I love Fancy Pastry. It's truly a hidden gem (unless you work or live around Lexington, and then it's a staple!) They always have cakes in the case that they will write on for you, round or rectangle. They have single serve cake squares, brownies, cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts, and so much more! Their icing is a type that people LOVE. It's soft, but has that thin layer of crunch on the outside. They also stick to plain vanilla icing and cake, unless it's a special order or a seasonal item, from what I have found. The best thing is the doughnut holes, but get them filled with icing! So yummy!! There is always a line, but you get in and out pretty quickly. There are multiple girls working at all times and they work quickly, but make sure to take their time with each customer. The shop looks old. When you go in there is minimal decoration, and the cases look like they are from the 70's, but don't let that turn you away. This is a very sinful place for me to go because it is SO VERY FREAKING DELICIOUS . I love this place so very much. When I go in here it is so very hard not to come out of there without one of each. I've been coming here all my life'. But over the last few years things have been changing. And Saturday was my biggest disappointment yet. This one that was just to much. It went against everything great that I remember of that place from my childhood. New owners ok since then, but going to the bakery as a child is fun, Joy, excitement, and that brings parents and grandparents like me now in. You should keep those customers happy. If somethings not for sale, don't display it! Period! Especially not something on the lower shelf's, come on. My kids now grandkids have always picked their exact cupcake they want. Even though they all look alike (except color) and the ladies have to reach to their far back (where the kids see them) to get them. When we asked for the ones on the second, bottom tray yesterday. And I went ahead and asked for all of my cupcakes from that tray because they appeared so much dread her and better, I'm buying them I want what I want. She replied, "No, I can't pull them from that tray!" I spent $30 on cupcakes and couldn't pick what I wanted. Fancy pastry if you must sell from one tray now then please don't put anymore out, not only was that rude but it made my birthday grandson sad and me mad!!!!! I would not recommend this bakery to anyone for any reason. I called to see if they could do a Highland Cow cake for my daughter's 16th birthday party two weeks in advance. I was advised they could for 10.00 more. The girl taking my order understood it was a Highland Cow and asked what color I wanted and what color flowers to go around the head of the cow. I was very excited to see the cake when I went to pick up on May 10. When the box was opened it was nothing more than the typical brown round cake with flowers they do. I told the girl helping me that the cake was not the cake I ordered. I explained I ordered a Highland Cow cake. After going back and forth into the kitchen talking with someone, not the manager, she said they could redo the cake completely which would be an hour at the earliest since they had Mothers Day orders but it could be longer or they could do a cartoony picture of a cow. Since they screwed up the cake completely, good customer service would say, we will take care of that and put your order before anyone else's. But that isn't what happened. My reply was I didn't want it to look stupid with a cartoony picture. I really didn't have time to wait for another cake so I asked if they could give me a big discount on the ugly brown cake they had made and she again, going into the kitchen speaking with someone,(the kitchen was full of young girls, looked like teenagers) advised they could take 5.00 off. This bakery completely screwed up my order and was gonna take a whole 5.00 off the price. I said I would pay 20.00 which was more than generous for the ugly brown cake, to which again someone in the kitchen sent her back to say no. I asked if they would rather throw the cake away than sell it for 20.00 and she shook her head yes. I left. Under a time crunch and needing a cake, I went back in and asked for the manager. I should have done that from the beginning instead of dealing with teenagers. The manage wasn't any better. She finally went to the back and was gone and as I stood there waiting I just had an overwhelming feeling to leave. so I did. I received a call back within the a bit and it was the manager said she had talked with the owner and I could either have that cake at 20.00 or a gift certificate for another cake at another time. My reply was quite simply, I don't want your cake, you can throw it away (because it was ugly and ain't nobody want a brown cake) and I don't want your gift certificate. The manger also felt the need to tell me that the girl who took my order had screwed up phone orders before and she had been taken off phone order duty. I replied, if you knew she had screwed up other orders, why werent you willing to do better when I was there. I don't just blame the girl who took the order, I also blame the girl who decorated the cake. When I could see the paper with my order on it, she should have questioned some things and the fact that she didn't, is incompetence. The Fancy Pastry shop has lost a customer for life. not the first time they screwed up an order for me. I will NEVER use this bakery again and would not recommend. It's really isn't good anyways. I went to Nothing Bundt Cakes in Salisbury to get what I needed for the birthday party and it tasted so much better than anything these people sell. read more

I stopped the car and turned around when I saw the name of this shop. I didn't know what to expect, but the name alone.... There were all kinds of doughnuts, cupcakes, and pies. I grabbed an apple pie with crumble and icing on top. It is fall after all. I called the neighbors on my 1.5 hr drive home and invited them for a taste test. This pie was absolutely amazing!! My husband went so far as to say it was the best apple pie he ever had. The neighbors raved about it. I think there may be a road trip in our future for more of their goodies! read more

Fancy Pastry is located right outside of downtown Lexington, in a small shopping center. The parking lot is on the small side but there is also space on the side or the building to park. They are always busy, especially after school hours, but I've never has to wait more than a few minutes in line. Totally worth the wait too, because their cupcakes and donut holes are so good! I love seeing the cute seasonal cupcakes they offer as well. I haven't tried their cakes but they always have such pretty ones in the display cases. There is plenty of space if you're wanting to sit down, relax, and enjoy a snack. They have a large variety of baked goods available and they always taste fresh. Best pastry shop in the world - and I've traveled immensely. I come here annually for Christmas and stock up and gift these tasty goodies. The icing is the best part. I would love the recipe :o) I've been coming here since I was a child back when they were near the square and had yummy grilled cheese sandwiches. This is one place I hope never changes. The only exception are the people (hence 4 stars instead of the fabulous 5) - when I come here, I know there is going to be attitude and indifference from the staff, totally dislike that part. I have lived overseas for the past 3 years and after coming home to the states I was so excited to introduce my toddler to the bakery I loved so much as a kid. We came in the week after the 4th of July. The employees were huddled in the kitchen area and a sweet girl came out to assist us. My son was so excited to pick out some cupcakes so we decided to get some for the family and all split a dozen. We got the pastel colored cupcakes, paid and made our trip back to Thomasville. Once we got home I decided to let my son try a cupcake, I was so ready to see his face when he tried what I remembered as the best dessert around. As he bit into it, he had a look of concern and spit the dessert back onto the plate. When I asked what was wrong he pointed to the cupcake, so I took a bite. The sponge was dry it instantly drew all the moisture out of my mouth, and the icing that once was so smooth, creamy and flavorful was just hard stale sugar on top of the equally disappointing cake. I was heartbroken to know how down hill the quality has went for fancy pastry. I'm even more upset I took my son out of the way to no avail. I really wanted to like this place but ultimately it wasn't the best. We were driving by after doing some house hunting and got a hankering for some coffee and sweets and then this caught our eye. When we walked in the place smelled wonderful! The girls were very friendly and knowledgeable. Upon their recommendation, I bought two oatmeal creme pies ( which the cookies themselves were good... nice and soft yet chewy but the creme they used was their buttercream frosting that they also put on their cupcakes... wait for the evaluation on that... this was already disappointing as I was expecting a marshmallow based creme, but I decided to give it a try because maybe I was missing out on something....Frosting and an oatmeal cookie??? What could be bad about that? I also got their donut holes ( a mix of Apple fritter and glazed). These were good and recommended by the girl helping us. My disappointment came from their cupcakes. They attracted me to purchase them because they were cutely decorated ( which my 8 and 5 year olds would love) and they were only $1.15/ each! Such a steal in comparison to bakeries in California. Alas, the excitement was short lived when I gave my kiddos the cupcakes and I tasted them myself. The vanilla cake was soooooooo dry. I am not one to exaggerate but these literally had no moisture to them whatsoever. Not sure what recipe this bakery follows but they need to seriously reconsider switching their recipe. In direct opposition of that, the frosting was so sickening sweet, there was no way I would take another bite of that cupcake and I even told my kiddos to stop eating them. I feel bad for saying that because the bakery itself showed promise and the girls working there were very nice but the owner needs to reevaluate the quality of their products and recipes. Stopped in & picked up a few treats at Fancy Pastry shop after visiting some relatives in Lexington. The items we tried were very good & very fresh. They have a great selection of cakes, pastries, cookies, cupcakes & a whole bunch of other items to choose from. They have a few tables & chairs also if you wanna pop a squat to get your sugar rush on. The whole storefront is a big window, you can see the folks in action decorating the freshly made cakes & cupcakes right from the sidewalk. We were in on a saturday afternoon & the place was boomin' with customers. The mini chocolate cupcake was good, a chocolate cake with chocolate icing, no big whoop there, but tasty. The homemade oatmeal cream cookie was very good also, the cream filling is crazy sweet, a little too sweet for my taste, I squashed the cookie a little to push some of the filling out the sides to remove a little of it to tone down the sweetness. My favorite of the items we picked up was the lemon tart, it was a great little treat, it packs a good lemony burst of flavor not overpowered by sweetness. This has been my go to place for all my family's bakery needs as long I can remember. Their shop has the simple small town feel to it and staff is really friendly. The do a mixture of pastries and cakes. We always get all our birthday cakes from there. They have the best icing. Ohhh how I love Fancy Pastry!! It's hard not to love a place you were raised with!! It's almost all I know as far as bakeries are concerned!! Every year except 1 since i've been born (which is a couple years give or take a few ;-]), i've received my birthday cake from Fancy. As well as my heart shaped Valentine cakes and egg shaped Easter cakes! My mom even TRIED to mail me my cake my freshman year of college (epic fail but she made up for it when I came home of course). It's that much of a tradition in my family. In fact I cried my junior year of college when my mom thought she could stop these traditions (It was Easter & I still wanted my basket...). What do you mean? I don't care i'm damn near grown, I want my cake! So she had cupcakes & an Easter basket for me when I came home to visit :-). And i'm not shamed one bit! lol! I can even remember a few years when I was young, my mom was late as always picking up my cake, and the owner would wait for her after closing and bring it out to her through the back door. This was when they were located on 2nd Ave (I think that was it). I didn't know other bakeries even existed until a few years ago, and none of them even compare. I can't even find icing anywhere that tastes even close to what Fancy Pastry does! It must be like some huge family secret lol! I've never tasted a bad dessert from Fancy. Every single time my cupcakes are light and fluffy and not a single dessert i've tasted has been over cooked or unattractive to the eyes. My only complaint is that lately over the past year or so the cases have seemed kind of empty, even mid day! Not a lot to choose from. I'm normally ok as long as they have cupcakes but other family members have been disappointed. That's the only reason for the 4 stars in lieu of 5. I've lived in the Lexington area for several years and have never gone here but today was my daughters birthday and we decided to go for a treat. First and foremost, the prices are ridiculous. Charging prices similar to that of bakeries the MAKE their cakes is absurd. It is painfully obvious that the pastry, cakes and cupcakes are made by a company and shipped frozen. its the same cake that you get at every single grocery store and walmart in the area. The staff are rude, and the general feeling as you decide what you want is that you are wasting the time of the people who work the counter.
