First, i'm upset that this place doesn't have 5 stars; the reviews that weren't 5 stars must've been a mistake by the reviewer. I digress. My coworker and I stopped in for breakfast yesterday, we are a couple blue collar boys and were towing a trailer so it's sometimes a pain to find a spot that has parking for us. Not here! They have a whole lot of space right next to it! Off to a great start. There was no wait to be seated (which in hindsight is miraculous) and, in fact, we were the only two people in there. I ordered the french toast, some eggs + coffee and my partner got the breakfast burrito. They looked amazing.... i'm not kidding when I say that this was the best French toast I have ever had. no hyperbole here whatsoever. I'm 40 and I thought I had already had the best French toast of my life long ago but I never imagined that one could even reach this level of mastery of such a simple breakfast food. My Buddy also confirmed that his brekky burrito was the best of his life (he is nearly 30 and has had many BBs in his day). It doesn't end there.... THE FOLLOWING DAY We were coming back from the same job site, this time around lunch time. We figured "hey, breakfast slapped, let's see what they can do for lunch". Our parking spot (it's our spot now) was open for the truck and trailer, our table was open(ours) and again we were the only two guys in here. I had the best burger of my life and my m8 had the best pastrami dip of his! This place is batting a thousand. On top of the incredible food, we had two different servers both days and they were both awesome. Like an NHL goalie, sometimes they don't make saves if they haven't seen rubber in a while, so when we came in and the place was empty I thought they might be off their game, and understandably so, but that was not the case. I was even thinking to ask for a refill in a to-go cup since we still had some road ahead of us and before I could even ask, our server asked if I would like one! service was great AND fast. if you told me there was an inter-dimensional portal in the kitchen that hands them perfect food from a dimension where deliciousness is standard, I wouldn't question it. This place should have a Michelin Star or 2 because there isn't much else out here but it is definitely worth the drive, you can come eat then look for cool rocks or something. I almost hesitated to write this review because I like the fact that it was nice and quiet or maybe they have a busy season and I'm just a n00b, either way, on a scale of 1-5 this place is a 10. read more

Fantastic food and service! Every waitress/hostess was so warm and welcoming. We came here for Father's Day and even though it was a little busy, they were all so sweet and accommodating. We'd been driving and just saw this little cafe on the side of the road. It doesn't look like much from the outside but it was actually a lot bigger and so cute on the inside with a cabin vibe. Food came fast and was so delicious! Proportions were great for the price and we brought our food home. Only come here if you want the worse customer service in area. Rude staff, rude servers, not worth the wait. I've been here on 3 separate occasions with my family and always get treated like utter crap. Came here today bcus it was only place open in tri-community, big mistake. Don't let the weathered exterior detour you from stopping in! Inside you are welcomed with friendly staff, delicious food and a clean and cozy restaurant. We were a group of 7- 4 adults and 3 kids- the adults had 3 deliciously fresh salads (big enough to share) and a wrap that also was a generous portion. The kids had chicken tenders, cheeseburger and spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic bread. Everything was delicious and tasted and looked fresh and homemade. Walking up to the door seeing all the "Help Wanted" signs did not fill me with a lot of confidence. However, there were cars within the makeshift parking lot safely tucked beside the busy Pearblossom Highway. We were warmly greeted and quickly seated by the hostess/waitress on duty. Mountain Top Cafe has been in the same building, on top of the hill outside Phelan, since the restaurant began operation back in 1940. Over the years, the restaurant has been known for delicious food, reasonable prices, along with friendly service, and is a favorite eating spot for locals, truckers, and travelers on CA State Highway 138. The restaurant opened in this building, at this location back in 1940, and except for a few minor details, such as the prices, very little has changed over the last 78 years. The hospitality and delicious food has remained unchanged over the years, along with the stone fireplace, which is still the only heat source in the restaurant. The breakfast menu offers many choices and covers all bases. After scanning the menu, I settled on chorizo and eggs, which seems appropriate when you're enjoying breakfast in the high desert country. I ordered the "2 Egg Breakfast," which gives you many choices of meat, toast and potatoes. Chorizo was offered as a meat choice, so how could I refuse? Normally chorizo is mixed with eggs, but I asked it be served separately, as that's how I prefer it. I ordered eggs over easy, which is my de facto standard, along with hash browns instead of country potatoes. Sharon recited the toast choices and one of the choices was a biscuit and gravy, so I stopped right there. This breakfast was simply delicious, and kept me going all the way until dinner. The photo doesn't do the size of the breakfast justice, but you get a lot of perfectly cooked hash brown potatoes at Mountain Top Cafe. Such a great breakfast! I expect the only MAJOR changes to Mountain Top Cafe since 1940 as been the advent of electricity in the late 1940's, and much higher, 2018 prices. Oh, I bet they didn't have a web site back in 1940! Other than that, the building is rustic, the fireplace is ordinal, and like always, the food is delicious and the service is friendly. High desert dining at it's best, on CA State Highway 138, just outside of Phelan. Everything about this restaurant is great, including the mountain top location, the rustic dining room, the friendly service, and the delicious food. This restaurant rates a solid four stars, and should be included on your things-to-do-list when you're in the area. read more

Some places you travel by daily and fail to notice or venture into. Such was the case for Top of The Mountain Cafe. The wood floors and ceiling and huge decorative fireplace in this tiny Cafe definitely reminded me of my uncle's house...just beautiful. Luckily, I was here early enough to get a comfortable seat next to the fireplace and window. Nice 48 degrees, siting by the fireplace although not literally, it still gives you a warm welcome. The lone waitress was delightfully cheerful and was able to accommodate everyone. She did explain a bit of the history of the restaurant which is quite interesting. Stopped by here for breakfast on Sunday morning. I don't know if it was ill luck or bad timing on our part, but our visit was a mix of good and bad -- I can't, in good conscience, give the place five stars. Let me explain... 1) Right when we walked in, no one greeted us or uttered a single welcoming word. The wait staff ignored us completely. We came in at the same time as a family of 12 and an older couple and we were ALL ignored. So we all just kind of stood there, feeling awkward, until a man from the group of 12 asked how long the wait was and they were told the wait would be 20-30 mins. The server wasn't friendly at all and even though we were standing near the register, pretty much in front of the two servers, we were still ignored. Okay, so they had a huge table of 12+ to take care of along with other tables, but they could have at least greeted the newcomers when we walked in! 2) So my husband and I debated whether we should even bother staying, and as we were about to walk out, a 3rd server walked out from the back, looked at us and asked: "Was anyone looking for me?" We told her, uhm, we just want to eat. No one's talked to us yet. She asked us how many people in our group and then said that a table that was being cleared off was for us. So.. We decided to stay. In my head, I began to tally the number of stars I would give for my review. So far, 1 star for being ignored when we walked in (since yelp won't let me give zero stars). 3) Once we were seated, our server (who was actually very nice) took our order and we proceeded to wait. And wait. And wait. And wait.............. 4) I noticed that a group of 3 dudes walked in and started cleaning the bar area which still had glasses and used cutlery from the previous customers. They sat and waited for someone to bring them a menu or to acknowledge their presence. After ten minutes they stood up and walked out. 5) Our food arrived -- finally!!! For the food alone, I would give the place 4 stars. It was good, very filling, but nothing out of this world. Our server kept my coffee cup filled, but I had to stand up and ask for a refill on my husband's beer :( but because she was very friendly and sweet, 5 stars for her. 6) Once we were finished eating, I went up to the register to pay. The lady who had, in the beginning of this interesting adventure - finally acknowledged our presence - informed me that she was in the middle of "bank" -- I guess, counting the till or something? I wasn't sure. Anyway, our nice server apologized but I would have to wait until after the lady was finished with what she was doing before I could pay. My family had already put on their coats and had started getting up to leave, but we had to go back to our seats and wait... And wait... And wait.... And wait...... 7) By the time we paid and made our leave, we had been there almost 2 hours. I can understand being busy, but breakfast shouldn't take that long! Two stars for the long wait times! Okay, so total # of stars: 1 (initial greeting or lack thereof) + 4 (good food) + 5 (nice server) + 2 (waiting.. and waiting.. and waiting) = 12 stars ÷ 4 = 3!!!! read more

Well I cannot comment on the food, did not stay to eat anything. I went there with some family members who moved up to Wrightwood recently and we have been trying all the local places. The service here is terrible! The Waitress was down right rude to us. We got up and left and will never go back. Great stop for breakfast after our hike. Coffee is amazing as you can taste that they grind the beans fresh. Loved the veggie omelette as had huge slices of fresh veggies and just so good. The Great; Military/Law Enforcement DISCOUNTS!!! The beer on tap was cheap "Bud Light" at $2/each. The food was great and the side garlic fries where enough for two hungry men to share so to speak quantity-wise. The only thing that's bad about it is it sucks trying to get to it with all the dummies on the 138 construction areas trying to run you off the road getting to the Place.
