My husband and I finally went to eat at the Eldo for his birthday. We was excited to try it. Well, not good first impression as two young girls were just sitting at the booth chatting away. They did not greet us and just said we would have to wait, even though it did not look busy. About 10 minutes later they asked where would we like to sit and we chose the back patio which looked nice but it was too dark. I asked about the lighting and our server said most of the bulbs did not work. THE FOOD: my husband had the beef Wellington and he liked it. I tasted it and it was very, very salty. I had the chicken pot pie, served with a side of peas. It was good but nothing special. THE SERVICE: SLOW, even though It was not a busy night. Our server was a nice young man but wore way too much, awful smelling cologne. Not once were we asked about more drinks, nor were our waters refilled! I have always been very interested in checking out this restaurant and i finally was invited by a friend of mine . I must say the ambience of the restaurant is very pleasing and welcoming. My waitress had such a pleasant attitude & was very helpful with any questions i had regarding the food menu. There so many great delicious food options from steaks, to baja shrimp tostadas, to even my favorite pastas ! & other wonderful dishes. Even to their alcoholic drinks. RIBEYE!!! If you are looking for one look no further! They have a nearly 30 day dry aged ribeye and all I have to say is WOW! Blows me away every time! They have the typical salt and pepper at the table and they also elevate the experience by offering "gunpowder" seasoning which is their own blend! AND their own recipe of ketchup. The Eldo will always be an epic local go-to and a must-visit for anyone who's never been. They have a great drink menu, and the vibe is dimly lit with a cozy atmosphere, but still very family-friendly. I personally love their Beef Wellington, pork chops, and their zucchini (which is amazing), along with their ranch... honestly, all of their sauces are so good. The only bummer is they used to have the most amazing chicken strips--my friends and I would literally drive miles just for them--but the new ownership changed them. :( The service can typically be a little slow, probably because they're almost always busy, and they could definitely use more parking. Love this place! I have lived in Long Beach since 2022 and this has been our go-to place to celebrate all that time. The food is great, ambience is pleasant, and servers have always been lovely. The ONLY bad thing about this place, are the hostesses.. They all have seemed pretty unfriendly and relatively bored...and if you have a reservation and the place is empty, they are going to make you wait at least 15 mins. Every time. But the servers are great! And the portions and quality you get for the prices is incredible. I just wish they'd use the same metrics to hire the hostesses as they do the servers. read more

Parking is pretty limited -- your options are either the small lot, a darker area behind the building, or nearby residential streets. The portions are HUGE! We ordered appetizers, and about 10 minutes later our entrees came out too, which felt a bit rushed. There was so much food that we couldn't even finish half of it. I ordered the salmon pesto and absolutely loved it -- tons of flavor and really delicious. For dessert, we had the butter cake, and it was amazing. Overall, I'd recommend giving this place a try. I passed this place for years. Finally tried this place out with reservations. This place gets really packed. Parking can be difficult to find, pending on the hours you arrive. Parking is tight, meaning if you have a large truck it can pose a problem to fit in the tight spaces that are provided. Checked in with the front host. Wait time was 15 minutes. We were greeted and seated at our tables. The ambiance was very nice. Since this is a South Africa establishment, you had some type of sense you were in the Saraha. Ordered drinks of Beer and cocktails. Delivered to us in 5 minutes. Prompt service! Ordered Beef Straganov and Beef Pot Pie. Entrees did not dissapoint! All was fresh and delicous. The Eldo has a super fun and casual vibe. Their menu really does have something for every palate, making it a great place to gather with friends, family, and more. It gets pretty loud because of the crowds, but it's still a nice and fun ambiance. My friend and I tried the Shrimp au Gratin, and it was amazing!! I would definitely get this appetizer again. For the main, we shared the ribeye after all the rave reviews. It was a very good steak, and the onion rings were amazing! The veggies were nothing to write home about, but we figured we better get some veggies in. We also tried the Malva Butter Cake, and it was HUGE. So we were going around trying to find a place where we can just have some drinks and relax and decompress. I've been disappointed since the pandemic with every place we've been to. Unfortunately, we live in Santa Monica. This place is in Long Beach. This is my new local place. Keley is fabulous. She's a bartender there Dan near seven days a week. The drinks spectacular. Okay long overdue review. We went here for Valentine's dinner. Originally we had their signature steak in kind. But we saw the pasta menu, and quickly changed our minds. It did not disappoint! I got the creamy chicken pesto and he got the short rib gnocchi. Both were absolutely delicious. It's quite a popular local spot. The Eldo is a bar/pub with South African flavors and it's located off Studebaker and Spring in Long Beach, across the street from El Dorado Park. I came for happy hour on a weekday and they offered $2 off appetizers. I got sliders, veggie samosas, and a side of fries. I feel that the sliders tasted great. The buns were light and nicely buttered, they came with a "pink sauce", and the beef and caramelized onions nicely rounded out the burger. The samosas were my favorite item of the meal. It packed flavors that you don't normally get in an Indian-style samosa. Maybe because they serve the samosas with sweet chili sauce rather than chutneys; however, I would order it again. As for the fries, I felt that they were crispy; however, I felt as if it had an aftertaste that I didn't enjoy. If I get fried dishes, then I'd probably go with onion rings; however, I think that I'd like to try more of their South African offerings as they're unique! read more

Had my first visit with my mother the evening of Thursday the 5th of March 2026 for evening rations. This establishment has a South African theme and I saw both the USA and South African flags flown outside. This establishment is only open for evening rations and was very busy when I arrived and there was a wait for a table. We were called and seated. The waitress pointed us to a QR Code and I told her neither of us do QR codes so she brought us a tablet that had the menu. This establishment does NOT have paper menus. Apparently this establishment wants people to go digital which I GREATLY resent as I am an analogue guy and I do not want to go digital!!!!! This is the one and only reason why I am giving such a low grade. Men's washroom was clean and had paper towels available... good. I ordered the cheeseburger and shake combo deal. The burger was quite good as were the French Fries and the chocolate shake was excellent. My mother ordered the lamb and was very satisfied though she took most of it home. Normally I would automatically give the lowest score possible if a sit down restaurant lacks a written paper or laminated menu or if an establishment forces me to use a kiosk to place an order. However I requested a sample of Biltong and the waitress honoured that request. For this reason I am adding an additional point for a total of two points instead of the one point that I would have otherwise awarded. If a letter grade was assigned as is done in school, this establishment would get a D. NOTE: If this establishment had a paper or laminated menu available, I would have awarded four out of five possible points which would have equated to a letter grade of B. The reason I would not have given a perfect score is because I noticed that some of the guys who work at this establishment wore their shirts untucked which I consider to be highly unprofessional. read more

My family and I went to THE ELDO to celebrate my son's 55th birthday last night. We were expecting great Rib Eye's and a great dining experience based on our past visits. This time however begining with the glasses of water that were promptly brought out. Our first reaction, all 6 of us was abject disgust at the taste of the iced water. It had an ultra strong moldy taste and odor and awful aftertaste like used dishwater or that it had been filtered through old, crusty, dirty filthy gym socks. The entire water service, all 6 glasses was unbelievably nauseously stale. No amount of lemon could eradicate the smell and taste of sewer water? We asked for bottled water but we were informed that there wasn't any available. I also ordered iced tea with the thought that the tea would be made with the same disgusting Pliny Beach tap water. I'm a Vietnam veteran and i have experienced some really awful water before but this was absolutely the worst I've ever tasted. GROSS! It was enough to gag a maggot. I might suggest either install a reverse osmosis filter or if there is one already, thoroughly replace the filter and clean the algae and mold out of it with bleach. The awful water put a bit of a damper on the rest of the meal. I had asked for a baked potato with the toppings be served on the side along with some Worcestershire sauce for the potato. It took three (3) requests over fifteen minutes to finally have a container of Worcestershire sauce brought to the table. By the time I was able to prepare the potato, the broccoli and carrot side had gone cold. The steaks were acceptable but not of the same quality as we all remembered from past ELDO visits. We had an appetizer of fried zucchini and two big Pretzles which were served hot fresh and tasty. My main issue was quality of the water. GAWDAWFUL does not EVEN begin to describe that HORRIBLE experience. read more

There were about 9 of us for a Birthday dinner; the servers were on top of the service and making sure our orders were in. The only thing that I did not like is that I could not do a substitution for the peas that came on the side of the shepherd's pie. I would give the shepherd's pie a (8/10) . It was very tasty. For my drink I ordered a French 57, which tasted somewhat like skittles, and I loved it. Stopped by to try this out after golf. We came around 5pm on a Sunday and the wait was about 45 minutes. It didn't seem packed due to seeing a good amount of empty tables but we didn't question it and waited. We got seated outside where they're were only about 4 heater lamps. Definitely not enough to cover all tables, or the one we sat in. The South African food was delicious, however anything that was considered bar/pub food was mediocre. I enjoyed the lamb samosas, and prawn curry the most. We also tried the fries which was a pretty small basket for what it cost, and the steak nachos. The cheese was a weird light orange color, not sure what it was made of. My biggest critique would be the service. When my friend asked for steak sauce and a box to go, multiple servers forgot and ended up giving us other peoples items. Our main server was apologetic on their behalf, but it seemed like the restaurant was low on staff. I would definitely give this place a try again, and would stick to the South African dishes. read more

I made a reservation for a party of 10 the day before and was accommodated with the stipulation that everyone ordered entrees per the manager. I'm not sure how they would dictate that as it wasn't stated again upon being seated; but it was not an issue. The waitress was on her JOB and managed our party well. Everyone enjoyed their food except my friend that ordered the filet, she wanted MedWell; but got MedRare...they re-did the whole meal. Such a delightful business. Plenty of parking out front, unless it is during the dinner rush hour or a big game is on TV. We were greeted by friendly staff at the front and caught a drink at the fully stocked bar. By the way, they have a great whisky and craft beer section. Came into the Eldo because I found out from a friend that they do half off wine bottles on Wednesdays! The bar was moderately busy but with the fast service you wouldn't be able to tell! My friend got a cocktail and she was obsessed! The bartender's drinks are delicious and made it to the table so fast! Our server was Emily and she gave the greatest service! She was very prompt in greeting us and taking our orders, and always checking in to make sure we were good! To top it off she was so kind and never made us feel rushed and made us feel at home.
