had a great experience. Good food, great service. While we had to sit upstairs (there's a fairly terrifying circular stair leading up), it gave the kids room to spread out a little, even during the start of dinner hours on a Saturday night. Service was quick and attentive, and they even made off-menu chicken tempura for our picky little ones with a smile. My husband got sushi regular, and I got some spicy rolls, and a California roll to share with our toddler. Everything was fresh and tasty. This place is AMAZING! I will admit that Sushi is not one of my favorite foods, but that is mainly because here in L.A. it's hard to find a place that doesn't cater to just the rich. Moshi Moshi is fun and great. My boyfriend and I go here at least once every summer when we're in Western Mass and it's one of the best parts of our trip. The first time we went here it was with my boyfriend's uncle who is a patron and one of Sam's top customers. I ordered a bento box and my boyfriend got some oysters and Unagi. The bento box was just that, a bento box with teriyaki chicken (yes, i'm that kind of person). And it was great. But! if you want some really good food at Moshi, the bento box is not for you, it's like getting a hamburger and fries at a buffet, it seems more like it's for kids than an adult. Now onto the deliciousness of Moshi Moshi: Sam's Honeymoon oyster are DELICIOUS, and I love oysters. At first i was a bit freaked out by the whole Quail egg thing, but after having one, i couldn't stop! And then there's the Spicy oyster dish which is just as amazing because it's spicy (they're really spicy)! My next favorite thing to get here is Unagi. I was never a fan of water-creatures that weren't fish, but my gosh! When my boyfriend let me try one of his, i fell in love. The eel just melts in your mouth and the sauce that it's garnished with complements the flavor of the eel and doesn't overpower it. Next is the Spicy Tuna Roll. I am one of the pickiest eaters i know (as i alluded to above) but i will try almost anything once. This Roll wasn't my favorite, but it was so good. I think part of my partiality to it is that i was already getting full from the other food, but it was, none the less, really delicious. I'm sure there were a few other dishes we ordered that i'm not mentioning mostly because i don't remember. The ambiance here is great, really playful and friendly. Sam and his family are so great and sweet. The place is kind of small, but it contributes to the family-like environment. My favorite part: the chopsticks on the wall. SAM! It's definitely decently expensive, and I don't know what's wrong with their website, but I really enjoyed their food. I had sushi, and the friends I went with had sashimi and shrimp friend rice. it was all good. The maki rolls are a little smaller than what I've seen at other restaurants, but each maki roll had six pieces, so it wasn't a big deal. It's worth noting that I didn't get any specialty rolls, just regular things like tuna, salmon, etc... It's a cute place, very friendly, and from what I could tell, it looks like they love their regulars. Always consistently good. Always fresh, the service is always good, and we just like going. The caterpillar roll is my daughter's fav. and the hand rolls are just what you need. Perfect place for lunch when in NoHo or if you just want good food and no lines. The owner (Sam) is right there behind the bar and greats everyone with a "welcome to moshi moshi (insert accent here)". Unless you need a table, sit at the bar. Visited this place for the first time and it was simply awesome. I loved how friendly the whole staff was as soon as we entered through the door. We asked to sit upstairs because we didn't want to sit by the door, it felt like we were sitting in the kitchen but upstairs was perfect. Anyhow I went with my wife and her friend, we ordered lots of food, enough for five people I thought but the sushi was fresh and light... didn't have the bad aftertaste. Miso soup was amazing especially after we added a little hot sauce. The udon curry shrimp soup was nice but my favorite were the oysters, they were out of this world fresh and not smelly. Let's just say the three of us finished all the food and ordered desert. Our desert order was one of each thing they had on the menu... they were ok but I know the Japanese are not really into desert like we are in Lebanon, the world capital of deserts and foodies. I've always enjoyed both the service and my food here. So far I've enjoyed the Nabeyaki Udon, Tempura Udon, Chicken Yakisoba, crunchy spicy tuna hand roll, and the Philadelphia hand roll. Recently they've been serving free hot tea with meals and it keeps me happy and warm. Moshi Moshi is a bit pricier and smaller portions than I would like (and smaller portions than Osaka) but I would rather give my business to Moshi Moshi than Osaka. Hoping to sit at the sushi bar one day when it's less packed... Comments for menu items: Nabeyaki Udon - the udon was delicious for the most part, but the poached egg was disappointing as it was throughly cooked and there was no gooey inside. I would even go so far to say the poached egg was over-boiled and dry. Tempura Udon - delicious tempura but I wish they wouldn't put the tempura directly in the soup. It gets soggy the longer you wait. Chicken Yakisoba - was in general good, but a little under seasoned Hand rolls: Crunchy spicy tuna hand roll - lovely crunch and texture, especially the first bite through the seaweed Philadelphia hand roll - good balance of salmon and cream cheese Pickled ginger was disappointing as it wasn't very flavorful... Came here for dinner with a party of 6 on a Thursday night around 7 p.m. Was immediately seated on the second floor. The first floor has a sushi bar and is quite small along with outside seating. The second floor has a good amount of seating, but be prepared to go up a narrow staircase. Ordered two sushi rolls, the Northampton Roll - tuna and salmon - was small - not worth the price, but it was tasty. The other was the MT Zella roll and it was a nicely presented, good portions and packed with meat - shrimp tempura, spicy tuna and eel. For dinner, I had the shrimp tempura. Entrees included a bowl of miso soup - which was good. In the main dish, the shrimp was not the traditional shrimp tempura - it reminded me of fried shrimp instead of tempura style. Along with tempura came tempura broccoli, mushrooms, onions and a potato along with white rice. Others in the party had the grilled salmon, which they spoke positively about and another teriyaki chicken, which was prepared simply - nothing special. Overall, this is not your traditional Japanese food - more Americanized, maybe to fit the tastes of the area. However, being a visitor accustomed to Japanese food - do not come expecting authentic Japanese food. It also seemed like they had a few Korean dishes as well. Whether you go in late-night, or for lunch, you are welcomed with smiles and friendly words. The food is great. There is a standard menu of sushi & sashimi as well as stir-fry options, soups, noodles, and the list goes on. Then there is a daily specials board which hosts some of Sam's newest creations. These are fun and creative and where I tend to order from most frequently. Moshi Moshi also carries alcohol. There are beers and sakes (including sparkling) in the cooler. Sang Soo aka Sam is a wonderful host and excellent sushi chef. My wife and I visited from SoCal. And we have some experience with sushi bars. Sam would be a welcome addition in Los Angeles or San Diego. While we are normally nigiri and sashimi purists. Sam and another guest talked us into the "Sam I Am Special Roll" bravo! As any regular sushi fan knows, it is not merely the freshness of ingredients but the "grade" of fish and preperation that make the difference. My cousin took me here today whilst I was visiting for the afternoon from my side of the state. The chef was very friendly, greeting and thanking everyone who walked through the door. My cousin has the crunchy spicy tuna roll, which was tasty but did not have as much flavor as I'd hoped. I had the Uni (sea urchin) and it was actually some of the best I've had! We then shared one of their specials, the Mt. Zilla, which was tuna and crab tempura covered in avocado and topped with crab salad. It was INCREDIBLE. One of the BEST rolls I've ever had. My only qualm was the waitress would hover until we took a bite and then asked how we liked it. I understand being friendly and ensuring satisfaction but I had visions of walking into an overpriced boutique where the salespeople follow you to make sure you don't steal anything. read more
