Super scammy, pushy, and predatory people. Stood on our porch claiming that it was necessary to "update our account due to issues with our power company" before attempting to forcefully have us switch providers. The guy was incredibly rude, did not answer any questions, and overtalked me for the whole interaction. Wording was super vague, but wanted me to verify point of sale, asked for a bunch of private information, and overall wasted a lot of time. Since the bill is under my name/account, they opted to flat-out lie to my roommate about who they were and what they were here for in order to get me to come to the door. The funniest part? If you check their TOS, the claim that they're a renewable energy-provider isn't even true: They don't sell you green electric energy straight from their own windmills or solar-farms, but will buy, at best, some REC's, likely so they can claim the technicality in the case of any legal action or review. To quote from their website: " 15. RENEWABLE ENERGY CERTIFICATES. Mpower's renewable plan ensures that electricity equal to 100% of the customer's electricity usage is offset by Renewable Energy Certifcates (RECs) from renewable resources such as but not limited to hydro, wind, and solar. Mpower may require no greater than 12 months after the end of each calendar year under of this Agreement to procure any renewable credit shortfall that had arisen in the renewable content of electricity sold under this Agreement from the prior calendar year. Mpower does not guarantee that this product will be offered in the future or on a continuing basis and will notify customers in advance if Mpower is no longer able to purchase renewable energy credits " Not only is going door-to-door in the middle of the pandemic ridiculous, but these guys were selling w/o giving anywhere near the information required for people to know what they're buying in a low-income neighborhood where much of the population is especially vulnerable due to language barriers - many people in the area are elderly/college students as well. Forget an informed purchase - it seems the company pay structure is purely commission-based and lets their workers practice false representation, deliberate omission of key information, and literally invade your privacy while targeting vulnerable areas. In essence, they're fugazi middlemen attempting to get a percentage by skimming off of your energy-bill, all the while merely pretending to deliver you 100% renewable energy. I find the idea of using sustainability as a guise to con people while claiming a technicality to be especially disgusting. Don't give these scumbags any of your time. read more

It is scary how many positive reviews are on here... The tenant that lived in my apartment before me was elderly and mentally disabled. We inherited "mPower" gas from her. I had never heard of it. Our small studio apartment was somehow costing 200-350 dollars a month for gas. Living for ten years in NYC we knew this number was wayyy off. After looking high and low for the reason, we found the small "mPower" print on our bill. These people go door to door and prey on the sick and elderly and get them to agree to a gas bill that they absolutely can not pay. We could barely afford it let alone someone who isn't working. By the time our cancellation went through they had already squeezed another 400 out of us. National Grid says it's out of their hands. If you or a friend ever find your gas bull soaring I urge you to see if it's mPower. If there is an elderly person in your family or friend circle make sure this doesn't happen to them. Pushy, I told them they were bothering me in the middle of a work meeting and they tried to lie to me and answer prompts on the phone while the person tried to give me thumbs up or down depending on what the person on the phone was asking. Felt super scammy and pushy, Even if they are not a scam their way of conducting business is absolutely horrific and I cant even imagine how many elderly people they strong arm into switching to their business. A young woman in workout clothes somehow got into my building & knocked on my door Sunday evening - from MPower claiming to be an affiliate of ConEd. She said my building was flagged for going over appropriate energy usage & for contributing to pollutants in the area, and that she had been sent to the building to "help activate" something in my account. I was very confused, and luckily my neighbors walked by and immediately recognized the scam, so they pressed her for details as to why ConEd did not notify us of this visit, confirming if she was actually sent by ConEd & asked questions about her flagging claims. She could only repeat that she was sent to help us activate something on our accounts due to being "flagged." When she clearly could not provide legit answers, we said we'd be contacting ConEd directly & asked her to leave. She rolled her eyes, sighed, and left. While MPower itself may be an existing company, the way they go about obtaining customers is fraudulent & scammy. BEWARE! read more

She started off with telling me my apartment got flagged for using too much energy and they are trying to find out who is it and that she comes from ConEd. That turned into her telling me how I can save money and then tricked me into just answering some questions reviewing the discussion. I have been trying to call them and cancel but no response. I can't believe Mpower is soliciting door to door during the pandemic. Totally insane. With that out of the way, the sales rep actually gave me a story about how Mpower is an "energy safety company" (his words, not mine) and that he was here to check the air quality of the neighborhood because PSENG (local energy company) was going over on usage. This is a lie. Mpower is a power reseller. They buy power wholesale from whichever energy company owns the lines and resell back to customers. This is totally legal, and not necessarily all that bad. What makes Mpower awful is how the sales reps lie about the truth. When I asked the rep if Mpower was a power reseller he said "No, I am not here to sell anything or sign you up for anything." Lies. After denying, I asked him is Mpower's rates are subject to additional fees and if the monthly or annual rates would be subjected to increases. He said "no". More lies. Please, Mpower, just get your reps to actually tell it like it is. Also, don't show up at my door during the pandemic, just call my phone like every other annoying tele sales rep so I can aggressively hang up on you. read more

MPower rep at my door at 6 pm wasted 15 minutes of my time trying to get me to "switch to a local supplier" even though I kept repeating that I was perfectly happy with CONED. She kept talking as if "being local" was better for my wallet, (which turns out it really is not). She did not use the clean energy argument. Couldn't get rid of her, I guess I am too polite. After a lot of time she started telling me my new rates as if was a done deal. I had to grab my bill back from her hands and tell her that if anything would be changed on my bill I would be very angry. How can these people look at the mirror every day and not be disgusted by what they see? Telling lies to citizens and robbing them of their money for the same service which they are already getting. read more

Read the other reviews. This is a scam. 1. They will tell you their rates are "cheaper" or "competitive, but providing green energy". This is false. Their rates are noticeably higher. Your energy bill will go up. You can easily check this against other providers by cost per kWh. 2. They will, as mentioned above, state their energy is "green", etc. This is again partially false. They do provide a portion of your energy by green sources, but are literally no better than most suppliers on that front. The only widely respected independent certification company for energy providers is Green-e, a program of the Center for Resource Solutions, a San Francisco-based nonprofit. In New York, only two companies are certified by Green-e for residential green energy products: Ambit Energy has a 100% wind option called Ambit Green Northeast, and Constellation NewEnergy has a 100% wind option called Wind Power. Any other energy provider claiming 100% is not verified and you should be very skeptical based on choosing them since NY energy laws are a bit dated and can be "worked" around. 3. This is where it gets wildly fascinating. As you can probably tell-- I signed up for Mpower, my bill went up, and I decided to do some research to only find out it is a scam both on your wallet and on your heart for our planet. But it went a bit further than that. After I cancelled Mpower and signed up for Constellation, the day before my Constellation contract was going to begin, I received notice from them that I terminated my contract. I did no such thing so I was quite confused. After many phone calls with them and ConEd, we figured out what happened-- Mpower called and used my previous information that I gave them to lie to ConEd and tell them I was not switching and staying with Mpower. This caused quite a headache and actually forced me to use Mpower for another month against my wishes. I realize that to many reading this it sounds "crazy" or "exaggerated" or whatever words may come to mind when reading a negative review, or rant even ha, of a company online. That said, all of this is true to the word and I hope you at the very least stay away from this shameful company. If you have already been sucked into their web of lies and deceit then I suggest you contact the Public Service Commission of New York and lodge a formal complaint. Additionally, for those wondering if this is legal-- it's not. This is for all intensive purposes fraud and likely tortious interference with contract as well. Just left Mpower. Simply could not find out if they really use clean energy. Their website says 100% renewable. I don't believe that. The sales tactic that I fell for was a scam (the usual, "don't tell my supervisor I am here," then giving instructions on how to answer). Does that mean their renewable claim is false, too? Tried to find out from Con Ed and state website, but that info was hidden. I thought I got a table from Con Ed last year that showed they were not. They offered me a really low rate as a senior, but I am done. On the Con Ed site, it just linked me to their website. That is no way to verify their claim. It took patience and persistence, but it wasn't otherwise challenging to go back to Con Ed. read more

I have been a customer with Mpower Energy for a year now and it's a really great service! The funny thing about how I signed up is someone knocked on my door; lol, I was a bit surprised that companies are still doing this. But the sales rep was really nice and was very knowledgeable about clean energy. I have been hoping that the electric companies would switch to solar or wind power and finally they are doing it! I didn't even really have to change much, since I still get a bill from the utility; the only difference is that now the bill reflects a charge for electricity from Mpower (which is for the clean energy) and the delivery part of it is still paid to the utility. I can honestly tell anyone that may be skeptical about signing up because someone is knocking on your door that it is a good service and to do it! Thank you, well done! read more

This is a scam. Don't show them your bill and don't even give them your phone number. The two agents at the door promised to lower my electric bill but could not provide any guarantee. Their only job is to sucker people into signing up with Mpower, the monthly bill afterwards is none of their concern. The scammyness just jumps out during the conversation - 1. Asking to see your bill, which poses a risk of identity theft. 2. Staying their supervisor cannot call if they are on the premises, which in truth is to avoid any liability issues ( their rep concocted a reason that one of their reps was bitten by a dog - total bullshit). 3. Non-stop coercing to sign up with Mpower right then and there, so the poor reps can get a bonus for scamming people. Call the super and get them out of your building! read more

Someone knocked on my door on a holiday making a false presentation like everyone here that they were here to check my bill because I was paying to much and could get a better rate. The sales rep spoke quickly and there was no straight answers. In receiving the phone call I listened to the other rep who quoted a guaranteed rate for a year which was more than Con Edison while listening I went on to my favorite place "YELP" for some real reviews and guess what my suspicions were confirmed. Persistent Sales Rep, a liar what a scam. Had I been a person who did not understand KWH rates I would have been scammed. I immediately called Con Edison to make sure a block was put on the account. I cant help to wonder how many seniors they have been able to scam with this go green which by the way is the only thing the sales person appeared to be able to say quickly. read more

This 'service' should be stopped immediately. It is more than a scam, as one other reviewer said, it is a blatant lie and their salesmen are nothing but snake oil salesmen. We were totally conned and misled by the salesman and signed up for the service. EVERY single electricity bill since has been MORE expensive. I called to cancel their service several weeks ago and have been harassed by soliciting calls from them ever since. This weekend I received a note confirming our contract with them - and that is after yelling at one of their reps earlier this week on one of their thousand unsolicited calls. They unfortauntely scammed my boyfriend into switching over by lying about being from our current provider. The rep repeated this a few times, saying the provider "sends them out". When I came home and hear about this, alarm bells went off. I called our company and they verified they never send people out like that. Now they are helping us block our account. I also called mpower immediately to say do not enroll us and/or cancel us. I'll let you know how things turn out.... Update: we worked it out with our provider and the cancellation with mpower went through. We reported the rep to them and they seemed concerned. I actually got an email follow up from them on this site as well. However, I still would recommend you approach this company with caution as I've heard similar stories as mine from others and also, I looked it up and they were actually more expensive than our current provider. tl;dr: A sales rep showed up to my door inside an apartment complex soliciting me with fancy brochures and also literally knew essentially nothing about an electricity bill but tried to push a sale on me anyway. I've actually worked door-to-door electricity sales of this nature (although it was small business sales and not residential) and the method is relatively straightforward. There are only two things a salesman really needs to understand. 1. Supply charges 2. (occasionally) Delivery charges The rest is generally out of the salesman's control (tax, GRT, etc). The pitch is this: If my number is smaller than what you're paying now then sale! I actually showed this guy my bill and all he said was he didn't know how to read it and then said "support green energy". So I asked him what my supply rate would be. He literally said, "I don't know, I was told to tell you that it would be cheaper than what you're paying now." So I said, "If you can't even read my electricity bill, tell me what I'm paying now or what rate you're offering me, how can you to suggest that you know I'll be getting cheaper electricity?" He literally just stared at me and said, "I guarantee you it'll be cheaper". I was only in the apartment for a few more months anyway, so I gave it a shot because it's green energy and I was also banking on the idea that I'd be saving money. Low and behold, the price of my electricity went up significantly, a near 33% increase in my rate. Are you f****** kidding me? Same story as the rest - 2 reps came into my apartment and knocked on our door. They blatantly lied and said they were from National Grid and wanted to see the bill to "reduce" our gas rate since our apartment is part of a "low carbon initiative". The lady took the bill and pointed at "ESCO" and said she was part of the Energy SAVING Committee (Not Energy Service Company). It was uncomfortable and pushy. As soon as they left, I called ConED and National Grid to put blocks on my account. I asked the reps in ConED and National Grid about any downsides to having a "block" on my account - the only thing the block does is ensure the account holder has to call ConED/National Grid before being able to switch to another energy company. read more

I arrived and before I could get a word out of my mouth one ~salesman~ said "Excuse me mam, could I just see your last electric bill and we can get things started" I told them I was very much not interested and that they should leave. They responded by telling me that they were with "Mpower Direct", a "partner company of ConEd", I told them to leave and went inside. I then went on the internet and saw they had some bad reviews. One girl asked me to allow her to use my bathroom; she then stole two new deodorants, toothbrushes, & bars of soap who knows what else; I keep extra of every toiletries one needs for good hygiene. Wonder how much they pay people for the fake 5 star reviews? Or maybe that's just their "sales" people doing that. Had two encounters with Mpower sales people. One at my buddies business. My friend told the rep there is no way he is going to switch. Not interested. He told him politely to leave his store. Dude keeps trying. Would not let up. Took a bit but he finally left. Second encounter was in my apt building. I'm friends with my landlord. I hear knocking on door in the hallway so I go out and see what's up. Younger kid in the hallway so I ask him what he wants. He goes into his sales pitch. I cut him off. Not interested. You need to leave. Says I don't have the tight to tell him to leave. Hahaha... holy crap. I told him multiple times I'm friends with the building owner and he does not want any solicitors in the building. So I go back to my apt to get my phone and this guy now has my downstairs neighbor held hostage with his crap. Downsstairs neighbor tells him he is not interested. Dude would NOT let up. Super aggressive. So if that's the way these reps are traind to be (Too many people complaining of the same techniques so they ARE trained by Mpower to use these aggressive tactics) then they should expect at times to be met with the same aggression. He finally left after things really started to escalate. I couldn't believe this dude. I'm 220lbs and heavily tattooed... not that means much but just imagine an elderly person. I have just cancelled my account with MPower Energy and would like to follow-up on my experience and why I cancelled. Sales Rep knocked on my door around 6 p.m. on December 1 and introduced himself and said that he needed to see my bill to verify my service (Not appropriate). I asked him if I could do this over the phone and he said I could have but too many months have gone by and it was too late. (Not true.) Like and idiot, I showed him my bill and then felt pressured into just signing up, I did. He left and I did some research and found that MPowered has nearly 80 complaints with the BBB. I also realized he had never taken my email address to send me a confirmation email. The whole process was really uncomfortable. Even if I could save money with MPower Energy, I believe it is an untrustworthy company and would rather pay more to do business with a company I can trust and doesn't knock on my door after business hours. I congratulate them on finding another person in New York that didn't know better than to close the door and ignore the sales person.
