Got help buying a whole new setup which I do every winter but the snowboarding boots ended up being too big just worn them around the house. When I left they told me if I needed to return them all I needed was the boots and that's it. Came back about 3 weeks later willing to buy another pair of boots with y'all (original size were 10 and I needed 8s) but I was told I needed the box and receipt even thought my information was in the system and the person who was helping me was being super rude just shutting everything down. Erik's says they Pride themself on making sure everything fits but from my experience that is some bs. Wouldn't suggest anybody to buy things here, now I'm on the hunt for a new snowboarding shop. Wish I could give them a zero rating. Update: As y'all can see the owner gave me an email well guess what I emailed the owner and didn't get a response from him and it's been 3 weeks. The owner is just as bad as the store and just wanted to act like he cared. If y'all are looking for a good, honest snowboard/ski shop I would go to REI instead if you are in Madison area. read more

A few years ago I bought a used bike rack from a friend. Since that time it's sat in my basement unused. I'm now moving across country and need to load up my bike and hit the road, except... I have no idea how to use this bike rack and the manual is no longer online. Oops! Someone else managed to get the bike precariously perched on the rack, upside down, but it wasn't stable enough for a long drive. So I swung into Erik's and asked for help. There were only a couple of customers and a couple of employees, but the wait for service was long. I wasn't a paying customer, though, so I'm not going to ding them for that. One of the employees came outside with me, took one look at my upside down bike, and immediately got down to business showing me the proper way to load up a bike on the rack (hint: that bar I didn't know what to do with? It was SUPER important) The help was much appreciated, and if I was sticking around Madison I'd be happy to go back in the future as an actual customer. read more

We went to Erik's just to educate ourselves in e-bikes and ended up buying two within an hour of arriving. Chuck, our salesperson was awesome. He and the entire staff we met were extremely knowledgable, very friendly and kept the answers to our questions on a level we could understand. There was no buying pressure from anyone there and we felt comfortable and at ease talking to the staff. They may have you take a test ride so if you're going, wear something comfortable. There are also many add-ons for your bike available in the store. The prices for helmets, baskets, water bottles... are normal for a bike store. I also felt the prices of the bikes were very reasonable compared to other places we investigated. I have no idea about their service department but other customers there were very happy with it. I'd recommend Erik's on East Washington Ave. and Chuck to anyone looking to educate themselves and/or buy a bike. read more

I dropped off my ski's mid day on Friday to just have the bindings adjusted. They asked if I needed them by a certain day and I said I was skiing Sunday afternoon. They told me that would not be a problem and said they would surely be done by Saturday afternoon (my invoice said I could pick up by Friday night). I finally called them Saturday (half hour before closing) to ask to make sure they were done by 2 pm on Sunday so I could ski. They proceeded to say that they would be done by sunday at close even tho I was promised by Sunday morning at the latest. I really wish I went to REI or someone else to do this since they would have thought 48 hours was enough to do this. It was a simple binding adjustment so nothing that takes more than 20 mins (less than that actually). When I asked if they could at least do 2:30-3 pm for being ready, I was simply told NO with no sympathy for ruining my ski day. I will never go back because of the lack of any sympathy about this. Edit to add: I had already emailed the email address the owner provided with no response. They did respond on Monday saying they would do the service for free but it was after I already took the skis to REI would did the service on the spot for less than half the price that Erik's was charging. Definitely will never go back to Erik's especially since REI made me a customer for life. read more

Lovely customer service experience. The staff who work here are, of course, really into biking. I am not, and it's obvious. I went in once to shop, test drive, and buy and a second time to pick up the bike after they did their service inspection. I worked with a couple different people. Both times the staff were really helpful, non-judgmental, and not looking to upsell me. I bought an e-bike, which is an investment. The store offers a 30-day ride guarantee, a good warranty, an affordable service plan, and an upgrade option within 2-years. If you're like me and intimidated when trying something new, especially in the fitness space, this store will put you at ease. read more

customer service was way below average for what you'd expect when you pay 2k for a bike. staff was untrained, when asked how to charge the E-Bike was told to read the instructions. No fitting, no thorough explanations on how to use the bike. Glad we knew what we wanted, because the staff Knew very little about the bike. read more

I called to get an approximate price for a basic bike tune up on my newish ebike. Right off the bat a not especially friendly person on the phone said if the ebike is not one of their bikes they wouldn't work on the electronics. That was fine with me as all I wanted was brake and derailleur adjustment and an approximate cost for it. He told me I would have to bring it in first. That was easier said than done for me. I explained that I was price shopping and he absolutely refused to give me even a ballpark figure. He actually sounded defensive from first answering the phone. This bike shop clearly either didn't need or want my business. This made my decision for today and the future very easy. read more

I bought a new bike in February, and spent over $6000 on it. I picked it up in April. I was told the bike was ready and serviced. When I I went on my first ride in May the gears were constantly slipping. I brought the bike back in June and was told it would have to go to the end of the line and would not be fixed for at least three weeks. The bike appeared not to be set up as they said, They had two months to set it up and did not do so. I expected to be put to the front of the line since it was a brand new bike and they did not set it up initially however they appeared not to care. read more

I was so happy to know they were open, I took my bike in for a tune up today. They took all precautions when I dropped my bike off and did an repair assessment before I left the store with a cost estimate. I recently bought a new bicycle at Erik's Bike Shop. After doing a little research on Erik's website I picked out a Specialized Ariel. Although they offer the option to order a bike online and pick it up at the store, I decided to visit the eastside Erik's. It's a significant purchase for me, so I didn't want to make a choice based on the online information alone. Fortunately, the bike I picked out was in stock at the store, so I could see it and take it for a spin. Pete was my salesman that day, and he was excellent. I haven't cycled much recently, so I was a little unsure about what I needed for a recreational bike. He was very knowledgeable regarding the bicycle and all the accessories I needed to purchase. He made recommendations on everything from a helmet, to a lock, a tire pump, lights, and more. I was quite impressed with his expertise on the products and his knowledge of cycling. Erik's installed all the accessories for me, including a seat I bought on Amazon and brought in to the store. The price of the bike includes a tune-up after 30 days, and a guarantee after the manufacturer's warranty expires. Since I don't have a bicycle rack for my car at this point and Madison is still in the throes of winter, I needed to get the bike home. When I went to pick up the bicycle Pete went over everything and helped me fit it inside my minivan. I didn't get this much dealer support when I bought my last car! Erik's is a full-service store, including everything from choosing a bike to keeping it running smoothly. Brought older mountain bike in for a tune up and tire repair, expecting to spend about $100. After several urgings, upsells, and sales pitches, ended up near $180. (They always add an additional $15 to bill 'just because', but say you may get it back. I didn't.) Told them I didn't want to spend more than the bike is worth (about $220). Received several more calls first asking to put on a new chain, and then new brake parts, and said no each time. Took two weeks. Was told in the end they could not guarantee bike was safe to ride upon returning to me because I turned down recommended work...but they didn't even mention these added items in the first estimate. Very disappointing. Total bill was $244. Learn from my mistake. Go to any other place to have your bike fixed. read more

Two years ago I was looking for a bike and went into Erik's bike shop at the old location on Whitney Way. The selection of beautiful Specialized bikes was excellent but the salesman was pushy and rude and made me feel really uncomfortable. I definitely got a hard sell so i walked out. Fast forward a few years and now I have an entry level road bike (purchased elsewhere). I took it to Erik's for some repairs. They did a LOT of work on the bike. I did some research after the fact and found out they replaced some things that did not need to be replaced. The work was faulty and my bike was a safety hazard after they were done with it. A buddy of mine fixed it up and it is riding smoothly now. I should have taken it to my friend to start with. read more

This year, I finally decided I would spend the money and buy a new snowboard instead of used. I spent hours online trying to find the perfect board and I finally found it on Erik's site. I ordered it and was super excited to receive it, as this would be my first real snowboard. Unfortunately, when I received it, the box revealed a completely different board than the one I had ordered. I was disappointed and reached out to customer service right away. Their response was that they didn't have the one I ordered, so I could keep the board and get a $30 gift card, or I could send the board back and get a refund. After all the effort I put in to find the board I wanted, this was the worst possible outcome I could've imagined. This is a huge letdown and I can't believe there was nothing else they could do to help. It's on them they had an out of stock product on their site, sent me a different one without informing me they no longer had the one I wanted, and offering little help in fixing their mistake. $30 for a mix up on an over $300 snowboard isn't going to fix the mistake. read more

I love this place!! Everyone is so great. Last summer I bought a bike at a garage sale and brought it in to Erik's to be tuned up! The service was incredible!! I Also bought a new recumbent bike from Erik's and Dennis was so great about helping me get the right bike for my needs. I love the bike and the amazing service. Most recently I've been researching getting an eliptical that you can ride outside. Mitch has been working with me and he's been amazing. The store is arranging to get this bike from another store so I can take it for a test ride. I really appreciate how helpful everyone one is. Whenever I come into the store or call everyone is so super friendly and helpful. Whether I come in to put air in tires, a bike tune up or buying a new bike it is just the best!! A premiere Specialized shop. While not a flagship or concept store, they have the most incredible selection of Specialized bikes I've ever seen in the Midwest. I purchased my wife's bike here, a Saphire FSR Comp, which is a fairly rare bike for the area. The manager spent time ensuring my wife had the proper fit, and that the bike was dialed to her wants and wishes. More importantly he didn't just DO everything, rather he took his time, EXPLAINED and SHOWED us how to tune everything in a practical and professional manner. He was very patient and knowledgeable, quickly narrowing down the options until we found the Specialized Roll 1-a great single speed that I ride every day. I never would have thought I could be so happy with a bicycle purchase. I was thoroughly impressed with ERIK'S, specifically Pete. I gave him a vague idea of what I was looking for and in about 3 minutes he had me test riding my new wheels. Pete listened, was courteous, and was not pushy. Disappointed by the lack of professionalism displayed by sales associates and rudeness/aggressiveness by the assistant manager on duty. We were made to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, and the condescending attitude towards me and the other two women I was with is appalling. Compared to the alternative bike shops in Madison, it would be foolish to put up with this type of poor and rude customer service. We all have our top three worst customer service experiences and this Erik's location is #1 on my list. read more

This review is long and thorough, but the reasoning behind my review will become very evident as you read. The first time i visited Erik's was last year. My Specialized brand bike was under 1 year old and the front gear had bent from the torque of my peddling. They told me it would be covered under warranty and they just needed to send in the paperwork. To sum up a long story, they kept giving me the run around (we need this paperwork, we need clear photos (because the first 2 sets were not clear enough....)). It took the ENTIRE month of July for me to get my bike back and they still charged for it because "abuse" isnt covered by the 1 year warranty... I guess peddling a bike is abusing it, this was news to me... I went back again this year to give them another chance. I figured it was probably a fluke and didn't want to rule them out because of 1 bad experience. My tune up was estimated at under $100 which included re-calibrating the rear derailleur. When I showed up at the shop, they charged me just under $130 because they replaced the derailleur. They chose to never call me, but instead took it upon themselves to render the service. While this was clearly wrong, I paid the bill and went on my way. I took the bike out a ride for 1 block and the chain jumps off. I reset it, and it jumps again. I returned to the store and they said the front derailleur needed to be replaced. I guess they never noticed this the first time around. They decide to cut me a deal and only charge me for parts. I went back today, paid for the service and the exact same thing happens. The chain jumps right off within a minute of riding. The man at the service desk acted as though this was MY FAULT. He was throwing things around and telling me how pissed off he was. He made me feel incredibly uncomfortable as though I had done something wrong. I will never return to Erik's after this. The level of professionalism is disgusting. read more

My derailleur was not working. I took it to the shop and was immediately greeted and taken back to repairs. The young man figured out the part I needed. I got a text a half hour later telling me the bike was ready. Again, I was greeted at the door by another fellow who wrote up the bill of less than $16., since he was able to bend the part back to perfection. The brakes were adjusted and the gears cleaned and oiled. What amazing service. read more
