This is my favorite beef in Chicago. Yah ALS or Mr Beef is the is the Chicago thing. Mr Beefs flavor is great. I swear I taste a hint of lamb in there. They make the beef in house with pure love. I have had ALS once but Mr Beef plenty. This is the bomb of beef. This is the absolute messiest sandwich ever if you get it wet and hot. They know how to pile the hot on like a sheet of peppers across the whole thing. Harlem Ave is where I go and they rock. read more

I should probably rate this place a 3. I don't like Italian Beef, period. Never did. I would rate Mr. Beef based on everything else I've had from there over the years. That would give them a 3, perhaps. The extra star is for the liveliness of the place. I've been coming here since I was in high school. I was in a rock band and we would come here on our breaks from practice. I usually ordered the slice of pizza with fries and a Coke. To this day, I generally order the same thing, and it never disappoints. However, the frequency at which I come here has dwindled, since I'm getting older and have to cut down on the greasy foods. And this place is GREASY!! My slices of pizza are always lovingly slathered in grease. I have to sop it up with a stack of 6 or 7 napkins just to get most of it off. Otherwise, I feel really guilty and ashamed of myself for ingesting that much grease. But the taste is very good and unlike any other I have had. Certainly not the best, but very good. It's pretty much a guarantee that any time I come here with my fiance, she gets stared out by the cooks- HARD. No shame in their game! They don't care one bit that I'm standing there, and notice that they're staring. That just makes them do it more. Sometimes I wonder how much the employees are let outside. It's the same people there every time I go. The brother/sister combo that takes the orders have been there for as long as I can remember. Sadly, they no longer know me by name, since I haven't been there as often. But they used to. And let me tell you, they sure do know a lot of regulars these days. Nice, personable people. Mr. Beef's is good for an occasional lunch. If I liked Italian Beef sandwiches, I'd probably be in trouble. I'd weigh over two hundred pounds. Mr. Beef's would be my second home. After my night of drinks and music during my Chicago roadtrip, I decided I had to try a real italian beef sandwich. Looking around on Yelp, I decided to make the 30 minute drive across Chicago from where I woke up, to try Mr. Beef. I'm glad I did. Good food, good people. I got the Italian Beef with mozz, double dipped, and an order of onion rings. The people there are great, and one of the guys hand delivered my sandwich letting me know it was extra juicy. As if I couldn't tell from the beef jus dripping out of the wrapper onto my tray! Ha! The sandwich is HUGE, very generous on the beef and a thick slice of melted cheese. The onion rings were battered and very crispy, I like! All said and done, I almost finished it all, but had to admit defeat. Seriously, this sandwich could feed two normal people. The counter guy was a trip, and made sure we liked what we had and BS'd for a minute before we left. Overall a good experience. We are from L.A. and flew in to Chicago, looking for good Italian beef sandwiches. We googled and picked this one and it did not disappoint! We were greeted by the nicest people, and my dad said it was the best hot dog he's ever had. The Italian beef was so good, and they even managed to make classic coke and root beer taste better than normal. This is definitely a well estaiblished mom & pop local hot spot. The employees seem to know every person who walks through the front door. I almost felt left out but that's about to change. My boyfriend recently moved to this area and I stumbled upon it while familiarizing myself with his new neighborhood. They say their rated #1 in Chicago for Italian beef. Mr. Beef is pretty damn good. You definitely get your money's worth here. A ton of people compare this with Al's but they are really two different tastes of beef. Here you get a huge beef sandwich with a huge order of fries and a large coke for $10. At al's you get a tiny beef sandwich, a small fry and a coke for $13. The creepy employees and rudeness are all free at Al's. I prefer Mr. Beef. The inside is amazing too. they had a menu up from the 80's and it was framed. They also had all their trophies for bowling and sponsorships. That is the kind of stuff you want to see. Plus, the decor makes you feel like you are back in a 70's diner or something. The staff is super nice and fast too. The sandwich is so flavorful and there is so much beef. It tastes perfect and if you get it hot and wet, it is definitely nice and messy, just the way a beef is supposed to be. I would definitely return to Mr. Beef. read more

I'm disgusted bye the filthy restrooms and dining area. I ate at Mr Beef a few weeks ago and it smelled like sewage. The restroom toilets were backed up and out of service. I don't think they should be allowed to serve customers food while the plumbing is backing up into the dining area and no restrooms are out of order. I'm done with this place because I'm very concerned with health standards in this establishment. read more

This place is going down hill , everything has been changing before our very eyes , from the BBQ sauce to the thinner slices , yes thinner . I would buy a slice a sausage pizza before new ownership and it was thicker way more sauce and a carpet of sausage . Now total opposite thinner slices less sauce and half the amount of sausage , they even changed the cheese for a while . Don't go here in the evening for a pizza slice because they stop making fresh pizza two hours before they close so if you go in there one hour before they close you are eating old ass pizza . I went in there the other day in the evening 40 minutes before closing and was disappointed 2 very old slices sausage pizza sitting there nothing else . I asked for cheese they said no . I told them this is what I don't like about this place now . People were able to come in the evening and get a slice of pizza not any more . I have tried numerous times over and over thinking ok maybe this time but no it's always the same . They have even told me they don't make pizza at night after a certain time . If I want old food I'll eat left overs at home . A previous time I saw the pizza was really old and dry was about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before they close so I figured I'll just order a small pizza for me and my daughter they said no we don't make pizza this late WTF dude really , everytime I get disappointed there with old food or no food I drive to Luke's and get fresh pizza . I really want to give them my business but I'm not throwing my money away . Was never like this before I've been coming here since summer of 86 . Very disappointed in the change . I love a good beef sandwich and since we were close to Mr. Beef's we decided to get theirs. Very good beef sandwich. Nice, thinly slice beef that's slightly spicy. The roll was nice and soft though it was dipped in their tasty au jus. It was so big that I had to have it in two sittings. I also had their Munchers. I tried to figure out what is in there. If a tater tot and a jalapeno popper had a baby this would be it. Sooooo good. I would get two of these next time. They were literally that good. Best value need in the city. Place opened in the 1980 and has been a Harlem mainstay since. 50's music and a friendly fast staff are the toppers on this place. They still serve coke unlike many places which switched to Pepsi recently due to the better profit margins. Like a good business they scale out their price. If you use a cpi calculator you can see that the prices are just slightly higher than they were when they opened in 1980. read more

It's a sad day in the Italian beef world. Been coming here for years. Although it was never the least expensive but always the best. Noticed something different when they offered 2 sizes for fries. Alway bought beef by the pond for parties. Bragging how good it is, I recently bought a few pounds...... let's just say it would have been better if I got beef from a deli and soaked it in beef broth. Guessing there are new owners who care more about the income rather then the product. Tasteless fatty with and hard bread. To top it off they under weighed the beef by 3oz!!!! I would rather have a beef from Arby's....Enough said! read more

I LOVE this place. The food is amazing. The workers are really great too. I always get greeting with a smile and a hello. the first time I went there and ordered an Italian Beef, Cheese fries and a Coke, it was a little pricey...until I opened my bag and saw how HUGE the beef was, the LARGE order of fries and a massive drink! So I was quite please about the money I spent. The dont skimp on the food, thats for sure. you get what you pay for! The atmosphere is cute, it has a retro feel to it. I like it. I am going to finally write a long overdue review for THE ABSOLUTE BEST BEEF IN CHICAGO HANDS DOWN NO OTHER CONTENDERS! ! We have eaten at Mr Beef on Harlem Ave for over 15 years..they have the juiciest most fantastically flavored beefs and really fill the roll and dip it to perfection..then their hot on the side is the best and their fries are really the best too EVERY TIME NEVER FAILS..I pass up two other beef places to get to them they are so worth it..and any time I have eaten beef elsewhere it is disappointing. The service is excellent..the problem is..they really need to ASK if you want your beef dipped...i hate dipped beef. My sandwich had to be eaten with a fork..the bread disintegrated. Hands down best beef sandwich in Chicago. Gotta try it with hot peppers stacked on top. Service is top notch, and the '50s decor makes for a pretty cool atmosphere. Decent beef. I usually stop here on occasion when Im out by a friend who lives nearby. It is def a place I wouldnt mind stoppin by every other week or so, but I would rather go to portillos. I was visiting chicago from st. louis on valentines day weekend driving down harlem & spotted this place...i remembered the name from the food network. I had no idea what 2 get lol so we tried an italian beef sub, pizza slice, cheese burger & fries & jus ate & shared everything. Ok..the italian beef....hearty, peppers were killer! It was good. The pizza omg so good, & the burger had a good flame broiled taste & fresh toppings. The fries were plenty (never get alot of fries in st louis) & good with the cheese sauce...we pigged out lol. I have yet to have a bad thing from their menu. Great people with fast service and pizza by the slice! They do not have stuffed pizza which is a downer but the pizza that they do make is top notch, best cheese in the area. The Italian beef is amazing if you are a fan of lots of juice and peppers. The restaurant itself is very decortative with a 50's theme and is definitely a landmark in the neighborhood.
