Gulfstream remains one of those Newport Beach restaurants that knows exactly what it is and doesn't try too hard. We grabbed seats at the bar overlooking the kitchen, which is a great spot because dinner comes with a show. Lots of activity, lots to watch, and somehow everything runs like a well-oiled machine. Our server, Casey, was terrific. Always smiling, cute, attentive, and full of good suggestions. Most importantly, she has mastered the increasingly rare art of checking on you just enough--there when you need her without asking how everything tastes while you're mid-bite. We started with the shrimp cocktail, and Gulfstream does it right: big, cold shrimp accompanied by a duet of house-made cocktail and tartar sauces. Simple food done extremely well. The chopped kale and chicken salad was surprisingly amazing--and I don't usually get excited enough about kale to use the word "amazing." My only suggestion: chop up those giant whole cashews. Nobody needs to encounter a cashew the size of a Buick in the middle of a chopped salad. Then came the grouper sandwich with Gulfstream's famous coleslaw. This thing is up there with the iconic McDonald's Filet-O-Fish--except, obviously, what the Filet-O-Fish dreams of becoming when it grows up. Buttery bun, flaky white fish and that house-made coleslaw make for one seriously good sandwich. A real winner. We finished with the classic hot fudge sundae, because after shrimp, kale and grouper, apparently we felt we had earned it. It did not disappoint. Happened to chat a bit with a next sit mate who'd go the Gulfstream on a regular basis. So that encouraged us it should be a swell of a restaurant. We had the Cashew Chicken Curry served with rice, herbs and lime together with a side dish of Bell Peppers with feta cheese. Sounds simple but surprisingly this combo was very good. The other dish we had was Knife and Fork Ahi Tuna Burger. It was alright. I thought it was bland even with the sauce that came with it. The ahi tuna was barely there. On the menu it mentioned a choice of coleslaw or fries. Funny the waiter never asked which one we wanted. It came with vegetables that you'd mix in a burger. That was a letdown. My wife and I stopped by here for dinner and despite it being very busy (a good sign), we were able to get two seats at the bar counter when there was a last-second cancellation. It's a slick-looking, well-designed space with a well-dressed crowd. I ordered the cashew chicken curry with rice and a side of roasted bell peppers and feta cheese and my wife ordered the "knife and fork" ahi tuna burger. My dish was great: a creamy, flavorful curry with nicely prepared rice. I lived in Asia for over twenty years and it's not Asian in any way, but it worked as a dish nevertheless. The side dish of roasted bell peppers was excellent. The reason for the 3-star rating is the "knife and fork" ahi tuna burger, which was completely off. The menu describes the ahi tuna burger as follows: "pan-seared, served with fries or coleslaw (limited)." My wife, who always finishes her meal, only finished about half of the ahi tuna burger before giving it to me to finish while she took my curry dish. The ahi tuna wasn't pan-seared. It was like mushed, mashed tuna that was breaded with some sort of crust on top. It was unlike (in a bad way) any ahi tuna burger I've ever had. No French fries or coleslaw were served with the dish (which the bartender didn't alert us to). Instead, the dish had lettuce, onions, sliced tomato, and pickles as if it were a burger, but it wasn't one. When I searched the plate for the top part of the bun, there wasn't one so I had to eat the lettuce, onions, tomato and pickles on their own. It was a complete letdown as a dish and it was very different than what the menu described the dish as being. A restaurant this popular and well-established should do better than that. And the bartender, who was familiar with the dishes, should have stepped in and made it right. read more

OC is my home but IN is my new home. So when we come back we love to come here. The great? Our server Courtney who was friendly and attentive. Ambiance was on point for a busy Saturday evening. Reso at 7p, we got there early and sat outside on the cocktail patio. Kate one of the servers outside was OUTSTANDING and never stopped moving. She was soooo outgoing and handled the extremely busy section with ease and grace. I got a virgin Bloody Mary with blue cheese stuffed olives. Absolutely yummy. Once seated inside we immediately ordered the heavenly biscuits and I got the Caesar salad that was outstanding bc it had corn and ample dressing the the soft and crunchy croutons. I could eat just those lol. I got the ruby red trout and since they were out of Dover sole, my hubby got the crab cakes. We both got the wild rice with almonds. It came COLD which I wish we would've known. It was not his cup of tea. The crab cakes he said were not hot but not Cold. A little bit of a let down. Would love to see a more varied dessert menu. Only had lemon meringue which is such a specific choice, hot fudge sundae (basic) and tres leches. Add a creme brûlée or butter cake please! Or something appley. We had a great experience at Gulfstream. We started with the crab cakes, salmon appetizer, and the biscuits, and all of them were excellent. For our main course, we had the beef ribs, and they were absolutely outstanding. Definitely a must. The restaurant was clean, the food came out in good time, and the staff consistently checked on us throughout the meal to make sure everything was going well. Everyone was friendly and attentive, which made for a very enjoyable dining experience. One thing to keep in mind is that this isn't really a kid friendly restaurant. They don't provide high chairs or many conveniences for young children, and they make that clear. That said, they were never rude about it. We brought our own clip-on high chair, and they were perfectly accommodating. The staff was also very kind and friendly to our 15-month-old son, which we really appreciated. Even on a midweek evening, the restaurant was buzzing, and the staff noted it gets significantly busier as the weekend approaches. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between upscale and casual comfort. While the entire staff is welcoming, the bartenders truly steal the show. They are incredibly attentive, managing to provide lightning-fast service to bar guests while flawlessly crafting drinks for the main dining room. The menu offers an excellent surf-and-turf mix, catering to both adventurous diners and those seeking elevated casual classics like burgers and sandwiches. I opted for the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, which were excellent. Seared beautifully on both sides to highlight the crispy breadcrumbs, they were packed with fresh, generous portions of crab. The serving size is incredibly filling; honestly, a single crab cake could easily make a meal. When I wasn't thrilled with my initial choice of coleslaw, the bar staff didn't skip a beat, swiftly swapping it out for a side of delicious whipped potatoes. I'm surprised Gulfstream wasn't on my radar sooner, but it is a superb spot with a great vibe and a friendly crowd. For dinner, our server was Sara who was very good. Very attentive and never left us waiting for service. We started with the grilled artichokes which are only available in season. We love the aioli dipping sauce. I ordered the Mustard Barbecue Beef Ribs with Cole slaw. These fall off the bone ribs are so delicious! I love the mustard sauce. The Cole slaw is made with mayo, just the way I like it so I really enjoyed my meal. $37 My husband ordered the Cedar Plank Roasted Salmon with broccoli and mashed potatoes. I visited Gulfstream in Newport Beach today, July 9, 2026, and chose to sit in the outdoor lounge area where drinks and small bites are served. I left at approximately 2:22 p.m. The atmosphere was great, but I was disappointed with the service. My server, Candy, checked on me only a couple of times during my visit. I understand that servers get busy, and I have no issue when another team member delivers food or drinks. However, after my drink arrived, I waited quite a while without anyone checking back in. Eventually, I had to go inside and ask the bartender for my check because no one had come by. When Candy saw me inside, she mentioned that she had been keeping an eye on me. I respectfully told her I was disappointed because I didn't feel attended to. I have worked in the restaurant industry myself, and my brother has been a General Manager for The Cheesecake Factory, so I understand how demanding restaurant service can be. This did not seem like a situation where the restaurant was overwhelmed, as it was not particularly busy during my visit. I want to be clear that my intention is not to get anyone in trouble. In fact, I still left Candy a good tip because I know firsthand how challenging serving can be. My hope is simply that Gulfstream reminds its staff to give the same level of attention to every guest, including those seated in the outdoor lounge area. We had a small girl's dinner here and from start to finish it was such a positive experience. Emily is that definitely that girl. She was such an excellent server, and we wished she could sit with us and join us for dinner and drinks. Great service + great food all around. Tucked in the corner of the shopping plaza right off MacArthur and PCH in the same shopping plaza as Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar, I love that Gulfstream has two patios, one for dining and another just for drinks and light bites. There's also an indoor bar which seems to always be busy. My friend and I sat outside at the back patio with the fire pits which has a very limited food menu. If you want to dine outside just have the hostess seat you at the front patio which is for Al fresco dining. The ambiance was lovely and a great place for drinks and conversation. Enjoyed both the Trout Dip and Smoked Salmon which were both perfect. Also The Crush is my most favorite cocktail ever on a hot day. It's so refreshing. One thing worth noting is this is not a restaurant you want to visit after a visit to the beach in your flip flops, tank top and shorts. We dined at Gulfstream on a Friday night. Jackie was our server and she provided excellent hospitality during our dinner. The restaurant was busy and it's a little on the darker side. The noise level was moderate. We started off with the Heavenly biscuits and house salad (we requested to add bacon) for our appetizers. The biscuits were really good with butter and honey. The salad was so tasty and full of egg and bacon. I haven't had Catalina dressing in years so it was nice to have the salad served with it. For our entrees, we ordered the ribeye steak and shrimp dish. I had my eyes on the New Orleans shrimp but on the night we dined in, it was served as a Thai style with a mix of red and green curry and cashews. The flavor had a slight spicy kick to it but overall the dish was very tasty. The steak was served with a sauce on the side that complimented it well. For dessert, we had the hot fudge sundae. If it's any indication of their main entrees, I would not recommend coming here for the food . Crab Cakes 1000/10- this is one of my favorite dishes ever and honestly the best crab cakes I've ever had! If you know me or have been following this account for a while then you'd know this is my favorite dish and favorite restaurant. These crab cakes have actual jumbo lump pieces of crab in them and they're so buttery without that fishy sort of taste that some places have. It comes with a side of coleslaw but I always get the emerald kale cashew salad as my side instead and it's my favorite salad ever! It's made with a peanut sauce that's perfectly balanced, and the salad is dressed just right - not too heavy or light. I absolutely love the crunch of the cashews in the salad which adds perfect texture. Heavenly Biscuits 10/10- made with rosemary, these biscuits are perfectly buttery and flaky. They are so delicious and best when served piping hot straight from the oven. They're amazing with butter, and honey is at every table specifically for these biscuits since they're such a popular appetizer. The rosemary adds this perfect herbal note without being overwhelming. Tres Leches 10/10- this happens to be my favorite dessert also! We always get the tres leches without the whipped cream and caramel and it's absolutely incredible. I love how it's completely drenched in that sweet condensed milk - it makes every bite so moist and rich. The cake itself is so light and airy, and it just absorbs all that amazing milk mixture perfectly. Lemon Meringue Pie 10/10- this was so good and I'm completely obsessed with the graham cracker crust! It's buttery and has that perfect crunch. The lemon filling is the perfect balance of sweet and citrusy - not too tart but still bright and fresh. The meringue on top is fluffy and light, and it really makes the whole dessert perfect. Everything at Gulfstream was an absolute 10/10 tonight! This has been my favorite restaurant since I was 10 years old, and I love so many of their dishes, but these all happen to be my absolute favorites. They executed everything perfectly as always. The wait was two hours long but we grabbed a drink at the bar, my mom who doesn't drink often loved the grape cocktail and I really loved the signature martini. This is has been my favorite restaurant all my life even when it was The Cowboy. It's beautiful inside, cozy, warm, elegant, and the lighting is relaxing. I love the patio seating, the bar, and the booths. The trout dip is a must have. They have taken it on and off the menu, but it's always a must. When it was off the menu, they would still make it. Their oysters are exceptional. They used to make very nice thin shoestring fries that I would chow down and order a plate of with whatever I got. I miss those delicious crispy shoestring fries! So the recipe on this has changed a tad which is always fine. I just miss the large beans instead of the macadamia nuts. Were they lima beans? 4/2/2026- Gulfstream (Newport Beach) This was easily one of the best service experiences I've had in a very long time--10 out of 10 across the board. From the moment we sat down, the entire staff was on point. Friendly, attentive, and incredibly professional. It wasn't just our server--there were multiple team members consistently checking in to make sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling intrusive. That kind of coordinated service is rare. One of the standout touches was the martini service. We ordered dirty martinis with blue cheese olives, and when we got about halfway through, our server returned with fresh, chilled martini glasses and new olives, then poured the remaining drink into the fresh glass. That level of attention to detail is classy and something you don't see often. The oysters were outstanding. I'm not usually a fan of Pacific Northwest oysters, but these were excellent--deep-cupped, clean, and packed with oyster liquor. Add a little cocktail sauce and they were some of the best West Coast oysters I've had. For my main course, I had the Dover sole. It was good, though not quite at the same level as everything else. That said, the coleslaw was excellent and rounded out the plate nicely. Prices are what you'd expect for a quality Newport Beach restaurant--on the higher side, but completely justified given the experience. GREAT wine selection, loved the sancerre Grilled artichokes are a must , instead of the Hawaiian they just and a prime ribeye but still so good , 4 instead of 5 stars because the sole was just meh, it was breaded and was kind of starchy . I have to update this review to a Five-star +++. Last night my husband and I dined in the bar section and the service was so amazing, the staff are so attentive and friendly. We had a lovely red blend wine with the grilled artichoke appetizer- it was the best we have ever had- plus the chopped vegetable salad with the signature cheeseburger-all 3 were absolutely yummy! I forgot to take photos because I was too busy eating and before I knew it, there was nothing left on my plate, lol! read more
