Took my Lady Jane to Mozambique for her birthday. We wanted a Restaurant that had a nice view of the ocean. Made a reservation and arrived a little early. We were placed in a table on the roof that had a great view of the ocean and Laguna Beach. We were greeted by our waiter Juan and informed him about my Ladies birthday. He came back with a card wishing my lady a Happy Birthday with a Toucan on the cover. A nice Indaba Chardonnay from South Africa was ordered for my Lady. A nice sized pour of this wine and a glass of ice with a spoon was promptly delivered. We ordered the Seafood platter for two. Our dinner was delivered in a large platter with grilled lobster tails, butterflied prawns, shrimp, scallops and fried squid strips. Accompanying the seafood were bowls of hot melted butter and peri peri pepper sauce. The chefs knew how to properly cook seafood as everything was done to perfection. I am a home cook and a fisherman so I know how to cook fish and shellfish correctly. Enjoying the view we slowly ate our meal. Our water Juan was very attentive but not to the point of hovering over us. After we finished eating a complementary Birthday dessert was brought to our table with a lighted candle. My Lady made her wish and blew out the candle. The dessert was Mozambiques famous Banana Bread Pudding and a cup of vanilla ice cream. The bread pudding was covered in toasted macadamia nuts, blueberries, strawberries and boysenberries. The dessert was like the dinner delicious. Each piece of fruit was perfectly ripe and sweet. The meal, the atmosphere and the service deserve the 5 Star rating. I will definitely recommend Mozambique to friends and family and my lady and I are already discussing when to return there again for dinner! read more

Had reservations with my best friend celebrating our 10 years of friendship. From beginning to end the food and customer service was great. Upon sitting down, waters were brought to the table and consistently refilled. We started with their ceviche, which was fresh and cooked well. Even taste through every bite. For entrees we had their Salmon and the lemon chili linguini (added chicken). The salmon had a good sear to it and the taste was amazing, cooked perfect to my liking- not over cooked at all, soft with every bite. The veggies and potatoes served with the salmon were exceptional as well. The green sauce served with it was so complimenting to both the protein and sides. My guest stated the pasta was delicious as well. "It had plenty of flavor and spices without overwhelming the palate. The pasta was perfectly cooked while the chicken complimented the meal- as it is wood smoked and still moist." Soon after we were done eating, I believe the manager greeted us asking how our meal was and if we were celebrating anything in particular. We shared we were celebrating our friend anniversary and he surprised us with their Portuguese hot butter pudding. The dessert was a perfect ending to the meal! It was a warm bread pudding complimented with fresh whipped cream and berries. Each bite melted in your mouth. Along with great customer service, the ambiance is good as well. Since it is rooftop, tables are tightly packed, but we didn't mind it at all. There is still enough room to walk and eat comfortably. A beautiful view is seen from every angle of Laguna as well. Thank you, Mr. Manager, for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, your response does not erase the extremely poor experience we had at your restaurant. The lack of reasonable time limits for rooftop seating, the apparent favoritism toward certain customers, the painfully slow service, and the disappointing quality of the food all contributed to an unacceptable experience. I understand that some customers may come primarily for the rooftop view and may be willing to overlook mediocre food and poor service because of the atmosphere. I am not one of those customers. A beautiful view does not compensate for low-quality food and inadequate service, especially at the prices your restaurant charges. Perhaps instead of defending the experience, management should take these criticisms seriously and focus on improving the food, service, and overall treatment of customers. A great location may bring people through the door once, but good food and good service are what bring them back. read more

This place is a vibe!! Walking up to the restaurant you are instantly wowed by the decor and awesome layout with many dinning room options indoors and out. Got the Penne Pasta Mozambique which was loaded with wonderful flavors and did not disappoint. The cheese they put on it melts in the pasta and gives it a unique flavor profile and unites the dish. Definitely worth trying. Everything on the menu and what my party ordered looked incredible and makes me want to come back soon. But not only is the service excellent, upstairs on Sunday nights they have a live reggae band and it's such a fun place to drink and listen to amazing music with friends. We highly recommend if you are going to watch a band, especially if it's a band you really enjoy. You really should get tickets and buy a table. It gets very crowded. We enjoyed a delicious birthday dinner. The service this particular night was really good. It's a little difficult once the band starts to play to have a conversation with whomever you're with. So, if you're going to have dinner, come at least two hours earlier so that you can enjoy the band and cocktails without having to struggle over your conversation. They do have valet parking. They also, have a shuttle car service that will pick you up and take you home within 5 miles of the restaurant. We love this. read more

Not sure how to officially rate this restaurant and experience. We were a large group of 31 people who reserved a large table weeks ago. To have 2 servers was ludacris. It turned a birthday celebration into a frustrating situation. We were initially told that we could only reserve a 90 minute window for dinner. That would have been cutting it close with 4 servers but with 2 ?? It was hectic. Onto the food .... my friend and I shared the seafood platter. Everything was good but there really wasn't a wow factor. Others ordered a variety of selections which included branzino (some say it was delicious some say theirs was dry), Zanzibar hummus which was delicious and they offered additional pita bread without a charge when requested, beet salad (very tasty), Caesar salad (kinda blah ... needed something more in the dressing flavor department), pan seared salmon was dry, peri peri chicken pops (a little dry also but good flavor), penne pasta with shrimp (pasta was good but the shrimp was dry), fish and chips (they very kindly offered that for an older woman who doesn't eat a lot of different food foods and she enjoyed this option thoroughly), and South African pie (they thought this was a selection that wasn't as exciting as it sounded and would not recommend.) They initially told us they would divide the bill in increments of eight people, but when the check arrived, they split it between one side of the table and the other. This caused quite a disturbance and it was really hard to figure out who ate what and who owes what and it became quite a disturbance. To the business manager, I think if you take a handheld device to the table and process each persons selection separately it would have caused a lot less confusion and a lot more efficient way to take care of such a large check with that many people. Or perhaps offer a price fixed menu in order to avoid a major situation like the one we had. PS: the entertainment on the 2nd floor was outstanding. This spot is right on Pacific Coast Highway and they do have a small parking lot but there's usually a lot of street parking if you go during the evening. The main reason why I wanted to come here was to sit out top on the roof, but unfortunately due to the holiday the whole floor was reserved so we dined in anyway just rather food. They have different type of different type of cuisine just like African cuisine with different both flavors, which I really enjoyed. Our server was top-tier. WOW! I have wanted to try this restaurant for a while now and it was worth the wait. Valet parking at a reasonable rate. The building has three different sections with different names, themed for what one is looking for... for example... the live music area is called... Ivan'z House Live Music Club. There's a rooftop area that is also a different name, all are part of Mozambique. We went on a Friday and it was packed. We were sat in one of their private rooms that overlook the downstairs main area. The room was intimate and much quieter than the main dining room. The whole place has a great vibe to it. Walking in, you are greeted with a huge bird cage with exotic birds. The decor is really cool and the smells of the food make one instantly hungry to try everything. The service was prompt and the staff was very kind. Now... the food. Absolutely delicious. The menu has a variety of tempting items on it, however, I wanted to try the South African food and it did not disappoint. We had somosas as an appetizer and I had the South African pie. My husband had the steak and lobster. Everything tasted amazing. We ended with a delectable dessert and a cappuccino. Afterward, we went to the bar and saw the live band setting up. This is a must go to restaurant in OC. The rooftop seating has beautiful views of the ocean and Newport/Laguna. The decor is awesome and of course the parrots are a real delight! The food is really good. I have yet to have a disappointing meal. I also love the fusion food and seasonings they use. We're giving this a 3-star review solely because of our previous experience with our server, Jamie. The first time we dined here was incredible--so much so that we made the effort to drive out of town to come back for a special date night. Unfortunately, this visit did not live up to that experience at all. The service tonight wasn't even comparable. When our server finally came to the table, I tried to order fries I thought I had before. Realizing I was mistaken, I showed him a photo of what I meant. He said he knew what I was referring to but mentioned there would be an upcharge since they were from the happy hour menu--which I was completely fine with. What we were served, however, was extremely disappointing. The fries were drenched in an overwhelming amount of sauce--to the point where they were essentially inedible. It was surprising they were even sent out that way. Our server wasn't helpful in addressing the issue, and overall the service felt inattentive and disengaged. The entire experience felt uncomfortable rather than enjoyable. The food was average at best, and the service fell short. Jamie truly set the standard during our first visit--he's one of the best servers we've ever had, and he made the entire experience memorable. We came to the rooftop vibes and left happy and full! Such a beautiful restaurant nestled amongst other restaurants and lounges with the entrance presenting 2 live parrots and a toucan! The sun was shining beautifully and our waiter set up the umbrellas to shade our table. We enjoyed cocktails and some appetizers. The samosas were perfectly crispy and warm with a zesty dipping sauce. The calamari was tasty and came with a side of sweet potato fries. We did think the calamari could've been crispier. We also had the seafood salad that had a hefty amount of seafood, from large shrimps and scalps to thin slices of calamari. The salad came with two sides of dressing but already had a citrus vinaigrette drizzled on top and it was perfect as is. This establishment gets 5 stars just for the amazing service! From the valet to the hostess and the waiter, every staff at Mozambique was super friendly and accommodating. We came during lunch to celebrate a birthday and the hostess downstairs noticed the cake we were holding and offered to keep it in the fridge. At the end of our meal, the waitstaff brought out the cake with fresh plates with utensils and candles. We were in a seafood mood so only got seafood dishes from the menu. Was expecting more bold African flavor but the food we got didn't have that oomph. They were nonetheless enjoyable and the seafood tasted fresh. Laguna Beach: South African fare at this very large, unique restaurant with a rooftop that allows you to gaze on that beautiful Pacific Ocean. Wonderful ambience and plenty of heaters to dine comfortably on those rare cold nights. Fixed $ Valet parking only unless you can find a space on the streets. We came too late for Happy Hour, but definitely worth getting there early because the menu looked fabulous. There were so many choices for HH which drew us there, but we managed to find plenty of alternatives off the regular menu. Halal choices. Peri-Peri Chicken was very delicious with some spicy sauces on the side. The Portobello Mushroom stack was tender and devoured in no time. Very unique culinary delight. My friend and I went for a fancy dinner together because we had never dressed up and wanted to roleplay lol. The food was yummy, the prices were honestly pretty good, it was right by the beach so it was beautiful and very fun. We went at night so we couldn't see much, but during the day or a night with a full moon would be spectacular. The waiter also was very nice and let me try a sample of the wine before I ordered which I appreciated since I'd never really tried wine. Solid spot for happy hour on a rooftop! Happy hour is Wednesday - Sunday from 3-5pm which is great for locals and visitors. I got a tequila soda & lime for $8 and an order of the calamari. To start, the drink was made with love -- I'll leave it at that. The calamari was served in strips with sweet potato fries which threw me off a little bit, but everything tasted good (the dipping sauces were delish) and for $10, you can't really go wrong. The rooftop is definitely a vibe, try to get a seat by the glass if you're able to for optimal views. They have the rooftop covered with umbrellas to escape the summer sun which was really nice. The service was fast and everyone was really friendly. I want to come back and try some of their happy hour dishes for $15 -- they looked and smelled amazing. Just wanted to preface this review by saying that it was probably slammed packed for Valentine's Day and everyone was trying their best. From beginning to end, it probably took over two and a half hours--most of it spent waiting. We were served the amuse bouche course as soon as we sat down, which in hindsight was probably meant for another table. Spent close to 30 minutes waiting to order drinks and food. Took about half that to get starters but did not get entree for another 30. Flagged down someone and got the dishes right after, so I feel like our food was sitting out. Similar wait time for both the check and dessert. Honestly, I witnessed multiple frantic servers bring the wrong items to multiple tables. Saw multiple parties walk out after waiting much longer than us for entrees. Food was alright. Amuse bouche was not good; scampi was fine but the beet ravioli tasted like straight beet -- couldn't taste goat cheese or mint etc. Starters was nothing to write home about. Entrees (sea bass & ribeye) were the saving grace, quite good, flavorful, texture was right. Dessert (Portuguese butter pudding & flourless ganache) was OK, wouldn't elect to order it outside of the prix fixe. Overall, I feel like they oversold and under delivered for the holiday. Recently made our first visit to this restaurant and I've got to say the food was amazing. A bit pricey but satisfying and served well and the staff are gracious. I would caution you against making a reservation and not confirming that you can't sit upstairs. When we arrived we were asked whether we wanted to be up or down and we thought well upstairs would be great. And then once we got up there we were told that we had a limit to our time whereas downstairs we did not. So make sure you clarify that when you make your reservation. read more

My husband and I came here on Mother's Day weekend and spent over $300 (for context). Where do I start... unfortunately, this place was a huge disappointment for us. This restaurant has been bookmarked for me for years, and after seeing all the good reviews I had a certain level of expectation. We had a very different experience it seems, so not sure if we just went on a bad night or if we should try brunch instead of dinner, but I'm not inclined to give this place another try. I will try to keep to the top lines: 1) we were seated at 7 and didn't receive our food until 8:30. During this hour and a half, we were checked on by our server once for drinks, and once to place the order. Other than that, we were never spoken to or provided with updates on our food. We are generally pretty gracious and understanding if a restaurant is understaffed or experiencing delays for whatever reason, but no one let us know what was happening. For the price of the food, I would expect better hospitality - typically, restaurants of this caliber would explain the wait ahead of time or in the moment, and even provide free bread or something. Updates at the very least would have been appreciated. 2) while we waited 1.5 hours, staff came by at least three times asking if a dish was ours, then proceeding to ask multiple other tables the same question. It seems that the staff was all over the place. When we finally got our food, the server did not know who to give the food to, and kept trying to hand us the wrong dishes. This can be forgiven, but just added to the pattern of service being sloppy (for lack of a better term). To add to this, the host stand was also quite confused when we checked in and we witnessed a staff member tell their co host that they "should not be doing this job anymore" ..... 3) the food was okay, quite underwhelming. The biggest downfall was the steamed veggies that came with 2 of the 4 dishes. They were unseasoned veggies, the kind that come with hospital food or cheap hotel meals. What a cool place! Seriously you gotta go here sometime. There's 3 levels to enjoy! A rooftop bar, a 2nd floor club, and a ground level restaurant. Plus a huge bird cage with a couple parrots and a toucan! Came here on a Saturday and had such a great time. Make reservations as it can get pretty busy. The rooftop bar area was filled and ran out of even walk up list spaces. We ate at the restaurant which was honestly amazing. There are a few different rooms with different decorations making for a really fun experience. We sat on the patio just outside the Parrot Room right next to a cool fire pit. It was a nice intimate experience for me and my fiancé. We started off with a couple apps, the peri peri chicken pops (really skewers) which were super flavorful and actually quite a bit of food. We also got the ceviche which was tasty to the last bite. Can't forget the portobello mushroom appetizer which was refreshing and pretty big. For dinner we got a caesar salad to share, it was fresh and crisp with a delicious dressing. We also shared 2 entrees, the Mixed Grill and the Pan-seared Salmon. The mixed grill came with a peri peri chicken skewer, a wood grilled tiger prawn, a boerewors farmer's sausage, and a 6oz filet mignon. No lie it was all so good, the filet was cooked perfectly. It came with a side of grilled onions, perfect with the steak, and yukon gold mashed potatoes which were delicious. The Pan-seared Salmon was seasoned just right with lemon pepper and dill. It came with a succotash of potato, asparagus, fava beans, carrots, peas, yellow pepper, and arugula. I couldn't get enough of the succotash honestly. That was all served on top of a basil buerre blanc that paired perfectly with the dish. We were celebrating our anniversary and the restaurant was kind enough to bring us out a dessert of bread pudding and ice cream which we completely devoured! It was warm and just sweet enough. Our server was completely on top of everything, bringing fresh drinks and water the whole time. The main entrees were a bit slow to come out but she let us know we weren't forgotten and apologized for the delay. Totally acceptable. Definitely plan on going back again.
