They seem to be a recurring part of the customer experience. I understand that staffing is expensive and that small businesses have real cost pressures. But the owners need to figure out the operations side without sacrificing food quality. Good food matters, but customers also need reliability. The simplest fix is to give more accurate and conservative wait-time estimates. If food is going to take 45 minutes to an hour, say that up front. It is much better to set realistic expectations than to give customers a shorter estimate and leave them waiting. Customers have other Caribbean food options in Frederick, Montgomery, and Loudoun County, so the overall experience matters. read more

I like Tropix it's such a chill spot. We got fried coconut shrimp (nothing special, I would pass) and the beef patties, which was our favorite dish. I had the curry goat/oxtail and rice it was good. If this review was based solely off customer service it would be 4 stars. Sadly it's not. Food ordered was Oxtail pasta and a beef patty Other than the food being hot there are no other positives. Oxtails were tough. Let me reiterate TOUGH!! The beef patty was too mushy inside. Honestly I've had better frozen patty's from the freezer section at Walmart. We ate at this restaurant when it was Jerk N Jive and we liked it, so we decided to try the new restaurant at this location. We went when they had a fund raiser for people in Jamaica. They were playing Jamaican music and the food was also very good. I got the shrimp tacos, which were huge and delicious, and the jerk macaroni and cheese. My wife got the jerk chicken which was very tender and tasty, and my son got the Tropix Rasta Pasta with shrimp. My wife also got the Tropix Signature Rum Flight which consisted of four drinks and were good. We can't complain about the food at all. The service was a little lacking, although they were busy. However you still have to come around to the tables and refill the drinks, especially with seasoned food. Overall, though, we'd probably go back. read more

Stopped at a Caribbean Festival in Silver Spring and this place had the longest line. My wife and I decided to give them a shot. With a line this long the food had to be good. I spent $55 for these two platters. The Jerk Chicken was $20. Came with 3 pieces that immediately came off the grill but lacked the Jerk taste. Practically grilled chicken for me. The Mac & Cheese needs work. Tasted like cheese on top of a bunch of noodles. The plantains were good but as you can see there were about 5 of them. My wife ordered the oxtail. The Oxtail and Festival were good even though they only gave two festival. This meal was $30 with a lack on the sides to me. I'll know next year. I hope they improve. read more

The jerk pork was overcooked and sauce had no flavor. I believe the jerk pork was left over from the day before since Friday is Jerk Pork day. There was no scotch bonnet and no heat. What a beautiful restaurant! The lighting, the seating, the set up are welcoming. This is a great spot to host a group lunch or small event. Fabulous customer service - every employee is willing to help support you whether with your meal, recommendations, or just refilling your beverage. The food is also delicious! I've been here twice - once for brunch and once for dinner and both had great options. For dinner, I ordered the oxtail, white rice, and cabbage. This is our first try of this restaurant after it changed from the previous one. With the limited to go order, this review is only focused on the oxtails and jerk chicken wings that we ordered. Here I'm giving the oxtail and a five star . They were delicious and flavorful. Oxtail cooked to the perfection, easy to take off the bone & flavor was authentic. The rice came with it was a perfect complement. Chicken wings were bursting with flavors and not dry. Also the portions of the sides were plentiful, very solid. I have probably ordered from here 4 times. Each time the food was flavorful and delicious. I have never been inside the establishment but they often send ads for liming and the typical bar activities. It looks like a good time. However, lets get into the food. When looking at the menu you may be put off by the prices. Don't be! The portions are generous! It's going to take me a few days to eat the pasta alone. Not pictured(because I inhaled it) was the jersey mac & cheese. It was a respectable dryer version of Mac and cheese. The jerk seasoning is light and not overwhelming. Give it a try but just know that it's not a gooey mac. The wings are actually chicken wings, not wing dings. The lemon pepper ones were the right amount of crunch, tang, and flavor. The jerk wings are good as well. They are sauced and not fried. That sauce is finger licking good. I would be interested in trying these fried and lightly sauced. The rasta past is my go to. I've had it with jerk chicken and jerk shrimp but the oxtails are by far the best way to have this pasta. I appreciate the portions and the consistency in the flavors of the food. I can't wait to visit them in person one evening. read more

This restaurant has a great ambiance and a good looking bar. The server was very helpful but a tad overwhelmed with our table of 10. If I lived in Maryland this spot would def be my go to for brunch. The mimosa special is crazy and they taste too good. I got the jerk wings and ox tail tacos and fries. All of my food items were good. I loved the jerk sauce. I have to confess that my spouse and I- for the 1st time ever- entered a Jamaican food establishment where we weren't fighting to prove we're the customer and they are open to serve us not them doing us a favor. It became quickly apparent that much thought was placed into how the food was plated. Each entry was creatively presented (like 5 mini patties appetizer plated like little clam shells), or saltfish fritters lightly battered with fresh scallions as a garnish. I ate a succulent oxtail dinner with a rich meat sauce. My wife ordered curry goat (along with delicious side dishes). We asked a server if the Chef went to culinary school because of the thoughtfulness that was on display with every dish we tried. To our pleasant & humorous surprise it turns out we were unknowingly speaking to the owner who then enlightened us that she's is self taught. In summary the one description of the food and experience is "dignity". You sense the husband and wife team intends to bring dignity to a cultural dining experience often boxed in as a fast food after thought. I ordered from Tropix via DoorDash and got Curry goat stew with yellow rice Plantain Jerk Mac Patties Curry Goat: very tender and flavorful although it tasted like they added cornstarch to thicken the sauce. I prefer without that my preference. There was absolutely no spice in it. If you don't like spicy food this would be good for you. I prefer a spicy curry but nevertheless it was good Yellow rice: it was jasmine rice. Good flavor but a lil too mushy for me. Plantain: best plantain I have had from a Caribbean restaurant! Sweet perfectly fried and not soggy at all!! Jerk Mac: the Jerk Mac is the reason why I deducted two stars. It was not good. The Mac was Al dente and the sauce had absolutely no seasoning just a little bit of jerk. The sauce tasted floury like the roux was not cooked long enough. (Mac and cheese bakers y'all know what I'm talking about). It seemed rushed. It was not appetizing. I could not even swallow one bite. Please revamp this recipe and add some more cooking time and cheeses! Patties: I ordered three types chicken, beef, vegetable but only got all beef. They do not taste homemade. They taste like they are golden krust. Liquified meat in the middle. If you like that then it will be great for you. Overall I'd give it a 6.5. The store just opened so there is room for improvement. The restaurant is right by my house and I was excited to try considering I haven't had any good Caribbean food in Frederick since I moved here 8 months ago. I tried Tropix Pots Cuisines at the SoCo wine festival I went to yesterday. Let me start off by saying, I don't usually write reviews but I had to. RUNNNNNN....the other way because NO. 1st thing, the line was so long for food that was pretty much out in warmers already, so not sure what the wait was for. However yes, it's a festival so what the hey...stand in line and be patient. Once Igot my food and sat down and tried the rice and peas. I IMMEDIATELY got an attitude because not only was the rice undercooked, it had absolutely no flavor. Not even a pinch of salt nor pepper. STG. Mac and cheese was okay. Heres where things TOOK A TURN!!! Went on to try the BarB fried chicken. It LOOKED good smothered in sauce. I was trying to pry my chicken open with my fork but it would not budge. I'm using my nails and everything wondering what was going on. Once I finally was able to break the skin and puncture through the chicken to peep inside, the ENTIRE INSIDE WAS RAW. Like almost straight out of the pack raw. Disgusted, I take the hike to go show them and get this resolved. Once I showed them the chicken was raw, one of the lady's in the back was so apologetic and asked if she could remake my order. ATP i didn't want any meat, I just asked for Double Mac and Cabbage. They must've had someone with no grilling experience on the grill. You CANNOT do that, especially when you're serving hundreds and maybe even thousands of people. I can't imagine how many people will be sick as a dog from this place because of course other people ordered chicken that came from the same batch as mine. And I pray I'll be good. A piece of my chicken was sitting on top of my rice and peas that I had a few spoonfuls of. Lastly, raw chicken aside... This gave not one ounce of Caribbean flavor/spice. Very bland-unseasoned sides(rice and peas and Mac). I did however enjoy the cabbage that I got after I returned my order. For that high price tag, y'all need to go back to the drawing board. read more

Sat at the bar and was promptly greeted by the bartender. I ordered an old fashioned...it was excellent! Best bartender in Frederick! I started off with the bone in Honey Old Bay wings. They were slightly crispy and seasoned to perfection. I asked the bartender to recommend my entire and she recommended the Jerk chicken, rice & peas and cabbage. Great recommendation! The jerk chicken had just enough spice for my tolerance level and was super tender and flavorful. Avoid R&B BINGO On Thursday nights. They advertise 7-10 PM but it doesn't start until 7:45 PM. While I would have assumed they start later so customers could order food and drinks (plus they have all these specials) that is NOT the case because the service is less than subpar. My daughter and I arrived at 7 PM and around 7:15 PM they took our drink order of water. By 7:45 PM we did not receive our water nor had the waiter taken our order. So it seems there is no interest in customers eating or drinking there. Unfortunately, I could not comment on the food because I wasn't even able to order.
