I don't know how this place got a 5 Star rating!! I like yelp and took my car here. It needed a new transmission. They sent it to a mechanic in National City. It took a month and came in $300 over estimate. The kid told me he didn't understand transmissions enough to explain why it cost more. Two months later and with a 12 month guarantee on the transmission, my car seems okay. The reason I'm giving One star--there are Master Mechanic certifications all over the office but that mechanic was never there all the times I visited. It's just two young kids that aren't very way less than "master" mechanics. After they got the transmission in they called and told me I needed an alternator. I said okay and let them replace it, adding another $200 to my bill. As it turns out when I picked up my car they had left my ignition in the "on" position, which would drain the battery. (It's an older car so it can go into the on position without the key)---I doubt I really needed that alternator-- they had probably just left my ignition switch on. Next...they told me they needed about $300 more because I needed a starter. After one month without my car and all these "added on" repairs and money I said No!! After over two months of driving my car every day it has not had a "non start" situation!! I don't know if these guys are taught to add unneeded repairs or if they are super inexperienced but this place does NOT deserve a 5 star rating!!! read more

I have been going to this place since they were Midnight Rendezvous. How I heard about this place was through word of mouth and I trusted my friend who told me about this place because he is quite the mechanic snob himself. I haven't gotten too much work done here thus far, mainly oil changes and they have replaced my alternator before, but the work and service has been great! Vu and his team work in a really timely manner for you to have your car back and let you know ahead of time what you should be expecting in terms of a quote, very honest in my opinion. In addition, if for some reason they can't fix it asap, they will let you know and give you the option of what you want to do; I never feel pressured or hustled. I highly recommend this place for not just Japanese cars but also other makes because they are also experienced in those as well. I would recommend calling ahead of time to check availability of when you can get your car in, but I have never had a problem waiting too long to get any services done. read more

I've finally got around to writing a review for this place. I decided to go to this body shop to get an oil change due to the amazing review on yelp. This was the first time getting my own oil change from a body shop since moving out of my home for college. So I really didn't know what to expect. Firstly, this place isn't the cheapest oil change, but it is the best value for the relatively low price (/w mentioning the yelp reviews). It was about $21. So I first parked my car and walked into the shop. It was a small place with two rooms (looked like one office and one storage room) and a small waiting room. I was slightly skeptical because I would've expected a larger place because of the raving reviews. However, the looks were deceiving. This place was an amazing body shop with really knowledgeable people. The oil change was about 20 min. long, but it came with a free basic inspection and all the knowledge that I could ask for. I'm not a car savvy person, I just want to get from one place to another at a very low price w/o compensating for quality auto services. As I was waiting for the oil change, I exchanged some words with the guy running the place. He was a really nice guy with a nice and helpful wife. This place is a really nice place with a relaxed vibe. I saw a grill outside and I could tell I was partially interrupting their lunch (Sorry guys!) Anyways, after speaking to the head mechanic, the workers helped explain the problems with the car. I have an old mid 1990s Toyota and I really didn't want to fix it up that much. After they listed a bunch of problems, I just asked him one question, "If I come back after 3000 miles for another oil change, will I still be in good shape?" He responded, "Sure, none of your problems are really that urgent. I'll check on them again when you come back." Then he told me which problems were the most to least important/urgent and gave me quick quotes on them. I was happy to hear what he said. Now, I can drive worry free for 3,000 miles with my college budget (but I'll eventually will have to deal with the problem, man). This place is a really good body shop and deserves to get 5 stars. This place is going to be my auto body shop for a long time (until I leave San Diego). Also, this guy works at Volkswagen dealership shop, so I'm sure he really knows his stuff, so go here if you want dealership service with reasonable price. These guys are really nice, chill, and very concise with their explanations. I came here due to yelp reviews, and wasn't disappointed. They don't charge for check-engine light code checks. They gave me a quote, and didn't even push me to get the work done. I also said that I may have a slight oil leak, because I started to smell engine oil. After an inspection, they said it was just some oil that spilled during the last oil change (which was done from the dealership). No charge for that inspection. I checked the quote for the repair (thermostat replacement), and the price was actually very fair. They said "thanks.." as if they wanted me to leave haha.. no no! Shut up and take all my money! :P... They fixed my vehicle in a timely manner, and I was off on my way :). I saw two other customers there while I waited, and one customer actually had a lot of issues on her car. They politely spotted the issues for her, fixed what she actually came for, and didn't even impose on her of "urgent work." I'm just finally glad that I finally found "my mechanic." They gave me a 10% discount because I mentioned that I found them on yelp haha. read more

My headlight bulb went out and I tried to change the bulbs on my car myself but failed. It seemed simple enough but I just couldn't take the bulb out. I stopped by today just to ask if they could change the bulb and Vu helped me out. He was really nice and taught me a bit about car headlight bulbs. He did have to bust out some tools to help twist and remove the burnt bulb so I'm glad I didn't try anything stupid. And since it was such a short job he did it for free! I guess it's a typical thing to do for autoshops, but either way I'm grateful that he took some time to help me out. Just giving a little shout out and a thank you to Vu! I'm jumping on the MR Mechanics bandwagon. I found out about this place on Yelp. It was a toss up between this one and another auto shop down the street. I gave both locations a call for a standard oil change. There was no wait time for both shops and the prices were roughly the same. The only difference was the person at MR Master Mechanics was honest. I wanted a quote on a transmission flush but he deemed unnecessary. A once coin toss was now a 2-headed quarter. This made my decision a lot easier so I jumped into my car and I was headed there way. I met with How and whom I spoke over the phone. He told me that it would take only 15-20 minutes. I stood around the garage area to make sure he knew what he was doing. I let him do his business while I took a closer look at my tires. I found a couple nails embedded in my left rear tire. I pointed this out to him and he told me that he would help me find a quote for new tires. He also recommended to rotate my tires for an extra $9. However, he did also mention that Discount Tires would do it for free. It's always a pleasant surprise to come across a mechanic that doesn't steal every dime from your pocket. I think it's safe to say that I found my new auto shop. I will be loyal customer for years to come as long as they keep up their standards. Vroom vroom! read more

Just bought my first used Audi 3 months ago, and was looking for a local mechanic to take care my car. Came across Vu at MR Master Mechanic in La Jolla, he is honest / reliable, and helpful with answering all my questions and concerns. First car incident happened last month when my Audi stalled and wouldn't start in the cold. I hit up Vu, and he rushed over with his crew to get the car towed to his shop. On the same day, he repaired the fuel pump problem that caused the car to stall with a very reasonable price. The whole process was very simple and professional. Here, they were actually very friendly and go above and beyond. I brought my car in for a faulty coil, which they replaced, but also filled my tires with air and told me they have tire rot, which I knew something like that was happening with my tires but couldn't pin point it. Back when I used to live in San Diego, MR Master Mechanics were my go-to guys for any car maintenance issues. Since I worked off of Miramar Rd., my choices were endless. There's an auto shop literally on every street corner. These guys, however, were the only ones who specialized in VWs, and that's what drew me to them. Oil changes are fairly priced. Since it's better to use synthetic oil for VWs, it can get pricey. When I did the first oil change on my car, Vu explained the difference to me and had me convinced. As a trained VW technician, he knows what's better for high quality German engines. For routine maintenance and 40/60/80k checks, they are priced a lot lower than the dealership and will take care of everything. You can regularly find coupons and deals on their website to save even more. In this business, what matters most is trust. Mechanics have a bad rep for ripping people off. Vu and his crew, however, are outstanding. They always give you a breakdown of what they're doing and how much it'll cost. If you have any questions, they're more than happy to answer. If you need a ride to/from work while your car is in the shop, they'll hook you up. Vu is one of the chillest most down to earth dudes I've ever met and you can see that he's passionate about his work. I am not sure what they have been doing since my last oil change about a year ago, but as a business owner all i can say is "Keep up the outstanding work!" Seriously, have you ever been to a garage that NEVER tries to sell you or upsell you or do anything but the necessary? (If you answered no, go here!) (If you answered yes; still go here) I am just taking a few putts in the lobby while my oil was being changed and this nice lady comes in and starts telling me her car troubles. Since I do not work here nor would even know what to do if you put me in front of an open hood, I politely smiled and pointed her in the right direction. She disappears for a second then comes back to the lobby and opens her laptop. Not but 10 minutes goes by and Hao comes in with the news that the reason the light came on was because of some small reason that does not affect the performance of the car (his explanation was way more detailed than my summary but I didnt understand a damn word). She was very thankful and decided to not get anything done and she was still sent off with nothing but smiles and a "just let us know if anything happens and we will be here to help." Last year the owner was the guy who helped me but this year I got the pleasure to interact with Phil and Hao. Mr. Vu, you did a great job hiring and training these 2 employees as well as running one of the only honest and efficient garages I have ever been to. I took my 2002 Acura MDX with 240,000 miles on it to MR Master Mechanics to follow up on shoddy work at another place. I had an engine light come on and it was idling a bit rough. I took it to another garage that was recommended by a friend. The other garage stated it was most likely spark plugs and for $380 they will fix it. Spent the $380 and car drove the same---rough. Went back and am now told it needs a valve job which they can do for $800. Ha. Not a chance. I found MR Master Mechanics in Yelp and took my car in. I dropped it early in the morning and left keys in key drop. Couple hours later I get a call stating the most likely problem are the valves. And they can do the work for $475. Much better than $800. I just put new tires, a battery and $380 worth of spark plugs in the car and am planning to sell it. The car is only worth $3k at the most, so I opted to take the car and sell it as-is with full disclaimer to the buyer. They were super cool with my decision and simply charged me a $85 diagnostic fee. After driving the car home, I started thinking about keeping it. So now I will take it back to them for the valve job and keep it as a beach car. Their honesty was very appreciated. Felt like the other place was trying to scam me, and after $380 spark plugs and a car that still ran rough, I'd say they did a good job. I'll follow-up with an update after the valve job. read more

I have a 2005 Acura TSX with 106K miles on it. This time I went there for the following: 1. Synthetic oil change 2. Replace driver's side door actuator. 3. Check front struts to see if they really are leaking. 4. Check the rest of the car out. They did a good job. As always. I didn't wait, I had my wife drop me off at work. These guys are good, therefore popular, therefore busy. If you can I would recommend using them, and leave your car with them for the day. They told me that the front passenger strut had an old leak, but wasn't leaking anymore. Told me it was probably OK to leave it for a little while. I told them to change them. When you change one you have to change both. I know that. Luckily they did change them. They found that the driver's side axle boot had failed. The bearings had no grease. They replaced the axle and showed me the old one. All in all it was an $800. They discounted me 5% off of parts, and 6% off of labor to keep it just under the $800 mark which I thought was very nice of them. Also, I don't think they charged me for the labor for replacing the axle. I couldn't find a line item for it on the invoice. For that price this is what they did: 1. Synthetic oil change and filter 2. Replace struts ($120 a strut + 3 hours labor). 3. Replace axle (I think $120, no added labor - which was very nice). 4. Replace the driver's door actuator (dismantle inside of door, replace actuator and connect all three locking systems back up, reassemble inside of door). Always impressed when I go. This time was no different. I will always use them. read more

Awesome auto shop and honest to boot. I brought my car to a different auto shop prior to going to MR Auto about my wheel vibrating and I told them I I had relatively new tires on it, so I didn't think it was an off balance tire. They called me same day and said I needed them to be balanced. 3 rebalances and 200 bucks later (on unneeded parts) I took it to MR Auto. They thoroughly determined the issue and fixed it within 24 hours at a reasonable price. I was also told my a previous auto shop I needed shocks, which MR auto said with the mileage on my car was highly unlikely. They even told me that there may be an issue in the future on the part for the opposite side of the car, but let me know that it doesn't need to be fixed right away. Blown away. Will be going here for all future auto mechanic needs. read more

These guys ROCK! There is a reason why they're business name includes "Master" in it! had an issue with the temperature gauge showing as if my car wanted to overheat and die on me. Other places wanted to start flushing the transmission fluid and changing water pumps to a radiator replacement - jobs that start at $100 and go on to about $400. Simple air bubble removal trick and a bad radiator cap for $16 did the trick. No more overheating! :) Even though they had people already scheduled, they squeezed me in a very busy Saturday schedule. And for that they get 5 stars, two thumbs up and any returning business coming their way. Great job guys! Highly reccomended! read more

I've been going to MR Auto for a couple of years now - do make an appointment if you wish to get in at a timely fashion although they'll see walk in's also. They're honest people and will always tell you the truth of what needs to be replaced and what doesn't (yet). As a broke post-college graduate, I appreciate this. Prices are often matched in comparison to other places. I've come here mainly for synthetic oil changes, but they've given me quotes on hydraulics and water pump replacement in my '09 Toyota Corolla that are of great comparisons to other shops. Came here for an oil change a few weeks ago, and a power steering/alternator belt change more recently. The people working here were friendly and professional. Vu was the first person I talked to, I think. I happened to come on a day where they were all booked. Vu asked me if I needed any help when I came in, and offered to make an appointment for the oil change. Although my schedule didn't work out on the spot, I called later on to reschedule for a time. Vu was very professional, and I didn't feel any pressure to have to schedule it at their garage (I was considering going around to other places). Fast forward to the oil change a week later--Phil helped me out on that service. The oil change was quick. I was in and out in about 30 minutes. After the oil change, Phil came out and gave me some updates about my car--all fine except for my power steering and alternator belts cracking. It was low-key and no pressure. I appreciated that they didn't try to upsell me anything. They did recommend me to get the belts replaced, but again, no pressure. Since the belt did have cracks on short intervals, and was about 10 years old already, I decided to schedule an appointment later. Replacing the belt was the same pleasant process. Just waited an hour for the service to be done. The prices were reasonable, and they have coupons on their website. I have recommended their services to several of my friends. read more

So off the bat, Huy and John both helped me out with hands down the best help ever. So I previously went to two different mechanics in the area for an oil leak and the first guy just made it worse and the second, replaced a part that didn't need replacing. I ended up wasting $350 dollars. However, I called these guys hoping for some what of assistance and oh boy did they help. Over the phone, John instantly knew what my problem, which was an oil pump leak, and I was able to bring in my car an hr later. When I arrived, they were super friendly and only took like 20 min to figure out the root of my problem. They showed me under my car the leaking oil pump and gave me an estimate right there and then. They were able to fix it within a day and explained everything that they had to fix. Although it was a little pricey, $868, I have a 1999 Toyota Camry so I knew I was bound to have multiple problems somewhere which I did. They replaced the oil pump, water pump, timing belt, and multiple other gaskets. Now my car runs perfectly fine so I'm not complaining about the price. All in all, I'd definitely come back whenever I'm back in the area within a heartbeat. read more
