To try snowboarding for the first time, my family wanted an affordable day trip, an easy drive from NYC. We got the impression that Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ would probably be a little overwhelming for us first-timers so we chose Mount Peter because of their reputation as a family-friendly, beginner-friendly place, and their Christmas break offer: free beginner lessons with the purchase of a $40 lift ticket. We took the drive up there which was peaceful and scenic. The parking lot was small and not organized. Filling out the paperwork went pretty smoothly. Rentals were $30 per person. The equipment they gave us didn't really suit us well. The boards were too short for our weight but we made do with what they had. Also, the boards were in poor condition, lacking any wax and a proper edge.The previous day's rain had made the parking lot muddy and the snow conditions terrible, but that wasn't Mount Peter's fault. If we had been able to reschedule our planned trip, we would have. Our free beginner lesson was taught by a teenager, maybe 15 to 17 years old. He was sweet, nervous, and trying his damn hardest to teach our group of four. We later found out that we were only his second lesson. We saw a group of adults wearing red Mount Peter logo jackets who we assumed were teachers for the private/paid lessons. So when you go there for a free beginner lesson, be aware that you will be taught by a teen. The "bunny hill" has a tow rope for a lift, which runs along the edge of the hill. We found it impossible to use. With the rain-melted snow that had become slippery ice, and the icy edge sloping outward toward muddy grass, rocks and trees, our snowboards kept sliding out from under us and we were constantly, nerve-wrackingly veering off that edge. Often my friend's son ended up in the dirt. But even though the hill got icier as the day went on, we had a blast. We slipped, fell, rolled, flipped and face-planted, but we laughed. Other beginners were doing the exact same thing and we all cheered each other on, giving a thumbs-up whenever someone made it to the bottom on their feet. This place is definitely family-friendly and if you go often you get to know the people who work there. The bathrooms are nice. I've heard they were recently redone. The cafeteria however is in need of some serious help. The food was worse than school cafeteria food and it had me wishing I could have been eating tasteless hospital food. A huge, thick plastic bag of chicken noodle soup concentrate was dumped into a pot of hot water, bag and all. The popcorn chicken nuggets tasted very processed and fake. The premade burgers and nachos were like movie theater food. We were starving, cold and had no other choice. So I got the popcorn chicken and a soup. I spilled the soup on my coat sleeve and boy did my coat stink. The SMELL was even artificial, and every time I got a whiff of it I wanted to puke. But no one got sick or had a bathroom emergency so all was well and we went back out onto the ice to throw ourselves down the hill a few more times until we had had enough. read more

My 8-year old son fell off the chair lift yesterday as we were getting ready to ski... From a height of about 6 or 8 feet. The chair had not been tipped for us and I could not pull him up on to the seat. The Mount Peter employees offered to check him out. He was not hurt as far as I could tell and I will take him to a doctor tomorrow. My son got understandably scared and he refused to go on the lift again. I went to the ticket office and requested a refund or changing to tubing tickets instead. Rather banally, the young man said the 'lift tickets' are really 'snow tickets' that entitle the holder to go on the snow on the grounds, not just the lifts. He said the tubing operation was run separately and the tickets will not be changed. :( I don't believe my son was hurt as a result of the fall from the lift and I am not planning to sue Mount Peter. However, I will not take my family to ski there again. Ever. If you care about your family's safety and fair treatment, please consider another place that takes better care. read more

These people are horrifically rude and should have never been in any kind of business that involves kids. I signed up for their ski program through my children's school and they are forcing me not to get season pass, but instead buy individual tickets because they are going to make few more bucks on my child. My contract states I want season pass, and they won't sell it to me! They do not care that they are making my 9 year old stand in line for longer than she is going to ski with her school. I guess that is what they want: to make you stand in line rather than ski. So if you are in the mood for waiting to ski, this is a perfect place to go. If you actually want to ski, run!!!!! I tried to be so nice and explained to them that my family is coming from the Tuxedo Ridge (which closed for a year) and that we are coming with the school program, where my child is unlikely to ski on their mountain except for the time that she is there with the school. I explained that in my contract signed through school I clearly state that I want ski pass. They have the contract, they saw it, and then they declined to follow through because they make more money on the tickets. How awful! Being a new customer, being a parent, being a child in a school program, being nice....it did not matter to whoever owns this ski place. I asked to speak to one of the supervisors, who did not want to talk to me. So, if you have any other place to go and ski, please do. This is not a family friendly place. In fact, seeing how they interacted with me, I am so terrified to even have my child ski there this year. Unfortunately, I have no choice for this year because of Tuxedo Ridge closing, but hopefully next year, it will be a different story. So, if you have a choice, which I don't at the moment, do not ski at Mr. Peter. read more

Not worth it. It took over 2 hours to pay and get your rentals. They had more people managing the line then helping you with equipment. By the time that we got on the mountain, it was almost time to get home. read more

Under new management and is now AWFUL! Insanely long lines (2 hours with kids no thanks). Constantly being shuttled to 3 diferent building all of which are overcrowded. Overpriced is an understatement. My son is signed up for 7 weeks series and I dread coming here. Always gives me a headache. Save your money and drive a little longer to Catamount. read more

Went yesterday with 2 girls age 5 and a boy age 7, and were very disappointed in the "ski school" and the effort by those in charge to resolve our complaints. All my 4 kids (now grown) learned in ski schools at Windham, Hunter NY and Mt. Snow, Vermont. I expected my grandchildren and niece to get an experience of skiing in the 3 hr group lesson which cost a total of $600. They had a very nice young instructor but were standing at the top and only went down the hill once in 2 hours. From the lodge we watched them sit, stand, take helmit off and look around. I went to customer service, a woman went up to check why they weren't going down. Her response to me was, "The instructor is absolutely doing a good job but the kids are fooling around and they are happy. We want children to be happy." I told her we paid for the kids to learn how to ski that they could be happy at a park. The manager finally sent up another instructor to help with the group of 6 and then they finally went down the bunny hill 4 times in the remaining 20 minutes. Although all 3 children had to stand at the top of the bunny hill for 2 hours we were only reimbursed with a free lift ticket for 2 kids. We will go back but at the suggestions of 2 other patrons we will put them in private lessons. Our suggestion of having 2 instructors for beginner groups especially ages 5-7 instead of having all the instructors lined up doing nothing was met with a response of, "We have to make a living too." read more

We took our kids tubing here and they had a blast. Price was very reasonable. The thing that stood out the most to me was the friendly staff who were extremely patient and helpful with the little ones. Since we were there with a six year old and three year old, it made all the difference. read more

Incredibly displeased with my visit at Mount Peter. Prices are ridiculous, long lines to get lift tickets and/or rentals, SO unorganized there are people scrambling everywhere AND they make you wait outside for 30 minutes to start the process. A woman behind me in line complained to one of the owners stating that it was too cold to have customers wait on line outside and that they should expand the indoor area. The owner replied by stating that they had just installed a one million dollar lift, and to be patient as they are a small family owned business and if she didn't like waiting in the cold she could go somewhere else. I couldn't believe my ears, she was so unbelievably rude! If I wasn't there for a birthday get together, I would've left right then and there. There were only 5 runs open, it was so packed you couldn't even enjoy skiing/snowboarding down the mountain. They were running ski lessons all day and were so unorganized. There was no separate area so there were kids and adults falling all over the place as you're trying to get in line for a lift. Not to mention I witnessed a ski instructor crash into a caution sign. Needless to say, I would never recommend anyone to take lessons there lol. For a small family owned business, they should appreciate and accommodate all of their customers, which they don't at all. On that note, I will not be back here. I'd rather give my money to places that have real snow on real mountains that aren't filled with beginners doing "the pizza" on skis all the way down a black diamond. read more

This is a great place for learning! It is a really friendly mountain and the staff is incredible. I highly recommend this mountain!!

After a long ride to tuxedo ridge to take the kids tubing found out tubing was running slow due to the fresh snow.(little upset and disappointed) after purchasing online. Asked to speak to manager to see if we could change to another time.(operations manager came down and offered us a Learn to ski package. ( went out of her way to acomadate my kids) had such a wonderful time. Staff were so friendly and stopped to give advice. It was a great day out and the kids were thrilled. read more

Went snow tubing only. $75 for 3 of us for 2 hours. Lift tix are $49 for a whole day, so tubing is very over priced. Should be $25 for 4 hours, and this way we would have walked over to lodge, taken a break, etc. Tubing area is fine, could have been a longer run. Fun once but probably not again. read more
