Now that's some good chicken. I love places that have a very simple menu and that focus on doing one thing great. That's pretty much the case here: you have chicken strips. Grilled or fried. There's a sandwich option, a plate option, but you're looking at a pretty simple concept in a pretty simple shop. Now, we know that the grilled ones are better for you. But we also know that the fried ones are just going to be better tasting. And that's for sure. They're a little stingy with the sauces and depending on what you order, you'll get 1-2 sauces and have to spend 50 cents for another one (look, I guess I get it, but also eye roll....) so the flavors can change. Whatever their house sauce is called is fine by me, but I give a hearty recommendation to the hot sauce, too. I'm way into the southern style, the big toast, the slaw wasn't bad, and though I don't love crinkle cut fries, these were good enough, especially with sauces. The only real sticking point for me was the wait. I got here right at lunch rush and the line wrapped all the way around the store. We're talking about 30+ minutes. I'm going to give them some slack as they're new-ish, but it was pretty painful to stand and wait in line that long. I looooooove their chicken - the batter, the crunch, the flavor, the juiciness!!! Even the grilled chicken is delicious and super flavorful! Only reason for 4 stars is the salad doesn't stand up to their plates or sandwhiches (which I understand why but definitely still hoped their salad would be too notch like other items). I think there are only 1.5 chicken tenders on there and the ingredients are suuuper basic. You do still get to order sauce with the salad, which is nice! Okay - so I finally made it back to try the chicken salad.....boy was that a mistake! It was honestly disgusting. Cold dry chicken haphazardly thrown on top shredded lettuce from a bag, with some flavorless diced tomatoes and bagged shredded carrots tossed on top. That's it. The only saving grace is the ranch. Came in on a saturday night, only 2 other couples eating in which was nice. Staff was not very covid safe. No gloves on the cashier and didnt sanitize between giving me my card back and handing us our cups, which had his fingers all over the rims. Masks below noses quite frequently on kitchen staff too. Tables and lobby seemed to be clean enough. Food took quite a while for us to receive, even though we only ordered for two. That was pretty disappointing, especially since similar places are lightning quick ~5 minutes for a similar order. Ours took 20. The kitchen seemed like it had plenty of help, so I don't know what the story was. I got the half and half meal. The grilled chicken was alright, really juicy and not dry at all, but quite flavorless. The fried chicken is definitely the way to go. Charley's sauce was unimpressive however the honey mustard more than made up for it. Seriously one of the best I've ever had. Coleslaw was amazing as well. I ordered, watched my chicken get put in the fryer two minutes later- was watching for fries to get put in too -never were. Waited for my food 8+ minutes as two people who came after me got their orders and left. Hot chicken fryer timer up- put into my container which had fries in it (where did they come from? why were they waiting in the to go box for 8+ minutes?). Bartley and Cody brought this deliciousness from Alabama for our eating pleasure and we're sure glad they did! Their chicken is always fresh, antibiotic and cage free, vegetarian fed and so, so delicious. Their menu is simple - fried or grilled chicken, french fries, coleslaw, toast and their signature sauce (think fry sauce but one billion times better). The beauty of a simple menu is that they are able to focus on what they do best - CHICKEN!! I'm going to admit though that the grilled chicken won my heart, it is amazing. I was introduced to this place by my aunt who lives in Murray when they first opened up. That was a few years ago. To this day I still go at least once a month. I live in Ogden, so driving to Murray is a 55 minute drive, and every time it is worth it. I will happily drive past Raising Cane's, and any other chicken tender place to get to Charlie's. As long as their signs says "Open" out front you will find me as a customer in their parking lot. read more

So we walked in and there were flies all over the place. Thermostat set a balmy 77, so not much comfort if you're dining in. We ordered the Nashville fries, Buffalo wrap, and classic po' boy. Fries were cooked very well and had an abundant amount of toppings (fried Nashville "hot" chicken, pickles, slaw, and their signature Charlie's sauce). But-this isn't Nashville sauce, more like a Caribbean jerk sauce, not remotely hot. Still mediocre for a shareable appetizer, and again; lots of chicken so you definitely get your money's worth. I didn't care for the wrap, the Buffalo sauce was sweet somehow (may have been bad?) but the po' boy with Charlie's sauce (combination of ketchup and Mayo, aka fry sauce) was good. They were the star of the show without a doubt. I took mine to go and wished I had ordered more! The chicken was cooked to perfection. It was so tender, it nearly melted in my mouth! Holy Crispiness O Juicyness! I can now say that I am a devoted convert to the Church of Mr. Charlie. Never have I tasted such hot, fresh, juicyness before these Fried Fingers. Pro tip: don't wait for them to cool down. Take your first bite before you even get back to your table so you have to "hoo ha" through it, it will be the best bite of chicken you've ever had. I just got the snack size, and even though I was starving, i always forget how fast Chicken Strips fill me up. The breading has a nice crispy crunch to it but it is still light and thin, nothing like the thick breading of cafeteria style Chicken Tenders. The Charlie sauce is basically fry sauce, the guy at the counter said it's more flavorful fry sauce, and I guess it was a bit better than most fry sauces but I wish they had some sort of hot vinegary sauce besides buffalo. The toast is basically just extra calories if you're still hungry I guess, nothing special but I heard you can swap for cole slaw which I'll have to ask for next time. But that would be my only beef here, but the chicken is so good it still gets 5 stars, and that's really all you're coming for. I also love that you can buy single fingers. If you do one thing really well, you might as well go all-in. The two Alabamans who own and run Mr. Charlie's has gone all-in on chicken fingers ... which they do really well. Do they live up to the hype? Almost ... but it is A LOT of hype! Really, the best way to Charlie is to get the five-finger chicken plate ($9.50). They have both fried and grilled chicken, and the better news is they mix 'em ... you can get 3-2, 4-1, or all of one. My wife got 3 fried and 2 grilled. The grilled chicken is moist and yummy .. but man, I would still get all fried. The fried is very good ... not mind-altering, but very good. I don't think there's a better fried chicken finger in the Salt Lake Valley. Crisp, fresh, and just enough seasoning. The five-finger plate comes with a side of crinkle fries: Crisp and addictively good. It also comes with a side of succulent, creamy coleslaw, which is flavorful yet not over-spiced or vinegary. And, on top of that, a piece of toast. Seemingly out-of-place on a lunch plate, it is a damn-near perfect piece of Texas toast: seared, crispy, buttery goodness on one side, soft, uncooked fresh bread on the other. The plate comes with two sauces: I went with the Charlie Sauce (fry sauce) and honey mustard. This is the only mediocrity of the meal: both are too seasoned, and neither pair particularly well with the chicken. I'd recommend going back to the lab with their sauces. We had to try dessert! The Pecan Pie was good, but I would HIGHLY recommend the Scotcharoo bar: A perfect mix of chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, and Rice Krispies. Nothing like it in the valley. I moved to SLC with my fiancé in June from Texas and we were really starting to miss Raising Canes and all its glory so we decided to see how close this place was to the next best thing. Overall, there are things we like about both places. What MCCF has over Canes is the ability to choose grilled vs fried or both! The grilled chicken is a nice break from fried sometimes and it makes ordering the 5 piece strip meal more healthy if you combine grilled and fried. I also like that you can order multiple different sauces instead of just the specialty sauce, which is honestly just like Cane's sauce so that's a huge plus! Because some Texans say the sauce at Canes is the best part. I think if I were to do a blind taste test of the two sauces, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I was impressed with their Texas toast because I didn't expect them to be able to emulate true Texas toast but it's pretty dang close. Maybe fatter bread would make it closer. I prefer MCCF fries to Canes, has more flavor and more crispy! The cole slaw at Canes is better though, but no one's really going to these places for the cole slaw anyway right? I didn't get to try their sweet tea so not sure how it compares to Canes ‍ Altogether love this place and will definitely come back when I need my chicken strip fix.
