    Chicken fried steak

Went for breakfast last Sunday morning and it was excellent. The interior is very nice and new. The staff was so kind and the food was amazing. It's hard to tell from the pics but it was delicious. I got the bowl with potatoes, eggs and sausage gravy and I was so impressed with the flavor of the sausage gravy. They also have scrapple! As a PA family this was a very happy surprise! Prices very reasonable for the amount and food quality!

Basic is sometimes underrated, but at this cafe basic is pretty great! I had a cheese omelette that was as described - fluffy eggs folded over cheese - and it was terrific. The home fries were tasty, not deep fried, and done perfectly - not too mushy. Super plentiful so of course we took the remainder home. Wayne had a sausage and cheese omelette, sausage was ground so it blended nicely and the flavor was great - same deal with the potatoes. He opted for the biscuit, I went for wheat toast. All basic, but more! Service was quick; and you can tell the place caters to and/or is supported by locals. Love that!

Stopped by mountaineer cafe on the way down to Birmingham, Va. Loved the place. Food was good for the value, won't find any better prices! Fried mushrooms were delicious. All their pies are home made and the black berry pie was amazing. Staff are warm and friendly. Definitely recommend this place as a nice road side stop.

    BLT and fries

I was torn between 3-4 stars. They were very busy and only had 1 waitress. Food was at least 30 minutes to arrive. However, our waitress was awesome and sweet. The BLT was very tasty and fixed just right. The fries were okay but not hot. The onion rings had a great flavor but cold. They were out of the peach cobbler which looked great. Tried the cherry cobbler, but it was not good at all. Lacked flavor and juice. Based on the amount of people in there you could tell it was the local hang out for the town on a Friday night. If you are passing through and need somewhere to eat this is good for that. I would not come back just to eat there.

    Good hometown place to eat!

It was even more awkward because there were many empty tables in the bigger dining room and only one other party was seated there. We were also a party of 4. But the service and the food were awesome. We had appetizers of a very savory and huge pretzel with beer cheese and mustard sauces to dip it in. And sausage sampler's. Also very tasty. We decided to go there to honor my youngest son, Shane, who passed away a few years back, for what would have been his 52nd birthday. It was a wonderful experience and memory of past visits there with him and his family.

The entire meal I was looking at three empty tables across the dining room. The area is cramped. The wallpaper is peeling. There is grime on the bathroom doors. The view into the kitchen is unglamorous. Our server was reserved and underwhelming. I asked her what she could suggest for a vegetarian. There is one dish - with mushrooms. I asked if the green beans were cooked with ham. She said no and asked if I had food allergies. No allergies - I said I don't eat ham. The server said the beans had stewed tomatoes & mushrooms. I asked if they could leave the mushrooms off. She said, "Yes, if you pick them off." What? I ordered the French onion soup. I told the server I don't eat meat but I can tolerate beef broth. That was her invitation to say they use pork broth in the soup, but she didn't. Hubby ordered the Jager Schnitzel. He enjoyed the veal. The red cabbage was his favorite (he pulled out a bay leaf). The French onion soup tasted off. The creamed corn had three huge pieces of what I assume were husks. Otherwise it was good. The green beans were decent. I picked out the mushrooms. We were overlooked in the back. Hubby asked for a manager when he noticed I wasn't eating my soup. We were surprised that our server was the manager. There wasn't anything in her demeanor that demonstrated leadership or being outgoing. She removed the soup charge off the bill. When we had gaps in service, we asked another server for help (sharp knife, bag, lemons). Paying was a challenge. It is easy to be overlooked in the back of the restaurant. When we left, the hostess asked how we enjoyed the meal. I started to share. She said, "I'm still talking." I wish we hadn't gone inside. The idea of visiting the Bavarian Chef was much better than the actual experience.

The wines are excellent and there are several tasting options you can choose- I believe there was a red flight, a white flight, and a "signature" option that had both. You also have the option to build your own flight, which I always love. The 2024 rosé is a standout, we picked up several bottles to bring home. We could not believe how good the food was- it was worth a trip in its own right! It's on the pricier side but it is clear why, the plates wouldn't be out of place at a fine dining restaurant. We also had the kindest server, Chelsie, who made our experience so special and memorable! She stopped by to chat several times, gave us great recommendations, and she could not have been nicer to me and my friends. We were lucky enough to attend our dear friends' wedding here and it was a spectacular wedding venue. The space is just beautiful and the catering was incredible- some of the best wedding food we've had by far. We liked it so much we came back to visit the tasting room the next day :) This is a perfect stop on the way to Charlottesville from the DMV and a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon.

Their breakfast is incredibly generous and made with ingredients that were fresh, clean, and meticulous in detail. The design of their menu is just so promising with unique twists that are not unheard of, but just an elevated touch when it comes to American diner food as a whole. Things like truffle infused hollandaise, fried green tomato BLT, pairing balsamic with goat cheese, a blackened pork, even mushrooms on the breakfast menu all hint that people developing their menu are confident in their skills in offering something more when it comes to breakfast plates and sandwiches. Their homemade aiolis (highly recommend their pesto aioli) and hot sauce tie any dish together-- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Things made to this quality are not to be unremarked. Came in with friends so we can try everything on their menu, and we were pleasantly surprised on all fronts. Presentation, ingredients, preparation all elements that made our meals great and were evident across all dishes ranging from protein to carb. Details like toasted bread with already spread with butter, perfectly poached eggs, and brioche as the bun of choice were things we peeped. We would have left satisfied if these details weren't accounted for, but we were so impressed this became a revisit during our short vacation. Their space is greatly spacious, with an open drinks station so its just not pretentious. There is even a section in the front to pick up goods made by local artisans.
