The first I decided to eat at this location due to nostalgia, when I was a child Jim Peyton was a weatherman on WNEM5 and did drawings when advertising for Mr Hot Dog while doing weather reports. It's the last Mr Hot Dog location that is still operating. I was a bit disappointed due to the quality of the food. This time the food was excellent and I will be eating there again when I travel to Bay City. I had a Cheese Coney Dog Plus and a order of fries, the fries weren't overly salted and were perfect. The Cheese Coney Dog Plus had excellent favor. My wife really enjoyed the seafood pak. The restaurant plus parking lot was very clean, definitely not a greasy spoon type of place. read more

If you want a good hot dog, just go to Rally's. Or, Costco. Very over priced, 4 hot dogs, share a fry, share a drink....and almost $20? Very strange this restaurant is still open. Love their fish dinners! They sell a lot of those on Sunday, but you can order them any other day also. Place is also CASH ONLY. You need to go inside and order and pay at the counter. Pretty quick on getting the food out to you also. They do have inside seating, and you can usually pick up free wifi from a close business. Clean bathrooms. I've eaten at Mr. Hot Dog restaurants on and off my whole life. Now there is only this location, but it's exactly as I remember it as a kid. The hot dogs are both good and cheap, the onion rings and mushrooms are both good, and the shakes are alright. Overall, a staple Bay City restaurant if you ask me. read more

I grew up in Bay City. Back in the '70s there were, I believe, three or four Mr. Hot Dog restaurants. Sadly, today, there is but one left. As the name suggests, they specialize in ... Hot Dogs! They have 3-4 four variants: Plain, Coney (with Coney Island sauce), Coney Plus (the former PLUS onions and a dill pickle spear), and Coney Plus Cheese. Frankly (pun intended) I LOVE their hot dogs! Just the right combination of flavors on a Kogels [better-than-average] frankfurter in a soft bun. Their hamburgers are fairly awful, and always have been for 30+ years; ditto for their fries. But the 'dogs are as good as they always have been. They recently introduced the Coney 'Burger, for about a buck. I tried one and it wasn't all that good. But then, I think it was sitting in the warmer for "a while", whereas the dogs are made up on demand. They have fish dinners of some sort, but I've never sampled them. And they USED to have Mr. Pibb, a Dr. Pepper soft-drink clone that may be hard to find outside of Michigan. The food was good, the steak sandwich and onion rings were delicious. The restaurant however, was a bit dated with lots of burnt out lights and dripping water from the ceiling, but overall a good experience. The ONLY reason I gave this place 4 stars is their fries. Better than McDonald's, because you can tell Mr. Hot Dog's fries are pretty much just potatoes, hot oil and salt. The place has a homey comfortableness and the prices are unbeatable. I love that they serve Koegel's, but my hot dog came out cold. My dining companion's coney also had a cold dog, but the coney sauce was warm enough and tasty enough. I like their hamburgers too, which are just what a cheap burger should be. My dad, a Bay City native and long-time Mr. Hot Dog patron, says next time to just tell them to heat the dog up. First and only time visiting mr hot dog. The women that work their totally cool, chill and friendly. The older guy either the owner or head cook very rude. Its a rainy day and I walked there, (don't have a car to eat in) and we were not allowed to eat in the lobby, empty clean lobby with no one in there. Good old Mr. Hot Dog. A Tri-City icon for decades. Yes the place is stuck in the 80s. Yes it may need some renovations. But the core product of coney dogs and the fish meal are the best anywhere in this part of the state. And the stuck-in-a-time warp hook is charming and has its place. My most recent trip just a few days ago did not disappoint. It's the same exact meal I can remember from years past. So this must be a common theme of this place to mess up orders and then be treated like a second class citizen when making a complaint. I ordered six coneys, and they gave me just plain hot dogs instead, no coney sauce. So I go back to get a refund, and the owner gives me my money back but then says, "People like you are why businesses fail, take your money and get the f**k out of my restaurant, before I pound your face in and knock your teeth down your throat jackass". I really don't believe this guy is the owner, he can't be, is he? What kind of owner of any establishment regardless of what it is treats his own employees and customers like this? And by the way businesses fail not because of the customer, but because of managment, and it starts at the top. And the only reason to go here is the cheap price for a coney, but beware of the fact that ordering a coney from here late in the afternoon is a bad idea, the sauce is always cold and dry, best to get one around noon, lost a customer in me. I remember these fast food joints from my childhood. I thought they all had closed. When I saw one still in business I knew I had to try it. I had a Coney Island hotdog, fries and Pepsi. The dog was subpar, fries greasy. The restaurant is in desperate need of a make over. If that's not affordable then at least a thorough cleaning. Food is very cheap, $1.64 per dog.
