This is the best cheesecake in the Winston-Salem area, and the flavors are amazing. I just wish they were open every day of the week!

Because they have almost everything and anything you could possibly want from a bakery. I was flabbergasted at the choices. Everything looked absolute beautiful. Besides treats and desserts, they also have quiches and sandwiches made to order. I ended up ordering two slices of ham and cheese quiche and two slices of cheesecake (plain & raspberry white chocolate) to go, along with a hot Mexican Mocha Latte (not pictured). The Mexican mocha latte was quite the wonderful surprise. The first sip you could taste the mocha and cinnamon, the aftertaste was a hint of Cayenne pepper. Truly enjoyable. We got home and had early lunch. The quiche was fantastic. Very savory with chunks of ham. My husband and I will really loved it. They also sell whole quiches for less price than most supermarkets around. We were going to save the cheesecake for dessert tonight but broke down and had it after lunch. My husband actually prefers just plain cheesecake and he loved this so much. I had the raspberry white chocolate it was a very lovely sweet tart taste. This place is incredible and the prices are worth it. If you're nearby you need to check this out.

But, I do need to advise anyone who is unwaveringly accustomed to the Italian and Portuguese bakeries of New England (at least in the 1980s), and similar places, the pastries here aren't quite at that level. The pastries I tried were a little dense and shriveled, with a slight sour taste (which could've also been due to some uneven baking, erring on the overbaked side). In an apple filled item, the small amount of apples weren't quite soft and sweet enough, as well. Overall, the pastries were nearer to those of a very talented home baker than the polished work of a traditional professional pastry shop. Of course, for this specific region, this will be an enjoyable stop. With that in mind, I'm not surprised there are long lines; it must be very exciting to encounter a shop like this for the first time. There are very few other bakeries making pastries of this type, much less good ones. It's very, very hard to make excellent pastries. But, if you come from a land rich with bakeries, just set your expectations appropriately. Plus, there is the critical difference between New England and North Carolina bakeries: Would you rather have pastries that are sensational from sullen and unpredictably snappish people? ...or pastries that are decent and charming from laid-back and friendly people?

But to my surprise after 5 days of dining, it's the subtle-yet-sophisticated flavors of the Herbal Accents high tea experience that have stolen the show, as well as my heart. Located in a quaint historic farmhouse across from a picturesque white chapel, Mrs. Laura welcomed us inside with that kind of easy-going southern hospitality you thought only existed in the books you were forced to read in grade school. You'll enjoy the English-inspired classics: an assortment of egg, cucumber, and chicken salad sandwiches enlivened with "herbal accents" from the garden - is that dill and jasmine I taste Madame Laura? Enchanté! But the crowd pleaser will most definitely be the warm scones with homemade fig jam. Do not press the skip button on these bad boys. You'll wash these down with your choice of a few teas, all sweetened with home-grown stevia leaf, and this is where the joint truly shines. The English black tea? Delicious. The vanilla chai tea? Best I ever had. But the hibiscus iced tea? A revelation. One sip and you'll be whisked away to a time when life was simpler, flavors were sweeter, and when the finer things were just simply "the things". An easy 5 stars.

I got a last minute invitation to a small house gathering, asked what I can bring and my host…read moresuggested a dish or dessert. I opted for the latter given time constraints, which led me to search out a bakery. Lo and behold, the first resulted in Karen's Cakes & Cafe Pharr. I perused the site late Friday night (9/1), impressed by what I had seen of the photos, which was an obvious display of someone with great cake design talents. I couldn't believe my luck at this being the first result and exhaustion led me to retire for the night. I awakened Saturday (9/2) morning and resumed my task by reading the reviews which ultimately led to a phone call. It was not a regular business day, but as luck would have it, I got to speaking with Karen herself; the first call was an inquiry to find out about placing orders. Karen informed me of what I can order and the call ended thereafter. I gave it some thought and called back a second time; this time placing my order for cinnamon rolls, which Karen stated, "everyone loves". The time arrived for pickup and I got the opportunity to be warmly greeted by Karen, her husband Mike, and my order. I absolutely loved our exchange of conversation. To my surprise, Karen had included a couple of treats; a slice of her iced blueberry lemon cake, a slice of red velvet cheesecake AND extras that were totally unexpected and only found out when we got home. Thank you!! Thank you!! At this point, I couldn't wait to get home and when I did, my daughter, who had accompanied me on the trip, opened up the containers with the cake slices and we dug right into our treats and let me tell you, they were mouth watering and deliciously flavorful AND we didn't stop there; we knew we had to sample the cinnamon rolls and Karen, you weren't kidding about those rolls. They were absolutely and delightfully soft with just the right amount of sweet. It was not long before we decided that this is where I would be ordering my birthday cake. I am now torn between the iced blueberry lemon and the coconut cream cake!! Though I think my daughter has already decided on the iced blueberry lemon. Overall, the reviews are exactly what I experienced; a delightful business owner who had charm and appeal, whose smile was infectiously warm and inviting, who knows her products, swears by her customers' satisfaction, and guarantees that you would love it AND love it we did!! These appear to be the characteristics that continue to make Karen's Cake & Cafe Pharr a successful business for over 30 years. Thank you Karen for the last minute accommodation given such short notice. It was a pleasure meeting you and getting the opportunity to experience your expertise!! See you in October!!
