What a fantastic adventure and crew. My fiancé and I did the lower box canyon trip on the Piedra River as part of an engagement surprise and had a blast. The scenery and rapids were great. The raft guides, in particular our raft guide Andy was extremely professional and laid back at the same time. We were impressed by their level of concern for safety. Stopping to check out and plan the approach to the two class IV rapids. We were also very pleased to see how well all the guides worked together as a team and supported each other. As a bonus, one of the guide brought a cake to celebrate our engagement! What a treat. They also took pictures that they shared with us and gave great recommendations of things to do back in Durango. From the bus ride, to the great wraps that were provided for lunch, to the crazy fun rapids, the trip was everything and more than what we expected. We took the four hour family rafting trip with MWR in June 2016. This is a pretty tame white water rafting trip with the rapids ranging from Class I-III and kids as young as three can go on the trip. The water levels are high on the Lower Animas this year (2016), which elevates the danger a bit. The MWR guides gave us the standard safety briefing before the trip, but then reminded us repeatedly during the trip. During our trip, we hit a series of Class III rapids and all of the MWR rafts pulled over to let anyone under 13 years old out. MWR had a photographer there who helped the kids out of the rafts, took pictures of the rest of us rafting the portion of the river, and showed the kids where to walk to meet up with the rafts after the rapids were over. Our guide explained that's why they feel comfortable letting younger children raft because they have a process worked out to let them walk around any dangerous parts. Our guide, Dillon, was very safety conscious and reminded us repeatedly of the safety measures we must follow to have a safe, but fun trip. For a more challenging ride, MWR has higher age requirements plus all rafters must attend a special safety briefing the day before their trip. read more

My family and I went rafting with Tyler. Tyler was a great guide, really knew the river well, and gave very clear directions to maneuver us down the river! He was very patient with my 8 year old cousin who was sometimes not following his directions. The river was pretty shallow in places, but Tyler jumped right out and pulled us along. The rapids were classified at 1, 2, and 3. I wish it had been a little more fast and rough, but it was great for families with small children. I enjoyed getting out of the boat to swim for a while. We stopped for a snack halfway through the 4 hour trip, which was appreciated, but left much to be desired. I would recommend bringing a snack for yourself with more sustenance or eat a good meal before you go! All in all a great, memorable trip! read more

We took the half day trip with MWR during our stay here in Durango. The water was high and fast at this time of year (4100 Cfs) so there was plenty of white water. MWR is set up in the Albertson's parking lot just down from Old Town Durango, so it's easy to find. MWR buses you to the drop-in point, and you go in. We got the rafting standard safety lecture and off we went. If you've gone rafting, there was very little backward paddle on this trip, so not much technical stuff, but we got some drops and plenty of face-and lap-fully of cold river water. This isn't a big bump trip but we enjoyed it and our 11/year-old loved it. The river trip is beautiful, too. Our guide, Dylan, was friendly and funny and did a great job finding good water for us to run. He also explained what to do and kept us involved. MWR is a good value. I recommend that if you're here early in the year, get the wetsuit package. People with us didn't and looked quite chilly. That's snowmelt at about 40 degrees in the water. We'd recommend MWR to anyone for their family trying trip in Durango. read more

I should start by saying I had a fantastic raft trip, with a slight mishap. My friend and I (both empty nesters in our 50's) signed up for the 4 hour rafting trip. We decided that we were going to do the class 4 water park that was an optional part of the trip. We were so fortunate to land in Mark May's raft. He was fantastic. He is personable, safe and told a bunch of stupid (but cute) jokes. He clearly has a lot of experience. I highly recommend traveling with him. We had another little issue. We did the class 4 the first time with no problem. It was so much fun. We were offered an option of doing it again. So we did. That trip didn't turn out so well. Both my friend and I and 1 other man ended up in the water and under the boat briefly. My friend and other guy were able to get to the raft, I was not. I managed to get to the edge where I hung on to a rock. The water was pretty intense for my level of experience. Holding on was a little stressful. The bonus to this whole story is that Mountain Water Rafting takes safety pretty seriously and they sent along a crew of 3 rescuers with the raft trip. So a big huge thank you to Doug for coming to pull my ass off the side of the river. He was super nice and he really helped calm me down. All in all the experience was amazing. Our guide, Pete, played games, told jokes, and provided an fun and exciting experience for all of us - we felt safe the entire time and I loved how the kids (and everyone) participated in paddling - was a great way for our kids to see teamwork amongst strangers - there were more rapids than we expected (which was great because we were a little worried it would be too mellow) but it also could have been our guides ability to hype up even small rapids! Our family thoroughly enjoyed our trip down the Animas as part of our 2 week vacation exploring the West. Our kids, ages 13 & 17 loved the whitewater rafting trip. Our guide, Russ was awesome and the entire crew went out of their way to ensure we had a great day. From the yummy snacks at the midway point to the "raft guy" jokes they cracked on the bus to/from the put in point, it was a terrific experience. The water level was low and the water was cold and murky due to fires and flash flooding the week prior, just North of Durango. Despite the imperfect conditions, we had fun. We took the 4 hour Animas River ride on a big blue raft and fitted 4 adults and 2 children with room to spare. Our 9 y/o granddaughter rowed that oar great! Our 6 y/o granddaughter liked the ducklings and mama duck we spotted near the river bank; she sat between her mom and me and seemed awed by the river ride. The Animas River was perfect today for family rafting and the weather was fine with some clouds and a few showers and sun too! In no time we were paddling like a team, following Mark's guidance! We are a Grammy and Grampy and we will always remember the awesome day we rafted on the Animas River with our daughter, Becca, her husband, Greg, and our granddaughters, Nicolette and Genevieve!! We had a great time rafting. The guides were very nice and fun. We did book this about 2 months in advance and bought the full day experience combination of rafting and ziplining. I am not sure who it is appropriate to write this review under as they are not the same company but work together for the deals. While the rafting was great (4 hours on the water), it is definitely for beginners. There is only one area of level 2-3 rapids, which were fun, and the rest of the time is just gliding down the river, which was relaxing. I am not complaining about this because I was a beginner and didn't know what to expect. I think it's great for beginners. Anyway, rafting was great. What wasn't great, is when we showed up for our "appointment" at the ziplining place at 1pm and they didn't have us in the system!! We were leaving town the next day and were going to be screwed out of our ziplining experience if it weren't for our luck that they had an opening for us later in the day at 4pm. We then had to go find something to do while we waited around for the later zipline trip that same day. Once we finally got to zipline, it was fun. The guides were great. I just think that the 2 companies need to make sure their systems are talking to each other. It could have been worse if we missed out on the ziplining and I would have thrown a big fit. read more
