We took our chances going without a reservation (we were travelling) on a Saturday night. We were seated quickly, and our waiter took out drink order. When the beverages arrived, we ordered dinner- Steak with Au poivre sauce for him, Shrimp Scampi for me. They allowed me to sub potato and veg for the pasta which was appreciated. Everything was cooked properly and the sauce on the steak was delicious, The scampi sauce was a bit lacking as there were very few slivers of roasted garlic but extra lemons were delivered on request and added flavor. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. This review would have been 5 star had the waiter returned at the end of the meal. We watched for him for so long I thought he might have quit! I overheard another waiter telling his table that they don't work in sections so often have tables in several different rooms. Management might want to rethink that policy. read more

We were passing through town and we heard that this restaurant was fantastic and don't miss it. We were not disappointed. It is a very pretty and well appointed atmosphere and the service was wonderful. I had Chicken Francese, which was a perfect combination of Lemon, Butter and Wine. My husband had Chicken Parmesan and the Marinara sauce was so good. We also had Calamari that was very tender and crispy. All these dishes were done to perfection and brought out to the table with great timing. Just can't say enough about this place. Too bad we don't come through here that often. If you're even a teensy bit of a foodie...this is not for you ... I had grilled salmon... medium sized piece, slathered with packaged dill sauce & rubbery mixed beans slathered in fake butter...the same fake butter on the pasta side...salad with "bleu cheese" crumbles ($1.50 extra) which were maybe aged for 5 minutes cuz this was NOT bleu cheese..atop a salad 1/2 full with the hard green stalks of a head of lettuce... We make reservations for 13 people for 4pm and told we have to wait for our table. Thirty minutes late and we enter a half full room. Then we wait to order drinks. Then wait some more to get them. When they get here there is some garbage in our drinks. All we get is a mumbled sorry. No manager to ask if there is something they could do. Nothing. Strike two. Finally get to place our orders, at $30.00 a plate. Wait some more to get the soup. I got cream of turkey 2 small pieces of meat and a watery soup, in a tiny bowl. My salad was bitter, with a lot of brown pieces. Dinner finally hits the table, an hour after sitting down. Mind you business is still light. Most of us gets the turkey. When my plate hits the table, last. All I could think about is " Where's the meat? " Thankfully the bread was good. I visit entire meal for drink refills. Let's talk about the food, canned gravy, salty. Canned cranberry sauce (jelly). Mashed potatoes, with water. Green beans were great. Waited for coffee and dessert and no drinks on the table. Can we say " Understaffed?" Strike three! If you go here often and like it. You need to go anywhere else, then you will see a better place to eat. I don't mind spending good money to eat. So a quick Google search turned up The Mountain View Chalet! Now, we've driven past (on I-78) hundreds of times, but never really thought twice about going in. I have to say, this is one of NJ's best unhidden, family operated Gems! (it's RIGHT THERE) We were seated without reservations. The service was fantastic. Our waitress (Dawn) was prompt, courteous and delightful. We ordered some wonderful apps (Lump Crab Cocktail and Lobster Mac 'n Cheese) and shared a delicious pasta dish. Came here for Thanksgiving. Made a reservation and was still told to wait 30mins although the place wasn't packed. Finally sat down and everything was expensive. The $30 thanksgiving dinner special came with a soup, salad, Turkey (or ham or duck), dessert, and a coffee. Portions were small. Food was decent but could've been much better. There was a questionable substance in the iced tea, so do not order. Service was meh. They seem understaffed and not very nice. It may be because of the holiday... but I don't know. Overall I wouldn't come back under any circumstance. Food is not worth the money. Just go to the Clinton Diner down the road. Better prices, better food, bigger portions. read more

Service was great, food was decent, decor was tragic! This place needs an extreme makeover. If you can get past the tacky brass chandeliers all over, the outdated dingy green carpet, and the tacky wallpaper then you'll love it. The menus were dirty (and not to mention outdated as well), and the tables were much too close together. Food was so/so nothing to write home about- drinks were ok. Dessert though was amazing... we got the steamed chocolate pudding with coconut ice cream. Overall I gave it 3 stars because of the location, the view and the service. I want to thank the Mountain View Chalet so much for catering my baby shower last weekend! We always go to the Chalet for special family occasions and this was no exception. The food was perfect. Demos helped us come up with a great menu with three different entree options and not only delivered the food that day, but also helped us set up at my home. He took care of every detail, even the bread you could tell was freshly baked that morning. The clams casino in particular were a hit (as always). Passing through Asbury, NJ, we stopped at this restaurant for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the entire restaurant. The food was great. We had the raw clams as an appetizer. My husband had the shrimp scampi and Italian wedding soup. I had the seafood fra diavolo. Our children had the teres steak Caesar and the baked lobster Mac n cheese. Our waiter was amiable and even gave our little daughter a bouquet of flowers as we left. They put the 4 of us in a tight table with the chairs close to the table behind us. Every server/buss boy/etc. that went by banged my chair. The worst was the fat maître d. If your fat and don't fit then the tables shouldn't be so close, He banged my chair every time. In addition my wife ordered a medium steak that came out very rare. Then she and the other server proceeded to do other things like take someone else's order, the other one started wiping down the bar, then she would go to the cash register. Another great dinner at the mountain view chalet... This was only our third visit but we wanted to make sure our impressions were consistent and they were. The service was great, the food was incredible. I had a dish from the special menu and my husband had the New York strip steak with blue cheese all of it was incredible. The lights finally dimmed slightly midway through dinner which made for a nicer ambience. Maybe it was because our date night started early at 6 PM there was a fair amount of families with young children which made for a little bit of a noisy atmosphere at first! read more

An old-style restaurant with a grey haired crowd. The menu is very heavy on the classic seafood options.The selections are like an upscale diner menu minus the sandwiches. The bar seemed like it could accommodate any request and the full wait staff(host, busboy, server, and waiter) were all very professional. My main complaint was the atmosphere. It smells like a banquet hall. There are separate rooms for parties and the entire restaurant smells like a catering hall. The decor doesn't match the price of the dishes. The quality of the dish is worth the money, but not the atmosphere. With a renovation of the layout and diner-esque decor, this place could be a high scale restaurant. read more

However the server failed to ask the kitchen and the dill sauce contained flour. What kind of dill sauce contains flour??? Celiacs cannot eat flour. Get your menu straight and employees educated. I made it very clear to the server I could not consume flour. Please be aware this will cause sickness in a matter of hours. read more

We went there for Mothers day brunch at about 5pm. There were 4 of us. The only option was a buffet. The food looked and tasted as though it had been out all day. The cost was $55 per person. My family went here for Thanksgiving dinner this year, and found it to be a great value for the price. It was only $30 for a complete meal, which included a turkey, duck or ham entree, soup, salad, dessert, and coffee. Food was good overall. Service was also good, considering it was a busy holiday.
