But the star of any BBQ place should be the meat and the dry rubbed ribs I had were well named - they were dry, hard and were all bone, very little meat. We got two quarts of hash and rice and it was not eatable. The hash was for a family get-together and we had family coming in from out of town. The hash had a soured taste to it and was could not be eaten by anyone at our gathering. The hash was pickup 30 minutes before lunch and was served at our home and was still hot from restaurant. What a disappointing lunch today from this place. I asked them could I buy a whole brisket and they told me no I could only buy it by the pound. I guess if I knew how much the full brisket weighed I could've bought the whole thing. Glad I didn't buy the full brisket the 5 pounds I bought 1 pound of it was nothing but grease in the bottom of the pan. What happened to this place? It used to be my favorite BBQ place, but tonight was the worst. While the bbq had a good taste, there were many parts of it that were so hard they were not edible. The hash and rice were good. Now, about the sides ... I have never had worse mac & cheese. The noodles were spiral shape, there was very little cheese, the mixture was dry and tasteless. Awful. Also got the potato salad which was almost as bad. Hard to describe but I'll try. It was a very wet, runny mixture with lumps of mushy potato here and there. Also awful. I've been going there for years with some visits better than others and a general lack of consistency. I will probably try this place one more time to see if tonight was just a fluke, but if I receive another meal like this I will never go there again. read more

Pit smoked pork bbq with a splendid hash recipe I could eat with a shovel in both hands. My resident collard green expert raced about the greens. I don't eat collards. Pork has a good outside bark and a thick smoke ring. My sandwich took two hands to eat. The place is clean enough to eat inside and not have to run through the drive thru. Folks are friendly on both sides of the counter. The folks working here seem as happy to be here as we did and that made the bbq taste all that much better. A rib plate walked by and looked really good. We cannot wait to return. The potato salad was delicious, home made I am sure by somebody's momma who had made it before and knew how. There weren't any of those green olives in it that confused true bobbycue fans. Sometimes you've got to bare down on the meat and ease off the potato salad. They have it both ways here. read more

Sadly, once again, Augusta area BBQ misses. I stopped by for a chopped pork plate with sides and a sweet tea... you know, the standard BBQ meal. The sides were actually pretty good, so that's a win. The tea tasted fresh and not too sweet... another win. But the Q was lacking in flavor. Served dry, chopped finely, it was entirely too dry, not even moist pork. The spicy sauce was ok, but it did not marry well with the natural smoked pork flavor since there wasn't any natural smoked port flavor. I will keep looking. read more

They have best tasting spare ribs I have eaten in a BBQ place. The flavor of the wood is so good that I didn't want to cover it with sauce. They were juicy and cooked to perfection. I love BBQ. I did not love, or even like Mots BBQ. The fact that you couldn't smell the open pit BBQ pulling in, or even inside the restaurant should have been the first indication. The Hash and Rice was very odd, it was like they put the left over BBQ and tomato sauce in a blender, and I'm not sure it was supposed to be served cold. The chopped pork had no flavor at all (or should I say good flavor). My plate had a puddle of water from the meat, water- like dish water,not juice. Trying to locate one place, instead I stumbled upon Mot's. It was July 4th and they were serving cafeteria style rather than the usual counter service. For city barbeque, this wasn't bad. Not great or fantastic, but again, for being in a city it was nice. They serve ribs and chicken but I went for my usual pulled pork and stew. Being so close to South Carolina, they prepare things differently around these parts. And while it wasn't mustard based like you can find in Carolina, they didn't offer me Brunswick Stew like we do in much of Georgia. Instead they had hash (looks like Brunswick Stew, but doesn't have all the ingredients of the stew) and serve it over rice, just plain weird to those of us who would never associate rice with our stew. Mine was perfectly fine, but I prefer the way I grew up, Brunswick Stew and not with rice. The pulled pork was decent. It could have been fresher, but perhaps it was due to the fact they were serving in bulk for the holiday crowd. It definitely needed spicing up with any of their 3 sauces (mild, hot, sweet) and I ended up covering mine with sauce -- unusual for me as I normally only use a little. The meat, without the sauce, was just about as close to tasteless as it could get for fresh meat. My potato salad and peas were good sides. The tea was fine. I would not go out of my way for Mot's, but like I said, for a joint like this to be in the city scores points. read more

I'm not from this area or from this state. So I made an assumption. My assumption was since this was a BBQ place, the chicken on the menu was BBQ chicken. It was not. It was a boneless chicken breast fillet that had absolutely no seasoning or flavor to it. The Mac & cheese was the usual Mac & cheese in this area--noodles that have some type of globby cheese on it. It tasted how I thought it looked--not good. The French fries were hot but I was confused why a few were stuffed in a small fry bag that was placed on a plate. And the "hot" sauce on the chicken sandwich was not hot & tasted as bland as the chicken. My boyfriend said the hash & Rice was good but I thought the rice looked dry & hard. Eating out is definitely a treat for my family while I enjoy eating out it is an expense that we are getting to enjoy less and less, especially with restaurants adding on an additional expense of 3.5 percent if you pay with a credit card (wonder if that includes tip), I realize business owners can charge what they want at their place of business, I just don't think It's fair customers have to pay their credit card fees as that is the cost of doing business. If you don't want to take credit cards then you should be a cash only business! That would definitely put a hole in their customer traffic. As I while always pay with cash when I do go to the eateries they sometimes forget to ask and I am charged the fee anyway, I guess it's just getting that money anyway h they can! It took about 20 attempts to pay with my card to find out she was trying to do credit, first try with debit and it went through. This place is just not good. I'll never judge a BBQ place based on appearances. You'll never find a good place if you do. That being said, this place looks like it might be good from the outside. A fairly neglected and run-down exterior and interior led me to believe that the folks here focus all of their effort on the food. Sadly, that's simply not the case here at Mot's. I visited for lunch on a weekday around 11. I actually attempted to go to the Korean BBQ place next door but I found out at their door that it has terrible evening-only hours. So, I went to the next closest restaurant. A quick look around inside and it seated a handful of your typical blue collar types sitting around dinged up tables adorned with paper towel rolls. The place looked clean and had the common Luzianne tea dispensers next to a Pespsi soda fountain. On a small table next to that was a collection of barbecue sauces, hot sauces and plasticware. The menu has chicken, pork and ribs along with a bunch of fixed sides and a board with rotational sides and specials. I decided on the chicken and pork dinner combo plate. It seems the main part of the menu BBQ sandwiches. The plate comes with 2 sides and something called hash over rice. Oddly, the young man who prepared the meat whacked away at something I couldn't see. Shortly after my plate was completed I saw what all the chopping was for: they chop their offerings up into little bits before plating. You're asked if you want sauce and since I wasn't sure what anything tasted like, I asked for mild. For sides I had collards and coleslaw and the whole thing is served with a hamburger bun cut in half. From the looks of the other patrons, the sandwiches are served on the same buns. I grabbed some pepper vinegar sauce and filled my ice cup with sweet tea and sat down to dig in. The pork I had had no fat or bark on it. Not much smoke and not much flavor either. The chicken was a little better but not by much and the sauce didn't lend much of anything discernible, either. Hash, in this place anyway, is like scraps of meat pureed with sauce and the whole thing tastes like a semi-sweet Chef Boyardee ravioli mush dumped on Uncle Ben's instant rice. The collards were old, thick greens that were undercooked and tough but the flavor was pretty spot on. The sad part? The tea, coleslaw and hamburger bun were the highlight of the meal. Obviously, I'll never go back. When I told everyone at work about my experience, none had even heard of the place. The search for decent barbecue in Augusta continues since I compare all BBQ to the Circle M in Eastland, TX which served the best 'cue I've ever had in my life. One thing that I observed while people watching for the hour I lingered and choked down the grub was that not a single non-white person entered the premises. I don't know if that means anything and it didn't influence my review one way or the other but I did find it interesting. Long story short, don't bother. read more

I will start it this way. We went in hungry for good barbecue and left still hungry for good barbecue. My wife had shredded pork with greens and mac n cheese. I had the half pound of ribs with greens and broccoli salad. The pork had no flavor, no smoke, nothing. The ribs, while falling off the bones tender, again, had no flavor, no smoke, nothing. I like that they have hash & rice instead of Brunswick stew - I think that's a regional thing?? - they have a variety of sides which are all pretty good, the fries can sometimes be a little undercooked, but if you ask them for "well done" fries they are happy to oblige. Nothing fancy about the inside, but it's clean and that's really more important to me! To be quite honest, not the best bbq I've ever had. The meat was dry and chopped. I don't know why places chop their meat versus pulling. Chopping the meat causes all of the juices to run out thus made this particular pork dry and seemingly tasteless. People are friendly here. The mac and cheese and baked beans are always good. For a small barbecue joint it has nice seating, rushed for time and it's easy to eat and go. This is georgia not South Carolina so it's georgia bbq where we do prefer hash and rice over Brunswick stew. They do offer both options though. Banana pudding was great!
