Owner called back shortly thereafter and rudely gave me the third degree about my other options for moving which frankly were none of his business. This is not the way to win customers. So - I can add to the half dozen times another move and can safely say that again, I would rate Movers Not Shakers a 5 star. I moved from Montclair, NJ to Bloomfield, NJ and again, the movers arrived EARLY. They were prepared, they were professional and they actually remembered me. Harry (the lead guy in the move) was awesome as were the other guys he was with. Efficient and as friendly as possible. I hate to say it - but I tend to be a real pain in the ass as with this move - I really did take everything but the kitchen sink (VERY HEAVY APPLIANCES - think Sub Zero). In short, what it boils down to is that they are professional, fair, pleasant and punctual. What more could you ask for? And a note to anyone who ever speaks to other people. My grandmother always said that you get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. It's really true and being a decent person will go a long way. When you see guys busting their asses to move your things (without any damage I might add), tip them well. Also - a cold drink never hurt. :-) read more

I moved with this company on the first of May, and boy was that a mistake. Heard about them on WNYC so I thought they came highly recommended. They're "green!" They do flat rates! Great! First of all, when I told them how much stuff I had, they gave me an estimate of bins that they said was "more than enough." They arrived to drop them off at the appointed time. It immediately became clear that there weren't going to be enough of them. So the next day I had to order more. A lot more. They arrived about an hour late for their appointment to drop THOSE off and informed me I was being charged more (even though they were the ones who screwed up the estimate). Moving day. Move scheduled for 1 pm. My movers showed up at 3:45. Maybe closer to 4. I got one call, around 2, saying they were running a little late because someone had more stuff than anticipated and more flights of stairs than anticipated (um, aren't you supposed to KNOW THIS STUFF in advance? You ask these questions right on your website). When I tried to call back around 3, the guy's phone was shut off. My team of movers showed up, finally, after I'd been cooling my heels in my packed-up, hot apartment for hours. The head guy, clearly annoyed and exhausted, and his team of five guys who were "brought in at the last moment" (clearly, the buddies of one of the two ACTUAL MOVING PROFESSIONALS who were doing the move). The head guy didn't speak Spanish and the majority of the "crew" didn't speak Engligh. Which works tremendously well for a) a coordinated move and b) my bins getting into the rooms I'd labeled on the tops. Nobody seemed to know what the F they were doing with the exception of Vinnie. That dude was super strong, and nice. He is the only reason I'm giving this company ANY stars. When we got to the new place, I was told that the guys needed a pizza break. Cue another half hour of waiting around for that. Plus, the head guy's co-worker from the company showed up in ANOTHER truck, done with his own jobs, and parked across the street. Just to hang out and wait for him to finish. I'm sure my new neighbors across the street were psyched about THAT. (Side note: my stuff was moved in a Budget rental truck. Hardly the "biodiesel" vehicle promised on the site.) All in all, the worst move I've ever had, and I have moved a lot, and with a bunch of low-budget companies. When I left a message informing the owner, Mark, of all of this, I kind of expected a profuse apology and a reduction in my rate for the incredibly crappy service. Instead I got an angry phone call from him: a litany of excuses for everything that I just listed above, a refusal to take responsibility for any of it, and a last ditch offer to "send [me] a check for a hundred dollars." Implying it was not a refund but a payoff for not, say, writing a bad review on Yelp. Um, whatever. I'd rather get the word out. Movers Not Shakers are the WORST. AVOID AVOID AVOID. read more

This is the second time I've used Movers, Not Shakers and once again they came through. While the prices aren't the cheapest, they are very reasonable and I accept that the extra money bought higher quality service. And the added cost was offset by the use of their bins, which saved me time, effort and the unnecessary environmental damage of throw-away boxes. A definite plus, in my view. The office staff is helpful (shout out to Bri and Jesse), helped resolved complications from the apartment management company, and the actual moving team is careful, friendly and take the protection of household items seriously. They themselves helped pack the more sensitive items (computer and music equipment), protected every item of furniture with blankets, bubble & plastic wrap. In both instances, the job foreman was professional and friendly. Should I move again -- I dread to think of it -- I'll certainly be back with Movers, Not Shakers. read more

Best moving experience I've ever had. I felt a little weird about the flat-rate thing but the experience was wonderful. A fair price and super easy. Harry, our foreman, and his crew were AWESOME. They was super accommodating, friendly, and very, very careful with our stuff. The back-office crew was great too: They got me an insurance certificate for our coop and put up with numerous requests for changes and tweaks in the time leading up to the move. So frustrating I wouldn't even bother leaving a star but apparently I can't. So I'll go with the lowest possible. One star is very very nice. BROKEN AND MISSING ITEMS - CARELESS - UNPROFESSIONAL - UNFRIENDLY - VERY EXPENSIVE Positive: they're fast... but that turns into negative when you open your boxes and realize how many items have been broken. They set a record. We've had a couple of other moving companies over the past 2 years and movers not shakers are the worst. Even the move from abroad was less painful than with them. We had broken and missing items. When we called the company to tell them we were missing some items, they of course claimed that their movers were trustworthy. That's not the point... They may be trustworthy but not careful at all. I don't think they're really professional either. They asked my husband over the phone how many boxes he thought we would have. When they came to move everything, they complained that there were more boxes than we had said... We're not professionals and can't assess for them and do their job. Had they made the effort to come first and make an estimate, they would not have complained about the amount of boxes, which, by the way, was not that higher than expected considering that there were lots of small light boxes. One last thing: it ended up being very expensive for the service... It took them about 2hours and a half to move everything... 6 blocks away. We didn't want to take care of it but it's a lesson. If I could give this company more than 5 stars, I would. I heard of horror stories about movers so I was quite stressed before committing to this mover. Greg was great and very responsive in planning our complicated move-- pick up in 1 location and drop off in 3 locations over 2 days. Eduardo and team of 5 arrived early and got right to work packing up a huge amount of furniture, artwork and boxes and loading it carefully on the truck in reverse order of drop offs. At each drop off, they carefully placed each item where specified (and did not mind when I changed my mind several times) and carefully unwrapped each item. For, the long distance part of the move, our stuff was securely stored over night and was delivered early on day 2. Same team (but only 3 people) and same great service. The entire experience was much better than expected, reasonably priced and expertly done. The price given at commitment was the price- no hidden fees or changes along the way. They moved my Grandma's home from Connecticut to Brooklyn, and were amazingly fast, efficient, reliable and not a thing was damaged or misplaced. I really, really, REALLY wanted to love these guys. After filling out the online estimate form, I got a call back very quickly. Their rate was the best I'd gotten from anyone else, and the use of the bins was very, very appealing. They also accommodated some after-booking changes with what I'd consider a reasonable adjustment in quote. The first problem started when I called them two weeks before to see when they'd be able to drop off the bins. The response I got was that they weren't going to have any scheduled moves in my area, so I should just use my own boxes. I called and spoke with the owner who quickly settled things and set a drop-off time of the week before. A few days before my scheduled move, I realized that the estimate of boxes the quote-giver gave to me would not be sufficient, but I was able to use my own leftover boxes to compensate. Overall, not a problem. The move itself went well at first. They showed up 15 minutes early, but gave a call in advance to make sure I was ready for them (I was). They were scheduled to bring three guys, but five came. This sped the move considerably, which was nice. They were all very nice and very efficient. Up until this point I would have given a five-star review. After we were finished in my old apartment, the foreman came over to me on the sidewalk and claimed they didn't have enough room in their truck for one of their guys; could he come in the car service with me? I said sure, as it wasn't that big of a deal, but it was a little odd. Once the last box came into the new apartment and the final piece of furniture was placed, the foreman came over to me to settle the bill. I'd been quoted $400 (studio-into-studio move), which I had in cash, and I had decided that a $150 tip (nearly 40%!) would be sufficient since things had gone so well. When I handed the man the stack of money, he counted each bill slowly, one-at-a-time in front of me, and when he got to the last one, he looked very disappointed and shook his head. He said that they had five guys (though only three were supposed to come, I told him), and that it had been a hot and humid day and could I do a little better. I told him that I felt a nearly 40% tip was more than generous, and that I felt very uncomfortable that he, with three of his guys standing behind him looking at me, was challenging me. He asked me again if I could do better. I asked him what he'd consider "better." He said, 'another $50, yes?' At this point I felt very, very intimidated. I countered again, but he held firm and gave a litany of reasons why they should get the extra money. I felt like they were taking advantage of me, as I was a single woman moving alone. It felt like a shakedown, and I felt very, very distressed by it all. I ended up giving him the extra $50, and though I immediately regretted rewarding such appalling behavior, honestly, I just wanted them out of my new apartment. So, in short, I really, really, REALLY wanted to love these guys, but I absolutely cannot recommend them because of how they treated me in regard to the tip. Demanding a 50% tip is simply inexcusable, and I wouldn't want anyone else to be taken advantage of like I was. read more

It was a tough job getting up 3 flights of stairs in my new walk up apartment, but the guys worked hard and got all the pieces up with no damage or problems. I didn't even get a chance to try Movers, Not Shakers! because after my first phone call I refuse to move forward with the process. Greg Gissen called me and at first I was very excited about my move and to go over pricing and planning with him. That was until he belittled me and started being rude. If I am going to put down money for your company I am going to ask questions to make sure it is the best fit for me and I would like to know where my money is going to. Greg questioned my questions and mansplained to a T. It's unfortunate that I had to speak to Greg so I didn't get an opportunity to have the movers come being that the reviews for them seem to be great! read more

I've had my share of bad moving experiences, so when it came time to move again, i was very hesitant. I almost went into it just decided to do Flat Rate and paying a bundle, but we decided to reach out to MNS to see what their rates were like. They came by our place, had a very realistic idea of how many boxes we would need and quoted us $600 less than Flat Rate. We went with them. They were an hour late, but gave us a lot of notice about it. When they came in, they had a team of guys just act as machines and move the stuff, packing stuff that we missed, disassembling furniture, wrapping fragile items and just totally blowing me away with their work ethic. They took a long time to get to our new place in Jersey, but once there, followed directions on where to put everything, put it all back together, were incredibly efficient and, most impressive of all, did not break a single item! I can't tell you how many hours ive done researching movers, reading reviews and worrying, but you can rely on MNS, they are great! Thanks guys! read more

Movers and Shakers helped me move from one apartment to another in the same building. I called needing a crew in two days. They sent an estimator immediately who surveyed everything and gave me a price in writing. Two days later I had a crew of seven (7) guys arrive exactly on time. They helped me get everything packed, moved, situated and unpacked all in the same day. This included moving the contents of multiple bookcases and then unpacking them in the same (alphabetical) order. The crew were professional, courteous and extremely competent. They covered the walls and balustrades with padding and protection to prevent damage; they handled large and awkward antiques with care, wrapping the pieces in padding and then swaddling them in plastic wrap. It was like watching a machine or group of army ants working. As a bonus, Movers and Shakers uses plastic bins as well as cardboard boxes. The use of bins results in far less garbage to dispose of at the end and is a much more eco-sensitive method for moving. If I required more time they would have allowed me to hold onto as many of the bins as I needed to facilitate my unpacking. At the end of the job they removed all the padding and protection and they took all the garbage from the move with them for disposal. It was great to work with a company that took such care and also had bins that reduced the waste. Packing and moving is a challenge but Movers and Shakers made the process fast and efficient. Moved with Movers Not Shakers earlier this week. They provided quick turnaround on my quote, gave me a reasonable price, and were very flexible with my complicated moving plan (some things going to an apartment, some things going to their storage facility.) I used the reusable Gotham Boxes, and loved them. The price of the reusable bins was included in my quote, and they even provided extra cardboard boxes for the items that would be going to storage. The move went very well. My movers were very nice and respectful (they didn't damage any of my stuff.) The one minus of my experience was some pressure I received at the end of the move about the tip. I gave them a tip of $100 for 3 guys for 3 hours. Everything I read online said $20 per guy was plenty, but I thought they did a great job, so I wanted to give more. I was told that they "usually get 20%." So, I gave another $20, but the exchange left me with a bad feeling. In my opinion, if tipping is expected to be 20%, that should be stated up front by the company. That is my only complaint, though. These guys were great! I was able to schedule them 3 days prior to my move and was quoted a reasonable price. The 3 man team that showed up day of were personable, courteous, and punctual. I was nervous about moving some of my glass objects, but the team wrapped them extremely well and I did not have a single issue. Once we got to the new apartment I was amazed at how fast they unpacked everything (It might have been 20 minutes). Movers Not Shakers are the best. We hired them two years in a row for different moves within Brooklyn, one of which was this week. On both occasions, they were polite, reliable, careful and strong. This time we had Mike, Paul and two other great guys whose names I'm sorry I do not recall - every one of them was fabulous. The owner, Mark, and the office crew are all friendly, prompt and professional too. We also absolutely prefer packing in the big, hard sided, grey plastic crates we rent from Movers Not Shakers, so very much more efficient to park and better for the environment. The hinged lids protected all my big, odd sized kitchen appliances so I could just set them in, close the lid and move on to packing the next crate without the need for nearly as much padding/packing material. Finally, on both occasions, our moving crew was sweet to and patient with our little dog who found the whole experience very exciting. read more

On a quiet Saturday afternoon, I hear a moving truck circling our block at high speed. A little annoying but not the worst. Then they stop in the middle of our block. A few minutes later there's a lot of honking, as they've blocked in all the cars behind them. A guy comes out to move his car and make some room. The movers start shouting at the guy, yelling profanity and telling him to "move your f---ing car." Once the guy is driving up the block, the truck chases after him at high speed, inches from the guy's bumper. Not sure what kind of moving company intimidates local drivers, but they came off like huge jerks. read more

Clearly selecting a mover for my move out of state is a stressful process. I spoke to the ones that take the inventory over the phone and quote you a tiny rate just to lock you in, I spoke to Flat Rate who tried to charge me $200 to take care of a parking permit that I already had and that cost me $25, and then I spoke to Movers Not Shakers. They weren't the cheapest, they weren't the most expensive, they were right in the middle and it was a flat rate so I was sold. Movers showed up 20 minutes early, took inventory, did not complain that we had more than we estimated and went right to work. They had our entire 2 bedroom with a ton of heavy boxes moved out inside of an hour. That included wrapping up couches, paintings, and some other extra stuff. Never complained, were very friendly, and handled our stuff respectfully. They showed up in our new city about 20 minutes before we did and again went right to work. Getting us in our new place was the same. I gladly tipped them 25% of the bill and it was well worth it. I would of never heard of them if I didn't ask someone at the dog park and I am glad I did, I was shocked at how smooth it was. Hopefully I won't be needing their services any time soon, but if I move back, that is who I am calling. I realize many people have many experiences, but this was a great one. read more

I used Movers Not Shakers for a second time this past weekend and I could not have been happier with the choice. I read a few mixed reviews on this site and so I wasn't sure if I should go with them again, but my first move was so painless and easy and my initial conversations for this move with Mark were so pleasant that I decided to take a risk. I'm glad I did. I think they quoted me a fair price for a ton of work. The day before the move, I realized I needed ten palets and they came the next day with no issue and when they arrived and quickly realized they needed two trucks instead of one, they made arrangements immediately and - as promised - did not change the price on me. The crew was super nice and worked their butts off all day. I had a complex move with things going to two different addresses and they handled it perfectly. While they were packing, they'd stop to show me if there was prior damage and they also got everything to the right place. No easy feat at all. They showed up on time - or maybe even early, they worked all day until the job was done. It was a super long day and my base price was good so I gave them much bigger tips than I'd intended to, but they and the company earned what I paid. I plan on using them for move #3 for sure. read more

THIEVES!!! Long over due review, about a year ago we planned for 3 movers to come to our house and like similar reviews about 10 showed up and they showed up over an hour early from the set time. (this seems like their tactic for robbing people) I immediately got a bad vibe from the movers when we only told them to move our stuff that was ready out of the first floor and I found one mover upstairs in my father's bedroom with my father's passport in his hand along with other documents and bills, I confronted him and asked what he was doing since he had no permission to be in that room nor handle those items and he said he was just helping us pack. I told him off and told my dad what happened (who never once told him to help pack or go in that room) and at the same time we hear my mother screaming at the movers, her engagement ring worth over $5,000 that she has left on the same vanity stand for the past ten years in that house was not there anymore. I knew one of the movers took it. I called police to the scene but my dad did not press charges with them since the moving company said it then had the right to move the truck with almost all of our furniture on it to a storage place until a court case was settled. After we got moved in, we noticed multiple things broke including our bed for the master bedroom which they didn't even put together right and broke doing so. The owner of the company was an asshole and horrible over the phone, he made false promises of making it up to us and giving us money back for the move. We ended up paying full price, got nothing back and when we got legal with what happened the company denied it and it has turned into a he-said, she-said case that cannot be determined in court. This is one of the worst, definitely the worst companies I have ever encountered in my life and I hope that what they did to my family they do not do to anyone else ever again. read more

I was so impressed by everything about this moving company. The initial query and price quote was handled professionally by friendly staff that didn't harass me with a million follow-up phone calls. The flat rate was straightforward, not to mention that it was, even with the generous tip I gave the men, significantly less than the other flat rates I was quoted from all the other companies. The pack and the move was handled expeditiously by a serious and focused crew that did not waste a single minute. They were gentle with fragile items and patient with my last minute packing frenzy. I need to also mention that I moved on one of the hottest days of the summer. Regardless of the heat, they packed, moved and unpacked the truck as fast as humanly possible. I was more than thrilled with their service and, as I mentioned, I tipped them generously AND STILL PAID A LOT LESS THAN THE FLAT RATES I WAS QUOTED BY OTHER COMPANIES! CALL THEM! read more

Movers Not Shakers was awesome. The owner, Mark, came out and personally did the estimate. He was forthright and very clear in what our move would take and how much it would cost. And he was very, very reasonable. On moving day, the movers were 45 minutes early! And they were amazing. Nasser led the crew of 5 and they could not have been more careful, polite, and efficient. Not only did they move everything unbelievably quickly (2 trips even), they were actually fixing some of our furniture as they loaded and unloaded. And they were very observant, pointing out to us dings in our furniture that were already there, to show us they had not caused them, and even fixing some of those, too. Not only that, but they were also extremely patient and helpful in placing the furniture where we wanted it. Almost every box found its way to the rightful room in our new place. Most importantly, we're about 80% unpacked and so far nothing--nothing--is broken, especially the boxes marked fragile, which we checked first. Nasser was also extremely helpful in suggesting ways to better pack and label boxes. In fact, he was helpful throughout in terms of packing order for loading and unloading and helping us secure some dicey boxes. In general, moving sucks. It's something everyone wants to have done and no one wants to do. Movers Not Shakers does NOT suck. These guys make moving as painless as possible. From the start when I sat down with Nasser and he explained everything and how it would go to the moment they heaved the last box up the stairs, everything went as smoothly as humanly possible. I moved middle of May 2015. Everyone was excellent and professional. Matthew did the estimate. He was quick and nice. The estimate was fair and reasonable. Later, they lowered it when I told them about lower estimates I received. The movers packed everything extremely carefully. And they worked very quickly. At my new place, they proved very resourceful and took apart doors and a table to get everything in. We had a ton of books and they did it all very carefully and quickly. The guys who picked up the bins were also very fast and professional. I can't recommend these guys highly enough. The bins are great too. No mess of boxes to deal with for days afterward. This is the third move we did with Movers Not Shakers and they have been THE BEST every time. Both prior moves were complicated, with boxes going to or from multiple locations, and they were absolutely on top of it, organized and professional. This time around we were moving from a small 2-bedroom 3rd floor walkup in Manhattan into storage in Brooklyn. Vanessa was excellent at estimating boxes and time from our last move, and totally pro and on it despite us being vague and confused (we were trying to calculate what we had while out of town). Jean was the lead during the move, an absolute master at organizing, and also extremely polite, and absolutely calm, as was his team. They got it all done in 3 hours. We will be calling them again for the next move, and we're absolutely grateful for another stress-free, BS-free move. And to second Ali, anyone who's tipping 5% during a pandemic is a disgrace. We tipped like New Yorkers. They deserve it: It's just an absolute pleasure having people who know what they're doing do the thing. read more

The best movers. I had my second BROOKLYN move with Movers, Not Shakers and they just could not have been better. Great communication all around and a great price. I hired them for a mid-May 2017 move. They weren't the cheapest quote I received, but their quote was reasonable and I decided to go with Movers, Not Shakers because my building has strict insurance requirements and they were one of the few companies that meet the proper coverage. They arrived a few hours early (with our permission) since their previous move ended early so we were still packing up loose ends in our apartment when they got there. I asked if they had extra supplies I could use to finish up packing, assuming we'd just be charged for them, which is totally fine. But the foreman basically said "we'll take care of you if you take care of us with a tip." Ok, fine. At the end of the move, as the foreman was leaving, we thanked him and handed him our cash tip. He left and presumably counted it outside our door because less than 2 minutes later, there's a knock on the door. He had the nerve to ask my husband if 'he meant to just give him this much money' because our tip was too small for 5 guys and he reiterated the fact that he took care of us and gave us supplies under the presumption that they would be well compensated via tip. He then asked if we had any more money. My husband awkwardly said, 'hold on let me check' and we scrounged together a few bucks that we had on us, knowing it wasn't much but just wanting the guy to leave our door at this point. Not only was this the most awkward and appalling interaction with him essentially calling us cheap, let me mention that when booking Movers, Not Shakers, you receive a confirmation email that literally tells you the percentage to tip based on service level. If I recall correctly, it says 10%, 15% and 20%. So we tipped 15% of the total, thinking this is perfectly acceptable since we are literally taking direction from their email. Apparently not since this guy had the audacity to come back asking for more money. read more

I had a great experience with MNS. Even when we had a mixup about the moving date (on the day of the move!) they got me an excellent, personable crew that moved me quickly and without any damage (and I moved into a walkup that was also a duplex, so I know it wasn't easy on them). They stuck to their pricing estimate and were extremely professional, responsive and efficient. I'm so glad I chose them, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. read more
