Amazing food. My favorite is the beef & sausage combo. So much flavor. Blows away Portillos in my opinion.

This place has always been a dining must for me. Jumbo Pizza slices, a pride in an awesome Italian Beef sandwich, they even have a Pizza Puff meal, cant find that too often. They also have a large selection of other great eats so its hard not to give it a try. As most will say this place has greasy food, but its easily overlooked by flavor and overall quality of the food, as well as the prompt friendly service, have never had a bad or unfriendly experience here. It has new owners and nothing is the same. You expect a little difference with new owners but the beef sandwiches are not the same they are smaller and more money the last one I had did not agree with me.The people at the counter are not as friendly they ask for your order and then start talking to someone else before you are finished. Also you don't get your whole order at one time you get some and then you have to wait for the rest.I don't think my family will be going back or other people when you let them know. Be sure to know what you want right when you get there. The large blonde lady and equally large bald man will stare you down till you make up your mind, unless they know you. They treated us like crap, while other people they knew who came to order were treated like royalty. I ate in the restaurant and the unprofessional cooks were pissed off about it making lewd and disrespectful comments about me in Spanish. Really bummed. Did not know they had changed ownership. Drove there all the way from Wilmette as we do every month or so. We go to the neighborhood just to eat at Mr Beef. First we noticed that there were no familiar faces. The normal counter person (was that the owner Karen?) was nowhere to be found. Thought maybe she was on vacation. We placed an order, including a beer. We were told their kegerator was broken. Ok, we'll order a coke. Got the food. Noticed right away the portions were smaller. The beef was much smaller and the bread was different. Staff was ok, but lots of people milling around. If you are going to buy a legendary place like this, why would you change a thing??? We wont be back. We are very sad. It was our favorite beef in ALL of Chicagoland. Someone please tell me if the old owners own something else now. I would follow them. read more

After going to see a foreign film on Sunday afternoon I was craving an Italian beef. I didn't want to drive all the way to Portillo's but now I regret not going to Portillo's for my Italian beef fix. I should have driven to Portillo's and could kick myself in the ass for not doing so since I ended up throwing out most of my food from this joint. Many, many years ago, I heard about this place from a former student who took one of my courses in graduate school. He always raved about "how fantastic" their food is especially the "Italian beef sandwich." Every now and again he would arrive with a beef from this place, inhale it before the class started, and then belch, burp and fart throughout the entire class time. Disgusting and disruptive...but I digress....I finally got to try this place.....here's the low-down and the breakdown: When I get my beef dipped at Portillo's the bread does not fall apart or crumble in my hands. I can actually eat the beef with both hands without it ever falling apart. This was my experience with the bread holding the Italian beef from Mr. Beef & Pizza restaurant. I had to use a plastic knife and fork to eat this mother sucker. WTF, who does that with an Italian beef? I ate less than half of the beef, because the beef and au jus itself was oh so bland. Where was/is the flavor for this beef? I was really disappointed. However, the positive is that the beef is lean (not fatty), and it is loaded with 1/2 lb. of beef, so they don't skimp on the meat. I really, really wanted to like the Italian beef sandwich here. I will not be returning. Another positive is that the service was very friendly and the lady behind the counter greeted me enthusiastically asking "How are you tonight? What can I get for you?" The service was decent. Positive. It was fast. Positive. This joint does not have a drive through so you have to walk into the restaurant. Not having a drive-thru in 2014? I guess it reflects the "mom and pop" image of the old days. However, today this is considered outdated. The parking lot is small and tight with patches of ice throughout the parking lot. Dangerous. If you slip and fall and get hurt in their parking lot it is a law suit waiting to happen for this business. I am not a french fries fan, but thought maybe they would be like the fries from Portillo's. Wrong again. The positive is that the fries are enough for three people to share -- huge! The negative is that the fries tasted frozen (definitely not fresh). I ended up throwing the fries in the garbage after eating two or three. The bread was like a freakin' sponge. It was probably the worst bread I've ever had (the texture was very weird -- sponge-like and it fell apart). The Au Jus was tasteless. I couldn't even eat the entire beef. I gave my dog, Annie, a little bit of the beef meat. She seemed to enjoy it more than I did -- but she'll eat anything! Unlike me, Annie cannot tell the difference between Portillo's beef and this joint's beef. The rest of the beef went in the garbage too. What lesson did I learn? I learned that I WILL drive out of my way and get my ass over to Portillo's the next time I want an Italian beef sandwich -- wait a minute -- the BEST Italian beef sandwich is at Portillo's. What the hell was I thinking. This place had some positives and negatives, but for me, it was mostly negative. My expectations for this place were high, but in the end, it was a huge let-down. Would I go back again? Did I enjoy my food? Was it flavorful? I've answered the questions already. Enough said!!! read more

Recently heard Mr. Beef was sold. Must be why prices have been raised quite a bit and the portions are smaller. Also old friendly employees are no longer there, replaced by rude one that argue with you and get your food wrong. Also cashier sits and eats food as she's trying to help you. You have lost a loyal customer of 39yrs. Sad to see a neighborhood favorite go in this direction. read more

New owners and now this place sucks! Karen and her husband were the light of everyone in the community coming there. They were beyond friendly and very caring. The new guys tried to overcharge me by an extra hot dog and extra order of fries without actually giving me the food, complete BS and would not if others still worked there. Great, yummy food, affordable price, friendly staff and it's super FAST never wait more than 10mins when put in an order for pickup, nine times out of 10 I haven't even left my place yet when I get the notification that my order is ready for pickup. My family and I used to go here for many many years back in the day and we loved it. Great beefs hands down UNTIL one day we're in there enjoying a beef and happened to use the restroom and noticed one of the workers DID NOT wash his hands after using the restroom. I almost tossed up my meal and decided from that day forward never again. I don't know if they've enforced that sanitary rule since but I'll just keep enjoying Portillos. Just went to Mr.Beefs not knowing they changed ownerships but we could tell it seemed different. So once we finished and got to the car we looked it up and sure enough new owners. I would agree that the beef seemed smaller and the bread was different but it still had the great Mr. Beef flavor. Definitely different staff, less social but friendly. They got rid of kids boosters so you'll have to bring your own. Hopefully the new owners don't make to many changes, it was great the way it was. read more

Used to be my favorite place for pizza puffs. Definitely had more flavor than most restaurants. Moist inside and crispy on the outside. With the new owners it's an average pizza puff. Too over cooked so crispy outside and semi dry on inside. Bland flavor. Service was warm and friendly previously. Barely a smile this time around from person at counter. read more

The beef is great. The fries are great. The people are nice. The place is funky but clean. A few booths and a few tables and about a dozen counter seats. This is not the Mr. Beef on Orleans. This one knows how to serve a sandwich. The giardinera is very good and does have a kick. Italian beef gets a bad rap..I notice people referring to artery clogging..Well the truth of the matter is, it is not a "processed" product. Good beef has to be house-made from scratch. That makes it a much better choice than hot dogs or hamburgers which contain a higher degree of fat. The best beef joints all serve relatively lean beef. Mr beef & pizza has been a staple in this community for well over 30 years and I have to say even tho the torch has been passed on to a new owner its still a very good place for great food at very affordable prices. First I must say evertime either going in or delivery my food is always good. The new owner has put together BUY one GET ONE Specials one everything. Man there pizza is outstanding, Burgers are succulent, juicy ,tasty. And not too mention they have the best ITALIAN Beef sandwiches Second to none. We are a going thru tuff times . This place to me hands down is one of the best institutions that deserves your support more then ever now. People trust me they are one of the best fast food restaurant still standing the test of time for a reason and to me is consistency, affordability, freshness. Ps they have some damm good fries. The best Beefs and Onion Rings in Chicago. I used to think Jays on Narragansett was good but Mr Beef is now my favorite. They pack the beef so you get lots of meat. Their onion rings are also the best. I also really enjoyed their shakes too. A friendly staff who takes time to talk with their customers while you wait for your food. Also the restaurant is decked out with old 50 and 60s style memorabilia. Overall a great place to go to. read more

Awesome service, delicious beef's, burgers & fries, and the price is decent especially considering that I can bring one beef home, take half the meat out (my dog might love Mr. Beef even more than I do) & still have a good sized sandwich. I can't say enough about everyone who works there. They go out of their way to bring my food outside to me when I'm walking my dog, They're all genuinely friendly which is hard to find these days. I been in this restaurant for years. The "hot beef" it is delicious and the draft beer it is very good. My kids love the "double hot dog" and they ordered twice last time we stopped by.
