Mr. Cheng's - Beef Chow fun - Chinese Near Me - North Little Rock, Arkansas

Long story short in very simple English, I parked my rig at the Petro, called an Uber, and came out to Mr. Cheng's to kill two hours of my down time, before I headed out to Texarkana for a pickup the next day. It was surprising to me to find Taiwanese Themed Cuisine in a place like Arkansas. The only time I heard of Arkansas mentioned in Taiwanese media...was with the names Clinton....and Taiwan's Agriculture-- Think Taiwan purchased a lot of Agri products from the state, but that's about it. But anyways, surprised someone settled in Little Rock and decided to cook Taiwanese Braised Pork here (for the Philippinoes "Adobo"). So 'course I was going to order 3 Cup Basil Chicken, 1/3 Black Sesame Oil, 1/3 Taiwanese Cooking Wine **Has to be Taiwan Certified** 台灣米酒, and 1/3 Soy Sauce. I used to make this dish Alot at home with cut up Chicken Legs, bones in. Think this adds to the Umami. But in the case of the restaurants version, it was simplified, but, no doubt no complaints about the sauce, just a bit on the sweeter side. And really needed to have more complimentary ingredients, like Larger Cuts of Ginger, heavier portions of Basil, and "Whole Garlic Cloves," with some Chestnuts as a chaser. Ok enough of my tips here. I'm just a truck driver with years of recreational cooking and restaurant experience what would I know. Enjoyed the Sauteed Cabbage. Very crisp, not oily, the flavors were very natural, natural freshness to the leafs, natural sweetness, it was cooked the way I would want to serve them. Light salt, light msg, light bullion, some minced garlic. Over a flaming wok charred a bit on the sides for that smoky charred caramelized flavors. Lastly the Taiwanese Braised Pork Belly. In all honesty, this tasted more like the Cantonese Version Dong-Po-Rou 東坡肉 minus the Sauerkraut. I felt the pieces here were presented larger than usual. And I believe if they were to cut the piece into square bits it would do the overall experience even better. An entire order with rice was somewhat overwhelming but over a clear broth white noodles soup, with maybe more strips of ginger and cilantro, I think the dish would have full potential. The sauce was lacking the 膠原蛋白 gelatin / collagen thickening agent that makes it super addicting. And I personally think using pork hock, the hind leg butt area would be a better cut if serving larger cuts in the final presentation. Or maybe I'm just thinking about 台灣滷庫腿肉飯陪滷蛋。But anyways, not complaining still enjoyed the meal. My only issue however were the Xiao Long Bao 小籠包 steamed soup dumplings. I just recently finished a review on Good Alley in El Monte California, if any of you want to make a pilgrimage for Soup Dumplings and don't want to wait for the lines at Ding Tai Fung 鼎泰豐，then Good Alley is the way to go. Soup dumplings take time, practice to perfect. I used to work with a Chinese Dim Sum Master, and being in the back kitchen going through the process of hand making these things is straight of a heavy labor that chefs don't love. So back to the Soup Dumplings here....I'm picturing Grant Achatz, the three star Michelin Chef asking, "Are you proud of serving these to your customers?" And I think the obvious answer should be a no. This is not the strengths at this restaurant, and therefore serving this dish unless you plan on perfecting it, is going to be a waste of the kitchen's time, and be a disappointment to the customer. All this said, I'm still eating this place a 4/5 stars. A) because Little Rock is not an Asian Hub for food, B) To maintain this degree of commitment to serving Taiwanese Elements in a town like this in itself deserve praise and C) I thoroughly had a decent meal for 40 dollars plus the service was fast. Everyone at this mom and pop restaurant is working their tails off, handling deliveries, done in with only 2 front of the house staff members. It ain't easy. That's all I'm saying. *Ambiance was pretty quiet. A lot of locals come in here. Take out, etc. The atmosphere was like Panda Inn back in 1980s. 那夠復古了吧！ 昨天經過小岩石城打開Yelp好奇離Petro商業卡車站附近有什麼外賣，可吃的，然後再下一看，距離不遠有個中餐館還有台式控肉飯，台式牛肉麵，我心想，那打個憂步過去看看。一早附近一個小時的提貨預約被取消了，剛好要來Little Rock 補點柴油，所以決定順便停車下車去瀟灑一下。 喔K, 那我就廢話不多了，其實在外州這種老外多的地方，一般我對中餐館都保持著沒有太高的期望，就是入口過得去就行；但這次點的三道菜一個小籠包，一壺茶，實話實說，還真不差！ 三杯雞 3 Cup Basil Chicken -- 味道很全，就是少了點整顆大蒜，幾顆板栗，米酒再多一點，糖少一點會更下飯！不錯了，能達到這標準ok了。 紅燒控肉 Taiwanese Braised Pork Belly，個人覺得不錯，裡面除了五香粉味道重了一點，甜度比起三杯雞溫和一些，裡面含有酥脆紅蔥頭，覺得香菜多下一點比較可以解膩，因為肉都實在太大塊了；建議這道菜搭配米線，但仔湯麵，會更搭。 最後清炒高麗菜，不油，不鹹，很搭另外兩道肉食，挺解膩的。 小籠包就有點失望，真心話，Costco BiBiGo 微波爐兩分鐘都比這個口感好。建議不要賣。 如果當年洛杉磯的印地安啤酒屋台式熱炒店是北美台菜的標準，然後標準是十分，那麼這家餐廳只能給個6.5分； 那麼如果不拿侏羅紀跟印第安的標準來評价這家水平，那麼如果是拿達拉斯，丹佛，密蘇里，鳳凰城來審核台菜，這家能達到7.8分，因為那幾座城市我也都曾經生活過四處吃喝，所以也清楚當地的水平落在哪。 總而言之，覺得如果居住在本地，這家對台灣人挺接地氣，價格很合理，菜的份量也都挺大的，能在外周堅持供應台灣的一些特色菜系也值得佩服，不容易，所以最後給 陳家園打一個4/5 顆星。 read more

I ordered chicken lo mein and an order of Crab Rangoons. I requested Nothing green, no carrots. I requested only noodles, chicken, white onion, garlic, sesame oil and nothing sweet added. Green onions ALL through it and the chicken looked reddish brown. It was not regular cooked chicken color. I ate there once before and it was made perfectly. They would not make it as requested and would not refund my money. I left with no food and 23.00 less money. I am furious! Now I know why they only had one customer other than me. read more

So stopped by and wanted to try this restaurant. They are only open for takeout. I ordered the Boiled fish in hot oil with szechuan and also the Taiwanese style braised pork. The girl at the service counter was very nice. I wanted to give them a five star but I specially asked to have the boiled fish in oil "with szechuan" but there was no szechuan flavor. Then the braised pork had a couple pieces that the fat was undercooked. I Seen lots of people there while waiting for my order so ..... I was thinking that maybe My order was a one off... or it was just a bad day..... so I'm planning on trying again so that maybe can raise this to a 5 star. Good is always good!! We get take out every so often from there. We always enjoy whatever we get.

I've given this place several chances !! Only thing I like here is the fried rice .... I'm more of a noodle girl but their noodles have WAY too much ginger and it made me nauseated the two times I tried it ! Today I tried it again for combination rice (was delicious) and some crab Rangoons and I took a bite and it tasted like milk that had gone bad so I called them and they gave me another order and said "idk what could been wrong it's all the same we just made them" I apologized and went on my way ., I tried them again in my car and they were fresh and hot but again the spoiled milk taste and smell! I don't know what it's about but it wasn't good at all I do not recommend ! Those stats are strictly for the fried rice cause it's great! read more

I keep trying new things here and have enjoyed plenty of dishes both hot and mild. My new favorite is the simple and wonderful Shrimp and Broccoli. It's fresh and nothing deep fried, my new GoTo! They also have great Crab Rangoon and the dumplings (either way) are fab! My favorite soup is The Pork and Pickle, and I am thrilled to be able to get it here. So many others have dropped it off menu. The only downer was how difficult it was to get a smile out of our server, but it happened! And the table soy container was in need of a cleaning. Very cute little restaurant inside a tiny strip plaza that I passed thousands of times. Happy I stopped in for lunch. Very nice service, very good food, big portions and good prices. I had the spicy, garlic shrimp. It was delicious. A lot of food with the spring rolls so I took half for my lunch the next day and was still good. Will be back. read more

Tonight's food just hit the spot. It's hard to find a restaurant you trust that makes good Chinese food. I got lucky here . I got the duck and shrimp fried rice with eggs-rolls on the side. The food was okay, with a pretty standard chinese takeout. There is a better chinese takeout in the area, but this was close on our way home. but they do not honor the price that is printed in their menu. For example, the price for Crab Ragoon, in the menu, is $5.95, I was charged $6.25, Triple Delight is $11.50 in the menu, and I was charged $11.95. I called them out on the price difference and was told some sort of tale that they changed prices. When I asked for the manager, I was told he was not available. I don't appreciate overpaying for the food, and I have experienced this once before. Because of this, I probably won't be going g back here for a while. I definitely don't agree that this is the best chinese food in the state. If they honored the menu price, i would have rated them higher. read more

you know for being a block from the hotel it was pretty good. i got crab Rangoon and general tao chicken i asked for hot mustard i got some run down stuff but it may just be a regional thing no body here in the mid soul makes a good hot mustard the chicken looked to be disappointing but after eating i found some spice not hot enough to take the paint off your car but hot enough to know it's there the rice was good lots of body the gal from the front desk got chicken fried rice it looked good the restaurant was very clean im mean your grandma coming and you're mom is sterilizing the house clean hot fresh yes i walked in and waited a very short time i'll be here a couple of days i think i'm gonna try the mongolian beef before i leave i guess i'll start bringing my own slice mustard when i got out for chinese other then that no complaints here read more

Found our go-to Chinese place in Little Rock! Convenient to LRAFB, friendly service, delicious food and generous portions. Menu is online which is hard to find for mom & pop Chinese restaurants. Well done, Mr. Cheng's! We got the general tso chicken and salted crispy shrimp, which is basically oversized, really flavorful popcorn shrimp! Disclaimer: the shrimp is tossed with onion, scallion, jalapeño, cilantro and Thai chilies from what I can see, so they've got a little bit of a kick! Both entrees were huge portions and came with their own side of white rice. We'll definitely come back to try the dumplings soon! Dirty restaurant and ho-hum food. Take a look at the filth on the curtain separating the cash register from the kitchen. For goodness sake- take it home and run it through the washer!! Flavorless egg roll. Fried rice bland. Sesame chicken was the base fried chicken in a sweet sauce used in so many other dishes (General Tsao, Sweet and Sour, etc) then just a tiny amount of sesame seed sprinkled over the top. Big portions was the only good thing. Roach crawled across the floor in front of my chair while I waited- I guess that was the floor show! I cannot recommend this place. read more

Not really sure how to rate this place. My food was fine. My husband didn't feel well after eating his. There is a curtain separating the dining room from the food prep/cooking area. Not sure if that's up to the public health code. The fish tank is pretty gross and cloudy. We felt badly for the fish. Cleaning supplies are sitting out behind the cash register. While my food was good, there were plenty of things that might raise a red flag. My husband used to be a public health inspector so if he has questions, then I take it seriously. I was in town for one night as a stop over for the night while driving down south so I had no idea what I'd be expecting. I'm very picky about Chinese and only stick to my favorites but I decided to venture out and satisfy my craving for Chinese. I'm so glad I did! During the pandemic they are takeout only and I can only imagine how busy they would be if they were dine in as there was a constant stream of people picking up orders. I originally ordered online through their website and was able to pay cash once I picked up my order. There was only one guy that was working and he was very efficient with phone orders and with walk ins because I didn't have to wait very long to pick up my food. Once I got to my hotel room, the food was still hot and sooo good! I ordered crab rangoons and general tso's chicken. It was spicy to my liking and more than enough food for leftovers. The food here is great. Our order came pretty quickly after placing it, and the lunch specials are cheap! Each of our plates came with egg fried rice, an egg roll AND a cream cheese Rangoon!
