Anyone who is in the know understands how much I love good homemade food and just wow. The smell and taste is some of the best I have had outside of the Islands. They sell all the spices they cook with as well as the sauce she uses. Wife had the chicken stew and I got Kahti Kahti both dishes where so good. Now for the pattys, homemade, stuffed full, and reminded me of being in Jamaica. The house sauce has a spice that comes on slow and stays with you for a few minutes. I got the peanut butter chicken stew and I found it very tasty. It came with fufu and I got the yam fufu. That was also good, it went well with the stew and was soft and warm in the mouth. Food was tasteless and jollof was very soggy. Suya was also burnt (more than well well done), and lacked spice. Typical jollof has some substantial seasoning which includes salt, some spice additionally spices including, black pepper, garlic, some curry, scotch bonnet peppers, onions and ginger. This jollof lacked all of that. Additionally, typical suya is cooked on charcoal grills and has a combination of ginger, cayenne pepper, and other spices that give it flavor and a rough texture (from spicing during the cook process). This suya lacked all of this, and instead tasted like it was fried or grilled with spice for an extended amount of time. Summary, there was nothing authentic about the flavors of these particular dishes when I tried them. read more

The food is delicious but I've never actually been able to eat in the restaurant because every time we go in we are ignored. Not just a little ignored either. We waited 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge that we were there on two separate occasions. There was a table of two and a table of four eating with no one else waiting besides us and not once did the server even look at us as she walked past a few times but mostly stayed in the kitchen. So we left. Twice. I don't get it! I guess we will never visit there again even though we know the food is tasty from having it from events elsewhere. It was our first time visiting Motherland Kitchen, been wanting to for years but finally remembered to after our hike at Catoctin State Park. We ordered Chicken Peanut Butter Stew with Fufu and Beef Stew with Jollof rice and fried plantains. We also had a beef patty. Everything was good, the beef stew was our favorite. The jollof rice went with the stew very well. The plantains were savory yet sweet at the same time. Thank you for filling us up, yum! This place is such a gem!!! Miss Sabina is an incredible chef, owner and person. The first thing we noticed when we arrived was the unbelievable smell of the food that was wafting in the parking lot, we anxiously ran in and were met by Miss Sabina. She was incredibly helpful when it came to crafting the exact meal and sides that we wanted, although I wish i could've ordered everything because it all looked and sounded so good. Tons of vegetarian options too- but no boring stuff these things are loaded with spice and flavor! Heads up, you will have to wait a little for the food to be ready, but dammit! Good things come to those who wait, and this meal is one that's more than worth waiting 15-20 minutes for - or you can order ahead of time to pick up or delivery via postmates / grub hub. The goat and oxtail were delicious, the fufu was excellent, and all the different rice dishes were great. They also sell Miss Sabina's cookbooks with 105 african recipes as well as multiple kinds of seasonings - that she will make sure to tell you are completely salt free! This is better than the vegan food I had in west Africa, and it stands to reason knowing the owner and chef, Sabina, has been a vegan herself for over a year, and has poured her heart and soul into making the best vegan dishes possible. If you're a local vegan, you are so blessed. I live in Southern California and not even LA has anything like this. The price is reasonable and value is tremendous. The ingredients are simple and whole, and the preparation is outstanding. Everything is bursting with flavor. The fufu and banku, which are used to eat the dishes by hand, have a perfect consistency which is not too dry and not too sticky. Happened upon this place with the extended family while in the area to ride the holiday train and decided to stop in for a late lunch/early dinner around 3pm. Ordered an assortment of many dishes of share among us and try, which seemed to lean more toward (West) African flavors than Afro-Caribbean. What a gem from this one-woman show. The chef/owner spent a career in a white collar, high tech desk job before eating/breathing/dreaming food and cooking, she explained to us. She focuses on healthy cooking, where many of the dishes (unless stated with a non-veg protein) are actually vegan. My sister's and my favorite dish was the shrimp egusi with cassava/yam fufu. My brother-in-law's favorite was the stewed goat. The hot sauce was dark and roasted with some serious back-of-the-palate heat. Free puff-puffs (beignets) were given out to all the kids mid-meal (explaining that they were what her grandchildren always ask her for); free Madeleine cookies were additionally given out to everyone as we finished our family meal. I was raised if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. So I'll keep to the facts of this experience. The jollof rice was mushy, the egusi was watery and the suya was dry. The part that gets me the most is the customer service was horrible the attitude over the phone was evident and in person literally as if she was disturbed by the calls that came in to order. Then the cost was absurd especially for the portion size. It was like she was portioning food for small small children at home. Not feeling this at all. Not only was the food tastless ( I hade to season it myself), but the portion was a joke for the cost. My stomach obviously objected to it, because it was so painful to digest.
