Due to circumstances beyond my control, we arrived at noon on Thursday, breakfast ended at 11am and so we pivoted to lunch items that included a Boars Head cheesesteak, chips and pickle plus a really tasty cheeseburger . As we were leaving, my husband decided on a large chocolate peanut butter milkshake which he deemed awesome. (Thanks Todd for stepping in and making one) We stopped at our pre planned list of farm stands and headed home. Very next day, Friday, up at dawn to get a few chores out of the way so we could head out to Gronsky's for the day #2 breakfast deadline! I prefer sitting at the counter and watching their magician, Tyler, assemble the food for orders, crack open the eggs, drop the pancake batter in the proper corner and keep all meats aligned for the plates. He's the king of that kitchen and each one of those servers is the queen doing the hustle, bustle, slide to the left, back up and move forward like square dancers on the move. From the Taylor ham, provolone and fried egg sandwich on that FRESH Kaiser roll to the omelette with those delicious home fries and my PEACH PANCAKE . . . . all of it was their special take on breakfast served their way. Almost 50 years, folks! Prices are absolutely reasonable for how the food is prepared and presented, quality ingredients cooked according to diners' specifications. What more can you ask for? It was very busy when we got there, but they had three employees working between the walk-up window and the inside counter, so the line kept moving. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside, which made it easy for our group to find places to sit and enjoy our ice cream. Even with the crowd, the staff did a good job keeping up with the orders and everything moved along efficiently. If you're looking for a classic spot to grab some ice cream on a warm evening, Gronsky's is definitely worth a stop.

I work in Times Square so I usually frequent fine dining establishments in the city, but my home is North Jersey so I am acutely aware that there are some hidden gems in this state. Last week, I was at the Saddle River Inn in Saddle River and was blown away. But this place is far, far, even more exceptional. Greatest dining experience ever. Called the restaurant due to a last-minute cancelation in my party. Evan, a manager, was super helpful in waiving any cancelation fees. It's BYOB and there's a brewery across the street that apparently does takeout. I just brought beer from my house. They gave me chilled glasses and a bucket of ice to keep my refreshments chilled. Onto the ambience. You walk in and it's a nice, cozy little place with tables and a bar top with an open kitchen layout behind it. You can see all the food that's cooking and the presentations that go behind each dish - all live in front of you. The chef's were busy but always obliged when I said hey or asked a question. I tried the 5 course chef's tasting menu for $125. You get a little bit of all of the best flavors coming out of the kitchen. And the flavors are always changing. They source their ingredients from local farms. First came out complimentary course #1 - all I remember is it had crudo in it. Then course #1 - gulf shrimp with squid. This is the point where I decide no matter how else dinner plays out, I'm coming back. What fresh ingredients and creative flavor pairings. Next was course #2 - duck confit spring roll. It's just a smaller portion of what's regularly on their menu. This may have been my favorite item of the night. Next was wood fired octopus in tagliatelle pasta. After that, I believe, was complimentary course #2 - what appeared to be a caesar salad. Anything they make is delicious. Finally, I had an American wagyu strip as the fourth course. Absolutely delectable. At this point, I'm in Heaven. But I'm not quite yet full and ready for my dessert - profiteroles - one of my favorite desserts. I was looking forward to it from the moment I walked in and saw it listed on the tasting menu. I only eat 1 meal a day so when I finally eat, I eat a lot. A normal person would be full at this point, but I wanted more. I also couldn't help but think it might have something to do with me not wanting to leave and just try anything this kitchen made. So I ordered more. I asked for their regular menu and ordered some more duck confit spring rolls and some type of pork belly entree. Quick note - the pork belly entree was not good. You have to take the losses on the chin to make the wins matter more. Pork belly over beans? It was like bbq ribs meets an English breakfast. Please get rid of that, respectfully. After 3 bites, I didn't want any more so I quietly flagged down my server, Kat, and told her please quietly take this, I fully intend to pay for it since I ordered it; it's just no good. And I had been raving to her about every dish up until that point. So she insisted that she'd take it off the check. I insisted I'd pay, she kept insisting, so I relented. That's really good customer service. Now time for dessert. I wish I could say I was ending on a better note but the Profiteroles - which I mentioned is a favorite dessert of mine - massive disappointment. After everything else was put together for care, I got notes of freezer for this last one - especially the pumpkin part. I love this restaurant and I intend on returning as soon as possible, so please don't take offense to my constructive criticism. I applaud your efforts to infuse different flavors together. It is working wonders for you. Keep it up. I'm gonna share pictures of everything, including the menu. But the last 2 things I'll talk about are the cost and the service. With the pork belly entree taken off, it was just the 5 course tasting menu, an order of duck confit spring rolls, and a $6 double espresso. The total came out to $168 after taxes. I tipped $168. That's right. 100%. In a world where people like to dock tip percentages from their precious "20%" for what they perceive to be a lack of good service, let's normalize going above 25% for exceptional service. Not everyone can afford 100% like me, but next tip tip your servers 30-35% for exceptional service. As a former server in my heyday, I promise it'll mean more to them than the few extra dollars to you. And exceptional service is what I got. This historic location was a rest and play stop for literary and theater New Yorkers in the 20s and 30s and probably beyond -- check out the famous signatures and notes in the albums in the main living room. The owners keep a handful of rescued farm animals (pot-bellied pigs, mini ponies, goats), and it is clear they are well cared for. It is a busy place for big wedding events now, and so we like to stay during the week. It is very relaxing to walk around the grounds. We saw a giant heron in the pond and deer strolling. There are so many nice places to sit outside with a bottle of wine and a book or snacks. Rooms are very unique and comfortable. You have a lot of different personalities to choose from: lofts, cabins, barn spaces, etc. Many have jacuzzis which can provide your evening entertainment, lol. We have not eaten in the restaurant because our top restaurant on earth is very close by, but when it was closed, Josh gave us great recommendations. And he made a lovely tofu scramble for breakfast as a special request. One sweet touch: despite checking the room, we left without my spouse's expensive phone charger. Housekeeping found it and ran after us before we could drive off without it. She did not have to do that. Always tip your housekeeping staff. The extended Covid months have been very hard on inns, restaurants, and event spaces, and it must be stressful for them as things come back to life when so many events have been postponed. It is wonderful to be back out again. We will return -- a lot.

I have also enjoyed their wraps, bowls, and sandwiches. And they even have burgers and hot dogs, too. GfL is my new spot for takeout (order ahead online to save time!) before heading to the airport. The chunky chicken wrap saved me when my flight back to the West coast (already a long journey) was delayed by several hours and I was starving. The cafe also has a number of yummy desserts displayed in the case that are great to-go. GfL also offers a "Meal Prep" option where you can order food on a weekly or monthly basis. Service is friendly and efficient, but they are sometimes understaffed. Try to be patient and nice, and your tasty food will be out soon enough. Sustenance was in order, and I wasn't looking for anything too heavy so this brunchy coffee spot seemed ideal - and it pretty much was. There was ample parking in the lot behind the building, but the place was pretty packed when I walked in. Even though I had to weave through a crowd to get to the counter, there wasn't an actual line and I was able to immediately order. Cute spot; looks like it's been fairly recently redone (last few years?) and I enjoyed the bathroom, which features very classy artwork of aristocratic felines on the walls. The soap dispenser is in a weird/awkward spot far to the left of the sink where it's almost impossible not to drip directly onto the floor, but at least they have one. I decided on the Protein Berry Crunch Toast and a slice of their Lemon Blueberry Loaf. Both were very tasty/hit the spot. I got the slice immediately upon ordering and considered getting a second one while I waited for the Toast. Cooler heads prevailed. It felt at least a little less naughty than that lemon loaf that Starbucks has, primarily because of the lack of icing (it has powdered sugar on top instead) and was moist; not too crumbly. The Toast came out probably in 10 minutes or so, which I think is perfectly acceptable given that it was clearly busy in there with both in-person and online orders. For the most part, I thought the combo of ingredients worked really well together; I was a little apprehensive about the cheese coming in, but it's pretty subtle and only dominant in a few random bites. I think the weakest part of the toast is the blueberries, but that's honestly more of a personal palate call than anything else - it just didn't totally mesh with the cheese for me and didn't have the vibrant taste of the other included fruits. But same token, part of the optics of this dish hinges on that blue. Everything is a balancing act. I'd totally get that again in a pinch, especially if I wasn't looking for a giant meal. The service/hospitality was very good, almost too good. After I finished my loaf, I left its wrapper and my number card (for them to locate me for the rest of my order) on the table while I used the restroom, and they were both picked up by an employee doing a sweep. That's arguably on me, who temporarily abandoned a table that looked like it had nothing but garbage on it. Even though it required 10 seconds worth of troubleshooting to get my number back, I don't know how you don't consider that a positive on the part of the staff. The same guy took my "real" garbage on my way out before I had a chance to bring it back inside. Very friendly, pleasant staff. Nice spot if you happen to be around. Will try to sample the coffee options on my next foray.
